I was looking for a good Chinese restaurant. I read the reviews and decided to give the place a try. VERY DISAPPOINTED! I visited early in the afternoon - after the lunch rush - but still during the lunch hours. First, the greeting was very unfriendly. The server was distracted conversing with another server and paying little attention to our order. Absolutely zero friendliness. I felt I was an intruder! I ordered a Diet Coke. It was horrible. Obviously, the syrup was low so I had basically unflavored carbonated water. I had the lunch special for General Zso chicken. Zero taste. The egg roll was uninspiring. The egg drop soup was mediocre- at best. And, the entire restaurant was freezing. It was 110+ degrees outside. So, a cool place is welcomed. And I like the temperature cool - like, my home thermostats are set between 70 and 72 in the summer. But, the temperature in the restaurant was much, much colder. Simply, unpleasant experience. I left without eating my lunch. I had a taste of the Diet Coke, a bite of the chicken, a bite of the egg roll - and nothing else. This place made my list! This is my second visit to George and Son's to meet up and catch up with friends. The last time, about a year ago, we had a lovely time. The food here is good. Nothing to jump up and down about. We wanted to come back because the atmosphere was laid back and relaxing. This visit, we felt rushed. It was 5:00 on a Saturday! Everything was rushed: place your order! (We need a few minutes please); you ready now? (Sigh. Sure.). We ordered mongolean beef, veggie egg foo yung, and shrimp with walnuts. The shrimp was excellent. Very early in our meal they were persistent in clearing our table. (we're still working on that); when they picked up the last few plates plates the server had our check in her hand. By golly she wanted us out of there! (Um, we kinda wanted another glass of wine...). Why? The place wasn't packed. Why the rush? The food is fine, as I mentioned, but the vibe was off for us. The atmosphere is relaxed and the service is amazing. Our food came out in record time, but was still hot and tasted of high quality! I recommend coming during their lunch times, I came on a Sunday and they still offered their lunch menu. The lunch menu plates are huge! They come with your entree, soup, chow mein, rice, a crab ragoon, and an egg roll. I ordered the Kung Pao Shrimp and it was delicious. It had a slight kick, bit it wasn't too spicy. The shrimp was cooker perfectly, mot rubbery. My favorite was the egg drop soup, it had tofu in it and it was addictive. I definitely recommend checking George and Sons out! read more

Haven't been to George's in several years but brought my son-in-law today for his enjoyment. He is from Hawaii and has a discerning opinion regarding Chinese food. We arrived around noon on a Friday and there were only seven tables filled. Hopefully they go more business after we left. We were pleasantly greeted, seated and offered drinks within 2 minutes. My son-in-law ordered a Coke and a Beef with Broccoli lunch plate. I got my standard General Yang's Chicken and a water. In all it came to $32.45, which was a great price for the value. Our soup arrived within five minutes and our plates shortly afterwards. George and Son's have not missed a beat for their outstanding service, food and value. It was just as savory, spicy, sweet, umami packed as I'd remembered. My son-in-law, however, declared that... Drum roll please...it was in his top two experiences of his life. TL;DR my first impression score: 3 of 5. Not what I'm used to, but will try again. It is unfortunate that I ate too much Chinese take-out in California. Not only were there multiple occasions but the amount of food in one flip container was enough for four meals. I think portions are controlled here in AZ... yay I won't overindulge. Ambience and Service: The hostess was sweet as she greeted me with a smile. There was no small talk after receiving my order, so I observed while I waited. The dining area was 40% full for lunch, and I saw the waitress kindly helped a couple gentlemen decide on their order. Fresh and steaming food was delivered by another staff member. When my food was ready, the elderly hostess insisted on stepping away from her seated position to hand my order. I didn't expect the respectful gesture. Food: I really wanted to try this restaurant because of the 'No MSG' claim. The lunch menu listed Thai and Chinese dishes, and though I came for Chinese I ordered a dish that was reminiscent of Thai food. The total with tip: $16 takeout. Maybe I should've dined-in for my first review. The sliced stir-fried chicken...was crunchy. I'm not sure how long the chicken was marinating, but I mistook it for squid because of the texture. The egg roll is not made in house, it was not crunchy and half of the soggy filling was cold. The Lo Mein wasn't terrible as it had nice flavor but the chew of the noodle wasn't my preference. The shrimp were huge, cooked to a nice "C" shape - which made up for the rest. I didn't finish the meal, but I found myself passed out afterwards for three hours. I'm glad I had no work that day. Definitely next time I'll dine in and try a known favorite of mine before I fully consider this place. Then I can try the soup, my food will be hot, and also I can enjoy more of the dining experience. read more

Our server was kind and polite, kept our drinks full, and made great recommendations. Well, let start off by saying I can't say enough about this restaurant. Went for the first time in July by myself and again last night with a friend. I've ordered the "Grandma salad, lettuce wraps, Pad Thai, and teriyaki beef. Grandmas salad has an awesome spicy sting that I loved. Lettuce wraps are a great appetizer or could be a light meal alone and the Hoisin sauce with it is all perfection. Both the teriyaki and Pad Thai were amazing and really a super size! I had the Pad Thai each visit.....it's one of those dishes I could always order. They also had a nice selection of beers. The service is so fast with the food arriving quickly. Over at Aqua Fria, locals know of the AMC 30 and chilis that have been there since the beginning including Samurai Sam's and a few others. And before it was George's and Sons it was a Souper! Salad! Dad and I found out about their lunch special at George's back in 2014-2015ish. We really enjoyed the Tres Amigos (beef, chicken, and shrimp) of the Happy family. Recently I've been getting the sweet and sour pork (which each time I forget has bell peppers and eat around them). Their spring rolls, egg drop soup and ragoons are so good! This place is ideal for splitting an entree after a movie next door: portions are VERY big (and a bit more expensive than your typical fast casual). I have been here a few times when I went to see a movie near this theater. The service has been consistently fast and friendly. I have also gone here before movie (to kill time) and did not felt rushed after I ordered food and sat for a while waiting until the movie time. Food is also consistently good. The quality of the meat is what you'd expect: good, but not amazing. The flavor is also good. But for me, I really appreciate that even their fried rice isn't too oily. Some of the details in the restaurant could be visited. They were playing loud music on a radio that kept making static noise and was a little bit annoying if I'm being honest. And the menus didn't feel clean (quite sticky). So overall the food is good and I'd recommend this spot, but it's not a restaurant I'd drive out of the way for unless I was seeing a movie next door, and I would not consider this a 5 star experience. read more

We tried this place for take out when my mom was in the hospital. The food was so delicious. I had the chicken basil, yum. Great flavor. We also got the sweet and sour shrimp. The shrimp were a good size and the dish was tasty. The salt and pepper chicken was spicier than my brother was expecting. We ordered a hot and sour soup and a wanton soup. Recently I heard very good things about this Asian restaurant. I couldn't wait to go and try their egg foo young - an American asian staple by which I and many others judge an asian take out restaurant. To be clear, I am a New Yorker and know good fast Chinese food. The ambiance was promising. It looked like I was finally going to find what I've been looking for in Phoenix for years. For whatever reason, Chinese restaurants in Arizona serve egg hockey pucks and cover it with various items and call it egg foo young. I even asked about it before I ordered it. Alas when I got home and saw what I had, I was disappointed. It's faster to make it this way but the egg hockey puck had no taste - zero. They could have at least added oyster sauce, a little soy sauce, maybe nam plah, and perhaps sesame oil. It was tasteless. A complete miss. I also ordered something simple, shrimp spring rolls. They were delicious! I inhaled them and will order them again. I'd go again just for the spring rolls. Maybe they have other dishes that are good and I may not entirely give up but the egg foo young is a no go. read more

With traditional Lazy Susan tables, you would expect "The Three Amigos" (beef, chicken and shrimp and beef) to be outside somewhere taking a walk. Dragon and Phoenix (Chicken and Shrimp) as well, but they were not. So too with the pockets he sells, Vegetable and Seafood. Please note that on the menu there are 12 varieties of fried rice. The lunch has an ample but smaller portion then the dinner. They also come with a small vegetable roll, Lo Mein and steamed rice. The atmosphere is dark, with out loud music. It's a nice, possibly romantic place. The bathrooms, along the right side of the restaurant, when facing right, are off a short hall. The looked clean. The most important thing, once initiated, is getting back. You will want to eat there again. The dish, Thai Spicy Basil Chicken had basil you could taste through the thick sauce that buffered the heat. Lunches run about ten dollars. This is truly a five star restaurant. He is new where he is. For my palate and yours, I hope he stays. I hope his creativity is rewarded. It is really just so good. Five Stars!!! I used to love the food here, but it seems to have gone downhill. The hot and sour soup was OK, but definitely lacking the "hot". I will give it a B. I figured I would give the Pad Thai a try, even though this is primarily a Chinese restaurant. I should have known better. It was completely lacking in character or flavor, and the tofu was so rubbery that it was hard to chew. Probably the second worst Pad Thai I've had in recent years -- and I've had a lot. I would give it a D at best. The firecracker scallops were also disappointing. The sauce was bland -- a little bit sweet, but mostly just blah. One of my two scallops was cooked just right, but the other one was slightly overcooked. Probably a C here. The spinach with garlic made a really nice side dish though. And it was a generous portion. I got my soup and nearly instantly the workers slowly started coming out glaring at me one by one and not just one glare but many and not nice but to the point that at 920 I was like nevermind! I was soooo uncomfortable even after asking again to the waitress "you close for sit down at 930 right". And she once again answered YES and more glares by like 6 -7 employees!!! When I left I suggested maybe they move up there time to close at 9 since they seem as though they do not want anyone in there after 9 and how uncomfortable they made me feel. It wasn't even 930 it was 920 and I was only eating soup not to mention i paid right away so that they could close out everything to help in that way unbelievable read more

The place is nice and clean with lots of seating inside. The bathrooms were really lean as well and speaks to the tidiness of the restaurant. The workers here were soooo nice and attentive to us the whole time, checking up on us especially my kids. We came to try the food here for the first time and will be coming back. The price and amount of food you get for it being tasty as well was worth it. My uncle got the Mongolian beef and I got the spicy stir fried beef, and made it extra spicy. It came with egg drop soup first, and the plate had chow mein, rice, wonton, and vegetable egg roll with the entree. The main entree tasted pretty good but but not fantastic, it was missing a little oyster sauce flavor for my liking for the spicy stir fried beef. This was the right amount, even more, for a lunch. The noodles tasted great, but the won ton and vegetable egg roll tasted like something from a box and was meh. The lunch was finished with the check and four fortune cookies.
