I arrived for my appointment having taken the time to properly wash, condition, and blow-dry my hair in advance. As a Black woman with long, natural hair, this is not a small task--it is a deliberate and thoughtful effort, often done to ensure the stylist can focus on the intended service. I used a product (Color Wow Dream Coat) which, unbeknownst to me, left a slight residue on my hair. Instead of approaching this with professionalism or even basic courtesy, Raphael immediately began making degrading remarks. He repeatedly told me my hair was "dirty" and even went so far as to call it "filthy." I calmly explained that my hair had just been washed and that the texture he was feeling was likely due to the product I used. Rather than offering a solution--such as simply re-washing my hair--he chose to escalate. What followed was deeply inappropriate and, frankly, unacceptable. As I became visibly emotional, I was accused of "acting too American" and was repeatedly called a liar. Being spoken to this way, in a room where I was the only Black woman present, felt incredibly isolating and targeted. The comments about my hair, my honesty, and even my demeanor carried an undertone that was impossible to ignore. At one point, Raphael stopped mid-service, leaving my hair partially cut, and told me to leave--refusing to continue. I was left sitting there, embarrassed and exposed, trying to hold myself together after being spoken to in such a demeaning way. Eventually, the owner stepped in and completed my haircut. While I appreciate that he attempted to salvage the situation, the emotional damage had already been done. Despite everything, I still left paying $255 for what can only be described as one of the most uncomfortable and degrading service experiences I have ever had. No client--regardless of background--should ever be made to feel ashamed of their hair, their identity, or their presence in a space that is supposed to provide care and service. As a Black woman, hair is deeply personal. To have that used as a point of humiliation, in a public setting, was profoundly upsetting. I am sharing this not out of anger, but out of a sincere hope that no one else is made to feel the way I did that day.

The salon was spotless. They also offer head spas. When I first arrived, they did a hair analysis on my scalp to see whether my hair was dry and to give me suggestions for improving its quality. Hair history: I used to be full bleach blonde a decade ago, dealing with rebleaching every few months- and never has my hair been this fried after one single appointment. It's been like ten years since my hair has seen bleach. I've just been box dye depositing (my natural hair color, brown) once a year as a toner to keep the red away. My hair had a normal amount of damage, it's seen heat on occasion and has fly aways and is porous as it's fine and thin. The rest: Sara was really a great person to chat with, and I am sure she is great with other coloring techniques as an "assistant senior colorist?" If I remember correctly, but I can not recommend her for a balayage specifically. I told her my hair lightened quickly. I believe my hair was over processed or she may have used too high level of a developer but I am not sure what the cause was. She used foils, and did not evenly paint the bleach, so after everything was done she had to go back and fix major uneven starting points around my head. The blending was not well done. And then more touch ups were needed. She was very rushed. I understand that the place was booked and busy but she was working on me and another woman at the same time towards the end of the appointment. She had to have her coworker help brush the other side of my hair because time was so short, and they were brushing from the root to the end, just causing breakage. Maybe I'm old fashioned, but this salon did not even blow dry your hair complimentary after a color service- they charge extra. So I sat there with wet hair and left with wet hair. She blow dried my front bang on both sides to show me the color. It's been a few washes, conditions and about a week now since that happened, and I've been hoping my hair would collect itself a little, but it's just totally fried now. The salon/sara offered to have me come back in but I declined after this, and because they wouldn't take accountability for the damage when I told them about it. They just said my hair was damaged before. So that was disappointing.

After chatting with Maggie, I was convinced into dying my hair so it could be shiney and hide the *ahem* grays I have. Despite having a tight schedule, Maggie squeezed me in on time for my wedding... and I am forever grateful. Thanks to Maggie and the girls, I felt beautiful during all my wedding festivities- and it was in part due to the fresh, dark, glorious hair. (Don't be afraid to go dark!) I'll begin saying that both the owner, Maggie, and Victoria, the actual hairdresser who did my hair are loving people. The review is about the service. They do not know how to do the Oxo organic keratin treatment. I doubt they had done it before. I did not get to have the final step of the keratin process because they did not have the OXO sealing mask. They said the company did not include it in the kit they bought. I got a refund for $50 (the actual cost of the mask at the vendor) which is not enough to cover the deficient service I paid for ($650 treatment plus 20% tip = 780 dollars + $20 parking!). My treatment won't last because they were unable to seal the keratin with the OXO mask. Please find someone who does this treatment in a regular basis and has more experience working with OXO products. SECOND REVIEW AFTER OWNER REPLY: The response from Maggie (the salon owner) is absolutely untrue. I am disappointed that she decided to blame Victoria instead of accepting responsibility for not knowing how the OXO organic keratin works. There was no professional judgement about withholding the finishing mask. There was not even an offer to apply an alternative mask. They just did not know that there was an OXO sealing mask at the end. Unbelievable that you would charge $650 for a treatment and you don't know how the process works. I came with the intention of doing color at the end, but taking into account that there was no OXO finishing mask and that Victoria had let the treatment in my hair for 90 minutes and not 60 minutes as I had it before--my scalp was burning, red, and painful-- I decided to leave and finish the treatment at home and do my color when my scalp healed. There was NO " professional judgment to adjust the finishing process rather than use the standard mask at that time" from Victoria or anyone at the salon. There was only ignorance about the existence of such mask and all the steps of the process. Maggie had to order the mask after I complained because she did not know that such mask existed.. The salon service in this regards is misleading. In fact, I have opened a complaint with OXO corporation because this booth salon (Republic salon chain) is listed in the number of hair places that offer this service. Sorry to go into all this detail but the deception of the owner's reply to my initial review confirms that she continues misleading customers. Hence, the need for this long review.

I went to Nelson J salon on 4/18/2024 and was asked by Helen Nassib if I wanted a keratin treatment or a Brazilian blowout. I specifically requested a Brazilian blowout which requires the use and techniques of the brand called "Brazilian blowout" (https://www.brazilianblowout.com/). I could not see at all the product that Helen Nassib applied but I could tell it wasn't the original branded Brazilian blowout product as the smell is very strong & distinctive and it was not the same. Her technique was also unusual and different than what should be done typically as well. The results were not the same, nor good at all and I am 100% convinced she did not give me the service I requested and paid for. I have done Brazilian blowouts for over ten years and this was not one for sure. I am so disappointed and had to get the help of a lawyer to resolve this issue with Groupon!

The problem is that when you check out after your service, they charge you the full amount again, as if no deposit was ever paid, seemingly hoping you've forgotten about it. Then, on top of that, you're expected to leave a tip. This happened to me multiple times. At first, I thought I was just forgetting because I hadn't kept track of my deposits. But on my last visit, I took a screenshot of my deposit confirmation before my appointment. When it was time to pay, the cashier insisted I pay the full balance with my card. I only brought enough cash to cover what I knew was the remaining balance plus my tip. When I showed them my deposit receipt, they suddenly changed their tune. Their reaction made it seem like they knew exactly what had happened. Please keep track of your deposits if you choose to visit this salon. Screenshot your confirmation and verify that your deposit is deducted from your final bill before paying. I can't say whether this has happened to anyone else, but based on my own experience, I believe I was overcharged multiple times. Had this not happened, I would have remained a loyal customer. Instead, I feel like I lost hundreds of dollars that I worked hard to earn.
