I was…read moretold I had multiple cavities and needed crowns, but after getting a second opinion from my longtime dentist, I was told I had no cavities. That major difference in diagnosis was very concerning and made me lose trust in the practice. Full story below: I chose this dentist based on the positive reviews, but my experience was very disappointing. One thing that immediately concerned me was learning that patients were being offered an incentive for leaving reviews, which made me question how genuine those ratings really are. During my visit, the overall atmosphere felt insincere. What was most upsetting was being told I had three cavities and needed crowns, despite having seen my regular dentist only three months earlier. That diagnosis did not sit right with me, especially because it seemed to be presented before a thorough exam, and when I asked questions, I felt dismissed rather than respected. Because I was uncomfortable, I followed up with my longtime dentist for a second opinion, driving all the way to Riverside because I trust him. I was then told I had no cavities, and that the only possible issue was an older root canal that may need to be redone. That huge difference in diagnosis left me with serious concerns about the accuracy and honesty of my visit here. I am sharing this because I think patients deserve to feel informed, respected, and confident that recommended treatment is truly necessary. Unfortunately, that was not my experience.

First of all, I am surprised that I have never rated my experiences with Dr. Gutierrez and his…read morestaff. While living in Whittier (2009-2017), I worked in Beverly Hills as an office manager for a private dermatology practice. I knew I could receive a word-of-mouth (excuse the pun) recommendation with the expectation of a professional courtesy. However, I did not believe/feel I had major dental concerns, and I was not seeking to capitalize on perks since I had a PPO insurance plan. After doing some research, I found Dr. Gutierrez's office to be accommodating regarding my main objective: teeth whitening. His staff was open and honest when I called to make sure the office was a good fit. I found them straightforward and said they do perform teeth whitening; however, I would still need an initial exam. I did not find this approach erroneous. Why? I intended to utilize my insurance whenever feasible and cover any costs not covered by it personally. Putting it into perspective: taking my PPO out of the equation, a plastic surgeon will not automatically perform a cosmetic procedure at a person's request. A radiology center would not automatically perform a CAT scan of an individual's brain if they walked in off the street with a headache and agreed to pay for it. Why? Medical facilities do not work that way. Invasive cosmetic procedures or noninvasive tests fall within the spectrum of medical procedures and are typically performed by certified specialists; therefore, one can expect bureaucracy, red tape, and ethical considerations in medical care. If not an emergency, delays can be frustrating. But when pain and costs are involved, everyone's time is precious, so expectations of being accommodated can be subjective, even though patients are not to be blame for their issues. Therefore, implementing proper management when 'risks' are involved is crucial (I will revisit this issue at the end of my review). I was due for an oral tune-up (x-rays, cleaning, and consultation of recommendations). I chose to open up and address concerns about past dental issues. In 2004, for several months, I had a documented history of trigeminal neuralgia, which ended up being related to my 2005 confirmed thyroid cancer and not a cavity filling as initially thought. The filling was the least of my concerns compared to the many other neck/head medical issues I needed to address during those months/years. And so, upon our first meeting, I finally addressed any problem I had been evading (since I was in a 'safe' place) when Dr. Gutierrez was surprised to find a crater in one of my molars. The neglected molar was one issue, but I had wisdom teeth that could have interfered with my dental health (I knew this before establishing my dr/patient relationship with Dr. Gutierrez). He performed my teeth whitening and handled root canal treatments. Eventually, I signed up for Invisalign because costs were always my excuse for not getting braces. Although costs were no longer a factor, Invisalign was less expensive, less time-consuming, but also less permanent, because braces meant I had to have my canines pulled. After so many years of medical issues, less invasive meant more. The Invisalign option met my aesthetic interests on all levels. The only reason why I stopped seeing Dr. Guiterrez in early 2019 is that I permanently moved to Northern California. Bottom line, regardless of the number of my outpatient treatments, I found Dr. Gutierrez to have an excellent bedside manner and expertise. Again, having worked in the medical field, but more importantly, I have also been a patient who has suffered misdiagnosis (deemed as malpractice, but I chose not to sue), as patients, we deserve our dignity. Still, that being said, I did not find it offensive when his staff discussed aspects of my care (e.g., explaining the costs of procedures (billing), obtaining my signed consent, confirming follow-up availability options, scheduling the appointments, or checking in to explain whenever there may have been wait times). I acknowledge that some people may not have a good rapport with a professional, or that mistakes may occur that makes better sense for a patient to seek care from another professional; however, what I am stating from my experience throughout the years I was a regular patient is that there was no pattern of nefarious treatment or substandard care by Dr. Guiterrez and his staff. Anyone seeking medical treatment should always be aware that they have the right to a second opinion and should never apologize for seeking one. Still residing in No. Cal. I think of Dr. Guitierrez often and have contemplated traveling to reestablish my patient-physician relationship; however, I know that dentists are at the top of the list for evaluations and treatment should pain or emergencies be involved, and that evaluations and treatment cannot/should not wait; therefore, I have chosen to just keep my fond memories.

I was looking for a new dentist and decided to call this office after seeing so many great reviews…read moreon Yelp. Unfortunately, my experience did not reflect those reviews. When I called, the receptionist answered and I asked about becoming a new patient and whether they accepted my insurance. I explained that I wasn't sure of my insurance provider, and instead of offering help, she responded, "If you don't know, how am I supposed to know?" I found that response dismissive and unprofessional. I then asked if she could possibly look it up using my information, but she declined and simply told me I needed to know my insurance. No guidance, no alternatives, and no attempt to assist. A more helpful and courteous response--like suggesting I contact my employer or offering to help once I had the information--would have made a big difference. Instead, the interaction felt abrupt and unwelcoming. First impressions matter, and this experience was disappointing, especially given the positive reviews. Unfortunately, it makes me hesitant to move forward with this office.

She put anesthesia at 2pm on me and left to go work on another patient. She came back to me at 2:50pm I had to be at work and I had to cancel because now I have to wait for my treatment to be done. Care quality is not there. I'm sorry but with me it has been a bad experience. I had a root canal done on 4/3/25 and I had a very bad reaction to the liquid that they use to work on the tooth. And the day after my treatment my face was swollen and I got a big bruise. See I understand doctors have a lot of patients, but if they work around a schedule, and we work on a schedule to make our days go as smoothly as possible, shouldn't they keep the time frame they give us? I had to miss work unnecessarily, if they would have worked on me as planned, I would have been out in time to make it to work....

Based on that conversation and my prior visits, I had no reason to think there would be a problem. Later, I found out I was assigned to an out-of-network provider, even though there were in-network providers in the office. That was never clearly explained to me beforehand. They also did imaging that my insurance only covers at certain intervals, and no one told me beforehand that it likely wouldn't be covered. I ended up paying $872 out of pocket, which I did not expect. If I had known any of this up front, I would've made different decisions. Just frustrating overall because I returned based on prior good experiences and left feeling blindsided by the cost and lack of communication. I'd recommend people double-check exactly who they're seeing and what procedures are covered before agreeing to anything.

I rarely leave reviews, but this experience needs to be shared…read more When my wife first found Whittier Modern Dentistry, I was genuinely impressed. The office is modern, clean, and well-equipped, and the front staff were helpful, courteous, and professional. My initial visit on March 5-6, 2026 felt routine. I underwent a full evaluation including X-rays, CBCT imaging, and periodontal charting. I reported pain, sensitivity, bad breath, and concerns about what felt like visible holes in my molars. Despite this, I was told by Dr. Katelyn Kcomt that I did NOT need any fillings or crowns. I trusted that assessment. However, over the next several weeks, my symptoms continued--food getting stuck, sensitivity, and discomfort--so I scheduled a follow-up visit. At my appointment on April 27, 2026, I was seen by Dr. Laura Beatriz Alvisua. From the beginning, the interaction felt tense. I respectfully asked multiple times to focus on my main concern (possible decay), but the conversation kept shifting to lab results that should have been reviewed weeks earlier. After finally being examined, I was told that: I DO have decay I need fillings and possibly crowns This directly contradicted the original diagnosis. At that point, I was ready to move forward and get the treatment I needed. However, when I briefly mentioned that I had never been contacted about my lab results, the interaction escalated unnecessarily. My concerns were mischaracterized as being about a $100 refund I was addressed in a sarcastic and dismissive manner I was told I was "unprofessional" and "contradicting myself," despite remaining calm The conversation became argumentative while I was still reclined in the dental chair When I requested copies of my X-rays and documentation (which patients are entitled to), I was told I was "fostering a bad relationship." I was then: Refused continued treatment Labeled a "bad client" And as I was leaving, staff were instructed to call security I was not aggressive, did not raise my voice, and was simply advocating for my care and records. In addition, I paid for a saliva lab test during my initial visit and was told I would be contacted within about a week to review the results and create a treatment plan. That follow-up never happened. To their credit, the front office staff remained professional and ultimately provided my records. However, the inconsistency in diagnosis and the way I was treated by Dr. Laura Beatriz Alvisua were unacceptable. Patients deserve: Accurate and consistent diagnoses Respectful communication Transparency in care Access to their records without resistance Due to the seriousness of this situation, I am filing a formal complaint with the Dental Board of California. I've also included a portion of the X-rays taken during my initial visit, specifically the area I raised concerns about at the time. I hope the office takes this seriously and ensures no other patient is treated this way.
