I am particular about my hair, have always been the gal with the beautiful long Kate Middleton like hair, and have had many leading people work on it (Anthony Cristiano is my stylist. I had my hair highlighted for years by leading nyc colorists such as Rita Hazan, Kyle White, and my favorite Marie Robinson to whom I went for many years). OMG I went in to see reportedly master colorist Daniel Rubin with my Robinson base formula yesterday. I requested updating the formula to a zoned use of one-steps to cover my now resistant salt and pepper at my part while otherwise providing a multi dimensional brunette as I'd come in. Daniel delivered the quintessential horror job--mascara black helmut head. The job couldn't be worse from the most junior colorist at a strip mall salon. Also though I told him I have seborrhea and use a medicated shampoo, and though I asked him to check my color post shampoo because it was unusually dark, he didn't recognize that the shampoo gal hadn't gotten the dye out. I not only got an awful aesthetic result but by this afternoon my scalp, neck, and back erupted in itchiness and when I scratch my scalp I have tar like black pigment under my nails. I am a physician and believe that with high potency steroid ointment applied several times daily for 3 weeks I can resolve the inflammation once I get the dye off my scalp. But I am pessimistic about a quick aesthetic solution. I will return to the salon tomorrow to request removal of the dye from my scalp (I understand removal of the particularly heavy product used requires a special chemical) and color fix which i believe may require several processes over the next several weeks. I will update my post afterward. I don't know which if any Chicago area salons can deliver sophisticated, spectacular color that rivals nyc's best colorists or at least can reasonably satisfy discerning clients, but I see that the Winnetka Rehder salon isn't remotely the place. read more

Worst, most expensive haircut of my life. Saw Jillian who didn't even bother to ask how I wanted my hair cut - I showed her some pictures, she said "oh those are pretty" and then ignored the pics as she talked nonstop for 1.5 hours while cutting my hair completely at random. Ended up with a weird, blunt straight across cut (no layers) with one side almost 2 inches longer than the other - didn't trust her to do anything beyond fixing the unevenness (which btw she was unable to do properly), and didn't even bother to tell her what a bad job she had done. She clearly wouldn't have cared either, I was barely out of the seat before she was already walking to her next client. Terrible, terrible service. If Jillian is your only option, go to super cuts or grab a pair of scissors at home if you're in desperate need of a haircut. read more

Sometimes reviews steer you wrong, but in this case they are absolutely right about Johnson! I am terrified of getting my long hair cut because of past bad experiences, but Johnson is a master. It had been 6 long months since my last haircut, because my previous stylist went on leave, but Johnson put me at ease and took minimal length off while freshening my hair up. What a great little salon that I never even noticed in the area. Bright and crisp. Definitely hustling and bustling with the viagra triangle/gold coast's finest. Great people watching. Friendly owner and staff. Energetic atmosphere. Came for a simply straight blowout, and left with a (mostly) sleek look. The temple region of hair needed more attention, but it was fixed once it was addressed a couple of times. The stylist was very personable, and listened to all requests. Would recommend for blowouts. But I could not be more thrilled with my experience at Paul Rehder. Vivian is AMAZING. She has a true instinct for (blonde) balayage, and did such a fantastic job listening to what I want and translating that into the perfect cut and blonde for me. She has a true talent for it. I'm so glad I trusted her with my hair and with making decisions when I was uncertain. I love this salon! Johnson is amazing when it comes to cutting hair. When he first cut my hair, it was to my hips. I have been growing it for years and I was always so scared to get it cut but he made me feel so comfortable that i just went for it! Ever since then, he is the only person that I go to for haircuts. This is a review for Nicole Jacob. I go to her for my eyebrows. She is such a sweetheart and does the best job. She individually plucks each hair and is a perfectionist. I have awful eyebrows and she always makes them look wonderful. I have also had her do my makeup and she is amazing. You will look like yourself but better instead of looking like you have a ton of makeup on. I also think she is really reasonably priced. read more

Corinne Scheitler is an amazing stylist. She's cut my hair for over 10 years... when she moved here from Salon Buzz I didn't know what to expect. What a nice surprise. This salon is such a great experience. First, the space is brand new and gorgeous. The salon moved here from its previous spot on Rush, find the building by the big black awning on the front. The salon is large and open and filled with light from windows all around. There's even an outdoor terrace where you can sit and get some sun on nice days! I'm just thrilled that my stylist moved here- the staff is genuinely caring and nothing seems rushed or hectic at all. I will look forward to coming here, it's that nice. read more

Nice salon... a bit hard to find! Instead of going straight into Le Colonial, you open the surprise door on the left. You can valet park at Le Colonial, which is a great deal in the neighborhood. This is the kind of salon where the stylists rent their spot. They're all in business for themselves and have enough existing clientele to be able to pull this off. Paul Rehder charges something crazy like $300 for a haircut... I couldn't believe it when I saw a 16 year old in his chair! (My stylist charges $95) All in all, a very good place but more someplace you go if you've been referred by a friend or if (like me) your existing stylist decides to go it on their own. read more

It took me a long time to find a good colorist after mine moved to Florida. I had been to every high end salon in Chicago and everyone sucked. I found Vivanne on Instagram and fell in love with her. I can't begin to tell you how amazing she is with blonde hair. Every time I leave her I feel like my hair has been transformed! She doesn't do the basic highlights , she goes above and beyond with technique. I've grown to adore her personally as well and my life would literally be over if she ever stopped coloring hair . Her friend also cut my hair once, very very very expensive but worth it! The salon itself is on a block where all the high end shopping is and sprinkles! The salon is some what out dated but who cares Vivanne can do my hair in a garbage can and I wouldnt care she's so talented. I'm pretty lucky. Per a recommendation I went to see David for a haircut. I felt bad because I was distracted by stressful work related texts, but he listened to my needs even though I didn't go into much detail, and was respectful of my main request. Do as much magic as you can, without compromising the length. Stylists love to whack off my hair which leaves me nervous of haircuts. He didn't! My only regret was that I didn't book color as well. Dianne Petersen - the best in Chicago. I have followed her for almost 20 years, but she is now at PR and probably won't move again since everyone there rents their chair, so essentially runs their own business. She is rather expensive (I think the current rate is $105), but in over 20 years I have NEVER had a bad cut from her. She listens, and is definitely a pro. She even made my bob length appear long in an up-sweep for my wedding 10 years ago. If you have difficult hair, she is definitely your girl - but I would send anyone to her. read more

Go to Vivian Valone for Color and Yasmin for cut. I have followed Yasmin to 3 salons starting with Mario Triccoci, then Anthony Christiano. Vivian was there too but I didn't know her until they moved to this salon. My hair is fine and mostly straight and Yasmin does beautiful layers that blend so nicely. With my color, I'm usually doing some version of blonde highlights on my brunette hair and it always looks great. She's able to decipher my laypersons description of what I want. The salon is pricey but I don't have to go for my cut or color as much as I used to - both hold up for 6 months IMO read more

I've known Nicole for years, but I never actually had my makeup done by her until my wedding, and let me say, I was damn happy I asked her. For someone who wears very minimal makeup, I was terrified of what event makeup might turn out to be, but she was exactly what I wanted on my wedding day. She asked for what I wanted, but as I didn't know much and just trusted her, she was absolutely fantastic!! It was just the right amount, felt light and it lasted throughout the night. She is also the coolest person to be around, and has such a wonderful soul, so it made my bridal prep that much better. read more

I went back after my first visit to get highlights from Alyson... she's fabulous! She knows exactly what she's doing, and she did an amazing job. I just got face framing peekaboo highlights, but as simple as it may be they turned out amazing. I also went back again recently for a new haircut between shifts, Elaine squeezed me in (you go girl!) and Ricky cut my hair again. I went in mostly for a trim but I wanted to try straight across bangs, I was a little nervous but he tested it out and told me they'd be cute. After he was done I fell in love with them! Go to COLLEEN B for color!!! I am obsessed with Colleen. I originally found her on Instagram when she was at another salon and have followed her to Paul Rehder! I SEARCHED for a good colorist for years and finally finally found Colleen on Instagram (check her out: @borntobalayage) - her work is beautiful. She is so sweet, so professional and MY GOODNESS is she talented. I had been going to an amazing colorist in DC for a few years and when I moved to Chicago I decided there was no way I could ever find anyone to make my hair look like that so I may as well just go dark. So, dark I have been for a few years while I searched for someone new. Colleen was able to brighten up my hair to look incredibly natural and sunkissed - a painted balayage. And I have been coming back to her ever since! We have gone down the blonde road again and I'm now a blended, natural-looking wonderfully painted blonde and I will be shouting her name from the rooftops to whoever is thinking about color. Good color is hard to find and she is simply phenomenal. Color genius (and she's always learning new tricks!). NEXT, need a cut to go with that beautiful color!? Alex R is my girl for cut/style (Check her out on Instagram, too!: @Alexx_Style). She is SO stylish to start with and is always up on the new trends which I LOVE. He is such a creative colourist, giving me over the two years, exactly the shade, highlights and advice I so desperately need when it comes to hair. I recently left my hair stylist of 12 years after I started coming out of the salon with worse roots than I went in with. I started going to David Hewitt at Paul Redher after a good friend of mine referred him and he is exactly what I had been looking for! He is friendly, sweet and easy to be around and he is truly talented when it comes to hair color. I have extremely fine hair but I have a ton of it and coloring, blow drying, straightening and general messing with it really takes its toll, but David is very careful with his blondes and knows just how to take care of my hair so it doesn't dry out, break or turn brassy. The last color job I got was two weeks ago and I think it was the best of my life. I got three compliments on it just on my way home from my appointment, so I would highly recommend everyone looking for a great color job, go see David Hewitt! I have been going to Paul Rehder for yeeears. I go to see Waldina for my color. She is absolutely amazing! I usually go for highlights and a base, but sometimes I change it up and go really dark. No matter what I want, Waldina knows exactly how I want it to look while always keeping my hair healthy in the process. I wouldn't go to anyone else for color. I also see Michelle for my cuts. Michelle also does a fantastic job! My hair always looks so beautiful after she's done cutting and styling it. I have my eyebrows done by Nicole as well. She uses tweezers, which I like, and they always look great after she's finished. She's the best! Everyone at the salon is always very friendly too. Seems like my stylist, Liddy McClain, has been with Paul Rehder forever. I think that's because Paul Rehder likes to hold on to the most amazing stylists and colorists. Liddy has been cutting my hair for at least 15 years... I moved away for a while a few years back, and when I returned she was still there, still somehow able to get me in for a cut, color and blow dry within a reasonable time (I never make an appointment until I NEED an appointment). Liddy has always worked with me as I matured over the years to make sure my hair style and color stayed pace with my age and my needs. She even helped me give up color completely for a couple years even though that meant less work for her! When I decided to go back to color, she helped me work out a highlights/low-lights approach that doesn't have me running in every 3-4 weeks but looks polished and professional. Can't always have the 'best of both worlds' but with my hair color, I do. When I leave her I have bouncy, shiny, manageable hair with a lot of depth in the color. The brand new Paul Rehder Salon is a great experience. The location is special - more so after staying such a long time at the old Rush street location. Out is the narrow stairwell and dated space from the Rush street location and in is the private elevator and the large, open and light filled new salon layout. Even the rear of the space - where most color is done (thankfully) the large windows provide beautiful light. Also, the staff at Paul Rehder are all pleasant and professional. Great shampoos, serene surroundings and muffled acoustics make the salon an almost 'spa' experience. While they use top notch products I have never felt any pressure to buy products or additional services. I highly recommend Paul Rehder Salon and suggest that if you can, you make your cut and color appointment with Liddy McClain. She's that good! read more

Her color work is amazing. (I've lived in NYC for two years where no one could get it quite right). She also does excellent cuts, which is another plus. The salon itself is lovely. 65 dollars for a blow out. I have long hair. When done by a professional, it normally takes 20/25 min to blowout my hair. There was nothing wrong with the blow out. It wasn't perfect but it wasn't bad either. I'm from out of town so I don't know how this price compares to other places in the region. It seemed a bit expensive to me. read more

This review is for Nicole Jacob, who shaped my eyebrows. She is wonderful! I cannot stress this enough, she truly knows what is up with eyebrows. I've been to many eyebrow specialists in the city by way of me super-researching, and I stopped because I felt like no one could understand what I really wanted or my fickle Vietnamese eyebrows. Which is quite simple - just a natural look that goes with my face. They always took way too much off, or trimmed so much, that it was very noticeable that my eyebrows were trimmed (hopefully that makes sense). I believe that eyebrow specialists need to at least have some knowledge on all types of eyebrows, because they are definitely differences across ethnicities. Therefore, I was hesitant with going to someone again to shape my eyebrows, because I felt like no one had enough experience to shape mine. However, I couldn't do my own eyebrows anymore. I didn't want to mess them up after growing them out, and trimming them myself was a horrible idea. So I decided to go with Nicole because of her glowing reviews on the web, and I was able to make an appointment the same day (this morning actually). She did an amazing job - even before touching my brows, Nicole assessed my eyebrows and face shape, and gave me her opinion on what I needed. I also like that she has a conservative approach to eyebrows, and that she didn't just shape with abandon. In addition, I judge eyebrow specialists by their own eyebrows, and hers are perfect for her, so I immediately felt like I was in good hands. I highly recommend Nicole for eyebrow shaping, no matter what stage you are with your eyebrows. Not only is she professional and friendly, but her personality makes you feel comfortable and right at home, even in a very high-end salon. Hairstylist: ESTHER LING I've been driving 3 hours from Indpls to Chicago 4x / year for approx 10 years just to get my hair cut by Esther. (Granted, I am from the area & I get my seasonal shopping done at the same time.) 1. The main reason I like her haircuts is that it even when it grows out (& out & out), even 12 weeks later, it still looks really good & is very stylable. I don't want to spend too much time thinking about, working on my appearance, but still need a lot of return for the little time I do invest. so the time I invest in Esther's haircuts really pays off for me. And I always get lots of compliments (from my high-maintenance friends) after a haircut. 2. Simply, she is excellent at her craft. I know if I wanted a style that was radically different, she could execute it well & make it work for me. She recommended my wedding hairstyle which turned out to be fabulous - a low ponytail off to the side with white flowers. She can envision a lot of easy styles for you & give you instructions so your hair doesn't look the same everyday. I always leave w/a different way to style my hair - most importantly, easily. 3. Her approach to beauty & style is organic, natural. Just as the other professionals (e.g., physician, dentist, personal trainer, etc) in your life can influence your perspective on your health or fitness, I consider her role larger than a hair cutter. Her perspective on beauty is not the heavily stylised, objectified glamour common in our culture, it's more European: her esthetic is natural, effortless beauty. And it is not bad for women! The way she sees beauty affects the way I see my own beauty. Just the top 3 reasons Esther is great at her work. read more
