You know the place is legit when George is behind the counter and talking German to a customer! This was my first time stopping in, even though I've driven by it for years, and I'm glad I did! Just the quaintest little market/deli, with the friendliest and most helpful staff. I was very pleased to see it so busy on a Saturday morning, which is always a good sign for an independent business. After browsing the market, we ordered sandwiches and a couple of draft beers from the deli, then enjoyed our lunch out on the covered patio. My wife and her mother are near 100% German, so stopping here on our way to Riverside was a no brainer. We arrived at about 10:30 and right away my wife's mother was in hog heaven. They have a great meat counter full of blood sausages and pig knuckles, along with other items liked smoked wursts that I find more appealing. They also have other German food items and drinks that would help round out any St. Nicholas party you may be planning. We picked up some chocolates for our December 6th St. Nicholas party. We sat down and ordered the sausage plate and were not disappointed. The German potato salad was good. Potatoes had a touch of firmness and the sauce was nicely balanced between sweet and sour. The sausages had a nice firm casing on them, which is important for keeping all those fatty juices inside. We washed it down with a couple German beers from the tap and were on our way. The only problem with this place is that my house is not next door. For if it was closer, I might just be going to George's every week. Next time I go I'm getting the Rueben on their freshly baked rye bread. read more

George's is IT, look no further. I thought I knew German food... But wow, this is a whole new experience. Killer beer selection. Current fav is Franziskaner Weissbier Naturtrüb. And I never knew so many things could be made out of almonds. Marzipan rocks... Especially European sweets where they never overload with sugar. Try a loaf of the fresh rye. You'll want it to go with the outstanding deli meats. Words cannot describe the pleasure. I'm working my way through the case, but my current favorites are the veal bologna with garlic, the smoked liverwurst and all of the salamis. Grab some mustard too. So many mustards, so little time. The staff is outstanding. They have helped me learn their inventory. They offer a taste of things and make a sampler when you just can't decide. George is a wonder and refers to himself as "just an old butcher". So cute! But it is the women behind the counters that make George's so unique. Even though I am a fresh face, the staff makes me feel like family. If you happen to go in during the weekday German is the predominant language. Calimesa is an hour drive from where I live but it's so worth it. Just remember that the meats have no preservatives, so you need to buy what you will use in a couple of days. Or be bold and freeze some things. Though at my house, the food from George's never lingers long in the fridge! I am 3/4 kraut, and I have been to Germany many times, and I know good German grub! The German rye bread and dinkelbrot is good and healthy. They also have some lovely jarred pickle and carrot concoctions that are spicy and delicious! The deli meats and salads are amazing, they have good cheeses (mmm strong swiss), and the potato salad is top-drawer! These guys have an amazing selection of beer too. Prost! They also have hot food. i don't eat pork, so not much for me in this department. I don't eat sweets too often, but they had Ritter Sport chocolate, which is huge in Germany. They have other imported candy from Germany too (and Austria). The marzipan is very tasty, I must say. Be sure to try it for something that goes beyond the norm. I always seem to be passing by on the 10 just after they close (5 pm) or on a Sunday or Monday, which is probably good for my cholesterol. When I do have the good fortune of stopping in, I am a glutton. A huge german beer for $2-3. Head cheese, crazy sausage selections, authentic german marketplace with this mustard which comes in a tube that I am obsessed with. George himself is a really nice guy, and interesting to chat with for a few minutes each visit. I wish I could travel back in time to when he was still breaking down whole hogs and beef quarters, and making his own sausages, but such is life. read more

We've been here 3 times already. Each time I have tried something different every time. First was a Black Forest ham sammy... Delicious!! Second, was their Reuben, fanfuckingtasic. Third time, my husband and I picked out some German crackers off the shelf and got an assorted array of different cheeses and sausages from the deli. They have the best sausages and cold cuts in Southern California. Best Ruben sandwich I've had. They offer authentic German delicacy's your not likely to find anywhere else. This place serves as a deli and doubles as for German grocery. Staff is friendly, and food is cooked fresh to order. This is definitely the place to come if your feeling something new, or something fresh. While you might pay a few dollars more, you'll find a deep selection of German, Austrian, Dutch and Hungarian products. Calvé, Underberg, Tabac and other Central European daily staples are on display. The deli selection is massive, with head cheese, corned beef, rollmops and a selection of wursts sourced from a Los Angeles sausage-maker. In the freezer, you'll encounter herring and blutwurst. As for the food, it's not a full service kitchen, so I'd recommend their cold cuts. Nonetheless, I typically order the Reuben and overlook the fact that it spent a minute or two in the microwave. Places like this are increasingly rare in Southern California and almost extinct in the IE. So show them your support, enjoy a warm weekend afternoon in Calimesa and keep the tap flowing. read more

Best bacon on Calimesa Boulevard according to George. He's wrong, but he won't listen... Best bacon in California... seriously. Bacon is important. The majority of bacon in the U.S. is made from belly pork which is okay but is a cheap mostly fat cut. The majority of bacon in Europe is from the back of the pig (around the loin), hence Back Bacon, it's leaner, much more meaty and just amazing. George has glorious slabs of finest imported Danish Back Bacon. If you like Bacon, you will like George, he has good bacon for you. This is German Deli, carrying lots of imported groceries for German ex-pats. Lots of interesting groceries here. But the main attraction is the deli counter.. did I mention the bacon yet? The deli is also stocked with an excellent range of sausage, cheese and meat cuts. George also has a outdoor seating are where you can enjoy a bratwurst lunch and a beer. This place is a hidden gem. If you've ever been to George's Market more than once you're most likely of Teutonic ancestry and quite adept at pubcrawlin'. Why??? Because above all else this place is all about the beer. As it is said across the pond in the old country, "Beer is liquid manna from Heaven". In the beer case at George's has to be at least 15 different brewery brands and 50 brews. Call me a taxi... Before I even get out of my truck I'm digging 3 bucks outta my wallet. As you walk in the front door, the cashier is to your left. Right behind her is the tap for the Warsteiners. It is useless to resist. Just hand over the cash to the nice lady and have a glass of beer. Come on folks, where else can you do your grocery shopping and engage in bier trinkin at the same time? I just love this place. If George is there and the place is not busy, you best grab a second glass of beer to last you through the conversation because George is a very interesting character with lots of cool stories. The deli has large sundries of pre-packaged German kitchen fair that can be found in just about any other German deli in SoCal, but what sets Georges above the rest is the meat case. O_M_G !!! This is a carnivores dream come true. I'm having a chill running up & down my spine as I think about it. Homemade knockwurst, bockwurst, bratwurst, wieners, roast beef, pastrami, German (garlic) bologna, ringwurst, liverwurst, etc... About the only meat they don't have that I slather over is German horseradish bologna as I've had in Cincinnati & Buffalo. I would be derelict in my writing not to mention something, or many things, about the bacon that George's sells. Every guy knows darn well that bacon is God's #1 gift to man, even if we don't admit it to our wives. Over at Stater Brothers where they claim "it's our meats that made us famous" you can get decent thick sliced bacon, but it cain't hold a candle to Georges bacon. I grew up in a rural area where we actually bought our meats from the local butcher, and the bacon was always back bacon. Belly bacon was always left attached to the ribs. Georges bacon is either center loin or sirloin back bacon. DEEEEEEEELICIOUS!!!!! Once you try Georges bacon you'll never go back to Staters again. Now, once your mini shopping cart is loaded down with beer & meat, do not, I repeat do NOT, neglect to pause at the kuchen case. Their strudels are absolutely dynamite, and they also have these fantastic chocolate covered pastries that are chock full of chocolate cream filling. If you're a dude whose wife isn't too keen on your purchases of beer & bacon from here, just bring home one of these nussecken to your better half and I can just about guarantee that you're gonna get lucky. read more

George is great fun to talk to if you get the chance, he will go into GREAT detail about what each sausage is and where it originated from. Being part-German and having access to "Oma's" cooking and having been in Germany itself I can't exactly put a 5 star golden seal of approval on all their food. The sandwiches are wonderful, but my potato salad fell a bit short honestly. That said, everything about this store is absolutely amazing. It's great to see a German deli, out here, in what I consider to be pretty much of a culinary desert. Let's face it, chain restaurants and fast food places are in abundance. Good little places are hard to find. Unfortunately, I think I made a mistake. I wasn't really hungry and decided to get a turkey sandwich for my munchkin. Based on the reviews, it should have been a pastrami or a frank. Everyone around me was drinking beer, and I didn't get any of that, either. My munchkin's turkey sandwich was entirely forgettable. I tasted it and wasn't impressed. There is an extensive selection of food, but the pastries were the only thing tempting me, and they were expensive and didn't look super fresh. When the food is combined with the fact that the woman behind the cash register wasn't at all friendly, I can easily skip this place in the future. read more

Makes it a real treat when you don't eat here more than once a week but IT IS POSSIBLE, SOO GOOD! Our order is always 2 Reubens, 2 German Potato Salads, and 2 pickles! Their pickles are better than any pickles from any deli I have ever been to. If I could buy the giant can of them I would, so try one they are only $1!!! we arrange travel time every trip from Santa Cruz county to the desert to be able to stop at George's. We love the service and all sausage types we've tried. Father loves bratwurst which is not the big favorite of mine. I love the kielbasa and spicy links. I've also bought some of the packaged products like the dark brown bread, some licorice and a stone ground mustard. The bear claw or similar type pastry was so delicious we hid it from sharingoops!. Heading down Calimesa Road to get on the freeway, I spy a little German Market!! I had to stop as the area in which I live has virtually no German food -- the closest being the Red Lion in Los Angeles. This place is GREAT! There is a meat/cheese case running along two sides of the place and a sea of German packaged foods, chocolate, cookies and beer on the other. As it was an unplanned stop, I only got a few chocolates and a couple different double bocks for my husband. The place was crowded and that usually means that it's a hit. I will be back. read more
