UGD serves up quality deli food with authentic flavors at reasonable prices It's clear why this place has been open for decades. As I was buying my sausages. soft pretzels, and potato salad, the lady said very little to me and the gentleman, nothing at all. When I tried speaking German, the lady said she didn't remember much of the language anymore. This blunt, "tell it like it is" way of interacting is pretty much how my family used to be, so I found it familiar -- even comforting. But it's easy to see how this can rub people the wrong way, especially if they're used to American (or even modern German) - style customer service. Everyone who found this rude is making reasonable statements. But to me this is more a case of people who have been doing the same thing for a long time without making updates. Decor-wise, place also seems to recreating the Germany that someone remembers from decades ago. The blue and white bunting, the beer steins, the picture of the Pope and other memorabilia make the place feel distinctly Bavarian, in a touristy way. A lot of places in Germany, even in the more traditional south have moved on. But my hope is that this place does continue until the proprietors retire with dignity or sell the business to some German-Americans with a passion for prepping and selling this type of food. read more

Food is good. I've never ordered here before but the lady helping me was very rude. She wasn't clear and seem to treat me like I was an inconvenience to her. I'm not sure if this is her normal behavior but if you wanted to be treated nicely when going to a place you don't know... this isn't for you. My first time here and service is disappointing & all she did was take my order. But if you wanna try the food buckle up cause she isn't a sweet old lady. 3.5 Stars First visit and had a decent experience. We stopped in to grab some lunch and noticed that they offer "Take Out Only", even though there were a couple small tables/chairs inside. The couple running the store didn't have the greatest customer service/communication skills, and I was a little disappointed in the side dishes for our lunches. My wife and I ordered the Bratwurst Plates ($9.50) which came with a choice of one of three types of brats, 2 sides, and bread or bun. The brats were delicious and super flavorful; however, the sides were only "okay". The sauerkraut was on the sweet side, with no acidity, the warm German potato salad seemed to be missing something, pickles and mustard, maybe, and the macaroni salad was mayo heavy. This could all be personal preference, but I've had better. I did love the meat, cheese, and pastry cases and the store portion. We picked up some veal brats, rye bread, and other German goodies (red cabbage and crispy pickles) to take home. They have German greeting cards and all kinds of other sundries. This cute mom and pop shop serves great food! I'm new to the area and I've gone back 3x ever since I first tried it. Since the Alpine Village closed down, I have been driving EVERYWHERE to find its replacement. I was born in Germany, so my taste buds always crave a piece of home in the form of food. I found a recommendation online and it mentioned the cutest shop owners, so I was pretty excited to try this place out. When I walked in, the cutest old lady was sitting at one of the three tables at the entrance. I thought, great-- they allow dine in! I can soak in all the German before I leave and maybe even talk German to the owners!! They have a great selection, but are sold out of many things. Customer service is a little dry and it seemed as though every interaction was internally painful. I did not feel welcomed AT ALL and almost uncomfortable being there. When I received the food, I still asked to sit at the table and to my surprise was told that dine in is not allowed..... and when you look closely-- they have a sign on each table saying "TAKE OUT ONLY". Why keep the tables?? I had to eat in the car and I don't know if it was my sour taste for the place, but the food do not reach its potential. Made a wrong turn and stumbled upon a place that has the best Ruben, dollar for dollar, I have ever had! The pic shows just half the sandwich on a 9 inch plate...portioned out that would cost just $4.37. Yep, the whole darn samich is only $8.75. But, like the rest of San Bernardino County, it's home to its fair share of popular frill-less food stops. One local gem is Upland German Deli, the sole German-centric restaurant in the Inland Valley. Originally opened in 1977, the deli is now owned by elderly, Austrian-born proprietors Kristine and Edward Konefat. Blink and you'll miss the unpretentious off-white strip mall that Upland German Deli calls home, tucked away behind a Taco Bell and Starbucks. The Boar's Head neon sign and "Take Out Only" sign are visible through the tinted window. But step inside to find a homey, personalized delicatessen and market. The checkerboard-clothed tables up front are littered with supplies and knick-knacks. The whitewashed walls to the right are decorated with countless framed certificates from local newspapers; the exposed brick to the left has tchotchkes that you might otherwise find in a grandmother's living room. Further back, shelves are stocked with a cute selection of German refrigerated and pantry goods, from canned herring to frozen bratwurst. The Konefats are the only employees, slicing meats and carrying pastry trays behind the deli and bakery counter. German oompha public radio echoes unobtrusively around the walls. My partner and I visited Upland German Deli on a whim during a recent trip from Los Angeles to Big Bear, and we opted to try the Reuben Sandwich with pastrami with sides of German Potato Salad and a soft pretzel. Our resulting takeout box was surprisingly heavy, and we hustled to a nearby coffee shop to dig in. The rye bread on the sandwich was a step above the grocery store variety. One slice of bread ended up soggy from the watery, sweet gherkin-style sauerkraut, but I appreciated that both slices were generously slathered with the mustard-y Thousand Island-esque spread. The hefty portion of thinly sliced, deli meat pastrami was tender but not particularly flavorful -- don't expect Langer's-esque melt-in-your-mouth meat. The potato salad was totally unique: it featured a mustard-y dressing (rather than mayo-based), and it was served warm. Finally, the pretzel felt dry and stale, and its salt crystals were poorly distributed. I found myself wanting a side of mustard to amp it up. The service is person was sorely inefficient, but our bill ran a reasonable $15. Upland German Deli may be the best (only?) German restaurant and market around, but it's also a testament to why German cuisine isn't more ubiquitous. The prepared food is hearty and authentic, but it's nothing to go out of your way for. This place is truly a gem. There's nothing else like it practically across all of LA and SB counties. I drive 30min-1hr in traffic just to come here because it's that worth it. The husband and wife (owners) are very nice and authentic once they warm up to you. Let it be known, the owner lady (who I share the same exact name with) is really off-putting lol. She has a strange personality that really does come off as rude. BUT, she told us that's her schtick. My husband, who's of German descent, was pretty pissed by her attitude. She said she was joking and that she's known for being that way. We were honestly just like wtf lol. My husband enjoyed his Nuremberg bratwurst which comes with 2 sides. The sides came out nice and warm, they were good! The potato salad almost tastes like a peppered pasta. Sauerkraut was yummy. Somewhat congenial old folks run this place, but the service is incredibly slow and dysfunctional because they have difficulties remembering and keeping track of orders. Due to the wait, I got stuck in nightmare traffic, which put me in a sour mood. I can't even say that it's worth the trouble, because they also got my order wrong. I called back the next day expecting to be offered a refund, but she simply said "I think you received a Bavarian Burger, instead of the Bavarian sandwich. Sorry." and hung up on me. I even looked at their menu and still have no idea what type of sandwich they gave me. If I were you, I would stay away from this place until new owners take it over. Food was decent. Service was interesting. I grew up with an Omi who taught me to cook most of the food they offer here. Overall the ambience reminds me of a small old school deli. Which is what I grew up with. The only sad part is you can't eat on location. They knew the same person my Omi worked for at the Continental Deli. We found this German Deli in October 2020. Our good friend hosted an Oktoberfest at their home. We wanted to keep it as authentic as possible so we found this little German Deli in Upland. It didn't t disappoint. We stocked up on a variety of German Bratwurst, spicy mustard, pickle fiesta veggies mix and some freshly baked pretzels. Everything was a hit at the Oktoberfest party! Since then we have been coming back for all their amazing and fresh food. I highly recommend that if you're craving some German food definitely pay them a visit. Don't mind the shop owner. She's a firecracker with a wicked sense of humor. I know some of the previous post say she's rude, but she's not! She just has a very dry wicked sense of humor. This place has the closest to what he remembers, and everything we've gotten so far has been delicious. The last time we came in, we got Nuremberg brats, and grilled them at home, and had their homemade sauerkraut on the side. It was amazing! Wow, never have I had such a hard time deciding what to get, because everything looked so great. Due to my poor decision-making abilities, I simply gave up and picked two things that seemed to have pictures. Ordered the sauerbrauten and cabbage rolls, both solid German dishes that came out perfectly! The sauerbrauten was perfectly marinated and absolutely melted in your mouth evenly enough for me to taste the sauce and meat simultaneously. The cabbage rolls were also very tasty, with the cabbage being easy to chew through, allowing me to easily get at the stuffed goodies inside. As my sides, I had German potato salad, Swiss potato salad, the spaetzle (I hate to call it German pasta, but that gives you a vague idea of what it is) and red cabbage. All of these were great and made each dish a full meal with diverse flavors. That being said, the standouts were the Swiss potato salad and the spaetzle. The Swiss potato salad was mustardy and refreshing, which you'll simply like if you like mustard, which I did as a dangerous mustard supremacist and average potato enjoyer. The spaetzle was actually my favorite - I usually like spaetzle, but this one came out fresh, warm, and chewy. The edges were only lightly fried, so you could enjoy a roasted exterior covering a chewey inside. Really a level of attention to dough-making and preparation that I very rarely see in Western food (where it's often relegated as a neglected "non-hip" staple). Overall, super excited to try this place out again and get one of these dishes again. The flavor for each sandwich was incredible. Nothing beats a freshly made good German sandwich. The German potato salad as well as the coleslaw were incredible and taste wholly different from the American versions. If you appreciate traditional German food or would like to try it out, this is the place to go. You can go wrong with anything on the menu, it is just different from American style food. They are usually a bit busy so there may be a bit of wait, but everything is made fresh and is worth the wait. While you are waiting for your food, look around the store at their market and imported items. Items like Red Cabbage, Sauerkraut, pickles and freshly made German pastries are also well worth the price. This is a family business who take their meals very seriously, so much care is put into their food. I have heard that they are rude but in all my time have never experienced that kind of service although you must remember that the German way of communication might be misconstrued vs how we communicate here in California. I made the mistake of ordering a dinner plate in a deli......so I'll take some of the blame and keep it at 4 stars. I read about this place in a travel magazine and decided to give it a try. I ordered the sauerbraten....here is the description from their menu: "Heavily marinated steak with a brown gravy" As you can see from my picture, I received sliced deli roast beef (not marinated), with some gravy on top. Not terrible tasting, but not sauerbraten. The meal came with a nice piece of rye bread, so I made a sandwich with beef. So, why 4 stars? That red cabbage, it was delicious, I would order a gallon of that stuff. The Spaetzle was solid as well. (Kinda funny a German deli misspells it on the menu) I also ordered one of their pastries. I've been craving sauerbraten for weeks. I'm finally in Rancho when the German deli has it. They are normally sold out when I'm here. What a disappointing meal! The meat tasted like a deli roast beef in a packaged brown gravy. No sour taste at all. Maybe I should share my great grandmothers recipe with them .
