Back when I lived in Sunnyvale around 2007, I happened upon Georgesen Hair Design when it was on Mathilda. My hair is pretty much the standard straight, flat Asian hair, so finding someone to do something good with it has been a challenge. He did amazing work back then and left quite an impression. A little over a decade later after moving out of the area and trying many other stylists, none quite have matched my tastes such as this place. And so I decided to just make the trek whenever I need to to visit this artist. He always skillfully works masterpieces of no compare. Georgesen Hair Design is that spectacular. read more

I visited Georgesen after my previous perm was almost washed-out. The reason why I picked Georgesen was: (1) The hair stylists are Taiwanese, (2) My previous perm was done in Taiwan, and (3) I was hoping to get the same perm again from them. However, after consulting with George, he recommended another type of perm (not the same as the previous one), and he said that my hair would look better with the new perm. Ta-da. After the perm, my hair was completely damaged. I was very angry at the fact that George didn't tell me about that IN ADVANCE. He kept saying "OMG your hair is damaged" after the perm. Dude, I can see that, stop repeating yourself. I totally hated my hair. 2 weeks later I called George and told him that I couldn't bare to see my hair in such a terrible condition, so I asked him if he can give me a (free) haircut since it was his fault not telling me how bad my hair would become. He was like, "Oh you should come in for hair treatment! It would be a lot better." I asked, "How much is the hair treatment?" He said, "Including shampoo it would be around $100." I swear to god that I will never go back to that place again, not mentioning that I spent $220 for perm, haircut, and shampoo and realized that all my money had gone into waste with damaged, yellowish hair. Did I mention how rude they were? Oh yeah, let me tell you. Since I speak Mandarin, they kept making jokes about me. I almost flipped out on them but realizing that my fate was in their hands. Therefore I just laughed and didn't say crap. They were like, "Are you okay? We are just joking!!!" Pshh, shut the fxxx up; I don't need your joke. I am very very picky about my hair because I went to a Cosmetic Vocational High School for three years to learn about cutting hair, make-up, massage, etc and worked at a salon in Taipei for a few years. However, when I just moved to San Jose from Taiwan, I didn't know where to go to do my hair so I tried some high-end American hair salons (Caucasian hairstylists). They charge for hair cut and washing hair separately (and the shampoo skills are not even close to what we have in Taipei), and the price starts from $50 for a hair cut even when all I need is a level cut for my long hair (and the result is not even level). I was very disappointed; that was 8+ years ago. Then I found a Taiwanese hairstylist in Cupertino and she had done my hair for the next 6 years. She is good but you know that we always want to try something new after staying with someone for a long time. So when I saw one of my girl friends got a very nice haircut last year that makes me want to try a different stylist (since George is also from Taiwan too). I have had him do my hair 3 or 4 times in the past two years already (straitening twice with haircut and Moisturizing dye twice) and I was happy every time. The hair washing skills are the best (just like the salon back in Taipei), and George's hair cut skills are very detailed and patient. I was warned by my friend that George has strong opinions on what looks good on his clients and he will not necessary always do what he was told. But he told me that every head that walks out of his store are his reputations and he just can't cut the hair the way the clients' want when he knows the hair style on the magazine isn't going to look good on that client. I see his point and trusted him but I would still try to negotiate a little on what I want. :-p However, I have to say that not everyone understands or appreciate George's Taiwanese style cold jokes (I think making fun of clients is one of them). I was a little bit uncomfortable the first half hour when I went in to do my hair the first time but very soon I started making jokes on him too. We had good laugh every time I went over there and everyone treated me nicely. I don't think they are that expensive when compared with American hair salons, but you can find something cheaper in other Asian hair salons. As long as I feel I am getting what I paid for, I am cool with it. Oh, Jon (another hairstylist) speaks good English so I think his translation to George shouldn't be too much off (just my guess). 2009 Update: I've been a loyal customer since 2007. I didn't complain that the fees went up after all these years because it was worth it. However, Jon has lost his touch and had one of those off days. I understand that people are human. But I have lost respect on how Jon and the owner handle it. Jon spent 1 hour on my hair and I asked for the usual. During the process he was distracted by the tv and did a major miss cut. Basically, I have an Alfafa Sprout. He said don't worry it would grow out in four days. No apology or discount. I got slapped with the worst hair cut and basic color. Because my 1st and 2nd choice were all booked I was skeptical of Georgesen after reading the reviews but decided anyway because I am going on vacation. I made a same day appointment. When I got there to my surprise Jon still remembered me. I'm VERY picky about my hair and go to great length to communicate with all hair stylist even though I do not speak their language. Recently I dyed my hair blue-black so cutting quality layers are tough. Out of all the stylish I've had over the years I'm impressed with Jon's technic- "the inside out layering". I'm a working professional and requested the definition layers but didn't want to look like Harajuki-Teenie-Bopper. I'm completely satisfied with my hair because it's quality layers that does not flair and it is low maintenance. Not bad for $55 given that my sister has the same cut for $250 in LA. read more

George does charge an arm an a leg for fabulous hair. $200+ if you want to perm, color, or do anything with your hair other than just cutting it. $60 for a regular haircut with shampoo. Of course, they expect a tip on top of that too. George certainly has its own aesthetics and it takes some time getting used to. He received his trainings in Japan so his techniques are excellent and very different. He is Taiwanese and barely speaks any English but he has an assistant who can help you translate what you want. It generally takes me some time getting used to my new styles walking out of Georgesen everytime, but I have always grown to like it. It is certainly different and that is the premium price you pay for. But then again, beauty is priceless! This place is clean, well equipped and provides a good head massage when you shampoo. They also serve you tea and have a little flat screen TV for your enjoyment. They do trim your bangs for free if you need to come back for a trimming. read more

I work next door. I assumed since the location was expensive getting a hair cut here was expensive so I never dared to go in, plus the guys that work here have a staring problem. I finally decided my bangs needed to be trimmed so I walked in. I can hardly understand them. I asked how much it would cost for a bangs trim and well, after my co-worker going in as well.. after all that it's FREE.. so, that was upside. I had to go back and forth to these people. I felt uncomfortable at first, because the guys kept laughing at me. When I finally got my bangs trimmed by the Owner, George.. I was kind of annoyed on how he insisted a "straight trim" for my bangs wouldn't be nice and to do something... I went along with it and it actually turned out cute.. he also styled it a little bit. A few of my members get their hair done here and the outcome is stunning. All in all I'd say this place is ALRIGHT just because of the first impression. But, my boyfriend loves my hair! read more

First of all, you have to be able to speak chinese. Nobody can really speak english. All I can say about this salon is "like home." I will definitely go back and recommend to people who likes high quality of work. -Due to the high living standard in the bay area, this place is not pricey as other high-end salon I have been to. They use high quality products from Shiseido of Japan, not cheap shampoo from supermarket. -Don't compare them with "Supercut" or other family salons. The stylists are trained and have more than 10-20 years of experiences in salon business. "THEY KNOW WHAT THEY ARE DOING" -The price list are right at their front counter. If you think the price is not reasonable, you can leave without charge. Plus, you can always go back to have your bangs trim it for free if it grows longer. George is Taiwanese but trained in Japan. He was pretty good. He spent a good amount of time listening to what I wanted with my hair (since I was chopping off 10 inches) in a shorter style. He then made suggestions as to what would be the best for me. I think he did a pretty good job. He charged $43 bucks for the haircut (if you want your hair washed there, it's an extra $20 I think). He uses Shiseido hair products. The decor inside is very modern and clean. There was also another stylist there at the time. It's not too crazy inside. read more

I have been going to Georgesen Hair for the past year now. This place has by far been the best place go get a haircut, color, or any type of styling for both men and women. The staff is very friendly and knowledgeable on what hair styles best fit each client. When you enter, you are greeted with a smile and offered tea and snacks. I personally get my hair cut, colored and styled by Auriel (the hottest chick working there). She knows just what you want in your newest look. They use the best quality hair products out there (Sesheido). I always leave the salon satisfied and confident about my new look. Also, if you want the best head massage in the world, you should go to her too. My overall recommendation is to make your next appointment at Georgesen Hair Design and ask for Auriel. My co-worker is a long time customer with Georgesen and she recommended me to give it a try. So, I called and made an apportionment on a friday afternoon. Before I stepped into the salon, I was a bit skeptical and felt the price was quite expensive for a guy's cut ($48). I went with my wife because my co-worker told me Jon mostly speaks Mandarin and my mandarin is very so-so. When my wife and I stepped into the salon, we were greeted immediately and were presented with a hot cup of green tea (Great initial impression). Then Jon came by and asked if we spoke Mandarin and my wife told him she did but I did not... However, I would say Jon's English was decent enough that there was no communication barrier. Although he liked to speak in Mandarin, he would repeat in English if he knew I had trouble understanding it. To the most important part: The haircut turned out really good. Although it was not exactly the style I was looking for, Jon cut a style (which is similar to the photo I gave him) that was easy to manage and trendy. For the price of $48, I would say it was worth it. I especially liked the shampoo (some kind of mint in it) they used and it felt so refreshing. Pros: great service. Jon was very friendly and opened to suggestions on what I like. Nice haircut technique and my hair ending up with a lot of layers which I could just apply some wax to make it look very cool. Cons: Quite pricey for a guy like me who needs a trim every six weeks. Also, they should have better technique to prevent water from leaking into my shirt when washing my hair (although it was minor) Overall, it was a great experience and I would recommend to anyone who would like to get a trendy asian haircut. read more

I have been their client for over 2 years now and do not have any of the negative experience as mentioned by some of you. I have searched high and low to find a place like this and am very happy with their services and level of professionalism (last ten years, I have been scoping out places here and there and never the same Salon twice). If you like trendy style, this is the place to be. My disputes to some of the comments as follow: * The place is expensive - Shouldn't you scope out the place before going (in terms of their pricing). To me, it's just common sense; * Stylist cannot speak English - Is it a crime that the Stylist cannot speak English? For god sake, he is still learning. Give the man a break; * The Stylist cut or style however they like - If it's a hair cut, I would take their opinions into consideration and seriously; after all, they are the professionals and you are not. They know what cut is good for your face - unless all you care about is the latest trendy regardless how they look on you (even the hair cut don't look on you). Styling, who cares; go home and restyle it yourself. This place has a lot of mixed reviews depending on if you speak Chinese or not. George, the main stylist is very good and loves his job. His English isn't that good but his assistants can help translate. Bring a photo if you have something in mind, otherwise let him do his magic. I have medium length hair and got two Japanese straight perms from George. Both cost about $240 each which includes the haircut. I use a SLS-free shampoo so that the perm lasts about a year. That's a good price to pay for hassle-free hair in the morning. I save at least 10 minutes each day not flat ironing my hair. read more

George is excellent at shampooing and head massaging. Speaking of a hair cut, maybe it depends on if his taste matches yours. Because I knew that he does not speak English, I brought a picture from a style magazine for his reference. However, he cut my hair too much shorter than the model in the picture. At the end, he kept saying "Cute, cute" in broken English, but for me, his cut did not look good for my age. It would have been OK if I were 10 years younger though. (I think George is around my age or just a bit younger, so he should know what is good for a woman in my age.) I saw him 3 times, but I have never been satisfied. I have been to George for my hair styling since 2011, and so far so good, never have a complain! He seems to understand very well the behavior of our hair and always accommodated to our requests. The salon is clean and very nice ambience. Some people may think it's bit costly but I guess this is the price we pay for good service and 100% attention from the stylist! I have lived in Sunnyvale for a few years and tried this salon out on a fluke. The salon is next to where I get my nails done so I thought I would give it a try as it would make things more convenient. It is the first salon that I have considered giving any kind of loyalty to since moving here. I had still been going to the East Bay most of the time for a cut. It is so difficult finding someone that you love when you move to a new city, and I had found some really bad stylists prior to finding George. I showed up a bit early for my appointment because I know how hairstylists hate it when your late. It also gave me the opportunity to watch George work. I have to say that you can tell by the attention to detail he gives each cut and style he really loves what he is doing. The customer service is wonderful and you get a full scalp and neck massage during your shampoo. George is still working on his English but his assistant is more than capable at translating when needed. They both really listened to what I was looking for in the shape and functionality of the cut and I am extremely happy with the work they did. They are both professional and friendly. I am definitely going to become a loyal customer. I am really looking forward to my next cut. I have not had any color done and I don't perm my hair so I left a star off till I find out how he does with coloring. read more

I have always been a SuperCuts kinda guy, but when my buddy's wife who is a makeup artist suggested George and Jon for my now exGF, I thought I would try them out as well. They did great work on her hair, it is a bit kinky for a Chinese girl and George did the Japanese style straightening and coloring for her, and while a bit pricey, we were both really happy with the results. I have wavy hair when it gets long and therefore I try to keep it short but, I let too much time go between cuts. Jon and George have both cut my hair and done it exactly they way I like it, George even got me to use product and I have never used product since I was a little kid and used some goo in a tube. I have got my haircut there several times now... I can only say it is very intersting experience. Originally I was refered by my friend, who's hair looks fashionable (Asian Style, that is). One day I decided to "Change" style, with the price that I could usually get 3 cut for, I was very skeptical at first. However, if you were to get cut and wash at a regular salon, it wasn't that cheap too. So I had George to do my hair, and I explained that I want to change to a new style and my concern about limitations, and I left the rest to the Pro's suggestion. I admit, at first it took me a while to get used to the new look, cuz I am so used to the same-o-look, and new hair requires more effort to maintain the style. A surprise thing is that some girl friends of mine immidiately noticed the BIG difference right after the cut and could tell it was a style cut, isntead of the family cut. One thing very interesting is that George say he would change style everytime, and to see what degree of styles I could go for, and that, I call it personalized styling. Can't wait for my next cut~ Pro: Great Asian style, works with your style in mind and discuss possibilities. Great ambience, by appointment so no wait in line. I believe you probably need to be asian to like this place since the owner is a taiwanese and he doesn't speak much English. The other stylist, Jon, seems like cut the guy's hair more often. They know how to cut the chinese/japanese hair and George will give you a lot of advice (again, you have to speak chinese to communicate with them well!). The place is neat, very clean with LCD TV. They provide hot tea and some snack when you come in. I like my hair cut but this is kind of pricey salon. The problem is it is so hard to find a good stylist who can cut the asian chinese hair in Bay Area. They charge $20 for shampoo, $80 coloring and above $40 for hair cut. I have short, corse and thick hair, so i'm pretty picky with haircuts. I heard about George and I decided to check it out despite some of the negative reviews about his language skills. I LOVE MY HAIRCUT...the communication was good, of course not in english, Regardless, english or not, this guy knows what he's doing. have 3 perm in this store~ the first one was really good and i was impressed for the quality and skill they have. after they move to the new place, it was still good until the assistant Ruby left for few month, the quality of the service was totally went down! each time i pay $230-290 w/ tips the last time, i was wishing to pay him no money as he actually damage my hair badly after i wash hair 3 days later, i was totally shocked with the "new" hair i have! I decided to get my haircut at Georgesen a while back because a friend had told me that the owner here moved here from Taiwan to open his own studio. I love having my hair done when I travel back to Taiwan, because most of the stylists there are experts in making Asian hair look fantabulous. They always have the newest technology and machines for crazy perms that I've never heard of, and the best shampoo / head massage that I have never been able to experience in California. After I was seated, the stylist Jon offered me tea and a brief consultation in how I want my hair to be cut. They had personal TV with mandarin shows - which was pretty awesome, they made the whole environment seem almost exactly like the hair salons in Taiwan. The head massage/shampoo was okay, nothing too spectacular. Jon held small conversation with me while cutting my hair, we spoke mandarin mostly, but he seemed fluent in English also. i didn't really get to see the result of my haircut until the next day when I washed and restyled my hair. This is because when Jon finished giving me a haircut, he asked me if i wanted my hair to be styled. (for free! ) I have straight hair and I'm usually terrible when using a curling iron - so we decided that he could style my hair and curl it for me. He even offered to trim my bangs for free whenever. My hair looked great after the haircut, it was a little shorter than I had asked for, But I was mostly happy with it. However, a couple days later, I started seeing split ends and frizzy hair. I was shocked, because my hair is usually healthy and I rarely ever dye or perm it. ( the last time I had my hair dyed / permed prior to this haircut was 3 years ago). I thought about going back to complain, but I'm still not entirely sure how my hair was damaged from a hair cut. Maybe it was because after the haircut, Jon blow-dried my hair, straightened it, and then proceeded to curl the ends with a bunch of hair spray and other styling products? I have no idea. I'm still not entirely sure if this is actually their fault - so this isn't going to affect my star rating for them. However, this has never happened to me when I had my hair styled at any other salons, and it took my hair months to recover after the haircut. I might give them a try again in the future - but probably not anytime soon. Overall - I love the environment - definitely reminds me of Taiwan. Shampoo / head massage was decent. Customer Service was pretty good. (Since I speak fluent Mandarin) The actual haircut was good, but the style only lasted about a month and a half. Agreed with most of you. Those two guys were laughing way too much and surprisingly find out that Jon can speak English??? While George did my hair, there was a lady translated for Jon. He can't speak any English at all. Of course, it's not a big deal but it would be good if you want to serve more customers. So George is the owner? that's what I thought but he said he's not so couldn't give me any discount. I was surprised to hear that. Actually the first time I heard that a designer can't give customer any discount. So, is he lying? or probably they don't have many customers so they can't give any discount. I read all the comments before I went. Just decided to try it out. I went there to have my hair perm. The result was good when I was there. However, after I came home, the inside hair look straight already! George said they would call to ask if there is anything I don't like but so far I am still waiting for their phone call. After I read all your comments, I don't know if I should ask a redo... Despite all that, the place is clean. But I won't trade my hair with a Georgesan Hair Salon again just because it has personal TV, green tea, or clean. read more

I have been going to George to get my hair cut and colored for years. I love that they are by appointment only because 1) no wait time and 2) you really get 100% of the stylist's attention rather than having the stylist going back and forth between customers like some of the other places I've been to. George always does a great job and keeps fun conversation flowing with his dry sense of humor. If you get your hair treatments done regularly you'll know that's important because you can sit there for many hours at a time. One caveat though- you'll probably feel more comfortable here if you speak Mandarin as George is not super fluent in English. Overall highly recommended! read more

i had tried 2 asian female stylists around the cupertino area, but I am only appreciate Geogesen Hair. The stylist, George, cut my hair with the special cutting I wanted, which the 2 former stylists couldn't make it. The texture and layers of my hair are really awesome!! I feel like finally I can have something I can enjoy with my hair just as back in Taipei. Honstly, my 2 former stylists just can cut my hair shorter. They didn't have the ability to create the texture and layers what I want. However, I feel bothered that he tried to make sale of hair products while doing my hair, and he has nothing good to say about my hair expect repeating "oh! your hair is so damage!! You need someing to do with it!" Well, either he is too honest or tried to make sale. I really don't know. Language problem and cultural shock may occur when visiting the store in that the former is the stylist has limited English; the later is sometimes you might have "surprise" while doing too much conversation. I saw the great reviews on yelp and also heard one other girl talk about this place so I went there with high hopes. Unfortunately the best thing about this place was the tea and the shampoo massage. The Hair cut I wanted was very basic a trim and to reshape, I even told the guy that I'm trying to grow my hair out. I guess he didn't hear me or perhaps it was that he doesn't understand English. Anyways the cut I got was supper short, I absolutely hate it. This was by far the worst cut I've ever had and it cost way too much. Next time I think I'll take my chances at supper cuts. read more

I cried twice after George hair cut. I hated it. It's a pretty strange beginning for 5 stars review. Isn't it? What usually make woman looking old? OLD image, she used to 5-10-15-20 years ago. I am in my middle 40 and as all of us, I used to my personal image. George's cut helps me to have "current" image, which is not always what I expected. After few days with new hair cut, I am always happy. Everyone around is sure I have 3-times-more-expensive hairdresser. So, treat yourself. I don't speak Chinese or Japanese, Even so, George's English doesn't bother me. I am coming for his expertise as a hairdresser. And he is very good at this. I am with George from the first month they opened this salon and, I hope, I would stay with them in future (prices doubled). Environment is very modern, not crowded. OMG - Don't go to this place, they will ruin your hair and repeatedly tell you that your hair is damaged. You will walk-out with more damage than before you walked in with. This place is not worth the money nor do I feel they are professional hair dressers. I am reporting them to the "Better Business Bureau " on Monday. My bad experience at this place is as follows. I walked in to Georgesen Hair Design because I had seen this place next door to the Ginger Cafe. Which I must add, I'm a frequent visitor of places I have good experiences with. I thought the salon might be a fairly reasonably priced salon. It's not a Stanford Mall or a Valley Fair prime location, if you know what I mean. It's not like they have high rents to make up for their high prices!! Anyhow, I walked in and asked the girl behind the reception desk, how much it would cost to get my roots done? I was due for a touch-up and possibly some highlights while I was there, if their prices were reasonable - (not). They cleverly avoided my question on pricing, and proceeded to tell me that my hair was SOOO DAMAGED! (after reading a few of the other reviews and experiences at this place, this seems to be a very common comment from Mr. George to his clients.) Doesn't he have the decency or smarts to know that customers do not want to hear how damaged their hair is, and repeatedly!?! What an idiot this guy is, seriously. Secondly, his assistant who is supposed to translate, doesn't always have time to translate everything. Therefore, you have a loss-in-translation between client, (stylist which is the owner) and his translator. To make a long story short, they didn't get the color right at my roots, after the wash and blow-dry, my hair looked almost exactly as when I walked in, if not worse because the colors didn't match, nor did my gray roots get covered properly. I clearly showed them that I was not happy, and was very close to walking out without paying a cent, which I now regret and should have done! George then told his assistant to leave and work on someone else, while he FIXED or REPAIRED the damage that had been done. He chose a reddish-brown color that didn't even blend with the bottom color of my hair, which is more golden ash brown with absolutely zero hints of red that he chose to use. I was even more pissed after sitting there for 3 1/2 hours wishing I had not chosen this place to begin with. What a regret, and big mistake! This is exactly how I felt while sitting there watching what they were doing to my hair and after walking out extremely disappointed and mad, that places like this exist! They should be shut down. Lastly, to top it all off. I got stuck with a $120.00 bill for something that I was clearly not happy with and I made sure I let him know I was not interested in returning nor was I a satisfied customer. My face was an open book of utterly disappointment. OMG - my hair dresser at Stanford charges me this price for highlights, color, and cut, honestly. I will NEVER STEP FOOT IN THIS PLACE AGAIN. I warn you....do not go to this place if you want to get results you are happy with. George and his assistant do not seem like professional hair dressers/stylists to me. I am not even sure he has the credentials others have expressed about him. Sorry George, but I don't even think you have a good sense of style or professionalism about you. This place SUCKS big time.
