This is a cute, busy local cafe that has homey sandwiches and a friendly feel. It's obvious that a lot of the customers are local and frequent here, as the ladies behind the counter know them by name and order. Parking is street, but it wasn't too busy when I stopped by around 9am on a weekday. The inside was bustling though, and there were two ladies bustling behind the counter. One of them seemed a little impatient as there were quite a few customers, which was understand but a tiny bit off-putting since this was my first time here. The ingredients were fresh and generous, but I felt that the pesto was so generous that it overpowered all the other ingredients and made the sandwich a little out of balance. Oh, how I love Gepetto's! I've stopped by occasionally over the years, and yesterday was another craving for.....the Best tuna salad sandwich ever! Sounds mundane, but let me tell you, that is one mighty delicious sammy. I ordered it on their whole wheat-sunflower seed bread which is magic by itself. This café was recommended from a co-worker in the area, I was very excited to sample the food. The customer service was awesome-staff was pleasant and attentive. However, I was extremely disappointed by the quality and presentation of the food. I ordered the open face tuna melt and the half/tuna sandwich. Figuring the staff advised that it took longer to prepare the tuna melt; my expectations were to be pleased with a beautiful tasty tuna melt-wrong. The 'melt' was a sad piece of bread with a lump of dry tuna placed on top with a slice of cheddar melted on it. The tuna was dry and not much flavor. So t have it also on a sandwich was 2 strikes, bad idea. Maybe I am out of touch with what a GOOD tuna melt is, but I know this should not be ok (see pics). The sandwich had NO condiments (i can live with that), but it was so dry, the entire lump fell out the sandwich when I lifted it to eat-super disappointing. I was embarrassed that this was the quality/presentation for a cute lil café in Orinda. And for the money paid $10.95/$6.95; this was a rip off. This was my first time at Geppetto's Cafe. I am very happy I came in! The BLTA was delicious! I also had a garden salad with a poppy seed dressing which was amazing and fresh. I enjoyed lunch out on the patio with my daughter. You can choose where to dine inside or out. The staff was very kind and answered my questions. I'm not sure if the lady was an owner but she was very sweet and walked around and asked her customers how they were and if they enjoyed there food. We will be back! A small cafe with outdoor seating. It's a popular local restaurant that's worth the visit if you're in the area. Their sandwiches are made fresh and you can definitely taste the difference. I picked up the "Chicken, Brie and pesto". It tasted better than anything Mr. Pickles or Ike's place could whip up. The customer service here was great as well! A solid little cafe removed from downtown Orinda serving up basic sandwiches, ice cream, pastries and coffee. I ordered an iced tea and a chocolate chip cookie and both were fine; nothing amazing or artisanal, but ok. The cookie wasn't the rich, doughy, satisfying kind, one wants when eating a cookie, it was more cakey and hard. A ton of free parking, free wifi and lots of open seating both indoors and out. I do have to say we were there close to closing time and they started cleaning up before they actually closed - which consisted of them mopping up the floors with bleach. Had a rough visit for breakfast today. The young lady who started to take our order today was sweet, personable and welcoming (5 stars for her). Then the owner harshly and dismissively bumped her from the process and things went downhill. Guessing it was the owner, anyway. From that point on I wasn't feeling it. There were only two hot breakfast choices. I ordered the sandwich with eggs, bacon, onion and mushroom on ciabatta. It was flavorless. My daughter's sandwich suffered the same fate. The line was just about to the door when I arrived at 12:30 on a Tuesday, line went by pretty quickly and the waitress who took my order at the counter seemed very good at her job. The restaurant serve coffee and ice cream as well. There are several dog-friendly seats in the outdoor patio. They provide a dog bowl and sometimes have dog treats inside at the coffee bar. I started going to Gepetto's in the early 1990s when I was a student at JFKU. I loved this place - the espresso was excellent, the food was delish and the outdoor patio was lovely. I've been there a few times over the years, the last being about 10 years ago. Fast forward another 15 years: I was so happy to be going back to my old "haunt". Met a friend there who also knew it from the '90s. Both of us were appalled at what we got. The espresso was like nothing I've ever been served before, and even her coffee was sub-par. What a disappointment after having loved this place for so many years. I don't know when the owners changed, but there is ZERO chance I would ever go there again. My boss ordered a hot pastrami sandwich, and by the looks of the bag the sandwich looks like it is small enough for a toddler. For $9.25 where is the chips and drinks?? Or is that extra??
