Had a long car trip and workout moving and didn't want to go out for dinner so we ordered in. Was happy they were open and delivered on Memorial Day. We were told an hour for food and almost an hour later it arrived. The food was good, nothing tasted like it came from a can. We got a cream and tomato sauce so we could try both. They were both very good, the tomato sauce had a bit of spice and smokiness to it that made it unique, neither pasta was drowning in sauce which was a plus. Overall we will either order delivery again, or if we feel up to going out, try the actual restaurant as it's not far away. read more

Let me start this off by saying that as an Italian from New York City I know good Italian, and have yet to find a place in Salem that I can be proud of. One of my friends said i should try this place as they enjoyed themselves there. The service was great! There, I have told you everything positive I can about this place. Went there with entire family and each ordered something different. First and most important. An Italian restaurant should know how to cook pasta. All dishes came with overcooked squishy pasta. Embarrassing! I had a choice of soup or salad. I decided to try the tortellini soup. it sounded interesting. What I got was a bowl of tortellini in water ( probably the water it was boiled in) with some garlic flavoring.... OMG was like prison food... you kidding me? The linguine and clam sauce was acceptable according to my father, but once again pasta cooked to mush. Veal parm..... Processed veal tasting mess. I could of bought a tv dinner that was more impressive. This place is just going thru the motions. Fettuccine Alfredo.. I swear the sauce came out of a jar. I wanted to like this place so much, but just another Italian restaurant that thinks sauce and mozzarella equal good Italian food. Probably worst dining experience I have had food quality wise EVER. Have had their Chicago Style Pizza delivered a few times, being from Chicago I can say that this is pretty close to the real thing. Good sauce, sausage is flavorful, lots of cheese, only suggestion would be to use more corn meal in the crust to make it crunchier, but still enjoyable the way it is. read more

We were really excited to try this place after hearing so many good reviews. Unfortunately, we ordered through Grubhub and when we came to pickup our order they acted like we didn't pay. Pretty embarrassing situation and I wonder who we paid as I had my receipt for the transaction with me. 5 stars for the Chicago style thin. Being Chicago born and raised I'm always on the lookout for pizza like back home. This is very authentic to Chicago style. The sauce is spot on and the sausage is very good. The crust could have been a tad crispier but I've only been there once so far so I can't really criticize. When we first moved to Salem, we didn't know much about the town. My husband was looking for a nice place to take me out one night, so he read some reviews and found this place. I thought he was kidding when we drove up to the place. It's got a little door on a big storefront, and it seems like there's nothing there. But you open the door, and the atmosphere draws you in. Having a food allergy means having to read labels of everything I plan to eat, and dining out can be a challenge. Their staff is always so accommodating, and careful to make sure I don't get exposed to something I shouldn't. If you want authentic Italian food, this is the way to go. I like to pop by and get one of their calzones for lunch often, because it's affordable and hits the spot. read more

omg!!! worked here for years then moved to Central Or. kids grew up on Geppetto's Pizza. I have celiac and had to go gluten free. GF pizza is a tough one. I have had some goods ones, but this pizza OMG!!! Took grandson to college and his dad who grew up on this pizza wanted some before flying back to Chicago. I was excited when they said they had Gluten Free. I never expected it to be as good as it is!!! If people are not eating at Geppettos they are truly missing out! Very nice server and the environment is probably what I envision might be in a neighborhood someplace in one of the New York Burroughs as a blend of a pizza shop and restaurant. Reading the range of reviews doesn't help me ground my experiment. I ordered the linguine alfredo and manicotti with a salad. The tomato sauce was just that--a tomato sauce without a hint of herb. I expected something like oregano, garlic, basil, or even a bit of fennel. It wasn't bad, it just wasn't much. None of the food was bad, it was just ok. Overall, I think if I had a family with kids, I would be fine coming here for dinner. But if I wanted to take my wife out for Italian, thus probably would not be my first choice. The server was very nice but I had to ask for a pasta spoon. They could add some touches to improve such as freshly shred Parmesan rather than the powder in a jar or freshly ground pepper for the salad, or some flavor to the sauce. read more

Disappointing. We decided to try Geppetto's for the first time tonight, and I wish we didn't. We ordered for pick-up. The food was subpar to say the least. Never in my life have I had bland Chicken Marsala, didn't know it was even possible until tonight. Absolutely flavorless. The side salad was a joke. Disgusting dressing, iceberg lettuce, covered in shredded carrots, and 1 cucumber slice. On top of all of this, they forgot our order of Calamari. My husband went back to pick it up hoping it would be good. Nope. Tastes like fish sticks. What a joke. We will never go back to this establishment. Came here after reading all the reviews. We were not disappointed. My wife had the chicken marsala with spaghetti and meat sauce I had the combination lasagna and raviolis with meat sauce. We each had some soup I had the minestrone she had the tortellini noodle. We enjoyed some of the house Chianti. We were very satisfied. If we were here again we would come back. Reserved for 25 people on a Saturday at 6pm. When we arrived they separated our group into 1 long table that seats 12, 1 medium table on the other side of room that seats 8, and a booth that seats 6. It's a birthday party and our group wasn't even sitting together. They had 3 days notice. The Birthday girl was not happy. They should have put us next to each other not separated across the room. Very nice place to go for solid Italian food. We went to Geppetto's on Mothers Day - we were very pleasantly surprised by our entire experience. The place had recently been reopened due to some smoke damage, and the interior was very nice, clean and open - it does not look like that from the front, but the inside is quite nice. The food is very solid old school Italian - not like a lot of Italian places in Portland with newer fancy types of past and sauces - just very good food. The lasagna had a nice balance of meat, cheese and pasta - just right in my opinion. My son had a custom thin crust pizza, which he declared the best in Salem! Conveniently located in a ran down strip mall where you can easily buy cat food and office supplies while you wait for a table, Geppetto's has an item for even the most unsophisticated of palates. But first warm up your appetite by digging into the staple of all fine Italian eateries, the bottomless breadsticks. Are they warm, soft, and smothered in savory garlic butter? Or are they crusty, rustic Italian bread with olive oil and a splash balsamic vinegar with fresh ground pepper? Nope! Geppetto's version of "breadsticks" is a small cup filled with hard stick pretzels, like the kind you get in the convenience store snack aisle next to the potato chips. The plastic plates are a perfect match for the depressing atmosphere. Geppetto's must have gotten quite a steal from the Del Griffith-esque hospital cafeteria dinnerware salesman. I go out for dinner to eat food I know I couldn't make myself. The fettuccine alfredo I ordered was pedestrian and uninspired, something even I could put together and I've been known to overcook water. But, but, but.. Don't fret! Let me start by saying all their food is absolutely delicious. My go to is the Stromboli, size for your money is great and the fillings are always in perfect proportion to the breading. With that being said I am one of the PICKIEST people when it comes to desserts. I've worked as a baker professionally for years and let me tell you geppetto's is not only great for their main dishes but for their desserts as well. The tiramisu is light but packed with flavor. It's so easy to overpower a dresser with espresso but they hit the nail on the head when it comes to balance of flavors and textures. Last but not least before covid we would go to dine in. We were always welcomed by staff with smiles. Service was fast and friendly without compromising quality. To them you're not just another customer, they treat you like family when you go in. Now with covid and staff is still extremely friendly and doing everything to keep their customers safe. :) read more

My plan was to research recipes/techniques and try my own hand this weekend. To prep, I invited a friend to lunch here to try theirs. Knowing they took a long time to cook, I called in early and placed the order for us to eat in. Small deep dish with pepperoni, mushroom, sausage. Good old faithful. We arrived, and were quickly seated, and had fast and friendly service with a smile from a gentleman, as did the other four or so tables who were near us. Same old decor. It's like walking into a time warp. Our deep dish came, and it was beautiful. Good balance of crust, sauce, and goodies. The sauce really was perfect -- well spiced, rich tomato flavor, not too salty. It was literally mouth watering as we prepared to dig in. The crust was firm on the outside with a bit of a crisp, soft and buttery tasting on the inside. Service was attentive, and we wanted for nothing. Except, you know, maybe a little decor update. (But it's become a joke. We wagered on the chances it had been updated, as it had been about four years since we'd last been there. We felt there was a 0.05 percent change of update. It played out.) But... this deep dish was so good that I cancelled my plans to bother making one myself. We're just ordering one from them tonight. It was odd to find they don't open until 4pm on Saturday, although they ARE open for lunch during the week. Good to know. read more

Then, a year or so ago, things started to go downhill--the food started getting worse, the service started getting slower and ruder. Not sure what happened--new owners maybe?--but after months of steady decline I can finally say we're done. Geppetto's is really almost two different restaurants in one place. First, there is their pizza, available thin crust, thick crust, and (our favorite) Chicago-style stuffed. Toppings/stuffings range from the traditional to gourmet-ish. We have been eating their stuffed pizzas since we lived in Salem in the late 1980s. When we lived in Portland, we would often stop at Geppetto's if we were northbound on I-5 from Eugene and bring a stuffed pizza home. (The closest thing we could find in Portland then was Deniccola's in SE Portland.) Yes, the stuffed pizza is that good (I dunno about the other crust styles--the stuffed is so good and unique in the area that we have never ordered the others). And they deliver. Allow 45-minutes to an hour for a stuffed pizza, as they take longer to bake. One or two pieces will feed most hungry people--three for a hungry teenager or someone with a black hole for a stomach. Second, they also serve some pretty tasty homestyle Italian food in a kinda cheesy 1950s Italian-American red-and-white-checked tablecloth atmosphere. Their pasta dishes are always tasty--not gourmet, but always good. The service has always been good--sometimes really good. If you want to make your server's day, go there for a leisurely meal. Order an appetizer, some house red wine, a salad, maybe some soup, and an entree. The waitstaff (aside from the fact that they get a bigger tip) really seems to appreciate it when their guests really enjoy their meal. And don't forget to save room for some frozen tortoni for dessert! I don't know of any other place in Salem that offers this treat. The place doesn't look like much from the outside, as it is in a strip mall and has no windows--just a sign and a door. Good stuff, though--good for families or couples looking for something better than Olive Garden that won't break the bank or require you to speak Italian. read more

I was surprised to read that most of the reviews for Gepetto's were for their pizza. I've eaten here for several (more than 10) years now, and I have to say that I've never ordered their pizza. Sorry, but when the ravioli is handmade by grandma it's hard for me to be tempted by pizza. Oh, and she makes the desserts, too! I love that the decor is the same that I remember from my childhood, that the waitstaff seem to all be related to the cooks, and that the menu remains unchanged. When it comes to Italian, I tend to care only about the noodles and the sauce and I can vouch for the quality and taste of both of those in this restaurant. Dinners are served with your choice of house salad or tortellini soup--and I love them both. The focaccia bread is tasty also, though you have to specially request vinegar and oil rather than butter. In short, it's a solid Italian restaurant. I've no idea why the OG on Lancaster and Market always has a line out the door, when you can walk right in to Gepetto's... read more

After incessant hounding from my brother, the need for a new lunch, and Chuck B.'s reveiw, I finally gave this place a try today. From work I scoured the online menu and decided on two large deep dish cheese pizzas, one small deep dish cheese, and a stuffed combo pizza (hey--we were feeding a small army!) The guy who answered the phone (we did take out) was super friendly and let me pick three cheeses for my cheese pizzas. We chose bleu, feta, and mozzarella. Yum! The only downside to this was that he charged me extra, which was ok I guess but since I was allowed three toppings with my large anyway I thought it was odd. The nice man let me pay over the phone with my card (someone else was picking up) and even called me back at work to let me know what the total would be. It was $93.50. Wow. An hour later and the pies appear. The first thought was Whoah--HEAVY pizza boxes. If only I had known how huge these would be I wouldn't have gotten three larges! The deep dish pies weren't as deep as I thought they'd be, but that was just fine with me 'cuz I'm a thin crust girl. Geppettos lays down the cheese and then the sauce on their pies, and I felt that this was a numm-nummy way to serve (and eat) the pizza. The crust is dense and it's definately not a meal in itself (unless you're that kind of person). I was in desperate need of a salad after two slices! The flavor was delightful but a little overpowering--hence the need for a salad to accompany the meal. The stuffed is a pizza I am definately not a fan of, but I tried a slice anyway. With this version all the toppings are stuffed on the inside and the sauce is spread over the top crust. It was ok, but I got it for my brother and he loved it so I would chalk it up to preference. I will eat here again but will NOT order so many pizzas. When they say that a large will feed 4-6, they don't mean it the same way that Dominos does. read more

I ordered dinner to be delivered to the Hampton Inn where I was staying on business. The Chicken Masala came piping hot and smothered in garlicky mushrooms that were simply delicious! It also included pasta and a salad on the side which we both equally yummy! I was very surprised at how fast it came too...they said to allow an hour and it was there in 30 minutes. The delivery person even came to my door and was very professional and of course wearing a mask. Last but not least I said I was in the mood for a little chocolatey treat and they suggest a cup of chocolate mousse which did not disappoint! I really wanted to like this place but was really disappointed. My husband had the veal Marsala and I had veal parmigiana. It was the nightly special. The veal was so tough you could barely cut it and had no flavor. The side of marinara and fettuccine was also pretty tasteless. The best part of dinner was the chocolate cake we shared for dessert. An old-school establishment with an old-school hesitance when it comes to seasonings. I got the Spaghetti alla Trapanese, while my mom ordered the Ma's Ravioli. Mom didn't mind the Ma's as much as I did. For supposedly-homemade ravioli, the pasta and sauce tasted uncannily like Chef Boyardee. My entree wasn't bad, but it certainly wasn't what I expected. The menu had indicated that the vegetables had been tossed in pesto, which coulda fooled me - you could see a few herby specks here and there, but the basil flavor was nearly impossible to detect. I probably wouldn't have gulped down the tortellini soup that came with my order so eagerly if my germy sinuses hadn't needed a little flush. No veggies, no spices, no herbs - just broth, tortellini, and a little too much sodium. Speaking of old-school, Geppetto's probably has the last wine list in town that features Riunite on ice. The bread: so, so bad. More like Irish soda bread, or drop-biscuits even, or hard tack. The marinara sauce: tasted like enchilada sauce. The house "creamy garlic" dressing was obviously mayonnaise. But: the meat sauce tasted real to me. I usually don't order "meat sauce" anywhere because in my experience that tends to mean hamburger browned and then stirred into tomato paste. This tasted like the meat was cooked all night in the sauce (the traditional way). I could see why their "marinara" was so bad: it was just the meat sauce without the meat. But the meat is the main thing that gives "sunday gravy" its flavor. That's what their meat sauce is: sunday gravy, and it is pretty dang decent. If you take the meat out of sunday gravy however, you have to add a ton of spices to make up for it. I think they just don't know any better. Also the ravioli are homemade and very good. Order something with the meat sauce and you won't be disappointed. Very dated decor, but who cares? Awkward layout - I agree with a previous Yelper that I felt stared-down by the kitchen staff as I came in. But who cares? And the service was adequate, if a little inexperienced. Honestly someone should go through their entire menu and highlight the stuff that is obviously made following the recipe of someone's grandmother (delicious) and also marking the misguided attempts to update the menu for a broader palate (yuck). There are really some gems here but if you happen to order spaghetti with marinara sauce the first time, you are going to come away thinking that this place is nasty nasty. read more
