My car was making sounds that concerned me so I took it into Ger-Brock. As a woman, I don't know much about cars and they really helped me through the entire process with such professionalism, knowledge and great customer service. They let me know that they'd check test drive the car to get an analysis and let me know they'd call me with the diagnostic and wouldn't work on the car until I agreed. They let me know a few hours later and ran me through the cost and what was going on. The price was very fair and Brandon was compassionate and helpful. The technician that worked on my vehicle did a great job and I wish I had grabbed his name to mention him on here. I've been using Ger-Brock as my primary mechanics since moving to Portland, I had heard great remarks about them from various family and friends. Earlier this month I brought my Subaru in for a pre-trip check as I had a ten-day road trip planned shortly thereafter. There was an issue that came up, one of the bolts for my engine broke off causing major concern; possibly needing a new transmission. Ger-Brock was amazing to work with in this scary and stressful situation. Originally thinking the problem was because of their handling, they were upfront and was going to pay for causing the damages. Upon further review and consultation, it was apparent the issue was created when I had my car serviced elsewhere. Since the issue wasn't Ger-Brock's fault, they worked with me on finding the best solution to get my car back and on the road. I am relieved this happened with them and not at another automotive shop as I don't believe another place would have been as open, up-front, and willing to admit fault and take ownership of actions. To sum it up: Ger-Brock and the mechanics are amazing people and Brandon was incredibly helpful and reassuring the whole time. In Nov 23 I brought my car 2012 Nissan to gerbrock to change a rear directional signal bulb. A couple of months later I started noticing that rain was filling up the rear light box where they had changed the bulb. A couple of months later I called them and told them what happened they refused to believe it was their fault. and told me they'd charge us to fix it. I was po and just let it be.Then a few months later when the bulb stopped working because of it being filled with water all the time when it rains, we called them and told them the light was no longer working they again refused to believe it was their fault. Now we have to pay $500 to get it fixed by the dealer. Gerbrock USED to be a good garage before the current ownerhey're only a few block s away but we stopped going to them several years ago after the whole wheel fell off the car after having new brakes put on. I've been coming here for 10 years and always had a good experience, but when I brought my car in yesterday for an oil change I had a bad enough time that I won't be returning. When they do an oil change they used to check everything, like the tires, battery, headlights, etc to make sure everything is functioning properly. They obviously didn't even check my burnt out headlight and my oxidized battery. I had to point this out to them, so they fixed the headlight while I was waiting. While I was waiting, I also encountered a very grumpy and rude mechanic who was glaring at me for some reason? ok... really? When I got home, I realized they didn't even fix the bulb. Makes sense because they didn't put my car up on the lift (which is how you change the bulb on a subaru). But they charged me for the bulb. what?? So I called the next day to have them fix the bulb that they didn't even fix and they said to stop by, it will only take a few minutes. So when my partner dropped the car off they were giving her a hard time, saying they didn't have time to fix the bulb and being extremely rude to her. But you charged me for this bulb and you didn't even fix it, not to mention all the other things you missed, like the battery which I will have to take somewhere else to replace. Dunno what's going on here, but I can't believe how terrible I was treated after being a customer here for so long. Definitely avoid these people! They don't care about your car, only your money. read more

My family has been using Ger-Brock for around 20 years with 4 vehicles and have had a stellar experience throughout. They are knowledgeable, reasonably priced and most of all trustworthy. I usually take my car to the dealer for oil changes and then if they recommend any repairs or service I take it to Ger-Brock for a second opinion. Every single time the service is less expensive at Ger-Brock and most of the time the work the dealer recommended isn't even necessary. Recently, the dealer missed a huge rats nest in my glove box air filter. Get-Brock found it within minutes and did a wonderful job cleaning and fixing it. They are great at communicating and everyone from the owner, manager and mechanics are fantastic. I highly recommend. You can trust Ger-Brock for an honest opinion and solid work. read more

From the very first time I walked in to their office they were super polite and helpful. Woke up one morning to my car refusing to start. Called around to a few places, and decided on Ger Brock - which was a GREAT decision. The soonest they could get me scheduled was about a week out. My appointment was on a Friday, but I had my car towed there on Monday. Got a call the next day letting me know they had time to take a look at my car. They diagnosed the issue, made the repair, and ensured everything was running smoothly. Luckily for me it wasn't a major issue and I had my car back by Thursday (day before my scheduled appointment). Customer service was exceptional. They were extremely friendly and informative. Pricing was more than fair. I know next to nothing about cars, and I really appreciate the time they took to explain what was going on. In summary, 10/10 would recommend. Trustworthy mechanics that are super nice. I brought my 2008 Nissan Exterra in after hearing some roaring noises under the hood. The first surprise was that they were able to see me 2 days ahead of my scheduled appointment! They give the option for you to drop your car off early in a locked, secured lot - a huge plus for me. And after that, they were able to determine that some connections weren't secure after a previous (non Ger-Brock) mechanic worked on the engine. They also replaced a battery after noticing corrosion, completed a very overdue oil change and did it all in less time (and for less money) than I expected. After going to a dealership for a recalled part, I was told that my car had a bunch of issues and it would cost a ton of money to fix. After reading reviews online I decided to get a second opinion from Ger Brock. The man on the phone was so nice and helpful and I felt listened to. I wanted to see if my car was even worth fixing since the dealership made it seem like everything was wrong and their diagnosis was very prompt and super honest. Thankfully my car had way less wrong with it than was originally said to me by the dealership, and the cost to fix it was less than half of what I thought it was going to be. I'm hesitant to write this review because having a trustworthy mechanic is so valuable! I don't want the word to get out! However, Brandon and his team having been taking care of my Toyota 4Runner with +200k miles for a couple years now and they never disappoint. They always are upfront about fixes, what is necessary and what is not and almost always offer options in terms of cheaper options to complete the fix (like finding used parts versus new parts). I rarely take them up on the cheaper routes but think it is great they present multiple options to customers. My only suggestion is that it usually takes a few days to get an appointment so perhaps they could hire an extra mechanic or two for their shop. I started coming to this shop after a few weird experiences at another shop that I thought I trusted. After a few years of great service from the other shop, there were suddenly two experience in a row where I was given a diagnosis that didn't seem to fit with the details of the problems I had been describing to them, and I didn't feel as though they were listening to me. Brought my car to Ger-Brock for a second opinion, and learned that both problems had much simpler fixes than previously recommended. Phew! Have continued bringing my aging car into Ger-Brock for the past few years, and they've kept in running and on the road for me. They've also been great in helping me triage which repairs are more pertinent, knowing that my goal had been to buy a new car within the next couple years. As a first impression, I've always been super impressed with how clean and organized the shop seems to be. They are always great about calling me to go over diagnosis/cost/options when problems arise, and I so appreciate the thorough write-up they send home with me detailing everything that was discussed. Ger-brock was recommended to us by our veterinarian, and I'm so glad we found a mechanic I feel we can trust. Before Ger-brock: We moved to Portland a year ago, before which I had been loyal to the same conscientious mechanic for over 15 years. When we first moved here, I took our 2012 Toyota PriusV to the local Toyota dealership for oil change and 60k service because we didn't know of a reliable & trustworthy mechanic. (The Toyota dealership service was what as expected- pricey and some specific services were unnecessary, but "recommended". They didn't even wash or vacuum my car, which most dealerships I've been to do, because they charge so much more than smaller shops... hmmmph). After Ger-brock: This time, I decided to look for a good family mechanic when our passenger windshield wiper stopped working after the first snow/ice wave. I researched all the best reviewed mechanics in the Portland area, and ultimately went with Ger-brock because of the personal recommendation. And it was within 30-40 minute walking distance from my house. My overall experience with them was 5-star worthy, and I feel confident bringing our car to them for any future service. I called on a Monday, and made an appointment for that Friday (they seem like a smaller operation, but steadily busy which is a good sign to me). I'll happily wait a few days for more reliable service. If it had been an emergency, they said they could try to fit me in, but I would have to leave the car all day, which I couldn't do because of work. I explained what was wrong with the wiper, and asked for possible estimate, which they couldn't do because the cause could have been any number of things they couldn't diagnose over the phone. I guess I understand- if I didn't know anything about cars and explained the problem too vaguely, it's better not to set the wrong expectation. Anyway, long story short, I dropped my car off at appointed time and started walking home. They called about an hour later and said it was just a loose nut on wiper mechanism, was all fixed and ready to go. I went in and they didn't charge me a thing, not even for the mechanic's time. Total cost=$0. Just about an hour of waiting. Some places quoted me anywhere from a few dollars to several hundred dollars, depending on whether it was the wiper fuse or motor! They definitely did not try to take advantage of my complete lack of knowledge of my PriusV, and I appreciate it. This is based off my one first experience with them, but I have the feeling they just want to do good by their community and build loyal clientele. If anything changes in future experiences, of course I will update my review. But they stand at 5-stars as of now! read more

I thought I would marinate for a week or so to see how my car has been running since taking it to Ger-Brock. So far, she's running as she did before the issues arose. On my way home from work about 2.5 weeks ago my car started to shut down on me in the middle of getting onto I-84. Lugging, hesitating, jerking, BAM! She was toast. I called my mechanic down in Eugene who is one of the few HONEST mechanics I know. He had a friend recommend Ger-Brock. I had my car towed there and they had about a 2 day delay getting to it due to having other card ahead of mine. That's a good sign to see them looking so busy. I spoke with Shawn when I dropped my car off. The ONLY thing that chapped my ass was I clearly said, "Please call me before you start working on my car and let me know what is wrong, and what the charges are so I can make sure that I can pay you for it." That wasn't the case. I got a call about 3 days later saying my car was fixed and ready to go and it would cost $275. Sure, I was expecting a much higher bill, thank goodness it wasn't, I was able to pay. BUT if this would've been a $600+ charge for services, I wouldn't have been able to throw down the chips for it right off the bat. They were some what unclear as what the real issue was. It was generalized as "ignition issues". They said, "Basically you needed a tune up and an oil change." This sounded a little off to me, not knowing EXACTLY what caused the problem....other than "ignition issues". My car is up and running as it was before, the work is gauranteed, and really I am very happy that it's running. The cost was reasonable, and Shawn and Don were both really nice and helpful. Since I dont know of many other places that offer honest service at a decent price, I will be using Ger-Brock for auto repairs while living in Portland. read more

The work they did was good, and I assume the pricing was fair (I don't know much about cars and thankfully haven't had many car troubles in my time). I do have a problem with their communication though. My check engine light came on, so I had brought it to an auto parts store to get the free diagnostic check. I called Ger Brock because they were relatively close to my home and had good reviews on here and other online review sites. When I spoke with them and told them what the diagnostics check had resulted in, they told me it would be "about an hour" to actually diagnose the problem, and depending on the problem (but based on what my diagnostics check resulted in) it would be fixed within a work day. I made an appointment to drop off my car one morning at 8am (when they open) and they said they'd give me a call. I assumed that when they said it would take about an hour to diagnose the problem, they would call me roughly an hour after I dropped off the car. Nope. After a couple of calls to them, I finally got a call back 4.5 hours later telling me what the problem was, and that they wouldn't get the part until the next day. I was kind of ticked, because if they had worked on my car first thing in the morning, I'm guessing they would have been able to get my part earlier and have the car fixed by the end of the work day. Because of all of this, I had to put out my friends, asking for rides to/from work, and when I finally got a solid time to come back to pick up my car, I had to wait another hour in the waiting area because it wasn't quite finished yet. If you have a lot of time and other resources to get to/from the places you need to be, I would recommend Ger-Brock. If you're fairly dependent on your car though, I might go elsewhere. read more

I've been living in Portland for over 10 years and wish I found this place way before this year. It is the first mechanic in my life where I felt confident I wasn't being taken for a ride. There's no gimmick and special attraction, just honest and timely service which is what you'd want from an automotive shop. For example, when I wanted to check my car before selling and reconnect my horn Jay's Garage had disconnected years ago due to alarm faulty issue and charged me almost $200, Ger-Brock only charged less than $30 to reconnect and make sure there were no issues before selling the car. read more

Top notch service, REASONABLE cost, no frills, they go the extra mile to identify and fix the problem. Example: 2006 Matrix driving us nuts with battery continuing to die. They troubleshot the electrical to find and remove a 3rd party GPS which had been removed but not disconnected from the battery which nevertheless continued to drain the battery. I've traded with them for more than a dozen years and have always been rewarded with results that worked, always at a great price. They don't do everything--no DEQ but certainly worth the call. I waited too long to schedule my car for an oil change and pre-trip inspection and when I did call a gent that said the next open time would be in 2+ weeks. Oh no! Dejected, I decided that I would just wing this moderate length road trip and hope for the best. After thinking on it for the day, I called back to see if I could just get an oil change and this time I talked to a very nice woman that took a few more minutes and referred me to a different shop that she knows and trusts that could probably get me in sooner! As a woman who is generally uncomfortable in male-centered environments, this garage is exceptional in every way. They do quality work, and are courteous, professional, diligent, and fair. $$$ - Expensive and they don't talk about it until they're done and ready to over charge you. 1. $88.00 for a breaks and fluids inspection without anything actually being repaired or serviced. 2. No verbal communication or paperwork about the services or costs until I declined the repair quote and was ready to pickup. I made an appointment over the phone with Brandon, 1 week out for a break check and to check the power steering (for a temporary squealing sound when I make my first turns out of the drive way, but only on cold mornings.). After about 2 hours, I get my first discussion about repairs and cost. -$250 for breaks fluid flush. -$200 for power steering fluid flush. -$200 for spark plugs replacement. I declined the repairs over the phone and walked back to pick up. When I arrived my car was still on the lift and no paperwork was ready. After they typed the assessment into the computer, I was finally given paperwork with a $88 assessment fee that was never discussed with them; not when I made the appt, or when I dropped it off, or over the phone after. Brandon just politely handed me a bill and offered a quote for new tires. I understand assessments aren't free and $88 seems high for what I wanted checked, but the part about not offering even a general quote before making me incur a service fee is BAD COMMUNICATION. read more
