Blueberry ginger was pretty good but didn't really leap out at me -- I've had better ginger ice cream and better fruit-flavored ice cream. The coffee ice cream -- my usual benchmark -- was also fine but not on par with my favorites in greater Boston (e.g. JP Licks). Also, when I went it seemed like they had some flavors for sale as pints but not behind the counter. Too bad, because I would have liked to try the strawberry basil. I heard about Tipping Cow after reading a recent article about new ice cream shops in the Boston area. Having just moved to Somerville, it was definitely on my list of places to try, and after hearing it was nut free, I decided to take my mom, who has a severe nut allergy and has only been able to make ice cream at home since being diagnosed. She had the espresso chip and loved it, and I had chocolate (and then cookie dough on a return trip). I've been twice since and loved it! Cheery employees, creamy, delicious ice cream. Ice cream is good but they're never open it seems, They could definitely give you more, the small is a hoodsie size cup and tonight they charged us 50 cents for covers to go, come on guys, next you'll be charging us for a spoon. Next time I'm getting in my car and driving somewhere that doesn't find a way to get 5 dollars for a thimble sized ice cream with a really fancy 50 cent cover. A nut free ice cream parlor with incredible homemade flavors? Priceless. There are not enough complementary adjectives in the English language to describe my love for Tipping Cow. My kid is allergic to the nuts found in every ice cream shop and this is the first ice cream place we can go out to. We drive from several towns away to give the kid the (in my opinion vital to childhood) experience of getting to look into an ice cream case, choose a flavor, and eat a gloriously dripping cone. The flavors are varied and scrumptious, ranging from simple vanilla and chocolate to blueberry ginger and cannoli. The space inside is small but there are a couple of stools by the window if you want to eat there. If you or someone you love has a nut allergy, or if you just love delicious small batch homemade ice cream, Tipping Cow is the place for you!!! read more

The ice cream seemed to me to be regular ice cream caliber sweet, so maybe the recipe was adjusted after some of the negative reviews. I am not reviewing the ice cream as I visited the shop in the morning when they opened at 8am. But they advertise coffee and tea so I was personally hoping for a neighborhood coffee shop with the bonus of an ice cream shop for the afternoon! There aren't many coffee places east of Cedar unless you head into Union Sq. To my dismay, they just have basic drip coffee and Stash tea bags. I look forward to trying their ice cream during a hot afternoon or evening, but if you're like me and hoping for a new coffee shop on the block, keep walking. read more

I visited this place on my way home from assembly row after reading the Yelp reviews. When I arrived I was greeted by two very friendly staff members. They happily let me try almost every one of their unique flavors including peach cobbler, blueberry cobbler, and mint chip brownie. They were all so delicious and very reasonably priced. On my way out I noticed the flavor "sweet corn" in the freezer and the girl at the front went back to get me a sample after I had already paid. Overall delicious ice cream, extremely friendly staff and cute store. Although it is a pretty far drive from home, I will most likely make the trip back and will not hesitate to recommend it to friends in the area. read more

We stopped at this new scoop shop last night for our dessert. So glad we did! I had the Key Lime Pie which was WONDERFUL and the Strawberry Shortcake YUMMY. Had lots of other small tastings as well.... The Buttermilk Vanilla was smooth and creamy.... Dark Chocolate Sea Salt is great and the Espresso Chip was yummy but would keep me awake all night so maybe another afteroon I'll do do that one. I picked up a couple of pints to bring home - Strawberry Basil was one. It should be interesting! Looking forward to my next visit. read more

I was psyched when I saw these guys on a small corner of Somerville--my phone had died and I was desperately looking for a good icecream place for my 5 year old niece. She got a cone with birthday cake icecream...auntie took a taste, yum. Little one dropped the icecream a few bites in and they had another one waiting for her (gratis). Sweet people running the place, they just opened 6 weeks ago. Only request is to use natural jimmies sans food coloring in their icecreams. As a self proclaimed ice cream connoisseur I was very excited to try out Tipping Cow after reading rave reviews online calling it a hidden gem within Somerville. My roommates and I decided to pay a visit Sunday night to give it a try. The staff was very welcoming and friendly and mentioned that the ice cream is made fresh every week and new flavors were installed once old batches ran out. There was a limited menu with 11 flavors to choose from and sizes ranging from mini to large with a very fair price to portion ratio (ordered a small for $3.25 two large scoops). We ordered the Espresso Chip, Ginger Blueberry, and Cookie dough. After finishing our ice cream 1 out of 3 of us were extremely impressed with the flavors. The Ginger and Blueberry was very overpowering and tasted as though you were eating the ginger on the side of the sushi plate. The Espresso Chip was very strong but since I am a coffee fanatic it ended up being a huge plus. Be forewarned if you do not like strong coffee you will not like this flavor. The one flavor that they did nail was the Cookie Dough, an absolute classic that we ordered with a melted brownie. Overall we were fairly impressed with our experience and would definitely be repeat customers when some unique flavors that make our taste buds tingle come onto the menu. read more
