I have no idea how this shop has anything above 1 star. I came to this shop when my Volkswagen's engine light came on. After paying for a diagnostic, Roberto said my manifold had to be replaced and that would solve the engine light dilemma. $800 and a new manifold later, my engine light comes on again after two days. I go back in and he tinkers with something to turn the light off. This happens one more time before I decide to stop coming to this establishment for service. To Roberto's credit, he didn't charge me anything else for turning my engine light off for 48 hours two additional times. The kicker is about a month ago when I take my car to another shop to actually solve the problem I've already thrown $800 at (to turn my engine light off so I can get my car smog checked for registration). I take it to another shop because this place obviously won't fix anything, and find out that Roberto's shop replaced my manifold using ZIP TIES to install the new manifold. Roberto's shop used zip ties to install a critical engine component experiencing high temperatures and under constant pressure/ vibration. If this is the type of dangerous service you want, by all means, waste your money to get your car serviced here. I kick myself every day for being scammed out of close to a thousand dollars. I waited 5 days after told me on Wednesday to come first thing on Monday and he would give a free estimate and fix car in abt 2 hrs.  he thought it was 2 hrs and just needed to see it.   Everyone else said 2-7 hrs. He removed the netting from my sunroof that's meant to catch bugs and debris, he ruined my seatbelts which I don't know why he even touched them, then tried to play stupid and say this is how they were, ruined my interior and now I have to pay more for his fuck ups, charged me way too much, I should've gone to VW themselves. read more

My regular mechanic was booked solid for the next two weeks, so I had to find another for a simple oil service. German Autosport was recommended on bimmerforums and is close by. The highly rated, positive reviews are all correct. Roberto is a nice guy. He may seem cold and indifferent at first, but once you start to talk to him about cars, he completely lights up. Very knowledgeable about vintage cars. Like other reviews mentioned, you don't get a nice waiting room, a ride, or free coffee, but you get an absolute solid mechanic who knows their stuff and gives you an excellent price. I was quoted about $100 for an oil change, while other shops were around $200. He also found some other small issues, and fixed them without cost. Major issues were recommend for later with an estimate. He even gave me a discount because he liked my car. read more

My headlights didn't work on my car so I brought it in, they kept the car for exactly 2 months, I never got a call from them, never got an update. Owner never answers the phone either I had to come in several times to hear from them. The 2nd day after I got my car back it wouldn't start and it left me stranded. I took it back and they kept it for an extra 4 days, they blamed it on the battery. They also took an OBD scanner out of my car, never got it back. Disappointed. read more

These guys are great. Straight up no bs and fair. I found the shop via yelp and decided to go in for an initial check engine light. The dealer quoted me $24k for replacing my gas tank. Turns out I just needed it tightened and it's common on these cars. I can't say enough great things. You do have to be flexible at times since he and another mechanic do the work. Roberto is great and literally my hero ! He has looked after my car for over a decade -- and it's the only reason i still have the same car. And that's an understatement. His problem solving skills are out of this world that are always looking at optimized best solution; it's like a director and producer in one. So he has the vision, and then his producer hats gets you the most cost effective solution. When I moved to SF, I took my car to two different mechanics and they bullshitted their way to no solutions when there was just one wire that was the issue; I ended up just calling Roberto and asking if I can ship my car back to him, and he discovered the issue and fixed it. We really wanted him to become our long lasting mechanic but how many times do things need to go wrong until you realize that you need to look for a new mechanic? Seriously, stay away. They use cheap parts, not the authentic German parts. They do a poor job, saying that's how it needs to be. We wasted way too much time and money here. Ok, so I wanted to be certain that this place was 5 stars before I reviewed it. For those of you that don't know me, I hate my VW bug. It is a headache on wheels. I have tried numerous mechanics in the LA area trying to get it fixed. Usually, I have a good idea of what is wrong with my car. Generally it is something easy to figure out, for example it is leaking coolant. Knowing what is wrong with your car really makes price comparisons easy. It gives you something to measure people's prices with. A few months ago, my car was indeed leaking coolant. I called German Independent where I had taken my car before. Sadly, Fred no longer worked there and the other guy quoted me a price that was rediculously high. So, I called a few places and came upon German Autosport. When I called, Roberto answered and quickly helped me and gave me a price. $150 LESS than German Independent. That is 30% lower for goodness sakes!!! I called a few other spots, and no one could beat their price. So, I brought it in. The repairs on my car were done the next day (I brought it in late in the day and figured it would be there overnight) and I felt good knowing that I had saved about $150. So today, as I ventured out in the wee hours of the morning, the darkness revealed that I had no headlights!!! NO HEADLIGHTS!!!! So, when I got back home from my morning errand, I called a few places nearby to see what the damage was going to be (for those of you that don't know bugs, you can't just pop off the plastic and replace the bulbs, you have to remove the whole headlight to change the bulb). One place quoted me just about $80 for the two bulbs. This seemed fair and was far less than the dealership charges. But alas, I called German Autosport and YEP, they were lower yet again! $44 including all labor and parts to replace the two bulbs. I let Roberto know I would be right in. I showed up and he immediately had his technician begin working on my car. Thirty minutes later and I was done, ready to take on the night in my travelling lime skittle. At this point, I cannot think of any reason to keep shopping around. The service is quick, the prices are more than fair and they always get the job done. STAY FAR FAR AWAY FROM THIS SCAM ARTIST!!!!! I have an extensive background in car restoration and repair. I have worked on cars most of my life and have many many friends that are certified mechanics or very knowledgeable in this field. ROBERTO IS DISHONEST AND A SCAM ARTIST!!!!! He will give you a decent price for labor (and stress he is giving you a great deal) but he chargers you 4 times the amount he paid for the part ( sometimes even more!!) and just claims that is what he paid for it and what it costs. I caught him in multiple lies and have it all on audio tape!!!! Let me explain how this works and why. When you come in to a shop to get your car fixed the shop gives you an estimate. They give you how much the part costs and what the labor will cost and give you a final price. Where do they get these parts? There are a number of companies you can get your parts from, one of the largest is called WorldPac and almost every mechanic has an account. These types of services bring you parts at a discounted rate (because you are a mechanic that orders lots of parts) and they deliver it to your shop as long as you are a member of their service. You have to be a certified mechanic shop to get membership. An honest shop would disclose what they paid and the actual time they spent on your car ( not the suggested time the manual says it might take - which is always inflated and is another way mechanics rip people off, charging for the suggested time which is higher rather than the actual time they spent) - from this they give you a final price. Roberto will give you the time it takes from the manual then will hike the price of the part up 4 or 5 times!! THIS IS LIEING AND INCREDIBLY DISHONEST. My story: My alternator died in front of his shop so I had him look at it. He quoted me $180 for labor and a price of $565 for a new alternator! Ha! I told him that alternator price was way way too inflated. Luckily i know how much they cost! I looked it up on world pac and it was only $312! THAT THIEF! I called him out and he said he didnt have a WorldPac account but he would make some calls. He called me back and said the best he could do for the same part was $389? I was in a meeting - i dont have time to go buy an alternator right then so i just had him do it. I show up at his shop to pay for the car and there is WorldPac making a delivery!! I saw the part on his desk! I called him out and he stumbled, "i have an account but i just dont buy very often so they dont like me" ha! It is a standard price! So he lies again. So i leave pretty upset and i call my mechanic who calls him and RECORDS THE WHOLE CONVERSATION. He calls him out and asks for an explanation and after avoiding the question he finally admits and I quote " I'M NOT RUNNING A CHARITY...I WANT TO MAKE MONEY" then entries to say everyone does it blah blah blah - you are busted. If he marked it up and was honest about it i wouldn't be so mad but i got screwed - dont let this be you!!! Roberto is my new mechanic in LA! My parents have a mechanic in the Bay Area that they are loyal to, and I had been searching for a trustworthy shop ever since I had moved down south. I had a broken water pump and originally went to a place on Venice Blvd to get a quote. Apparently with Subarus, there are two types of water pumps: one that's expensive, and one that is standard/inexpensive. The original place quoted be about $1,000 and said that my 2006 Subaru Forester required the expensive water pump. I decided to get a second opinion. My friend has an Audi and recommended German Autosport to me after being pleased with their work on his own car. I met Roberto and he examined the car while I went across the street to get a coffee (Undergrind is another recommendation!). When I came back, Roberto said my car required the LESS expensive, standard water pump, and also quoted me pretty much half of what the first place did. This is when I realized I had found a trustworthy shop. I have no idea how to decipher which water pumps work in which cars, so for a mechanic to tell me that my car takes a less expensive water pump when they could've easily swindled me into paying more, that says something. Roberto and his crew fixed my water pump and my car was good as new! Things that I appreciate: -Roberto picks up the phone within 2-3 rings and will let you speak and explain to him what's going on with your car without speaking over you and without attitude/judgement. He talks to you like a human. -Roberto chats with you when you're in his office which is nice because it definitely builds a good and honest rapport with his clients. I've heard stories about his mom and he knows about my life now too (and my car!). -Whenever I have a problem with my car and call, he just tells me to bring it in. I've never made an appointment- he just tells me the hours and if it's busy or not, and to just bring it in earlier in the day. They do the work fast and my car is always ready ASAP. He really works with your schedule. -I got my battery changed and alternator replaced at one point as well and it was really reasonable. -Finally, my car was spontaneously making odd noises and I called Roberto and he told me to just come in. He legit left his office to drive around the block to listen to it for me. He said the sounds were normal and that he didn't want to charge me to fix something that wasn't there or wasn't wrong. Truly, I almost don't want more people to know about this place because then it might get more busy (less availability for me), but I really think they deserve all the business they can get because they do such a great job. I was referred to Roberto, the owner at German Autoworks, and was very pleased. Side note: I went to BMW Santa Monica (avoid!!!) to just have them diagnose my car since it had been a while since I had checked if anything mechanical or otherwise was wrong. BMW said for everything they would have to check for, they would charge $200+.... aka, if I wanted them to check my A/C - $200, if I wanted them to also check my brakes, another $200... If you don't go to Roberto, you're losing money. Period. I can not recommend Roberto highly enough. He is honest, extremely knowledgeable, and does an excellent job at such a minimal cost that I've left there feeling almost guilty several times. On my last visit, he repaired a high pressure hose on my power steering system for so cheap that I find it hard to believe that he included labor in the cost. He also replaced a burned out signal light at no cost. I didn't ask for it to be fixed, but he found it, replaced it, and didn't even mention that he had fixed it. My friend brought his 2008 911 to the Porsche dealer for a service and was quoted almost $1000 for the work. He then took it to Roberto who did the exact same work for just over $300. I'm very pleased with the way Roberto has handled my most recent repair, as well as all repairs before this. I got a diesel Jetta, which limits the places I can go to get things serviced. I do not understands cars very well, but I do understand cars well enough to know to avoid going to the dealership. (Volkswagen Santa Monica) In my most recent visit to German Auto Sport, I had come to get my water pump and timing belt and other minor repairs completed. My dad is an engineer and very good with cars, and had diagnosed all of my problems ahead of time. Roberto's findings of what needed repairing with my car were exactly as what my dad had stated, and within the price range that my dad said would be reasonable (this was about a $700 job). It was nice to know that Roberto was definitely not screwing me around. He was polite and friendly every step of the way, and great at explaining the issues to a non-car guy. Roberto allowed me to take the car in with only 1 day notice and had it all fixed by the end of the day. Prior to this visit, I had stopped by for minor things, which Roberto had always been very helpful with. One time long ago, Roberto had courteously replaced a broken headlight and only charged me for the part. read more

His prices are cheap, but his work is terrible. If you care about your car and want good work, I would highly recommend you not taking your car here. I took my Mercedes here for an oil leak, door handle issue, and sunroof issue. He said it would take a couple days. He kept my car for 3 weeks, and when I finally got it back, the sunroof was more damaged than when I brought it in. I had to take it to another mechanic and spent an enormous amount of money to undo the damage he did. Also, they forgot to screw the passenger door panel back in and it came off when someone tried to close the door. He also said he can fix the sagging headliner in my car, which I agreed to. It came back with holes and rips, and wasn't the same material as rest of the panel. I asked him to refund me completely, and he refused. I will say that he is an honest man, but I just don't know how he's still in business with the caliber of work that is done. read more
