I love our local neighborhood market. This place is a diamond in the rough. At first glance I found it to be very unassuming. The more I went to this place, the more I found items that I just can't find elsewhere. Their alcohol selection is incredible especially for beers and ciders. I've never seen a bigger selection at a grocery store. They also have a wide variety of cheeses and charcuterie supplies to go with the alcohol selection. They have an in house butcher who will customize what you need as well as an in house bakery and deli. Some of my favorites are their ranch dressing which reminds me of the ranch dressing back home in the Midwest. Their candy and chocolate selection has a wide array of modern day treats as well as many from childhood. My only wish is a wider array of local produce although they usually have the best fresh strawberries I have found. read more

I really loved this store... but now I am suspect of their financial stability and common sense. I cannot think of when I have not bought from this store. But today made me. rethink whether they will be my first stop. Normally, I come to Gerrard's to buy meat and a few other things located in the sought half of the building. Today I needed to get some vegetables. When I did my usual and bought meat I headed over to the other side. When I got there I did not know they had a thrift store-looking corner masquerading as a card display. It looked like it was just thrown there with no regard for the reputation of a premium full-service grocery store. Then I get to the checkout with four items. Those items cost $40ish. I was asked if I wanted a bag. Not to purchase a bag. DID I WANT A BAG? I asked if it was free or ten cents. Cold Play at the checkout said it was 15 cents. You've got to be kidding. Gerrard's is in such dire straights financially that they can't absorb a bag or two when they charge higher prices than most stores. I even explained that I had bought two of the custom Gerrad baskets for $10 each but forgot mine. Nope. I had to get a short lecture on Gerrard's saving the planet from destruction by not giving away free bags. It makes me sad for the old Gerrard's when an employee could use common sense and even bag empathy for a senior citizen just not wanting to drop his amazing Gerrad's ranch dressing. read more

Food from the delicatessen is always great. I just read a few comments on cleanliness. Those are spot on. I noticed no comments from management on anything. Nice they can care less. Customer service on the last few trips had gone way below what it used to be. I was the only customer at the deli. Worker looked at me and went back to cleaning a meat cutter. Ten minutes to be helped. The gal working the only open register was exceptionally rude. No eye contact, would not respond to questions and scowled. Horrible employee. Called to speak to a manager so they could help improve the issues. She was also rude and disinterested. Said she rarely walks by those positions. Acted like I was bothering her. Been going for years, and will try one more time. If still the same I will be done. Too bad for a small independent grocer. read more

Very disappointed in their Prime Rib Dinner from their catering section. We have ordered their Prime Rib and Ham dinners for Thanksgiving and Christmas due to it being an excellent quality/deal without the hassle of cooking because you can pick it up hot. When you pick it up, it's all packed in a box for you to take home. There were just a few things that didn't go well this time for Thanksgiving. 1) There needs to be more behind the deli counter the day before and of a holiday pick up. There was a line and one was making bread, another was trying to put together my order which I waited 45 min for, and another had to go and make something that was paid for but was not made the day before for pick up. Finally, another one went on a 10 min break. 2) The Prime Rib dinner is listed at $219.99 with everything that's listed. At the time I was charged $229.99 which I didn't realize that was not the price that was listed. 3) When everything was taken out of the box to transfer to platters at home, the green bean amandine sat in some milky sauce (which has never been served this way), the mashed potatoes had a weird texture and taste (maybe from a box?) and there were no gravy, au jus or horseradish in the box. (I should of looked but in the last 4 years, we've never had an issue and I've already been at the deli for 45 min). I had to go back to Gerrard's and explained there were no gravy or au jus in the box. They gave me a container of turkey gravy and was told the au jus is the meat dripping in the pan. (It hasn't been this way so I was confused. I swear we've always received a small container of horseradish and a container of au jus) 4) The worse part was when the Prime Rib was sliced, it was almost 40% of inedible fat and I had to trim most of it off. I am surprised that they did not trim the excess because there was so much excess fat and they have a great butcher counter. (I know prime rib is a fattier cut of meat but not this much) No one touched the green beans, kids left mashed potatoes on their plates and there were not enough Prime Rib to serve a larger cut. Luckily I purchased extra sides and a turkey breast from Costco also but truly a very disappointing catering meal. I still love Gerrard's and will still shop there, but there needs to be more help at the counter (maybe a "caller/expediter" to make sure that things that need to go out are coming out in timely and correct manner), and quality check of what is being served especially when they are serving inferior items than what is listed or being paid for. (I guess I can also cook myself...ugh) read more

This place is an amazing small market with an amazing beer selection. I'm sure the prices are lower at the big brand stores but so is the quality. If you come here bring a sweatshirt because it has two beer caves stocked with an amazing selection. I even managed to find a few Russian River Pliny the Elder in stock. When I came home with the ribs, I ate a few pieces and saved the rest for the next few days. I woke up the next morning with food poisoning due to the ribs. I was sick for the next two weeks. Gerrards is pretty cool. We used to come here a lot back in the day but don't live close enough to it now. I go there for the gourmet coffee that I can't find in the big grocery stores and the specials that they have on their meat from time to time. The reason for this 5-star review of Gerrard's is because of Tom (owner/manager). I hadn't known Tom prior to this experience, but he really did something special for me: On Christmas Eve, I was running around town and had managed to get the gifts that I had planned for everyone in my family, except the See's chocolates for my grandfather. See's was closed, and I went by Gerrard's as a last ditch effort, but assumed they did not sell See's. Tom was there when I walked in, so I asked him if they sell See's, and he confirmed they didn't. However, after showing me the different chocolate options they had, he left and then came back a few minutes later with his own PERSONAL box of See's candy, and offered it to me to give to my grandpa for Christmas. Sadly being a native here in Redlands you go to Gerard's because its small and a staple here in town. I've noticed a change in employees in the Side Bar Cafe which has been awesome but Melanie unfortunately, has been unpleasant to deal with. We often go to Gerard's for their acai bowls and yummy desserts. The last 2 times we have been, Melanie has been the one to help us. She doesn't smile or seem happy to be employed there. Customer service has seemed to go out the door. When working with the public you have to be somewhat happy or smile so the customer seems like you want them there. With Melanie it seems like you are annoying her that she has to help you. The 2 times we went in she forgot fruit on our bowls. We love Gerrard's! We also love the bakery/deli. The kids make sure to get a free cookie when we go. If you need a snack to go with your beer- grab some Beecher's Flagship cheese and crackers from the cheese aisle. It's our favorite. We stop at the beer cave after church (We're Reformed so we recognize other church members when we're buying beer. #cheersandamen) to grab a mix and match six-pack. So two weeks ago today I went in to purchase some meat and also some salads from the deli. I ordered some bacon from behind the meat counter and asked the gentleman if there was anyone working behind the deli counter and he said yes and pointed to a lady with short blue dyed hair over in the corner. I walked up to the deli counter, she looked up at me, turned around and went into the back without acknowledging me or anything. I waited several minutes and she never came back out so I addressed the gentleman behind the meat counter again saying "do you think she's coming back". He said let me go find her and walked a crossed the counter and into the back. He came out a few minutes later and said that she would be out shortly. I waited at least another five minutes and she never returned so I asked him again "do you think she was coming back out? Finally I see her make her way out from the back. She walked behind and up to what looked like a sink, washed her hands, dried her hands off with some paper towels walked back to the table and started fiddling around with some thing on the table still ignoring me, not acknowledging that I was still waiting there, and now another customer who came up and was standing beside me waiting for service. Finally reluctantly the lady with the blue hair came up to me and I said "good afternoon how are you?" No response or smile or any sorry to keep you waiting. I said I would like to have 2 lbs of the Cheddar Mac salad in 2 containers. She abruptly slid open the glass doors from behind the counter, pulled out the bowl of salad, turned around and slapped it down very loudly on the back bar making salad spill because of the abruptness and how hard she put it down. She filled up only one container, weighted it and slammed it down in front of me with a lid on it and then turned around and walked off. I looked at the other customer beside me like that was extremely rude do you think she's coming back and the Lady said I don't know. I said forget this I'm leaving so I took my salad and meat and went to check out. When I got to the front there were two young women both young with blonde hair gossiping behind the checkout stand and I came up handed them my meat and salad. I again said good afternoon to them with no response. Then I was told the amount, I paid my bill and then she abruptly asked me did I want my receipt and when I said yes she basically threw it at me. I left the store very upset feeling like I was made to feel like I had inconvenienced these three women for absolutely no reason other than just coming into your store where I purchased $100 worth of items. I've been coming to your store approximately three months now and I will never come back because I've never been treated so rudely me in my entire life. I hope you know that your employees have no business working in customer service because they made me feel like I was insignificant, in their way and that I shouldn't have been in your store. I will never be returning! I attempted to call multiple times the next day and the next couple days thereafter but could never get anyone to answer the phone at your store so I'm left no other option but to leave this extremely negative review. I literally cried all the way home from Redlands and I live in Riverside because never in my life has anyone at any store ever treated me so rudely. Your employees should be ashamed of themselves and you should not continue to hire people or allow people like these three women to work at your store. I like your store because you had the buy one get one free on the meat and also because you're one of the few stores that actually carry the Cheddar Mac salad but after this forget it. Looking for FRESH, awesome strawberries IN MY AREA, I was led to Gerrard's. I had forgotten about this place and hadn't been back since high school and that was years ago. This place is way better then going to any of the major grocery stores, of course as everyone knows, one must travel to specialty stores. The strawberries here are hand picked and locally grown. They come in the old school small green baskets and you can smell them. Something that all major stores lack. While I think French strawberries are the best, for being stateside and in my area, they are the best. Taste the difference! They also have really good couverture chocolate, powder and blocks. Think of this place just as a tad bit better than Trader Joe's. Except TJ's don't have couveture chocolate (not that I've seen anyways). The prices are pretty cheap too compared to TJ's and major stores. The organic stuff is about .50 cheaper sometimes a $1, the utensils are cheaper too. They have a full bakery and deli and everything is made at the store fresh. If you live in the Redlands, Loma Linda, S.B. area you should come here and check out their strawberries. LoL. read more

Tucked away in a quiet, sleepy upscale part of Redlands is Gerrard's. Somewhere in the back of my head I knew this place existed for years - but had never been. It wasn't until my mother suggested we take a trip that I discovered this shining gem of a store - and also rued all the years I never bothered visiting it. To summarize much of what other Yelpers have said; Gerrard's is an upscale grocery store - but that description doesn't really do it justice. I will try to do so accurately here. First, a disclaimer. Yes... the store is a bit pricey on many of its items. It's pretty much on par with a Ralph's or Vons when it comes to prices. A little more on some things, and a little less on others. They also have weekly sales via a circular that brings some items down to reasonable levels. What makes Gerrard's really stand out is their selection. They have a fantastic selection of foodstuffs - especially hard to find items that I've only seen in specialty shops. For instance - there's a shop in Solvang called Vinhus that has this wonderful peppered cheese called "Marco Polo". I've never been able to find it outside of Solvang. I was both stunned and delighted when I found it right there in their gourmet cheese section? At about the same price, if not a little lower, than I found at Vinhus?! They have all kinds of gourmet items from fine cheeses from around the world that you might not find outside of a cheesemonger's shop, to the finest of Boar's Head meats in their deli section. You'll find so many little gems and treasures down their aisles. They also feature produce and merchandise sourced from local farms - with special emphasis on organic foods. But what has truly, truly entranced me is Gerrard's Liquor section. Their selection of wines, for a grocery store; is superb! Almost every appellation and varietal is represented here. Hell...good luck even finding a Pinot Blanc in the "Other Whites" section of Bev Mo! Gerrard's has at least three different types in stock. And their selection of hard liquors is sublime. They have stuff I didn't even know EXISTED. But really... those of you who are fans of Beers and Ales MUST visit here if for nothing else than their WALL OF BEERS! Yes.. i said it.. wall...of...beers. They have a whole wall (and a half!) of cooler cases with beers, ales, lamibics, porters, stouts, heffe-weizens... you nsme it; from all over the world! The selection is nothing short of epic and you'll spend a good half hour just trying to decide what to bring home. In the (currently) 3 times the wife and I have come here - we've also encountered exceptional service from the employees. They are always helpful and friendly. During one visit, one of the checkers welcomed us personally - noting that she'd never seen us before and asked if we found everything okay - and made suggestions on things we might like based off a few of the items we were purchasing. She really seemed to know a lot about the products they sell. You don't see much of that any more. I really can't recommend Gerrard's any more highly. I would give it 7 stars if I could. Bring some cash, a shopping list, and your imagination and I'm sure you'll come home with some treasured finds and a smile on your race - and a private promise to return! read more

I have been shopping at Gerrards for more than 25 years and it has a great assortment of items and deli and bakery goods. They have a new coffee bar that matches in taste and quality anything that can be found locally. These 4 stars are for the quality of merchandise, employees, and hard working manager I frequently see stocking shelves I was in the store for about 15 minutes today and there were three people not wearing a mask. There is a sign on the door that masks are required but I was told that it is not enforced. To Management. WHY NOT? You have hardworking employees, some who exceed 65 and have been working there for years. Why are you not protecting your responsible shoppers and employees? Masks are a state requirement and this includes you self entitled attention seekers who don't wear a mask. One of the shoppers who was ranting about politics while he was waiting for his lunch coughed around the coffee bar without even attempting to cover his mouth. I can shop online but I came to Gerrards for the coffee bar. Gerard's used to have an amazing selection, but it's terrible now. When I ask the girl when the chicken pot pies were made she said 4 days ago. They were sitting in the case unwrapped and the case was filthy. Most of the meat looked old and even the packaged hot dogs look like they had gotten too warm. I was going to buy the cinnamon bread on the table up front, they're all turned over upside down and when I turn some up they were covered in mold. Others had mold spots. The produce was terrible looking and when I checked the date on the milk it expired the next day. The overall appearance of the store was dirty and disgusting. Sadly the quality of the food sold here has declined horribly. We've been coming here for years as its just A quick walk down the street, but not so much anymore. In the past 2 weeks we have purchased 2 gallons of spoiled milk, rotten produce and the meat they have been putting up for sale should be criminal. Some other posts have complained about the ice cream....this has been an issue for Gerard's for nearly a decade. They wont invest in new freezers, so you simply cannot buy the ice cream here. Not a big deal, but now the quality of produce, dairy, meat, everything is just non existent.....and sure, the new young kids working here may not be as friendly as Shirley, but they all appear to be nice kids. If you smile and say hi, they will say hello back. Its a two way street. You have to be decent too. I still like Gerard's, the people, the place, just simply cannot shop here too much these days. I have more exposure to this store now that weekly band practice is two blocks away. Always an expensive option, nonetheless, Gerard's is well-stocked with slightly better products than Albertson's and such. Sometimes it's worth it. The expanded microbrewery options makes them a destination for those seeking more than the now homogenized selection at Bev Mo. Their liquor selection is pricy, but the privileged ones on the hill won't mind I am sure. The deli section is my favorite. Not certain that their fried chicken is any better than Von's, for example, but everything else appears to dance circles around the competition. Local products mingle with national brands. One Croatian buddy commented that Gerard's reminds him of a European market. I agree. While not everyone will appreciate the store, cheapwads will avoid I am sure, there is a nice sense that corporate interests are not being served here. read more
