This place is incredible. I came here because of a recommendation from a friend. The food is delicious and very reasonably priced. The Chilli Chicken was fantastic. The cashier made me feel bad because I wasn't paying with cash (as I sat and ate, she was asking everyone else if they had cash instead of card). The food was gross, for lack of a better word. Talk about value. I didn't realize you could pay 4.99 and get a massive container filled with chicken biryani. Yes, it does have a ton of rice... but it's so delicious! And I definitely don't feel like there's not enough chicken and spices to make the dish feel like its not worth its value. I came here and ordered about 50% of the biryani dishes and prathas. I highly recommend the chili chicken! The fish was pretty tasty and the beef biryani came with large shredded pieces which was nice. However, it was a bit on the chewy side. The butter chicken was decent; the sauce to chicken ratio was a pretty high. The prathas are so good! I see most people come in here ordering a pratha with a side of rice. One downside of living on the southside? I am very far away from Devon Avenue. However, Ghareeb Nawaz satisfies my need for Indian food. It's also way cheaper than my favorite restaurant on Devon. For $10, you can get enough food for about four meals. They have pretty basic Indian cuisine, but all the vegetarian options are vegan friendly. I usually get biryani and samosas and just add chickpeas at home. They fill a styrofoam box to overflowing with rice! Wow. It's only $3 for all the biryani too. Share with a friend and you'll still have leftovers. Is it gourmet? No. But if all you want is pretty typical Indian fare, Ghareeb Nawaz is good enough. read more

Ridiculously cheap for pretty decent food. We ordered take out for 9 people and our total was under $40.....insane! Usually $40 won't even cover a date night for two. Quality of the food was overall pretty good. Flavorful sauces, and fresh produce and meat. Wow am I glad this is in University Village. Have you ever had an intense craving for some Indian/Pakistani food - but then you wake up and realize you live 10 miles south of where you are supposed to be? Anyways, the chapathi is great here. Any of the "sandwiches" (a generous piece of chapthi, raita and your choice of meat/veggie curry) is a nice spin on your usual fast food. Note: Ghareeb Nawaz on Devon Street is one of my favourite Indian restaurants in Chicago and their fish curry is my #1 Indian dish in the city. Ghareeb Nawaz Express, on the other hand, is just plain DISRESPECTFUL. If it looks like the photo then it must taste like the photo, right?") masquerading as GN under the familiar (and much loved) name and exploiting the desperation of Muslim UIC students who only eat halal and the ignorance of those who know nothing about how the dishes are actually supposed to taste. This place is an abomination to chicken saag lovers everywhere. I chatted w/ Mohammad (the owner) on fb when the place first opened last year and he was very nice! He offered a free re-do and I went back a couple months later and the food was AWFUL! Was walking by yesterday and decided to give it a try since it's been almost a year and my chicken saag was watery spinach soup with chicken and no flavor. (--DISRESPECTFUL. I was originally attracted to their listing on Uber Eats because of the price. $5.99 for the chili chicken biryani which lasted me 5-6 meals and $4.99 (+$1 for rice) butter chicken which lasted me 2-3 meals. Unbelievable value! But my reason for the 3 stars is for the quality of food. I wrote in the instructions "extra hot" for both dishes but they were no hotter than mild. The biryani was pretty bland and there were some spots of mushiness throughout. The butter chicken was a bit better but was still lacking flavor. Mango Lassi was not to my taste! It tasted more egg-like than milk/yogurt and had a very flat taste, whereas I'm used to having some cardamom or something along those lines (i.e. rose water). Although, price is good (cheap) I would like a bit more quality. The frontier beef (decided to try on a whim) reminded me of hospital food, I don't know why. Samosas were way smaller than I'd like and am used to and the quality of that was so so. The first time I ordered from here and saw the prices I ordered chicken biryani, the chili chicken paratha and curry thinking that around $12 worth of food would be a good dinner and when I got the food it was enough to last me 4 meals. Food was pretty good and the delivery came 20 minutes earlier than expected. For the prices, they are very generous with their portions. One biryani is around $5-$6 and I eat alot and its still enough for 2 meals for me. I ordered Palak paneer and chicken biryani from this place and I can say with confidence that I have never tasted something as awful as these two dishes. They said only boneless chicken biryani was available so we went for it. To our utter shock this boneless chicken "biryani" is not even close to biryani, not even khichadi!! and giving biryani bad name. Dry chicken that looks red due to some food color, absolutely no spices and tasteless rice. No spices at all. Yes, that is correct. Indian food and zero spices. Believe it or not either they have lost it or something was wrong with the kitchen that specific day. In either case, they should not have sold such awful food because I will never go back to this restaurant ever again. I would give a zero if it was possible. Really disappointed. read more
