I would give it 0 stars if I could. An astonishing display of incompetence. Rather than saying they could not do something, they simply tried to force it and in the process ruined a family heirloom. Only go here if you have a disposable watch you want them to manhandle, because they destroyed a 14K vintage quartz Concord while trying to open it and didn't even manage to. See the attached picture for the number they did on a watch which was safe-kept until they got their hands on it. First, Mike, the younger of the two attempted it, and upon failing, handed it to Jeff, the older man. Both were using too much force, but Jeff clearly leaned into it and severely damaged my gold watch. They then gave up, and handed the watch back to me as if they hadn't caused significant damages, and insisted it had not been them when I made them take note of this. read more

I like to support local businesses in general, and took my watch in to Gilden's for a new battery. A few hours later, I noticed that my watch had stopped running, and returned to Gilden's. Without looking at the watch, the owner immediately asked me to leave it with them for further repairs, and began writing up another sales ticket. When I took the watch off, he noticed that the battery cover had not been properly replaced by his staff, and both the battery and battery cover were now missing. He asked me if I lost them, implying that the loss of the battery and cover were my fault. An apology was not offered. Rather than calling a retailer in NY for the replacement battery cover, he called the manufacturer in Switzerland, and told me that it would take four to six weeks for the replacement battery cover to arrive. (It's a Swatch.) I suggested they call the Swatch store in Times Square, and then had to call Gilden's twice for updates. They never called me, and they don't have an answering machine or an e-mail address. The wrongly installed battery isn't the problem--that could happen to anyone, anthough it obviously shouldn't. But the customer service was really terrible. The owner should have taken responsibvility for the error. I would find it very difficult to take anything back to them for repair or service. read more

I have gone here several times for jewelry cleaning and repair and to get my watch battery changed. They have always been very nice to me and done a good job on the work, so it is now my go-to spot for these sorts of things. Some things (like changing a watch battery or basic cleaning) they can do on the spot while you wait for 10 minutes or so, which is very convenient. read more

They charged me $15 for adjusting the chain length of my citizen watch. After 2 weeks or so, the adjusted part fell apart and I saw a bolt that is 1/4 longer than the originals and doesn't fit well into the hole. I'm so disappointed. read more

Gilden's is wonderful! I've received some beautiful gifts from there, and I've also made a few purchases from them. On one occasion, I was out of town and wanted to order something by phone to be picked up by my brother. The saleswoman was very helpful and nice. She put the items together for me, let me pay over the phone and even gift wrapped it for me. Their service is excellent, as is their selection. I brought my Granny's engagement ring in to have the stone re-set. The prongs had been badly worn and damaged and needed to be replaced. The work was completed in 9 days, as promised, and the result was gorgeous. It looks like a brand-new ring. Everyone there was friendly and helpful, both in person and on the phone. I moved after giving my jewelry for them to repair and my husband picked up the jewelry and brought to me. He did not open to check when he picked up. I found my jewelry repaired with poor quality and took the picture when I received it from my husband. I tried to call the store multiple times. No body answered the call and no voice mail function or email communication installed. I disputed the charge with my credit card company and get refunded. Then the store tried to contact me and asked what happened. I sent in the picture of the jewelry with apparent defects. The person denied that was the condition when they passed to my husband . It was a frustrating process and an offensive attitude. Not recommend this store at all. read more

I needed to get my engagement ring re-sized to be smaller. This is an antique ring that a previous shop had said they didn't even want to try to clean because they were afraid of damaging it. I took it to Gilden's and expressed my concerns. They took a look at it and determined that they saw no reason why it couldn't be resized. It was done in a week (exactly the amount of time they said it would take), and came back perfect and polished. The price was extremely reasonable (about $35). They also sold me a ring bridge for another ring that was too big, and installed it for me for no charge. Overall, I am pleased. read more

I've gone here over the years for battery changes and new bands for my watches, so I thought I could trust them. Today I had a watch band replaced and when I got the watch back, a chunk had been broken off the edge of the watch's crystal, near where the new watch band attaches. I noticed this immediately. Even though the salesperson (turns out it was her husband who damaged my watch, so no big surprise that she was silent when he denied any wrongdoing and I insisted that both she and I would have noticed if the damage had already been there when I left the watch for the band change). She had been looking at the watch with me while we searched for an appropriate band and most certainly would have noticed this defect, as would have I, had it been present when I turned the watch over to them, they insist glibly that they did not do it. Plain and simple. I had no time to argue, so I left and ran to my next meeting with the watch in an envelope. Sadly, I had just paid them to put a new battery in the now unusable watch. Later when I get the watch home, I go to put it on, and see that the man who replaced the band (not the person who has done my past work there) sheared off a section of the surface of the new band and also scratched the back of my watch. So, he was capable of damaging the band while putting it on the watch, but he couldn't POSSIBLY have damaged the watch crystal?! Interestingly, I have the old band, it saw years of use and the surface is still intact without anything shorn off anywhere. They are willing to sell me a new crystal for $45 with no discount whatsoever. Right, like I'm going to trust them to change the crystal they broke?!!!!!! I was even willing to split the cost, since there was a very small chink in the crystal at the time I gave it to them, really miniscule, but something I'd be glad to see gone. I never would have considered changing the crystal over such a small thing, though, but nor would I want to wear the watch at all in the condition they returned it to me. They say they will allow me to return the damaged band for a full refund, and have given me the generous time frame of one to two days to come back in, during business hours, of course, since they do not have evening hours. To be fair, I'm not sure about the time frame. They told me to come in tomorrow, and when I explained that may not be possible, they said to come in the following day, Saturday, as if that were a very generous offer. Initially they said I could bring it in and they would see if they could do anything about it - like what?! I asked if they could take remove it and refund my money. Had they said they'd find me a replacement or refund my money, that might have been acceptable, but the way they phrased it, it sounded more like they were going to see if they could somehow fix it - how do you fix a shiny, textured surface that has been sheared off so that it is not shiny or textured, just a bit fluffy? So regretful that I trusted them with my dear watches! I would never give them a penny of business again, and if you value your watches and jewelry, you should avoid them. read more
