With the next batch, they started giving food to the next table before finishing ours. The recent version just tastes like capsaicin extract added to their hot sauce. It's not totally horrible, but the old sauce was vastly superior. I simply love this place. This is my go to spot. The others in my party ordered the fillet mignon steak sandwich and 1/2 rack of ribs with sweet potato fries. The steak was tender and cooked perfectly. The ribs were a on the dry side but seasoned well. There was a healthy portion of waffled sweet potato fries that were very good. Ordered a steak with rice pilaf. The server brought me a couple dinner rolls, accompanied by cold, unspreadable butter pads. The rolls were room temperature. I tried eating one, but it was wholly unappealing. When my dinner arrived, the first thing I noticed was the rice dish really wasn't rice pilaf. It was tasty, but nothing resembling rice pilaf and it wasn't hot, just a little warm. The steak was delicious and done just how I like it. Although it was a little on the thin side. (I think her name was Christine), She had been a waitress for decades, but was new to Gilligans. We wanted for nothing, as we ordered first an appetizer, then steaks. Perfect steamed clams, and then steaks. All cooked to perfection, with one rare, one slightly more cooked, as requested. My friend, who can finish almost any entree, needed a box. I still had over 1/2 my steak left when I boxed--and less than most places charge for far less in both quality and quantity. The "sides" were delicious, not afterthoughts. A salad lover like me appreciates that. Fresh baked dinner rolls, a thing of the past, are not to be missed. Trendy? No. Just solid service and delicious traditional meals. When a filet mignon sandwich is offered on the menu for $16, that should be a red flag. But I ordered it anyway because I haven't had a steak sandwich in a long time. It was tender, like filet mignon should be, but slightly overcooked (medium, not medium-rare), and flavorless. As for condiments - lettuce and a slice of tomato - it was uninspired, having no onions or sauces to liven it up. My lunchmate's chicken sandwich was much more interesting, topped as it was with fried pickles and a creamy garlic aioli. The most memorable part of the meal was dessert. They had seven unique treats to choose from, and we settled on the baklava cheesecake. If you're thinking "baklava cheesecake? I never heard of such a thing," then you know why we picked it. Hats off to whoever came up with the idea! It was a little messy to eat, but worth the effort. All-in-all, if you're looking for a place to catch a few drinks with friends, watch a game and shoot some pool, then Gilligans should be on your shortlist. Well, my drink was fine. That's the good part. I ordered the eggplant Parmesan for lunch, with spaghetti. It came, with 3 two inch pieces of eggplant, with barely enough cheese on them to call them parmigiana. And the side of spaghetti was another tragedy. It was swimming in a puddle of pink water, not drained at all, but topped with a glob of Pomidoro sauce, that slowly drowned in the water underneath.
