I've been to GinGin's twice now and both times were okay. As a sister restaurant to Butcher's Union (one of my favs in town), I was really hoping for the best! I love the space, I love the layout of the 3 different vibes, and the food was delicious! It just took time to figure out how to get there. Pro tips: Make a reservation ahead of time - don't wait, just make a reservation and cancel if you know you don't need it. Walk-ins are a nightmare and you'll end up waiting 3+ hours! However, there's a few things I don't love. 1) The lighting... after a certain time in the evening, they make it DARK AF and it was so hard to see what the menu was, our food that even the bartenders made a joke about it. Let's not make this the vibe. Dim lighting is good but dark? No, thanks. 2) Noise - why is it that we don't use sound dampening in an industrial space knowing that it'll echo and be super super loud? It was difficult to hear my own table which made it feel more hype than intimate, which is what the atmosphere was giving. 3) Seating was weird. I understand that they have to limit servers and space it out for the kitchen, but we were encouraged to sit by the bar before our table was ready and there were like 4 tables empty behind us for almost 40 minutes before we were brought into another space and sat somewhere completely different. We could have ordered dinner at the bar but given there were a handful of us, we wanted to sit together to have a conversation with our meal. 4) The server was not really forthright about what was out on the menu, I had to order 3 different things before she finally came back and gave us an update. By that point, I was just hungry and disappointed. The food was good but I wasn't thrilled. The second time I visited, I just straight up asked what they were out of so I wasn't put in that same situation but it would be great if the servers came armed to tell you that when you've been waiting a couple hours to be seated. I want to give it one last shot (3rd time's a charm), make a reservation ahead of time, get dinner at like 6pm vs 9pm and see how the vibes change! read more

We had reservations for 3 At 4:45 on a Wednesday. We sat inside in a booth in a corner with a skylight overhead. We requested the booth because the other areas in the room were too dark. The ambiance is great and the decor was great. Service was also great. Our party of 3 wanted to chat and get caught up so we were not focused on ordering right away. Our waiter understood and checked in without pushing. We ordered a variety of things to share. We ordered the meatballs starter. Sauce and bread were very tasty but the meatballs were a much softer consistency than expected. For entree's we ordered the New York Au Poivre, crab lumache, scallop risotto, with a side of asparagus and au gratin potatoes. The scallop risotto was excellent, the pasta was good but not a lot of rich flavor. The crab was lost in the dish. The steak was very tough and was sent back after 2 bites. The waiter alerted management and Anna came to our table right away to replace the order. My husband chose the French dip as a substitute. He said that was excellent and the onion broth served with it was perfect. For dessert we shared the chocolate cake and lemon crème brûlée. The waiter suggested the cake. He was spot on. Excellent texture, moisture, mouth feel and umami. The crème was not as satisfying to the tongue. About 7 pm, the restaurant started to fill up and get noisy to the point it was noticeably hard to have a conversation. Overall it was a nice evening out but the food was hit and miss and the noise level rose as the evening progressed. My advice is go early and if you get something that is less than what you expect, signal the waiter and get the issue resolved right away. read more

I have been trying to go here for a while and I finally took the initiative for my brothers birthday. Went on a Tuesday evening at 8pm. A bigger party but it was still an 45 min wait. Place is busy, on a Tuesday? Excited so we tried some cocktails at the bar. Justin was excellent in assisting us in choosing and whipping up some cocktails. I had the side car which was no joke. Surprisingly right after my drink, our table was available. Server was excellent. Attentive. And informative. A busy establishment like this should have on point staff and it did! We ordered almost everything on the menu. Ceviche, tartare, burrata, the gem salad and for entrees I had the Faroe Island Salman, table mates got ribeye, dry aged steak, and a halibut. All entrees were excellent. Cooked perfectly and went well with our sides we ordered mushrooms, scalloped potatoes, mashed, and asparagus. We shared family style and it was very good and filling. Expensive? Yes it was, but quality was there with an amazing atmosphere minus the fact they dimmed the lights down so low at 9pm. I get it, it's late but I'd like to see what I'm eating. You can see on my pictures I needed flash and I have the later Apple phone. Standout dishes was the Gem Salad. Grapefruit with pecorino? Their take on the Caesar and I really liked it. A nice addition to GR dining out. Can be tough to get a reservation as they only allow for half the tables to be reserved. I prefer a reservation when I am planning an evening out. I refuse to wait an hour for a table. I started with a Wedge Salad. It was good, not great. I like a classic steakhouse wedge salad. This one included cucumber and dill. While it had bacon and blue cheese dressing - the bacon was sparse and ground into the tiniest bits, while the dressing barely had any actual blue cheese in it. The small cherry tomatoes were a bit bland on flavor. I would not order this again. The Delmonico Steak was tender and medium rare as I ordered. It comes in a garlic butter which is good and not overpowering. I opted for the Sauce Béarnaise. It was awesome. I also had the potato gratin. Wow, the flavor here was rich and creamy. They accept reservations for half of their capacity allowing for walk ins, but also catering to those who plan ahead. Parking available around the block on street or there are a handful of lots to pay and park nearby. Good proximity to other bars and restaurants for bopping around on the Westside of town. Steaks were excellent and the sides were rich and filling. Highly recommend for girls night, date night or for smaller groups - maybe 6 people max. It's very loud, FYI. I cannot say enough good things about Gin Gin's. We made a reservation for 6pm on a Friday. When we walked in - the place was packed. But we were quickly sat in a nice booth. Service was impeccable. Food was oh so delicious. For starters, we had Wagyu Meatballs, Daily Ceviche and Whipped Burrata. The meatballs were definitely my favorite of those three. The Burrata was good but slightly bland. For main courses, we had Ribeye and Cavatelli with Wagyu Hangar Steak and a side of mushrooms. Both were so flavorful and huge portions. Been looking forward to trying Gin Gin's since it opened. Knocking it down another star because of the reservation system. It's terrible. I've been a long time customer at Butchers Union and their old Waitlist system that just changed over to the same one being used here. You can't plan ahead because the weekend reservations aren't open for dinner here, at least they haven't been when I've tried. Coming from out of town as we are. We usually hit up a few spots while in the area and make a day of it. Parking is never easy so having to leave an establishment to drive over and physically put our name in, as opposed to being able to join the Wait-list on our phones, then driving back to wherever we were and finding parking again, is a huge inconvenience. Then instead of being able to check the app you have to call the restaurant repeatedly to get an update on timing. It was such an inconvenience to the whole day I'm not actually sure that we will be back to either restaurant without a reservation which has been impossible to get since it's changed over. I suppose if you live locally it may be easier. There are way too many places in Grand Rapids that make being able to dine at their restaurant a lot easier process. As for our experience when we finally were able to get a seat. It was a bit of a shock after a 2 1/2 hr wait that was supposed to be 2 hrs. To be sat and see half the restaurant open. Even worse when you get the smallest table. It took over 20 minutes to receive our drinks. Again it wasn't busy. Our server was helpful in offering suggestions. I feel the staff is much friendlier at Butchers Union including the front of house staffing. For dinner I had the Fish with Risotto and my husband had a burger which was overcooked. I also ordered the Tuna Crudo which was very fresh and delicious. I don't feel the sides are priced appropriately for what you get. $12 for Asparagus is what I would expect to see at a high end steakhouse not here. The lighting in the patio was so dark you can't read the menu without your phone flashlight or take any good photos to make a review. read more

Our server highlighted their oysters, steaks, and homemade pastas, so we tried all three. Cape Cod oysters were meaty, sweet, and briny. My ribeye was wonderfully marbled, fired to perfection, and mouthwateringly juicy (add truffle butter and mushrooms and expect your taste buds to send you TY notes!). And the spaghetti and gnocchi are both winners. Cocktails are balanced and varied--try one of their specialty martinis. Sides are a la carte (try the potatoes gratin). Lemon creme brûlée could use less salt in the custard, but the butterscotch brownie is amazing. Staff are friendly and quick with good suggestions. Dinner gets busy. Reservations recommended. Instead of reaching over everything in the middle of conversation. The wagyu meatballs were very tender. They were good, but nothing crazy. The shrimp corn chowder was different. I've never had corn chowder, but I'm assuming since it tasted like dissolved cornbread that it was on point! It was good, but the random chewy shrimp chunks seemed out of place. Very filling though. A great new addition to Grand Rapids, and the Butcher's/O'toole's family. This is more high-class and definitely pricey. While delicious, I wasn't impressed by the price for the steak frites for what was presented. It was literally a steak on 1 plate and fries on another - it didn't look like a cohesive dish for $39. At that price I expect a bit more on presentation. Cocktails were fine - the old fashioned a wee bit too sweet, but drinkable. The atmosphere is chic, and the building lot bigger than I would have guessed! They have outdoor seating as well as large windows/doors that open to bring the outside inside. Our server was wonderful. The meatballs were a highlight. They melted in your mouth. So good - highly recommend. We'll definitely be back in the future. Came here again with friends a week later and the ambiance continues to be 5/5. I would say it's one of my favorite settings in Grand Rapids. The food was pretty good. I ordered the kibb salad which was fresh and good. I then ordered the Spaghetti a La Chitarra which came out a little cold, I'll be honest. I wonder if it's because they're trying to get all the dishes out at the same time. My friend ordered the ravioli ricotta and loved it. I took a picture of everyone's salads as well; everyone loved them. We visited on their first public day and went early. The decor is brilliant! Exactly what I would expect from the Butchers Union folks. I ordered the GG Negroni (gotta get a gin drink at a place called Gin Gins) and my wife ordered a mocktail. We had the meatballs as an appetizer and they were amazing. That crispy focaccia garlic bread with it was delish! We each had the filet and then ordered the asparagus and heirloom tomato sides. my steak came out undercooked and they had to refire it, so my wife ate her meal while I nibbled on sides. I 100% recommend for the atmosphere and drinks. Will definitely go again to try more menu items. The ambiance is excellent, upscale, modern, clean feels more high-end, compared to most restaurants in GR. Service was very good. Our waitress was polite, attentive and seemed to know the menu pretty well. My favorite part of the meal might have been the focaccia bread that was served with the wagyu meatballs and the whipped burrata. It was very lite, fluffy, soft inside, and crispy outside. The Wagyu meatballs were the best value imo. The portion for the price makes this an excellent choice and the meatballs were delicious. The whipped burrata was good but ours did not have any balsamic on it, which you could tell it was missing. I do recommend and will try again, but hopefully with balsamic next time. I was disappointed in the wedge salad. It tasted excellent but ordered the large portion to split and still seemed pretty small to me. I ate my half in 4 bites. My wife loved her swordfish. It looked and tastes fresh. My dry aged steak was ordered medium rare and seemed closer to the rare side. I don't mind a rare steak so I didn't have an issue with it. Was good but for $74, I would recommend the standard prime New York strip. We didn't love the dessert options, so skipped on dessert. Our drinks were made perfectly and were very chilled which we were both very happy about. Dirty martini and an espresso martini. They were out of the Prime French Dip and the Dry Aged Ribeye, which both sounds amazing. Gin Gin's does a really nice job of filling a need for a slightly more causal steakhouse experience in Grand Rapids without having to go to The Chop House or Ruth's Chris. The whole experience is more relaxed, but the food hasn't suffered because of this. The interior has a bit of a speakeasy vibe and gives you an elevated level of a casual dining room. The exterior sits quietly off a side street, about a half a block from the very busy Bridge Street scene, so you're definitely close enough to partake in plenty of before and/or after meal activities. Our service was excellent, and all the food was definitely a cut above average. The owners of this place also own Butcher's Union and O'Toole's Public House - both of which are around the corner. I've been to all three places now, and all of them are great representatives of their respective experiences. Probably the single best steak I've ever had. I typically order ribeye for flavor but did not want such a big steak so ordered the 8 oz filet instead. The first time the I've ever had filet where it tasted like anything. Perfect medium rare and the crust. That crust!. Drinks were well crafted and generous pours. The potato gratin was not overly cheesy and amazing flavor. Our server did a great job and when the area we were in became a bit hot and stuffy, she found us a new table. I've been here a couple times and absolutely everything I've tried so far has been delicious. The first time I got their homemade pasta and vodka sauce. It was amazing. I'm someone who generally has a hard time eating leftovers, but this meal was delicious reheated the next day for lunch. The second time I went I had their filet mignon. They cooked it perfectly and the side of au gratin potatoes was cheesy and delicious. Every member of their staff that I interacted with was kind and helpful. One thing to keep in mind is that they are extremely busy, especially on the weekends. If you want a table Friday or Saturday evening, I would highly recommend making a reservation, which was easily done on their website. read more
