I really love this restaurant, although my first visit was less than stellar. I ordered a lunch dish with tofu and, even though my server knew I was vegan,* it came with pork. He didn't seem concerned or apologetic, and nothing was taken off my bill--responses that are usually automatic at other restaurants. Having said that, my other three visits have been wonderful. I always ask for one of Tammy's tables. (Everyone else seems nice too, but I enjoy the way she works with people.) We usually order something from the Americanized menu, and something from the authentic menu. Authentic dishes I like are rice cakes with greens, and sautéed pea sprouts. The food is really good, and plentiful, and quick! It's not cheap, but certainly not overpriced. We almost always have an entire meal in our take-out boxes at the end. Amazing Chinese food. The food off of their normal menu is what you expect from any Chinese place. Their authentic menu is just something else though. The food from there tastes much better than the Americanized chinese food. Only a single complaint: Their spicy food isn't spicy enough for me, even asking for extremely spicy. There's a sign outside that says "Authentic Chinese Food." What does that even mean? What makes something authentic? But then I went inside to discover two menus, one with American-Chinese and -Japanese food and one with Chinese food. As you can imagine, there is a lot to choose from. Their food ranges from simple lo-mein noodles to duck tongue and ox tail. The drinks are fun, and they have green tea ice cream on their dessert menu! Always a plus. There's lot of space inside so it never feels crowded. The food comes out fairly quickly as well! I would recommend trying the stir-fried udon noodles. So delicious! read more

I work at Hampshire College and occasionally stop into Ginger Garden for lunch meetings. I am always pleased with the cuisine and have sampled an ample range. The appetizers are fresh and not over large in portion, but are reasonably priced so you can sample a few. We usually get soups (miso and wonton are favorites) egg rolls and chicken fingers. The chicken fingers are the type I like most- not too over breaded and with a tender bite and slightly sweet batter. They offer a full menu of Classic American Chinese, Japanese, and Authentic Chinese Cuisine. They also have a wide range of sushi options. I am not Chinese, but I almost always order something off the authentic menu. It is a little pricier but the food is so unique and delicious, it's worth the extra cost. On my last visit I had a simply amazing stir fried bamboo and Chinese Spinach in a rich, savory sauce. It was amazing and so filling! My coworker got a plate of chicken fried rice and deemed it "excellent with lots of chunks." I have also sampled their teriyaki beef entre, chicken in garlic sauce, salmon filet, and beef with broccoli and have loved them all. They offer the traditional hot tea and crispy noodles prior to meal time and the soothing, open atmosphere makes it a nice choice for casual work meetings or dinner with friends. Technically this was my second time eating here since this restaurant catered a business event a couple of days before. Apparently it's a really popular place to eat but unfortunately I was underwhelmed. When we arrived we were greeted but yolks there would be a 30 minute wait. Apparently you will need to make a reservation to ensure timely seating. We sat in the bar area for what seemed like an hour or more before we were seated at a table. Our servers were nice but spoke limited English and we worked though it. The restaurant offers both an "Authentic Chinese" menu and the regular Chinese food fare menu. We ordered appetizers and drinks before placing our table order for several dishes to be served family style. The wontons were a little hard for my liking and I didn't really like the seasoning of the chicken wings. The Samurai sushi roll was excellent, though. For dinner we ordered General Tso chicken (great crispiness but lacking flavor), Lamb 2 ways ( I don't eat lamb but a colleague said it wasn't well seasoned), beef and broccoli (meh, the broccoli was firm how I like it but the beef was chewy), and Short Ribs (wasn't really into it). I like this place. The Chinese food they serve is good, and the service is friendly and attentive. Their menu might benefit from a bit more focus as right now it is very expansive, and not all dishes are equally well-executed. On the upside, however, it does allow Ginger Garden to offer something for everyone, including my vegan girlfriend. Having tried many different dishes, however, I can say that the majority of the time I've left the place feeling content. Generally speaking, I've been the happiest with their Chinese dishes, as the sushi rolls I've tried sometime came out a little small and bland. Their Tofu Homestyle deserves special mention: very tasty, and an absolute favorite of my girlfriend who likens it to crack. The friendly service, ample parking and reasonable prices all add to the already good experience provided by the food--this is definitely a place worth checking out. Me and my roommate picked up takeout on night and we're a bit disappointed. Food was reasonably priced but bland. We ordered teriyaki chicken, egg drop soup and dumplings. My husband and I went here kind of on a whim, we were originally looking for a Chinese buffet but there are none in this area. I've wanted to try Ginger Garden since July so we went for it. I was not disappointed! The staff was friendly, the food was excellent, and everything was clean. We ordered vegetable dumplings (steamed) and they were incredible and I got the chicken and broccoli and it was top notch. Dinner at Ginger Garden was OK normally I wouldn't give them another try but I will go back again because it wasn't God-awful, some aspects were good. The ingredients used were very good however, the execution of some dishes was off. I liked the interior of the space, it was bright and open with a seperate bar area, sushi bar and dining room. BTW they have a huge selection of Sushi that looked appetizing as they passed me. I didn't order any but I will next time as an appetizer. The appetizer of Cold Sesame Noodles was somewhat of a failure in just about every way imaginable. The taste & consistency of the sauce was wrong, it had to much peanut (making it too thick) not enough sesame oil, too many sesame seeds (annoying on the teeth) and too much sriracha (Asian hot sauce). The dish should have some heat to it but it shouldn't be a 4 alarm in your mouth. The portion was unusually small albeit $4.95 The General Tso's Shrimp (aka Gau's) was almost a home run but had too much sauce. As soon as I noticed that I quickly moved all the ingredients onto a separate plate leaving behind a pool of sweet sauce. I find it's often the case in Chinese restaurants that they use too much sauce particularly with sweet dishes, a very Chinese-American thing to do. The shrimp were delicious and huge (super jumbo) probably the best I've had in an Asian restaurant in years. The vegetables that went in the dish were fresh and the extra attention and artistic touch of the Lotus Flower style carrot garnish was impressive, almost Polynesian style. Another nice touch was getting a choice of white or brown rice for a healthier option without any additional charge. For those of you that expect the fading tradition of crispy noodles and hot tea you will again find yourself disappointed. I soon wonder if one will ever find Chinese restaurants that do that as the tradition probably cuts down appetizer and beverage orders (revenue). I was in the mid-west a few months ago and they all do it out there but you get free refills on iced bev's there too. I had my ever favorite Fried Ginger Ice Cream for dessert it was very good, no complaints with that. Hmmm maybe that's why in my first sentence I said I will go back? I am about to tell you about the sweet sweet ecstasy that I experienced at Ginger Garden. We came here on a whim. Never been nor have we heard of it. This is where the madness begins March Madness that is. This speciality roll consisted of spicy scallop, peppered tuna and laced with other magical toppings. The first bite was nothing I've ever experienced. So many flavors coat your entire mouth...heaven. The Mexican roll was pretty good as well. But that's not it. We decided to get the seafood hot and sour soup. Oh my goodness. This was a surprise. It was magical and they didn't skimp on the seafood either. Menu looked promising. Sadly, the food quality was bad. We ordered spare ribs, crab Rangoon and Vietnamese rolls as appetizers. The ribs were really tough, over fried, and greasy as a pound of lard. The crab Rangoon had no crab flavor. The rice rolls were just sad. They were overfilled, veggies did not taste fresh and the sauce was like a paste, making it impossible to dip. The only choice was to use it as a spread. We ordered sesame chicken, sweet and sour chicken and tofu pad Thai for the main course. The chicken was fried probably to fill the lunch crowd needs, and we were given old chicken with their respective sauces. The pad Thai was dry, there was no peanut sauce, and was just disappointing. Cleanliness was nowhere. The carpets were full of days old crumbs. They were also fixing a wall by the entrance causing a sanding sound not too enjoyable by diners. I have eaten there several times with typical results - some dishes very good, a few less so, etc. Not this time. I ordered takeout on Nov 15 and unfortunately experienced severely upset digestion which manifested within an hour after eating. I had a refrig full of leftovers the next morning and had to throw it all away, $39 worth. I now see from other Yelp reviews here that other people picked up even more severe food poisoning around the same days, Nov 15-16. Obviously they have a quality control problem in the kitchen. I also came down with food poisoning after eating at the GG on Saturday, November 16. I reported this to the Amherst board of health. I was in bed for two days with gastrointestinal difficulties that were pretty significant. Still not feeling back to normal and it's Wednesday November 20. I used to like this restaurant and the former owner is a good friend of mine. The fact that the GG preemptively dispatched trolls to happy talk this restaurant on yelp ahead of any negative reviews from us is disturbing. If you're retired or unemployed I don't mind spending a few days in bed or you would be open to a gastric cleanse you may want to roll the dice and eat at the GG otherwise I'd stay away. read more
