This small sushi place in downtown Fanwood always satisfies my craving for eel avocado roll. I like that the rice ratio is just perfect, not thick at all. They don't have clear soup so I would get their dumpling soup which is filling and carries some spice to it that is almost comforting. Ginger? Anyway, I really should venture out of my eel avocado and try some of their specials. We ordered some kimchi to take home and it went well with my own version of ramyun. Lastly, staff here is so nice. They always give us complimentary sushi roll and fresh oranges with mochi for dessert. Small, local sushi joint. Came to have dinner with my friend and we were pleased with our fresh sushi. I ordered 3 rolls (spider roll, shrimp tempura, and an AAC roll). My friend ordered miso soup, Philly roll, and spicy tuna roll. My friend was undecided on which roll she wanted, so our server brought out 2 pieces of the specialty roll to help her decide. That was super thoughtful! Service was fast, attentive. Several servers kept coming around to check on us and fill our water glasses. In the end, our check greeted us with chilled orange slices and a green tea mochi ball, which I thought was a nice touch. We stayed until 3:20pm, and the staff never made us feel uncomfortable, or tired to hurry us out. We didn't realize they closed at 3:00pm. They all shouted goodbye to us, even, abs wished us a nice day! The sashimi was incredibly fresh, and delicious. I asked for thin cut, which they obliged happily. My daughter got a lunch box. Her rolls were very good, but the tempura sadly was not. It was greasy, and the taste of the grease was slightly unpleasant. The decor is the restaurant is basic, bare-bones, but not dirty, or unpleasant. I will go back again, and will recommend this restaurant! read more

What a fantastic experience! We went with a group of friends on a Sunday night and could not have been more impressed with the service and quality. A small restaurant our group of 6 was seated quickly. We brought our own Sake and were quickly provided with glasses and water. Four of us ordered a Sushi Boat so we could sample different items and because it was really cool. Andy Roll, Philadelphia Roll, Spicy Girl ( not spicy), Butterfly Roll, Avacado Roll, Sweet Potato, and 2 others. All were fantastic. This is my first yelp review! I tried Ginger Sushi for the first time for dinner on New Year's Eve. Since Wifey wanted sushi for our last meal of 2011, I looked up some local sushi places near Westfield to try something different from our usual hangout, Nagoya (Love the Sushi there!). Looking at the Yelp reviews, I narrowed down my choices to Daimatsu and Ginger Sushi. Ginger Sushi sounded different so I started combing the online menu for a take out order (2 toddlers usually prevent us from eating out too much). I called in my order @ 7:40pm and ordered Seaweed Salad, Peppered Seared Tuna (w/ Wonderful Sauce), Eel Avocado Roll, Delight Salmon Roll, Seared White Tuna Roll, 2 x White Tuna Sushi, 1 x Yellowtail Sushi. They told me to come pick up the food in 20-25 minutes. Once I arrive around 8:20p (35 mins later), I was told that they are making my food now. I was kind of upset since they told me 20-25 minutes it would be ready, especially since my wife is watching a 1 and 3 yr old by herself at home. All in all I had to wait until 8:50p (over 1 hour) for take out. At least the woman at the counter gave me a free calendar! Woo! When I got home I thought, okay this hopefully will be worth it cause I'm STARVING! I then see that they packed everything in deli plastic containers, I would think after spending almost $65 I'd get at least aluminum containers or those nice japanese black containers. On to the food review, which I'm sure most of you want to read about..... The Seaweed salad was pretty normal, it had 2 pieces of fake crabmeat along side the salad but on the bottom of the container, there was a lot of liquid, which I don't see most of the time. I actually requested them to give me White Peppered Seared Tuna instead of the Peppered Seared Tuna. I liked the wonderful sauce, it was fairly wonderful as most of the other reviews suggested. At $10, I thought the price was a bit high. The Eel Avocado Roll was tasted normal The Delight Salmon Roll (Spicy Salmon, Avocado, Tempura Flake w/ Fresh Salmon & Spicy Sauce) was pretty good, it came in 10 pieces ($16). The big issue was that both of the special rolls weren't cut right, the fish was still attached at the end of each piece of roll so each piece would break apart which was REALLY ANNOYING! I couldn't enjoy my rolls too much since I was trying to cobble the pieces back together to form back humpty dumpty, oops sorry...reading too much children's books. The second special roll, Seared White Tuna Roll (Salmon, Crabmeat, Avocado, Cucumber, Spicy Sauce, Special Sauce w/ Seared White Tuna & Special Sauce) had the same issue of the pieces not cut right, which again was REALLY ANNOYING (sorry for the caps, but you get my point). This roll wasn't as good as the Delight Salmon Roll but overall the roll was fairly good. The sushi pieces were very fresh. I liked my white tuna, nice temp and tasty! I'd say this was the best part of the meal. All in all, would I go back...maybe but I'd probably eat at the restaurant. I hardly have time to eat out so a restaurant would have to make a good first impression. If I go back, I'll update my review. read more

Returned at 7PM on Friday evening for dinner. Our appetizer was served right away, but we then sat there for an hour with no food waiting for three sushi rolls. They were so busy preparing takeout orders, that the in-house diners were made to wait for their dinner. It wouldn't have been so bad but for the air conditioner, which was turned up like a blast chiller. The servers kept our mugs of weak green tea topped up, but offered nothing else except repeated, vague apologies for the delay while we sat there cold and hungry. read more

Actually a very pleasant surprise. I was looking for a take out place, while we were doing some business in the area and came across this place. A little mom and pop shop with a decent service and fresh fish, I mean what can be better. We had ordered a "build your own roll" which was pretty well prepared and not costing an arm and a leg, which was an added bonus. One thing that was kinda problematic was a large tray like dish that held our order for take out. Breaking them down into smaller containers might be better but oh well food was great! read more

It was so flavorful and had an authentic taste. -The food is prepared very quickly and the main chef is very friendly, professional, and excellent at what he does. -The service was great. We decided to give a new sushi spot a try to mix things up and found Ginger sushi. To be honest the low rating is driven by the hour wait we had just to get too pretty simple rules and then the roles weren't even good. My role was practically falling apart it didn't seem to have been tucked in tight enough so there was a gap space between the crab meat filling and answered the outside of the roll oh, so it was a mess falling apart everywhere. we had ordered the two rolls to start us off to gauge how hungry we were but after waiting so long just to get those rolls we immediately asked for the check and figured we'd hop somewhere else. Granted they were busy because it's a Saturday night but still it shouldn't take that long when you have four different people behind the counter in a pretty small place. I moved to the area about a year ago and have been really curious about the sushi spot. Unfortunately, when I finally make it to the spot I go in at 8 o'clock place my order for three simple rolls. I sat and waited for my order to be fulfilled and watched as people came in after me and got their orders handed to them. I thought it was just because they placed online orders before me so I waited once everybody was taken care of and I was the only one left they all look at me trying to figure out which is my order. Come to find out my ticket got lost and they were never making my order so after an hour went by I asked for my money back and was told just wait five minutes you already waited an hour what's another five minutes? After insisting they voided my credit card transaction I requested my receipt and I walked out. So I don't know if the sushi is great I don't know if it's great to eat at all I know is that I waited an hour and didn't get anything to eat. So I went down the street to Wendy's read more

Food is ok. To bad when you call to ask what time they close they lie to you & say we close at 9:00 pm can only order take out. Get there 8:45 pm to pick up my food and the sign say they close at 9:30 pm and people are in there sitting eating. Like really. Not good customer service. They are not the only sushi spot in fanwood. Update: Gave ginger sushi a second try. Walked in on a Thursday evening at 9:00 pm and I was told there closed. But the sign on the door clearly states close at 10:00 pm. I'm done with them. Do not go here. I went to there competition Akai in Westfield on broad st. Five minutes away. OMG Such a better place to eat, the food,service & atmosphere was excellent. So I give them another try. And now they have the damn nerves to charge me extra for the spicy mayo. It a damn condiment. I can make my own spicy mayo. Unbelievable. I spent over $40 in there I should not have to pay for condiments that should come with the meal. Not good. First of all the Food tasted overall very good. The salmon teriyaki was exceptional. The sushi was fresh and made well. The price point was a little higher than usual but not bad. The only bad part is the Service is very poor. It took almost 10-12 minutes to get the menu and then 15 min to come back to take our order. The food took a long time to come out as well. There was only two people at the restaurant! What the hell! The dinning room is very bland and the tables had a film of stickiness so much so that my beverage was getting stuck. They did try to make it up by giving us a very small appetizer dish which helped bandaid the bad service. (I didn't complain to them so I guess the knew). The Mochie ice cream at the end was free which made the poor service more bearable. Not planning to go back anytime soon. read more

This is by far my favorite sushi spot! The fish is always fresh. The selection of sushi varies from salmon, tuna, lobster, crab, eel and so much more. You like sushi but your partner or friend doesn't, no worries! There's plenty of other traditional Asian cuisine dishes. (Although I highly recommend the udon noodle dishes ). My personal favorite roll is the butterfly roll, give it a try if you like mango and salmon. Lastly if the food wasn't enough to make you come here you should come just to become friendly with the staff. The owner is a sweet woman who is always there with a smile and pleasantries. I used to work in a rival sushi restaurant in the area (Nagoya) and even though I was given free meals, I kept (and still do!) going back to Ginger because it is THE best sushi place in the area. It is hard to find truly fresh, melt-in-your-mouth sushi and sashimi in New Jersey. Although this place is slightly more expensive than some of the other joints in the area and although its sushi entrees do not come with soup or salad (a real disappointment because there homemade ginger dressing is AMAZING and NOT ONE BIT WATERY), Ginger merits the splurge. It is such a clean and relaxed place to share a quiet meal with friends. Because it is so small, it is never obnoxiously crowded ...which means intimate service and no waiting around for meals. I've come here well over 20 times and I have yet to have a back experience. Here is a quick story: There used to be a family that came into the old japanese restaurant where I worked. The father of the family was of 100% Japanese descent and while I always spotted him with his family, he never came in alone like his wife and daughter often did. One day while I was picking up an order from Ginger, I spotted him alone at its sushi bar ...he gave me a wink and smiled! From then on, the best sushi in town was "our little secret." When this place uses the term "Wonderful Sauce", they are not messing around. Both Tuna Tataki and a Yellowtail special were perked up by fresh ginger, garlic, and sesame. Fried California Rolls are pan fried instead of deep fried. It gives them a crusty toasty accent like onigiri, while keeping the crab stick and avocado from getting oil soaked like most other versions. I really enjoy Ginger sushi! I've been there many times with just a friend or a large group. The menu works for all of us. I eat cooked dishes, noodle dishes and sushi without raw fish.
