Though we had never visited the Gingerbread Mansion before, we will certainly be back for an encore. My wife and I made in impromptu getaway to Ferndale when the weather in our hometown of Paradise was regrettably hotter than we could bear. We love Ferndale, rich in historical lore and taking you back to a wonderful, bygone era when the world moved at a slower pace and you could live your life full measure. By pure happenstance, I came across the Gingerbread Mansion---we even love the sound of its name---and it took total possession of our hearts. We arrived mid-afternoon on a Wednesday to be greeted by Katie, a sweet and vibrant young lady who took us on a very insightful tour of the mansion. Katie conducted us to every room on all three floors, pointing out the intricate detail and unique style in each room as we proceeded. She proved herself to be the most gracious host, making us feel warm and welcomed. Our stay in the Zapphorah suite was all we could wish for. Fastidiously clean and well appointed. Tall wall papered ceilings, old style fixtures, and a great second story view of the Victorian neighborhood surrounding us. The room was quiet, inviting, and the bed so comfortable as to lull us into gentle repose. A 3-night stay totaled a mere $450. Quite a value, considering the grand style of our surroundings. The patio is a sight to see. Sculptured bushes and brick lined walkways. Assorted statues spotting the grounds, and the crisp, cool air, fanned by ocean breezes, greeting us with soft, soothing scents. Waking up to a different host was interesting. You see, Debra, at least during the week, is the morning and early daytime host, and she plays her role with a bright spirit to gladden the heart. Taste her breakfasts, if you dare to be impressed. Complete morning fare to rival the finest restaurants, including eggs cooked to order, crisp bacon strips, hash brown potatoes cooked to perfection, and buttered toast. Beverages include a host of teas, fresh perked coffee and cream, and orange juice served in classy glass pitchers---and, if your appetite is still wanting, blueberry muffins, bran muffins, and fresh fruit served in profusion. We stayed in this wonderful, cute, warm, cosy and welcoming gem for three nights between Christmas and New Year's Eve and had a magical time in the living rooms and the Imperial Suite. Breakfast in bed, two fire places, amazing furniture, wallpaper, paintings, lace and perfect Christmas decorations. Thank you for your passion in keeping this bed and breakfast in tip top shape and sharing warm and generous hospitality. Beautiful, cozy and most comfortable. We loved our private garden room. The old fashion bath tub was relaxing. Wine, coffee and pastries to greet us and available throughout our stay. Breakfast was made right. The owner Harry made our breakfast welcome very enjoyable. We learned of the owners sheep farm "Lost Ranch", which provides the most delicious lamb sausage for breakfast. Lost Ranch will soon be available for agri-touring stays (for groups of 30 to 40). It is beautifully located near the ocean. We loved our stay at The Gingerbread Mansion. The Gingerbread Mansion was a destination in itself, not just a place to stay! When we arrived, we were greeted and offered a tour of the property, which was a great treat because each room is different; from trompe l'oeill murals, to claw foot tubs and majestic bathrooms, to our room, the hideaway, which was a perfect room for traveling with our teenage girls, as there is a loft with a double bed as well as the queen bed below in the main room. The empire suite was really breathtaking.... At 4pm, tasty canapés, wine and tea were served in the front parlor, which were really good, amd we met some interesting folk and the owner, who was charming and charismatic. What added to our stay was the local theatre, which had a production of Spamalot that night, which was really reasonable priced and only a block from the hotel itself. The show was really fantastic! Breakfast the next morning and good coffee is served until 9:30 am. Delicious! Ferndale is a really cute town, lots of shops, food choices and theatre, so we would highly recommend a long weekend here and a stay at the Gingerbread Mansion. read more

Perish that thought if you are staying at one of the finest bed & breakfasts I've ever stayed at: the Gingerbread Mansion Inn. In this charming town of Ferndale, a burgh filled with old Victorian structures, none is more impressive than the Gingerbread Mansion. My stay could not have been more wonderful, the staff more courteous and attentive, and the accommodations more comfortable and welcoming. They were, in a word, magnificent. The Mansion is beautiful in every respect. The grounds overflow with an explosion of flowers and beautifully maintained hedges with private seating areas throughout. The building itself is an elegant gem of 19th century Victorian styling, recently renovated with upgraded rooms, period-furniture and casual public meeting areas. Best of all, their staff could not be nicer! They delivered on anything they could to make my stay memorable. Fresh-baked cookies and pastries throughout the day, complimentary wine, sherry and port in the library, coffee cakes and hors d'oeuvres in the warm surroundings of the sitting room. I found myself engaged in great conversations with the many guests enjoying their comfortable fireplace library. And breakfast was a fresh gourmet treat, with quiche and sausage entrees straight from the owner's nearby ranch. This is an exceptional bed and breakfast. A peaceful, inviting destination that will be in my travel plans every year. Just a few miles from the ocean and the Redwoods, this is a gem that just won't remain hidden for long. I loved this place! We found this gem last minute on Priceline and were so pleased. Eugenia, the hostess and manager I'd guess, was so welcoming and hospitable. We started with a tour of the whole place, including each of the different and individually decorated rooms. We stayed in the Lilac room, which has a claw foot bathtub and one of the most comfortable beds ever. We headed downstairs at 4pm for afternoon tea, which included a glass of wine, homemade muffins (so good), and a variety of treats to nibble! We stayed and read our books by the fire before falling into conversation with Eugenia and some of the other guests. There was coffee and tea in the hallway when we woke, and we had breakfast downstairs in the gorgeous room. The breakfast was good, and I know they have a new cook, so I expect it will be great before long. read more

This had to be the best B&B I've ever ever been to! Such a shame it closed down, and that Ferndale is closing down altogether. What a magical little town. My husband and I couldn't say enough about the beauty, comfort, service and people at the Gingerbread Mansion Inn! We go to Ferndale every year for vacation if the fall our favorite time of year and it happens to be our anniversary during that time. From the first time we stayed we knew that we never wanted to stay at any other Inn. The rooms are beautiful, the people they have working for them, you couldn't find any people better to help serve your every need. They know customer service like I have never seen before. Normally there is 1 or 2 that are great at customer service, but never before have I found every single one. The breakfasts are always fresh, creative and yummy. The cooks for the afternoon tea, wine and goodies to taste are adventures to taste that at least 1 of which you have never had and will love!!! If you want a place to relax have piece and is beautiful, you honestly could not find any place like it not just here but anywhere. At least not with this staff they take their jobs as if it were not a job but as if they own the business. We just got back a few days ago and we can't wait until next year! We'll be back! read more

My wife and I spent four nights here recently. A friend spent her honeymoon here and insisted that we stay here during our trip. I'm glad we did! Everything about the stay was wonderful. The room was private, comfortable and cozy. The hot water came slowly, but the host explained it to us up front so it was not an unpleasant surprise. The fireplace was a very nice extra. Each breakfast was very good and enjoyable to eat in the sunny breakfast room. It's also nice that they provide a limited kitchen for the guests, so I was able to save and eat leftovers from our dining out, which helped offset the cost. All the staff and the other guests were very friendly. After a couple of nights we were happily chatting with the staff and neighbors like friends, giving and getting suggestions on ways to spend our days. It's obvious The Gingerbread has its regular visitors. They let us see the vacant rooms in the afternoon which was nice and dangerous since it made me want to return and upgrade... The only negatives I can think of are: -weak morning coffee. What gives with the watery brew, guys?? Easy fix! -somewhat thin walls so you can sometimes hear muffled noises of your neighbors. -the location is about an hour drive from the Redwoods National Park, so keep that in mind when planning your activities. Overall it was a GREAT experience -- beyond expectation -- and worth every dollar. I highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys the B&B experience. We will definitely come back! read more

We stayed here for our anniversary last night; we had a very nice time. One reason I have rated this a 4, rather than 5 stars is the lack of acknowledgement of the anniversary, when i made a note of it when I registered. it did not expect anything special, but a mention when we registered would have been nice. We stayed in the Heron Suite; we enjoyed it. It had plenty of room and full bathroom was very nice. It was clean. The bed was just a tiny bit soft for us. My back is always a bit sore, when the bed is too soft; it was this morning. Someone else might have loved the bed. They do a nice wine tasting/tea at 4:00. It was nice they served a local wine, Frog Alley Petite Syrah, as one of the wines. It was very good. Too back they do not ship to Portland or we would have ordered some. They do a combination of sweet and savory that we enjoyed. We took our plates outside in the garden, which was very cool. It was a wonderful interlude. Breakfast was good. We had bacon and a waffle, that was cooked nicely. We also had juice and coffee. I would have liked a bit of fruit with the waffle. However, it was a good breakfast and we had plenty to eat. All in all, this place met our expectations. Our criticisms are generally small. We would stay here again. The innkeeper is very friendly and runs the house well. read more

My husband and I decided to stay here for a birthday/honeymoon trip and we were extremely disappointed. We stayed in the Empire suite and when you first walk in, it's gorgeous. There was a musty smell but I didn't think too much of it considering how old it is. When we started looking closer, we realized how dirty and dusty our room was. There was a pillow on the bed that had a very concerning stain on it. The bed was not very comfortable. Online it had said our room had a smart tv and cable. The tv was so old that nothing on it worked and apparently their cable was down so we were only able to watch ONE channel. We had two fireplaces in our room and one didn't work which no big deal but when I'm paying $475, I expect all the amenities they offered to work. My husband had a spider crawling on him in bed while trying to sleep. Sleep was also nearly impossible with how uncomfortable and HOT the room was. The breakfast the next morning was surprisingly good but very small portions. I expected more for being a bed and breakfast. Overall, we are just very disappointed. We do not feel like we got what we paid for. It was supposed to be a special trip and it wasn't enjoyable. This was the first BnB we have stayed at and it makes us weary of trying others I'm sad to say. The only part we enjoyed in the Empire suite was the claw foot bathtub and shower but that still does not make up for the awful experience we had. read more

What an awesome find! I almost hate to share :-) I had a last minute cancelation of another reservation and Angel the manager went out of her way to take care of me. The room was beautiful! A luxurious bed, lots of room, an electric fireplace and most important peaceful. Ferndale is a nice safe little town. Found an excellent hike up to Russ park and thru an old historic graveyard walking distance from the BB. And... even with the virus they found ways to make it luxurious BB style, lots of treats to select from in the afternoon (and wine), gourmet coffee and yummy breakfast in the morning - the cook is amazing. This is a lovely authentic Victorian home. The staff and ambiance was excellent. We really enjoyed our stay. The one complaint we had is that our room, the gingerbread suite" was on the bottom floor right across from the dining room and it is SUPER noisy! Luckily we were on an east coast schedule but anyone who doesn't want to be woken up between 5:30-6:30 on their vacation may want to ask for another room. Sleeping in is impossible. read more

Somehow we ended up staying here by accident. The Gingerbread Mansion Inn came up in several searches for lodging in Eureka, just under 20 miles away. We didn't realize it wasn't until we were coming up to Eureka and trying to find the address. This puts you in the small, Victorian looking, town of Ferndale California. Which isn't a bad thing, but it definitely limits your options for things like dining and things to do after exhausting the couple of shops that were actually open. Perhaps in the summer months the town is a bit more lively. On the other hand, cattle pasture smell from the nearby country side stopped only a few blocks from the Inn. And I'm enough of a city boy these days to be sensitive to such aromas. Either way, this is among the more unique places I've stayed at. The house is an honest to goodness historical Victorian house built in the late 1800s and expanded into a hospital in the early 1900s. The owners over the years have done a great job keeping it up. Granted, it still has issues. The front door didn't like to open, windows look like they're the original single pane and leak cold air, the noise down the back stairs was annoying. But overall I was impressed by how luxurious the place is! I was not impressed with breakfast though. Not that it was bad, it's just not to my liking. I'm not a fan of quiche or soufflés. The tea selection at the table could have been something other then a box of whatever is carried at the grocery store. The food was quite tasty though and I probably would have enjoyed it a lot more if it had been a bit more egg free. But the service at breakfast, and the service around the house while getting us checked in was superb. Afternoon "Tea", which is actually a few bottles of locally made wines and a handful of snack options, was pretty good and gave us a reason to race back from Eureka. There was also both a bottle of Port and a bottle of brandy hanging around - both were quite excellent and I'd love to know details of their vintages. They have decent discounts for multiple night stays, and also allow you to change rooms from one night to the other. This is a big deal because it allows you to experience the uniqueness of each room. Overall, yeah, great place to stay for a nice laid back vacation. Absolute Perfection! I have stayed at B&Bs through the US and Europe and can't think of a more delightful venue. This place beats out everywhere we have been on the north coastThe attention to design detail is impeccable, the service fantastic and the breakfast and snacks extremely tasty. For those looking for a Mendocino getaway I suggest you head a bit further north to the charming town of Ferndale instead. My 15 year old daughter, my mother, and I recently stayed here. We stayed in the Gingerbread Suite on the first floor because stairs are difficult for my mother. The place was wonderful. It was our first time in a B and B. We arrived in the late afternoon just in time for tea. We were welcomed immediately by a staff member who gave us a tour of the house, explained how things worked, and showed us to our room to drop our things. The room was lovely with a small private patio. The staff member asked when we would like breakfast and if we would like coffee and tea outside of our room before breakfast. The tea was delicious. There was a mix of sweet and savory treats, red and white wines, and a large selection of teas. The staff kept adding items as the tea progressed and there was plenty for everyone. We were joined by other guests and were able to have a nice chat. Breakfast was good and was ready shortly after we arrived in the dining room. For people interested in victorian architecture, like we are, the mansion and the town are a wonderful treat. If you are seeking an exciting night life, I don't know that the town would appeal to you. It seemed like a sleepy little town. We felt safe walking around and really enjoyed everything. My daughter and I look forward to returning and staying in different rooms. Although our room was on the first floor, so close to the public sitting areas, dining room, and kitchen, we never heard a peep that disturbed us and all slept well. Finally, I want to comment on the inn keeper. She was lovely, gracious, and friendly. She spent time with us in the morning before we left, explaining some of the history of the house and the town. There was a change of staff earlier in 2015, and although I did not stay with the old staff, I think the new staff is a great improvement. While the Gingerbread Mansion was certainly charming, it left something to be desired in a B&B experience. The house felt more like a hotel than a B&B. We arrived early for the highly advertised "Afternoon Tea" which consisted of a small amount of food, cold water (that had been once warm I assume for tea), and wine that had already been depleted despite an hour left in the Tea time. The room itself was more than adequate and charming. However, the breakfast the following morning was the worst of our vacation. In our past B&B experiences, the Breakfasts have always been fantastic. Here, we had eggs that had clearly been reheated from being made much earlier that morning and toast so hard that it would crack your teeth. If you're looking for a nice Inn/Hotel feel, this is your place. If you're actually looking for a B&B experience, there were many other options in this wonderful little town! read more

This place is cute! My husband and I spent our wedding night here back in June. The room is beautifully decorated and all the staff we interacted with was super friendly. The hotel is also rumored to be haunted- which was a plus for us haha. The building is old so there are some quirks, which is to be expected but is good to know. For example, there is no door going into the bathroom, just a curtain. Fine if you're comfortable with someone but not my favorite thing. Also, the shower has like 10 shower heads. Definitely a cool concept, but they all won't spray hot/at all at the same time, and we had some trouble figuring out what turned on what. Worth the stay though! read more

What an adorable B and B! It was a pleasure being there from the moment we rang the doorbell. We were checked in enjoyed their afternoon tea right away. Hot water in vintage tea pots and scones, cookies and various other goodies were nibbled in one of their parlor rooms while we relaxed after our five hour drive. The staff was extremely friendly with every interaction and we knew we didn't need to hesitate to ask any questions or find out what local entertainment there was to do. Being mid-December we were in time for the Lighted Tractor Parade and the streets were packed with cars from all over the area for this event. The town of Ferndale was so cutely decorated with Christmas trees (complete with ornaments made from the town's school children) and we enjoyed shopping in the stores and supporting the local business owners. We came to Gingerbread Mansion to celebrate our first anniversary and we were not disappointed. Our highlight of the trip had to be the room, it was decadent. We stayed in the Rose Suite and with its two fireplaces, claw-foot tub, and enormous bed we were ecstatic. They had night turn down service and truffle chocolates await you when you return to your room. I also loved the morning tea that was left around 7:30 am each morning. Breakfast was great too and my husband was over the moon for their stuffed french toast. We were told that the recipe was a secret but we will be trying to recreate it at home. There is nothing else more to say, we loved our time in Ferndale and Gingerbread Mansion made a wonderful and cozy home base for us. We will be back one day! read more

Unlike many West Coast "faux-Victorian" destinations, the village of Ferndale is the real thing. The village is full of real Victorian homes that have been authentically maintained for over a century. The beautiful Gingerbread Mansion keeps up the true spirit of Victorian design in a large 3-story home filled with warmth, meticulous authenticity and amazing attention to detail. Unlike some old homes I have visited, the Gingerbread Mansion was very clean and perfectly maintained. I spent 2 nights in the Lilac Suite, and my parents stayed in the Strawberry Hill Suite. Both suites were elegant and comfortable, overlooking a welcoming private garden. A full breakfast is served each morning, and we were asked in advance if we had any food allergies or special requests. Breakfast was delicious and filling, with delicious locally sourced dishes. Teatime was a special treat, with tea, wine, light desserts and appetizers. A special shout-out to the management from me and my parents: We had reservations for Tuesday and Wednesday nights, but an accident closed Hwy 101 and we were unable to detour around it, making it impossible for us to arrive on Tuesday. I called the hotel that night, and they rearranged our reservation for Wednesday and Thursday instead without any hassle or extra cost. One minor warning. The hotel is definitely haunted, so if you are sensitive to spirits you'll want to be prepared for some unexplainable late-night noises. We told them to settle down and leave us in peace, and they did. read more

My husband and I just spent a night in Ferndale at the Gingerbread Mansion for a little weekend getaway, and I highly recommend it. First of all, the beauty of the mansion and all of the rooms. The whole place was recently renovated, cleaned, restored, etc., and it shows. Everything is in perfect condition -- no seams, no dirt, nothing is worn. I have been in Victorian themed houses/B&Bs that were a little bit kitschy, but this was not. It is elegant and authentic. Gorgeous. We arrived later than the 4:00 PM tea-time, but were still treated to wine, tea, and tiny little snacks, courtesy of the house, in one of their three sitting rooms. Of course it was served on china. The manager was extremely knowledgable and helpful, giving us many suggestions for places to visit. We chose one of their most inexpensive rooms, the Zipporah room (named for a local historical woman leader) and it was lovely. It had a shower instead of a claw-foot tub, which the larger rooms had, but we had not complaints. There was coffee provided in the morning just down the hall. Nice, nice touch. Breakfast was served in the beautiful dining room at a large table with lace table cloth, china, napkins, just as you'd imagine. There was juice and a beautiful coffee cake and fruit salad to start, followed by a kind of french toast in a cup thing, and sausage. Since I'm diabetic I requested eggs instead of french toast, and the cook was happy to scramble some for me. We were seated at a big table with another couple, and there were, perhaps, two other tables in the room, so expect to not necessarily have your own table. This was essentially a perfect experience. The only suggestion I'd make to the management would be to have more tables for two or four in the dining room. I think this is a place attractive to couples on a special trip together who might prefer the privacy. read more

From the moment we pulled up to the beautiful Victorian mansion and caught a glimpse of the picturesque gardens everything was just perfect! The staff were incredibly friendly and helpful, offering us a tour of the expertly restored Victorian home as well as complimentary wine, snacks and afternoon tea upon arrival. Our room was beautifully decorated with the most comfortable bed I have ever had the pleasure of sleeping on while away from home. The enormous spa style bathroom was another plus and turn down service included the most decadent chocolate truffles - pure perfection! Breakfast was served in the charming dining room with several "family style" tables allowing guests to exchange stories of their travels over Belgian waffles and coffee. Most of the house is real clean, but unfortunately our room was not. The bathroom was the worst because the toilet looked like it wasn't cleaned so good and there was hair left in the bath tub. To me it didn't look like they vacuumed the carpet either. When I told one of the workers about this she just kind of laughed it off. It kind of made me mad because I spent alot of money there. I didn't like the breakfast so much either. It just wasn't that good and the coffee had lots of grounds in it. Also. our room was really hot and there are no fans. I don't think I will be going back. read more
