My daughter and I wanted to hike the lost coast and spend some time in the redwood forests of Northern California in the wintertime. We were happy that we chose this beautiful B & B as our launch point for the fun! Gingerbread Mansion has a variety of wonderful suites that allow you to step back into the luxury of the Victorian era. Ferndale has a charming downtown just a block away, nestled in a pastoral North Coast setting. We stayed in the Rose Suite & each of us enjoyed a bubble bath by the gas fireplace in the spacious bathroom after hiking. Breakfast was simple and tasty, and the tea service in the evening was also pleasant. The staff was helpful and made dinner reservations for us since the surrounding restaurant choices are limited. My daughter and I will cherish our memories of this stay and are sure to come again with friends! Tip: be sure to look into off-peak season pricing deals before making reservations. read more

Excellent stay in the Hideaway Suite on the 1st floor. Three of us like to travel together and this is one of the few B&B rooms we have found that has 2 queen size beds, not daybeds or pull-outs for the 3rd person. Nice to have the private balcony too! The bathroom is a little small but special bonus - there is an extra half bath very near in the hallway - so convenient when you could use a little extra space and privacy. The second queen bed is up a cute little set of stairs, comfy but the bedframe is very squeaky and the upstairs room could really use a chest of drawers or some storage. The desk in the photos is actually a sewing machine, so no storage space there either and we just ended up using the chairs and leaving our suitcases open on the floor. Breakfasts were just awesome, from omelettes to ramekins with a rich egg souffle and they could accommodate when our friend had a big too much rich food and just needed something plain. The afternoon wine and nibbles from 4-6 was one of the best, with a sideboard of savory and another sideboard of sweet. Again, extremely accommodating when we trouped in at 5:50 one day they let things sit so we could still have time for a rest and nibble. read more

The Gingerbread Mansion was restored with a lot of love and care. The rooms are lovely, the bed incredibly comfortable, and .... oh so quiet. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. We also ate at Curley's two nights and had no problems. The room was beautiful but the breakfast was not as described on the website. Stayed for two days. Expected hearty breakfast or something special, turned out breakfast so little and no meat at all for either breakfast. Very unprofessional. Came to the table and got a plate with small piece of omelet and some potato and four slices of strawberry on top and that's it. No toast or butter or jam or fruit bowl as shown in the picture and the food was cold. read more

My husband and I took an anniversary trip to Ferndale and stayed in the Fountain Room at the Gingerbread Mansion. Beautifully furnished and very comfortable. Breakfast was delicious! The garden has lots of cozy spots to sit. Robert gave us the lowdown on the different places to eat in town, and lots of fun tidbits about the community. I found this lovely getaway online, and had the most wonderful night with two other friends. This is a secret retreat away from the Bay Area..... The tea/wine with fresh cookies, cheese, lunch meats, sandwiches made our day since we spent about 4 hours getting there. They turned down our beds and left us chocolate truffles - what a treat. The best was yet to come with the fresh baked egg soufle, baked scones, and fresh fruit we received the next morning. The people who ran the B&B were so helpful and friendly. My husband and I just returned from a two-night stay in The Garden Room and it was hard to come home! Our room was both beautiful and comfortable. The staff was perfectly hospitable, helpful and friendly. I could say that my dietary requirements were "met" but that wouldn't be accurate - they were exceeded (I am a vegetarian). Each breakfast was a true treat. I wish that the daily afternoon tea/wine service could have followed us home. We truly felt at home in every way (if "home" was a gorgeous, charming mansion)! Stayed I'm the hidaway room. The bed was so comfy!!! We loved the 1000 TC sheets & down blankets. Felt like home. Was nice & private with no rooms around us. It had a loft with another bed and TV up there. And a fridge outside to keep some local wines in. We definitely plan on coming back! Make sure to have dinner at Hotel Ivanhoe!!! I'm still dreaming about the scampi & NY Marsala. Also the spicy shrimp is to die for!!! I mean it! The breakfast was fabulous! Sausage, veggie scramble with fruits & stuffed french toast & juice. I had visited the Gingerbread Mansion 6 years ago and its uniqueness, service and gourmet breakfasts nagged at me stay there again. BIG MISTAKE!!! Start with a dusty and dirty room equipped with only a king bed when it was advertised that it slept 3 giving the impression of sleeper sofa instead there was a bathtub! No HOT water! Turned on the shower to find I did not need cold water - hot water was warm and half way through soaping up the warm water turned cold! I had to rinse in cold water. Next, only a 1/4 roll of toilet paper and no tissues. No extra roll of paper anywhere! Told the Inn Sitter the next morning at breakfast and you would think she would give me a roll or take it to our room...no again! Had to use napkins from breakfast! She also said that the room I was staying in had a problem with the warm water. Did she offer a solution?? No! Now let's talk about the breakfast - gourmet? No way! A plate with a wheat pancake (mine was raw inside), a cold fried egg that looked like a gummy egg, a half slice of sausage (looked like a hotdog cut lengthwise) and 2 paper thin slices of melon. Toast? Muffin? Sweet roll? No, No and No!! That was it! The second day it was scramble eggs and bacon and the 2 thin slices of melon - so worst in my opinion! I had been looking forward to what my memory recalled me eating which was vanilla yogurt with homemade granola, bowls of fresh cut-up fruit, half of a large croissant French toast topped with shaved almonds and maple syrup, slice of ham with dishes of fresh pastries! Now that was a gourmet breakfast!!! I can honestly say I got a better breakfast at the hotels we stayed in during our trip through Washington and Oregon! What happened to the service and uniqueness of the Gingerbread Mansion?? Where are the owners who catered to their guests?? So if you are looking for a high priced dusty, dirty room with no toilet paper or tissues, cold showers and mediocre breakfasts then this is the B & B for you! I will NEVER stay there again nor will I recommend it! I can only hope that my first trip there will override my memory of my last stay there. read more

Our group were planning to go to red woods since 10 months ago, among all the places in vicinity, we all fell in love with this place and made our reservations more than 6 months ago. Unfortunately, to our great despair we had to cancel because of all the wild fires in northern California. Seta the owner was very courteous and although our group had occupied the whole mansion for 3 nights, and we all paid one night deposit, she agreed to refund us and do not charge us. She showed great understanding and all the staff that I had to talk to before her were all very kind and polite. We are planning again to go in a very near future. read more

Wonderful stay. Beautiful rooms. We stayed in the Strawberry and the Lilac rooms. Vintage antique appointments throughout, just the thought of the sterile 4 star hotel rooms at past hotels made me wonder why I didn't do this years ago when travelling. The staff treat you like royalty and yet part of the family as well. Breakfast is a real classy affair, lots of great food that can border on adventurous. We experienced an earthquake off the coast during our stay and this Old Lady (Circa 1890's) withstood it like a champ. Multiple fireplaces going in multiple gathering rooms on a wet and stormy night were a welcome sight as was the fireplace in our room. Renewed but old radiator heater systems up in every room, warming up in the early am hours when the temperature drops. All the rooms not let out for the night (their doors are usually open) we were welcome to look through. What a gorgeous assortment of styles and Victorian periods. We can't wait to get back and stay in a couple of them. Exquisite is the word that comes to mind when imagining the decor. 10 mins from Eureka. A stay at this Inn is one you won't ever forget. read more

This place is highly overrated! We recently spent two (2) nights and did not enjoy much of either one. The bed was extremely high. The top of the mattress was nearly 3 & 1/2 feet from the floor. It was higher than a hospital bed in full 'up' position. There was one (1) 2-step wooden assist device (steps), however it was very slippery. Unless we both got into, and out of bed, on the same side one of us was stranded! Does this sound safe to anyone of any age? At check-in we were asked what time between 8-10AM we would be having breakfast. Since we were on vacation, and thinking we might want to 'sleep in' we said 9AM. The advertised 'gourmet' breakfasts were anything but gourmet. The first morning we were served biscuits and white gravy (with a few crumbs of sausage in the gravy), a few bites of roasted potatoes, 2 small watermelon wedges and one orange segment. This is not our idea of 'gourmet' but it might have been tastier if it had been served at more than room temperature! Perhaps it was ready (hot and cold as appropriate) at 8AM and we were just an hour late! Our second breakfast can best be described as an attempted savory bread pudding concoction, again served at room temperature with 2 slices of a small tomato, 2-3 thin slices of strawberry and perhaps 10 blueberries, a small wedge of watermelon and a very thin slice of white melon. Again, we felt like we had arrived at the table late. The afternoon 'tea' had a fair amount of choices for snacking. However, it seemed there was a secret as to where the hot water was located (different locations both afternoons) and after making a cup of tea we had no place to put the empty tea bag wrapper OR the used tea bag! Perhaps we were to stuff the wet bag in our pocket and dispose of them in our room? Or, maybe make tea with an invisible tea bag. The carafe, when located, was the smallest I've ever seen and required several refills to accommodate all the guests. Although the building itself is decorated very nicely, the pretentiousness of the place overshadows any wallpaper or antique replicas in it. read more

My boyfriend and I just stayed here for 3 nights and it was incredible. We were originally planning on staying in San Francisco for 2 nights and then driving up to the redwoods and staying in the area for our last night. Once we came across the Gingerbread Mansion and read all of the wonderful reviews we completely changed our plans. We flew into San Fran and drove straight up to Ferndale, Ca and arrived just in time for afternoon Tea and snacks. We were politely greeted and given a tour of the mansion before we went up and made ourselves at home in the Fountain Suite, which was beautiful. Every suite in the Mansion is beautifully decorated with a different theme and color scheme but they all boost gorgeous Victorian style furnishings. Everyone was so genuinely nice. Tea/Coffee was put out on all 3 floors at 7:15 every morning. Breakfast was served between 8-9:30am and was delicious. Tea/Wine and little treats were served everyday at 4 pm. They also have a fridge for those staying that contains complimentary water, and a few different sodas along with wine openers and silverware for use if you store any of our own snacks in there. The garden and balconies were beautiful. And with our window open we listened the Fountain every night before bed. I really could go on and on about the many wonderful things that come with the Gingerbread Mansion but you just have to check it out for yourself! There isn't much in ferndale eating and shopping wise, but you are a 5-20 min drive from several other towns with plenty of things to check out and do. But there are two tavern's down the street and a liquor store. The one Tavern was closed during our stay but the other we do check out one night during our stay and it was great. read more

Was very surprised when I called to book a reservation. They asked if I would have children traveling with us and ages. When I said I have a 10 and 7 year old they then informed me that they do not allow children under the age of 10! I couldn't believe this discrimination. My 7 yr old is better then most teenagers! If they are worried about their antiques as the lady said they probably shouldn't rent to anyone under 40yrs old. read more

My grandparents and great grandparents were dairy farmers in Ferndale. I like to go there every couple of years to reminisce. This trip was my birthday as well. We stayed at the Gingerbread Mansion and our two day stay was great from start to finish. When we walked in and were greeted by the owner, I said may I use your bathroom. He said sure you may. I thought you were here to check in. I was very surprised that he would let us use his bathroom even if we were not going to stay. I'm not used to that hospitality. Our room was beautiful. The 4-6 pm refreshment time was very good and breakfast was special as well. My favorite part was sitting in the parlor and visiting with other guests. Overall friendly, clean and a real break from life's faster pace. We will definitely return. read more

We really didn't want to leave! We stayed 2 nights in the Fountain Suite & had the best time. Kait, the Innkeeper, is a wonderful cook & hostess. She is friendly, professional, warm & recommends great places to eat dinner within walking distance. We were welcomed by Kait with the Tea & Wine service, which also included her homemade chicken soup, perfect on the rainy day, + a delightful platter of cheese, salami & crackers. Our Suite was perfect, as was each room in the Mansion. Kait is a wonderful cook & we asked for seconds at both breakfasts we enjoyed. Honestly, our visit couldn't have been better! We highly recommend the Mansion & Kait, the fantastic Innkeeper & her crew! We're going back ASAP :) read more

We arrived on 6/5/14 for my husband's B.D. We really enjoyed every minute of our stay. The charming room, friendly staff, delicious breakfast and afternoon Tea/Wine made everything so unforgettable. The house itself is Victorian style and takes you back to that era. The city is nice and we enjoyed the sunset by the beach that is only 10 minutes' drive from there. Watch the dining recommendations!! We really liked this B&B overall and everything was beautiful. However watch the inn keeper's recommendations on restaurants. Upon our arrival at The Gingerbread Mansion 7/14/14, the inn keeper recommended Curly's as a place to have dinner - we walked by and lots of locals were in there and it looked good. The waitress told us the special was grilled cod with mango salsa, so my partner ordered that. He got the worst case of food poisoning in his LIFE and is still not over it almost a week later. It almost ruined our trip and we totally missed the redwoods as he was puking out the side of the car. I really thought we would have to go to the ER but he seems to be getting better. This restaurant is to be avoided at all costs. The B&B was gorgeous tho and everyone was nice - the only other thing was there was only one choice for breakfast - a sticky sweet Nutella french toast with bananas - we (the two of us that weren't dead from for poisoning the night before), didn't realize it had Nutella and there was syrup provided so we dumped the syrup too - it added up to a sugar coma and early afternoon crash. read more

We stayed here over the Memorial Day weekend and highly recommend this B & B. It is a beautiful hotel with luxurious rooms. We stayed in the Garden Room with our own little patio. The breakfast was great. Stay in Ferndale, it's much nicer then Eureka or other surrounding areas. read more

My partner and I had a wonderful weekend getaway here. We stayed in the Lilac room, which has a lovely cozy bed and clawfoot bathtub. Everything was beautifully decorated and showed great attention to detail. Wine and tea in the evenings were splendid, and breakfast was hearty and delicious. We especially appreciated how attentive the hosts were in making accommodations for scent and allergy issues -- this made it possible for us to really relax and have fun. Everything about this place seemed "quirky" to us. Check-in, check-out, breakfast, and the room itself were all a bit odd, goofy, etc. And it was quite expensive, being as it was the nicest place to stay in the area, although that's not saying much, and we spent hours researching online. Not sure why it has a four diamond rating from AAA. Maybe it just wasn't our style, but it would be hard to recommend this place to friends. read more

4.5 stars...We stayed here recently for one night while visiting the Redwood Forests. Searched on line to find a B&B that was centrally located. Saw the picture of the inn and read the reviews and decided to book. Glad we did. The inn is very attractive and well managed, the rooms are nicely decorated (looks just like the pictures on their website, but the room we stayed in was too warm at night) and the grounds are nicely landscaped. Linda who manages the inn was very welcoming. The afternoon tea was better than expected...nice selection of wines and hors d'oeuvres. The breakfast was very good, especially the muffin! Met some very friendly guests while staying there. Thanks for making our stay very enjoyable! read more

Beautiful Inn - decor is so detailed and perfect to the era (extreme attention by the owner given to this area), food, personnel and wonderful amenities especially the pillow soft mattresses and down comforters. My wife and I stayed at the Gingerbread Mansion for our 10th anniversary from July 22-25. This place was amazing from the minute we stepped in the door. We were immediately greeted and asked to have seat in the gold parlor. The cheerful hostess went over our reservation and gave us a tour of the 4 parlors available for us to relax in. She then took our breakfast time and how we would like our coffee prepared in the morning. We stayed in the Strawberry Hill room which was amazing and so clean and comfortable. Anna makes the best iced lemon gingerbread cookies in the world. Anna was always smiling and such a pleasure to be around at breakfast. Anna was also extremely helpful in acquiring the most amazing peach roses for my wife and even packed them up for us when we left. Kate mad us an amazing breakfast every morning and her suggestion to eat a Eel River Brewing was spot on. Finally, Karen took care of wine and snacks each night and was always checking to make sure that we were happy and fed. Turn down service was amazing and the chocolates were to die for! This was truly one of the best places we have ever stayed and thanks to the staff at the Gingerbread Mansion, it was an amazing anniversary! read more
