I'm spending a little more time in the Sellwood area ...and any local Sellwood resident knows the restaurant bar very well...an institution for years But this was my first visit...it was on a whim ...isn't that the best way? The bar no doubt an original reminds of My Brothers Bar in Denver..that kind of old world woodworking craftsmanship is rare in any city today...I love the vibe of the bar area...wam, inviting...and one non HD flatscreen...the bar choices typical With a nice varietty of draft beer choices...full bar etc... We decided to share a Caesar Salad because I was told it is simply the best Caesar Salad you will ever have...order the Caesar for 2... I was gobsmacked! This Caesar is unbeatable just tangy enough...just enough anchovie and irresistibly creamy. ...awesome I'll expand my menu choices and do a follow up at a later date. Ive been here a number of times, and its just OK. The bread and the oil are probably the best things, and the bar is neat to sit at. I would never consider this for dinner though. It has the highest prices by far of any italian restaurant in portland, and the portions are not large. Better bang for your buck at olive garden, ernestos, or nonna emilia's. That and they aren't open for lunch either. I spent over 40.00 just for myself for dinner at the bar before. Even with one glass of wine, thats too high. I was craving Italian food so I headed down the street to Gino's. I was in the mood for some sausage and noodles, so when I saw they had a dish called "Sausage Pasta" I knew it was meant to be. When my food arrive all I can say is I was ready to get out of the restaurant. It was so bland. If a simple bell pepper or even some ground pepper was added then I think this meal would have been bearable. My other half ordered some ravioli. My first thought when tasting it was tomato sauce out of a tin can, this is not a thought one should be having at an Italian restaurant! The atmosphere there was dark and quiet. I would recommend some up beat music that is playing a bit louder. Over all I was depressed by the experience. Rebecca and I took my Mother here recently. She uses a walker to get around. They were very sensitive to her needs; they even spoke up enough so they could hear. My Mother ordered mussels. She is a light eater; however, she loved them so much she ate every bit. Yes, they were very good. Rebecca and I each had a great pasta dish and split a wonderful salad. I like their wine list. Ok, so this was my first venture into Gino's. It was a going away/birthday party combo, party of 10. Let me start off with the bad- depending on how busy they are, parties of 9 or more may have to choose from the Chef selected "Family style " menu of the day. Lucky for us they were not busy and we could order off the menu. The house specials are great. I went with a shared order of Cioppino and had the dry aged Delmonico steak (the porterhouse was sold out). The steak, although cooked to perfection, was a little disappointing. Not ring side or El Gaucho quality, more on par with Ruth Chris on a good day. Now the Cioppino on the other hand.......I have yet to have better in town. Both the waiter and waitress were above par. So Gino's Restaurant has excellent food -- but a weird kind of setup. You actually enter the restaurant through the Leipzig Tavern. They have a main dining room as well as booths & tables along the walls in the "bar" area and you can sit at the bar for dinner as well. Mostly I'm easily confused by places with more than one name -- but it doesn't really take MUCH to confuse me in general so don't let that deter you. Inside the restaurant is warm and cozy. They print their menus daily -- which I always find endearing. The service is excellent -- the staff is pleasant and helpful and willingly offer recommendations when asked. The food is delectible ... there are quite a few vegetarian options as well as fish and the usual meaty fare. Overall -- good stuff!! I recommend going. It's usually pretty busy -- especially on nice days (there's outside seating) and weekends -- but on a Monday or Tuesday the crowd thins a bit. Bon Appetito! read more

I have been coming to Gino's for over 20 years and have loved every visit. I think I will not go again. The host was some "too busy to look at you" rude guy barking out demands to customers waiting to get into the wonderful friendly restaurant we had grown so used to. We were then taken to a table by an okay waiter who was all stressed out. More art on the walls, lots of hustle and bustle and not a lot of happy working faces any more. The Caesar salad.....the wonderful home made dressing we had enjoyed for years just was not as good, something was missing....lemon for one, there was none. Cheese pre grated into crumbles, not nice little strings, not much anchovie either. I hate when a restaurant does this. Mussles were good but not as plentiful....maybe 30% fewer and the puttanesca was missing something, had very few olives. The love and pride in the food is gone. Recipes have been streamlined for ease of cooking which always loses something in the translation. There was a screaming baby 10 feet away that I hardley heard for the music cranked up, the parents were leaving with the baby which was nice but not really necessary due to noise beyond the baby's loudest range. Our waiter was proud to tell us that the place had been bought out by Gino, the original owners son. That explains it. Making a great restaurant is not what he thinks it is. Mark you need to get back in there for awhile. I do not mind change but when wonderful things are lost that is not a good thing. I hate writing this. Terrible service with average food. Group of three out of town looking for good Italian food nearby. My husband and his teammate were running the next day in a big track event so just wanted some simple pasta and no alcohol. You could tell they server was peeved we weren't drinking and not ordering a whole lot, Seems like he decided to ignore us the rest of the night. Watched several tables get seated after us, get their food and was catered to but not us. Not once did we get any advice on the menu, ask how we were doing, or how our food was. Not to mention we were seated right in the middle of the room- how can you keep walking past us and not helping? It was like we were invisible, it was laughable how little we were helped. Food was pretty average. Got the grandma jean's pasta we saw everyone getting, very heavy on the rosemary. Tasted like something I would throw together at home when I had a bunch of random stuff in the fridge to get rid of. Wasn't terrible, but nothing special. We were pretty ready to get out as fast as possible, especially since we had a race the next day. We debated even walking out and not paying because we were convinced no one would notice us. So beware, if you don't plan on spending a lot of money at their establishment they will not pay any attention to you. read more

Looking for a nice dinner in Portland my friend and I decided to scour yelp for a saucy recommendation. Luckily we came to Gino's. The atmosphere of the restaurant was great. It's a little confusing at first because you have to go to the bar to get to the hostess stand. Once there we were immediately sat at a cozy little table in the non-smoking bar area. The ambience is what you would expect at an italian restaurant, the tables were lit with little candles, and the lights were dim. Giacoma would go nuts in this place. We started off with two very nice glasses of red wine. I got the pinot noir and enjoyed it very much. After a brief time my entree, a salmon dish, was served. Although I don't remember any particulars of the dish (except the salmon was cooked medium) I do remember that it was unbelievable. In fact, it was so good that I ate almost all of it before my friends food arrived! While this shows my complete lack of manners, it also shows that the restaurant committed one of my biggest pet peeves. All food, especially for a two top, should be served at the same time! After the meal we were offered dessert and asked if we wanted another glass of wine. It's tough to not recommend Gino's to any other out of towners. The food is good and the setting is romantic. Sellwood is a nice quant part of the town and Gino's is its magnum opus. read more

If you had asked me 10 years ago if I liked Italian food I would have cringed while visualizing the Old Spaghetti Factory and answered "No Thanks!" That was before I discovered Gino's. It's not much to look at from the outside but that's part of its charm. When you walk past the bar its clear the well oiled wood has been supporting elbows for many decades. Quality woodwork aside, the entryway is kind of strange. You que up on the other side of the bar and the wait can be a bit long but once you hit the dinning room it's well worth it. The high ceilings, old artwork and classic booths really give the vibe that you are eating in a place that's been serving food for longer than most of us have been alive. It can be a pain in the ass to get your name on the list when you first walk in but again, once you are seated the service has always been attentive without being cloying. They also have a casual vibe. I've walked in on a whim before in a T-shirt and shorts and felt completely welcome. Of course, all of this would be for naught if the food didn't deliver. I'm a big fan of the caesar salad (for two), as well as several of the pasta dishes and the clams. My favorite however is the rack of lamb. It's not a particularly large portion but it is by far the best grilled lamb I've ever had. Unfortunately this isn't a regular option on the menu but if you see it I'd recommend trying it even if you don't think you like lamb (remember how I used to not like Italian food?). Gino's isn't necessarily cheap but it's reasonable given the quality, and the pricing is comparable to what you'll find at Ned Ludd's and Laurelhurst Market. I think the caesar salad for two option is a good value. Most of the meat options are between $24 and $30 with several other options falling in the $20 range. The fact that I LOVE Gino's says a lot about this place since my memories of Gino's are completely tarnished by a really bad date with my ex-boyfriend who I pretty much...well...would like to erase. Just so you completely understand how much I abhor this man, please note that my claws just Freddy Kruger'd and I'm hissing right now... Anyhoo, back to my review. Gino's is a classic Italian place that looks like it could be right out of one of the Godfather movies. The lighting is dim, but not so dark that you feel like you are in a cave. The decor is classic Italian with dark wood tables and intimate booths for cuddling (unless you happen to be on a date with a dark haired man suffering from a bad case of halitosis and clinical depression you may want to skip the booth and stick with the tables). As my dinner companions and I sat around the table for our third trip to Gino's in three weeks we each pondered, "Could this be my favorite restaurant in Portland?" The answer was a resounding yes, and here's why: The food is reliably great (except for the raviolis, those sucked--twice). Best steak under $30 in town. Period. The Grandma Jean's has the most comforting combo of pasta, spices and delicious stewed beef. The Ensalada Mista has an awesome assortment of steamed veggies on it, and one order was enough to serve three of us (two of whom were hungry guys). The wine selection is fantastic--they don't have the most extensive list, but they really know how to pick the best vintages from the wineries they order from and it shows. The service is a little slow sometimes, but friendly all the same. They serve kick-ass mashed potatoes. The bread is garlicky and buttery and delicious. The coconut cream pie is amazing. The tiramisu is scrumptious, and non-rummy (probably not so scrumptious if you like your tiramisu on the boozy side). The cappuccino is like a heavenly taste of Italy. BAM! Counter Attack to crappy reviews! Keep reading: Gino's is good, but it isn't the olive garden. I've had the Rav's so many times that I know which ones are in season. Everything on the menu is good, but you need to know that this is traditional Italian food. It's also owned by an incredible husband and wife team and once you get to know them the place feels like home. Even if you don't know them, Marc and Deb Accuardi make every effort to make you feel welcome. They can be seen cooking, stopping by tables to check on people, and maing the place hum. The food shows, they've got the best ceasar salad I've ever tasted. A real Chippiono stew, great steaks, and an awesome red sauce with penne called Grandma Jeans. It's topped with two ribs, and it's a homemade tomato sauce. If you don't believe that you can't sit at the bar and watch them make it. One of their biggest comments is always service, but I've always had a pleasant experience. They don't do well with complaints, and if you want someone to stop by your table every five seconds than by all means Olive Garden is the place for you. At any time you can sit at the beautiful bar, meet strangers, talk with a great bartender and feel like you're in the community. Fantastic desserts, it's just an all around package. Gino's founders also started Nostrana, which by the way Marc Accuardi personally designed the interior. Both of which have been voted top Italian restaurants in the city by several publications and they deserve it. One caveat, is that when they get busy there can be an hour wait like you find at places like Apizza Scholls. A mark of good food if you ask me, sorry for my adamant attitude, but the food is so good at Gino's we even had our wedding reception there. GIno's is not really my style, but I did have a pretty decent meal there when friends insisted we go. It has an old saloon vibe, with some booths, a long bar, and large dining room. it's got character, for sure. The caesar salad was quite delicious, with perfectly crisp hearts of romaine, a fishy dressing, and greasy croutons (I hate it when the croutons are dry in a salad). I had the sausage on polenta for dinner, which came out looking totally different than I expected. Instead of a bowl of creamy polenta with chunks of sausage on top, this was a block of polenta with a round piece of sausage on top that looked like hamburger patty, with a coating of parmesan cheese. Despite the odd presentation, it was actually quite delicious, and I ate the leftovers for breakfast the next day. The wine list is pretty authentic Italian varietals, and the waiter knew his stuff about the wines. If only the bus boy wasn't such a brat. Our waiter was fantastic though. If I lived on the east side of Portland, I suppose this would be an okay spot for a hearty, no-frills Americanized-Italian meal, especially if I were craving a sinful caesar salad. Garlic is the reigning power at this restaurant! All hail! They are well-known for their superb caesar salad. It can be prepared for 1, 2, 4, 6, or 8 people. It's a strong flavor and will not wait patiently to be noticed. This is a bold caesar salad that will linger until the next course. We had the Grandma Jean's Pasta and it was awesome! The variety of meats do not overpower each other at all. They work together in mouth-watering awesomeness. The service was quick and attentive. The deep booths, high ceilings and vintage posters made our simple dinner feel more like a romantic date. Great place for a family dinner or a romantic date. Nothing like a cozy Italian joint This place so reminds me of my favorite Italian place in Spokane, where I grew up. It ironically shares the same name with the same candlelit environment and friendly waiters. What's very different, though, is the amazing Caesar salad. I'm always on the look out for the best salads in Portland, and I'd say this rates amongst my two favorites. It's extremely creamy and garlicky, which is a one-two punch for my taste buds. I heard the mussels were good, so we split those for an appetizer. Needless to say that between the salad and the mussels, I was pretty much stuffed by the time my entree came. I ordered a cheese/meat ravioli, which tasted great the next day for lunch. If you like a cozy, old-fashioned Italian restaurant, than this is your place. I have had a cauliflower pasta with toasted hazelnuts, my tried & true puttanesca and an awesome orecchiette with peas that have knocked my socks off. The salad with seasonal veg is always a treat. I never would have thought about this place, had my realtor not suggested it in passing (a favorite of her's). My family decided to go back to Sellwood to look at the house I looked at earlier, and we decided to check Gino's out after the drive by. It made our drive to Sellwood worthwhile, even if I don't buy the house. We ordered Cesaer salads for the three of us (an order for two split three ways was quite enough) and then an order of clams and an order of mussels, with yummy bread to sop up the great broth. I'm thinking I should develop a Yelp list for places that serve great mussels in Portland. Gino's would be number 1. It was all wonderful - the perfect "end of holiday weekend" meal. Others have written about the atmosphere (A+), and the service (A+ again), so I won't dwell - or disagree. The food was perfect. So was the Tiramisu (which I'm regretting now, but only for the extra calories). Now we'll be more willing to go out of our way to go back to Sellwood and Ginos. Tomato soup and bread were great, porterhouse bland, for an aged steak it was forgettable, Mashed potatoes were also flavorless and undercooked. House salad was ok, nothing that you can not find anywhere else. we also tried the pan fried chicken, but sadly it was also lacking Italian flavor. I got a personal recommendation for this restaurant over Acena, but except for the tomato soup and the bread , the rest of plates we tried were bland, no Italian flavor at all. Last night was my first dining experience at Gino's. I ordered Grandma Jean's pasta with spaghetti noodles rather than Penne. It was hands down one of the best spaghetti dishes I've ever had! The Caesar salad was out of this world, as well. The orders are more than generous, so expect a lunch or two from left overs, at least from the pasta dishes. If I were Italian, and had a grandma, who cooked amazing pasta, I'd swear she was cooking in the kitchen at Gino's!! The first time I went I had a Delmonico steak which was enormous and cooked slightly to well for my taste. Still delicious though.... Huge steak and really expensive. $30 bones to be exact. The lady had the grandma nana plate (or something sounding like this). That was awesome and quite a substantial dish. The little guy had a little plate full of cheese, apples, and other fun kiddie items brought to us upon our arrival. We hadn't ordered it and didn't have to pay a dime for it. This managed to calm his hungry and grouchy nerves down to a suitable level. Gino's is my neighborhood spot. I love it! It is welcoming and mellow just like the neighborhood(Sellwood.) The food is amazing and the wine selection is top notch. Portion sizes are perfect as well. We started with a Caprese salad: organic heirloom tomatoes with homemade mozzarella, basal, chunky salt, olive oil, pepper: perfection. I ordered ravioli cheese pasta with cherry tomatoes and parmesean cheese. Husband ordered duck with faro. He said it was the best duck he ever had (beating out a previous favorite in LA area). I don't like duck and it even smelled good to me. I live in the neighborhood and wanted to support Gino's now that they're open again. I ordered a Cesar Salad for two for pick up. I waited at the pick up door for quite awhile before anyone even acknowledged my presence. Got home and was surprised to see a much smaller amount of salad than was normal (about half a box). When I called to ask what had happened the guy said sorry it wasn't what I expected. I worked in restaurants for years and never had so little motivation. I know during these difficult times everyone is stressed, but I just ended up feeling ripped off. After tip, I just spent $20 on a salad for one. Super bummed. read more

I came here on a weekend trip to Portland with a friend, who had eaten here before. Just 2 days before, actually, it was so good she wanted to come back! This was the best Italian food I've had since I moved away from North Providence 30 years ago. I grew up in an Italian neighborhood, filled with seriously authentic, real Italian food cooked by grandmas who still spoke Italian to their families. I ordered the sausage and peppers over rigatoni. The portion was huge. The pasta was cooked to perfection. Some reviewers have complained that the pasta wasn't homemade. So? A good boxed pasta cooked the right way is sometimes better than homemade. The sauce was just beyond belief yummy. It had a very slight red pepper spiciness, just enough to let me know it was there. It stuck to the pasta, had big chunks of sausage, and strips of thin multi-colored sweet peppers. It came with buttery garlic toast. I also ordered the green salad. What a surprise when it was delivered to the table with a ring of roasted vegetables surrounding the sweet greens. My friend and I could not get over that nice touch, which beckoned back to an antipasto-type plate. Turnips, potatoes, and carrots roasted to perfection alongside some really fresh, bright green mesclun and raw veggies. The salad dressing was delicious (balsamic). We were too full for dessert (and half of my food was boxed up, it was such a large portion) - but I really wanted to try something, so I ordered the chocolate walnut tart to go. Wow. It was our treat later that evening, and it was perfect. We went with a 10 month old baby, who was served her own little plate of tiny sliced apples, raisins, cheese and bread before we even ordered. She also ate off our adult dinner plates and loved my pasta dish as much as me. My friend ordered the mushroom farro. I do not like mushrooms, but I tried it and I liked it! The waitress was friendly and on top of it. Our baby dining companion made a big old mess on the floor and they didn't seem to care, or show any bad attitude. Other waiters and waitresses gave her attention when they passed by. Very friendly staff. Yea, so when I go back to Portland, I will return to Gino's! I have been here several times. It is a real go-to when we want that warm, rich, joy of Italian wine and food. Only downside? They can be really, really slow sometimes. Other than that, enjoy the stay! Hang out at the beautiful bar, enjoy a drink and some of the marvelous pasta. When I think of Gino's I think of sitting at the nice big old school bar with an oversized glass of red wine. I think of a cozy neighborhood bar that just happens to have some good food. It fits the bill for a casual but romantic date night, or as a place to take an out of town parental unit who's not feeling particularly adventurous. The sizable wine list has something for everyone, including those on a budget, with a good sized under $30 bottle list. There's a nice tap selection featuring plenty of local micro brews in addition to a full bar. Getting happy here is not a problem. And full? Also not a problem. My former favorite, the cioppino, has given way to the glorious steak. Recently the boy and I have taken to splitting a pasta and steak, and I'm pretty sure that's the way to go. The pasta is usually vegetarian and creamy and delicious while the steak is huge and meaty and flavorful, cooked to perfection. The seafood pastas are quite good too, but don't do the trick when you're craving a good pasta dish. The broth in the cioppino though, is warm and comforting. This is one of, if not the, best and most authentic Italian restaurant in Portland. It's menu is simple, rustic Italian that relies on superb ingredients. Its Pork Chops are to die for. I highly recommend the grandma Jean's mmmm mmmm, which is one of the things that doesn't change on the menu. I really appreciate how the chefs don't overwhelm the delicate pasta with sauce, but rather ensures a perfect ratio between the two. Oh, and if you like caesar salad, this is the place for you. I can't forget to mention the fresh clams and mussels! So so goood! Aside from the excellent food, Ginos has wonderful ambiance, making it the perfect place to celebrate a special occasion or experience a night out on the town. Its a pretty kid friendly restaurant too, we've had our kids there many times and the wait staff brings out a plate of fruit cheese and bread for them and makes them feel welcome. Great, Awesome, Superb! Love the late night menu, and have been going for years. ON A BAD NOTE: They close at 9pm on Sundays and the website says 10. When I asked why not update the website I was told "don't use the website" ??? I made a trip from NE PDX to come here only to be denied b/c I didn't know "winter hours" were in effect. Hmm. Gino's is one of my favorite restaurants in Portland, but definitely only when it is cooler out. The heat in the restaurant during my last visit was unbearable and made it pretty difficult to enjoy. None of the ceiling fans were running, which could've helped quite a bit. With that being said, the food is always amazing. The Caesar salad is always a must, as well as the Grandma Jean's. The Delmonico ribeye is also to die for. Prices are extremely reasonable, considering the portion sizes. You can easily get two meals out of the entrees. Gino's wine list is also pretty incredible, especially for Italian wine lovers. You can find some older vintage gems for some pretty remarkable prices. All in all, food is awesome, but the heat needs to be managed. read more

A little pricey but the Aperol Spritz I had was awesome! A native Italian may be wondering where the chips are but the drink was good and the atmosphere was cozy, old world style. read more

I also dont understand the hype. I have ate at many Italian spots (mainly SF and Seattle) Outside of the old Davinci's (before the owner sold) This place is very average I guess their drinks are strong so they can fool you that the food is good. It's very average tasting and portions are good. It's basically good for the average joe who wants a good deal with ok food. This place can't hold a candle to 3 doors down. Food or Drinks. And if your going for portions, go hit the claim jumper Gino's is very average italian food. read more
