This was an old favorite of mine. Four of us went out for a birthday celebration tonight. At 7:45 they were out of the salmon, a crab pasta dish, and an appetizer. Two of us had steaks - both pronounced EXCELLENT - I hope so, at $30 a pop. Judy, our server, seemed to have better things to do. A second drink was forever in coming, and by the time we would have ordered desserts, it took so long for her to return (the house was nearly empty, since it was 9:30) we weren't going to spend another dime. I'd heard some great things about Gino's, so when a friend suggested it as a spot for a party of 10 I was looking forward to trying it. When we arrived, they were ready for us and seated us quickly. For a party of 10 they had pushed together 2 two-topper tables placing four people on each side and 2 people at either end. It was a tight fit, but they were very gracious about adding another table making us much more comfortable. Water, drinks and food ordering happened in a timely fashion and things were off to a good start. I ordered the cioppino, my boyfriend ordered cheese raviolis and other dishes at the table included one of the dry aged steaks, salmon, and other pasta dishes. My cioppino was pretty good, but I've had better. I did like that it wasn't super heavy and oily. The raviolis were reported as not being that great, and the dry aged steak was reported as not tasting dry aged, but being okay. I was disappointed given I'd been told how good the food at Gino's is. Also, the menu prices reflect a high standard of food - it's not an inexpensive Italian restaurant. I didn't feel the quality of food reflected the menu prices at all. I would have probably given 3 stars based on just that, but as we continued eating, the service became horrible and rude. As I was finishing up the last few bites of my food I put my fork and spoon down to pause and talk. The waitress was on me within seconds offering to clear my plate. I really didn't need to eat more, so I said ok. Looking around I saw that other people at my table were still eating. I find it rude and unprofessional when plates are cleared before everyone at the table is finished eating. It's not a very classy thing to do. I noticed that the waitress cleared other plates within seconds of a pause as well. Looking around the restaurant had cleared out quite a bit so it wasn't that it was busy and they were rushing us, I think this is just the way it is. I felt rushed, and didn't get to relax or enjoy myself. I don't remember being offered a dessert menu, just an offer for a check. I was ready to get out of there, so I asked for my and my boyfriend's check, and the waitress was fine with splitting it, which was nice. When the bill was brought, she was also kind enough to include gratuity with the bill, which I understand is standard at most restaurant with parties of 6 or more - but I did not feel my experience warranted a 20% gratuity, which was the amount added in. Blech. Will never go back to Gino's. There are some great Italian restaurants in Portland and I'd rather spend my time and money at places like La Buca, Nostrana, etc etc. Two stars and two thumbs down. read more

I just finished a very satisfying and delicious meal at Gino's. I sat at the bar, as I was alone, and it was kind of a nice change from the usual table service, etc. Excellent, prompt service right from the start. I asked for a glass of Merlot and the gentleman behind the bar recommended Bordeaux, which was superb. I ordered a Caesar salad and the veggie pasta - both great and both very generous in terms of portions. The salad was cold and tasty (hate lukewarm salad) and the pasta was hot, hot, hot! Perfect. Open for brunch, no wait. Flavors were great, really enjoyed the mushroom scramble. But the steak, seemed far less than the 6oz and really over cooked. The potatoes tasted great, but were cold. read more

We loved this place. Got here early. Great service. Got busy pretty quick. We ordered clams to start, they were perfect and the portion was substantial. I wondered the lamb chops, cooked perfectly and delicious. The sides, garlic mashed potatoes and sautéed veggies were perfect. My wife ordered a clam pasta Vongole that was huge and delicious. I've been coming to Gino's for years. It was a favorite spot for a long time. If they are having a good night, the food is great. Unfortunately, it seems now that half the time I go, they run out of one or two main menu items by 7pm on any given night. Sometimes the side of vegetables ends up being cabbage onions and carrots so you can tell that they ran out of ingredients. For the price you pay to eat here, that just turns me off from wanting to come back. read more

I remember when I was young and stupid hating Gino's because of silly reasons like not liking pasta and other adult foods. Now, it is one of my favorite places to eat in the Sellwood area. It has withstood the test of time, always been there and I doubt it going away anytime soon. First, the place is interesting in a charming peculiar way. It feels like a good complement to the antique stores nearby with a old but warm feel to it. The big winner for me is the their Caesar salad that has a wonderful zesty kick to it that has spoiled me eversince. Their salmon dijon is great for those who want to be different and not follow the Italian theme. Their large wine selection, seafood, meats, and pasta is a great choice for a wide range of tastes except myopic children like I was 15 years ago. read more

We loved it! The atmosphere is casual, warm and inviting. Not only was the food yummy and flavorful, especially the Grandma Jean's pasta but the service was outstanding. We had appetizers, salads, and entrees- everything was excellent! Our server recommended the Panna Cotta for dessert but we were all too full to partake. I visited Gino's on a Saturday night with two friends. There was absolutely no wait and the service was very quick. We were pleasantly surprised by this hidden gem. It had amazing ambiance with a separate darker, but cozy European style bar and a very spacious main dining room. Our waitress was very personable and checked in with us appropriately. I had Grandma Jean's Pasta which was very large and tasted great. I also shared a Caeser salad with my friends which was AMAZING. Honestly, the best Caeser I've ever had. We enjoy our visits here, however we know it sometimes comes with a little frustration. On the night of our visit, it seemed that there was only one server with a couple helpers just trying to keep up with the orders both inside as well as all the tables outside. There were no tables available outside when we arrived so we sat inside. We received our first drinks quickly and placed our food order, but it took a while to get our servers attention for another round of drinks, and by that time the salad server was stoicly serving our salads only to quickly disappear without a word, the same way she arrived. After the salads were eaten, and still without a second round of drinks, we waited for well over "the acceptable" amount of time before receiving our meals. The food was delicious, perfectly cooked, and generous portions. So much so that we had to say 'no' to the dessert list. Not a horrible evening; if we had been seated outside we'd probably have been better off. Well be back. read more

An excellent dinner. We had Caesar Salad for 6 at $25.95 - one of best I have ever eaten, requested anchovies on the side and bread with olives. Our guests ordered the ravioli stuffed with goat cheese tossed with red pepper smoke paprika and tomato sauce, parmesan and reported it was very good. We split a cioppino which was delicious, served over pasta and parmesan cheese. Wine list is extensive, opted for the Carlton Pinot Noir, smooth and tasty. Good atmosphere and good service in our neighborhood of Sellwood - can't wait to return!! read more

Walking in off the street and into the bar area you'd suspect this place to be nothing more than a dive with decent bar food. By it's oh so much more. The staff is friendly. The device is great. And... The Nonna Jean's is unbelievably delicious. My boyfriend, however, ordered a steak Medium Rare and it came out literally raw and cold in the center. He's not the kind of person to complain so he just dealt with it and ate the edges only. I'm not as forgiving, which is why they get a 4 star instead of 5 (if I could, I'd give 3.5). read more

Gino's has great food and pretty nice staff. I had the clams and grandmas pasta on the late night menu and it was fabulous. I'm a big fan of this place. I usually order their Grandma's Jeans pasta dish which is a meat lovers pasta in a red sauce and their chiopino (which is the best I've had). They're Caesar salad is one you can split. It has a strong garlic taste, but I like that. Not like any other Caesar salad I've had. Great wine list and about 10 good, local micros on tap. Went to Gino's on a whim. Checked out the antique stores one day and came across the place. Very glad I decided to come back for dinner. We had the salmon and Grandma Jeans which were both outstanding entrées. We paired it with a Caesar salad and glass of Pedro Martinez Alesancio red wine. Service was pretty standard, not exceptional and not poor but the atmosphere and ambience were perfect. Will definitely be back again, I want to eat the salmon. read more

After a long bike ride my husband and I found an outdoor table at Gino's . We felt we deserved a special treat. And we sure got it. The food was wonderful. But the wine list is clearly one if the best Italian wine lists in town . The service, considering we were two sweaty, scruffy people was excellent. We live in Sellwood and have patronized Gino's for over 10 years. In the past we enjoyed good food and service, however, our experience there last night was less than spectacular. My partner and I were treating a friend to dinner for her birthday and we wanted it to be special. It was in fact downright terrible. The hostess was rude and the wait staff inattentive and unfriendly. After a wait for a table (which we expected for a Friday night) we were seated in the bar at a cafe size table under a TV screen and next to a group of loud, intoxicated, foul mouthed people. I asked the hostess if we could sit somewhere else and she said she would move us. We never saw her again. When I went looking for her she said she was too busy to talk to me but would stop by our table later. She never did. And to add to the negative experience our waiter took our order but the food was served by staff other than him and he never checked up on us to insure we were happy. Our combined bar and restaurant bill came to over $230. You would certainly think for that we would have had better service; we didn't. read more

Gino's is still my favorite italian restaraunt in Portland. When my parents are in town we always check in. The food is very close to the style of Italian my grandma used to make which makes my dad very happy. My faves are the Cioppino which has a lighter broth than the traditional tomatoey style cioppinos. Very delicious! The Salmon Dijon is always excellent. For appetizers I feast on a plate of thier scrumptous mussels and the caesar salad (very for real). My dad eats the shit out of the Grandma Jeans, a very meaty, extra simmered tomato sauce that reminds him of home. This place is serious, homestyle as well as gourmet Italian food. Delicious! I love Italian food done right and authentic and this place is it. I love the sausage over polenta from the starters but it's so big I can never finish it. Polenta in creamy and amazing, marinara sauce is fresh and flavorful. Also tried my mothers chicken Marsala and it was also amazing. Can't give enough props to this place. Way worth the travel for me and the price is reasonable for the quantity and quality. read more

This place was fantastic! It was a bit warm and we ate outside. I had the Cioppino ...."Seafood Stew" a generous mix of shrimp, salmon, scallops, clams, mussels, and garlic, bathed in fish stock, served on spaghetti", as written on the menu. We go to Gino's at least once a week for lunch. Great prices, wonderful food, friendly and inviting atmosphere. Great dinners as well, however, due to the size of the dining room, it can get rather noisy with large groups. Lunch is more low key which suits me better. read more

Three nervous runners anxiously poured over the menu before opting to head to Gino's the night before the Portland Marathon. With nothing to go on besides the recommendations of friendly wait staff at other delightful eating establishments in Stumptown we were hopeful, yet cautious. As we pulled up to this unassuming looking restaurant we weren't sure what to expect for a Saturday night without reservations (they do not take them). We put our names in and waited at the bar for about 10 minutes all the while perusing the extensive wine list. Once seated our waitress was attentive if not slightly curt. Each of us had in mind exactly what we wanted as pre-race fuel and none of us left disappointed. Three out of the four in our party are non-meat eaters but the options were still plentiful. I opted for a special of the night - Black Cod with roasted fingerling potatoes. One of my fellow dinners went with the ravioli while the other two shared the salmon and a plate of spaghetti with a marinara sauce (not on the menu but an easily accommodated request). While we were waiting and stressing about the impending race we noticed the very homey feel of the main dining room with interesting paintings and other art work. Families were enjoying themselves and the atmosphere was very comforting. The food came out quickly and was cooked to perfection. The black cod was pan seared in olive oil with salt and pepper. Fingerling potatoes roasted in olive oil as well. A very simple meal that did not leave me questioning what I had just eaten but rather very content and satisfied. The service continued to be a little lackluster but the food more than made up for it. My fellow dinners were equally pleased with their meals and offered no complaints. Next time I find myself in Portland, I hope to find myself back at Gino's - this time enjoying a glass of Barolo! read more

I grade hard I think....but this place will make you feel like your hard earned money bought you a great evening. Great atmosphere. Parking is a little hard to find. They occasionally have a pasta fettucini alfredo dish with sausage that will make you tear up. (please ask them to keep it on their menu all the time). The Caesar salad is cool and crisp with a nice garlicky zing, and I don't have to worry that I won't like something I order because everything on the menu is excellent. Used to visit a lot when I lived in Sellwood, now I live in Boise. Back in town for a week and wanted a quick drink. Walked in just on the cusp at 10 pm. This young dude behind the bar with thick arms and poor posture ignored us for a minute and then walked over and told us they were closed. Ginos has this best homemade caesar dressing and the clams are to die for! We can just order salads and steamer clams and be quite content... sopping up the sauce with crusty bread is a must. I dined at Gino's, for the first time, last Saturday night, as a part of a group of eight. It was New Years Day, and the restaurant offered us the happy hour menu in the dining room. The server was very attentive, and also suggested that we order one Caesar salad for the table, rather than individually, as it would be less expensive. I ordered the Puttanesca off of the happy hour menu, and I enjoyed it thoroughly. I will definitely be going back. read more
