We love a sweet treat! GIO Gelati delivers just that with a decent amount of flavors available and a shelf of preserved fruits / jams. Keep in mind that they have a rotating menu (green apple and yuzu) that steers away from their classic flavors (vanilla bean, tiramisu, cappucino, etc). There's also vegan options. I came in wanting their hazelnut gelato, but the worker kindly let me know that it changes 2x a week. It's relatively pricey with a kids cup (1 flavor) being $6.50. We opted for the small cup (2 flavor) and just got the vegan chocolate. The worker let us sample as many flavors as we wanted before we decided on one. Their chocolate gelato had a creamy and rich semi-sweet dark chocolate flavor. I would've loved if there was a wafer, but you can add certain toppings for $2 each. I love gelato, so it's no surprise I was super excited to try GIO Gelati. We came here after a very full lunch at Delarosa, but in my mind, there's always room for dessert! The store itself is quite quaint. However, GIO Gelati boasted a wide variety of gelato flavors, and they were even offering samples when I went (July 4th weekend)! One thing I will note is that the prices are on the steeper side (which I guess is expected of gelato stores). I got the kids size of the coffee flavor, which I believe came out to be about $5 or $6. That being said, maybe I was too full from lunch, but the kids size scoop turned out to be the perfectly sized after-lunch dessert. They really do tightly pack that scoop into the cup! Not the best experience. Let's start with the service first. Upon arrival the young man working the counter failed to acknowledge us. He was too busy on his phone sitting in a corner to really care or notice. We had to call out to him so he'd help us. The young man didn't offer us any samples or at least let us know what some popular flavors were. We ended up getting pistachio and chocolate togo. Hubby and I carried our cups to the car to give the gelato a first try. We were hoping the bad service did not equate to bad gelato, but we were wrong. The pistachio gelato had no pistachio flavor. It was extremely bland. The chocolate was okay but could use improvement. Honestly speaking, I've had lots of gelato in Italy before and can vouch that GIO does not hold a candle to gelato in Italy. No, I am not expecting it to be exactly the same as Italy, but at least get the flavors to taste like what it should be. Then you can charge for $6.50 a small scoop.
