On a random weekday we came here for a swee t treat after lunch seeing all the great reviews. We ordered stuff at the counter and just stood inside since we'd just come from a nice lunch and didn't want a sit down service again. We got a pistachio cannoli which was topped with so many pistachios.. the filling was light, the outer shell was perfectly crispy. Overall just delightful.. but the true hero of this spot for me was their hot chocolate. It was thick, dark and not too sweet.. a perfect combination when it comes to hot chocolate. It was sooo good that we came back again just for their hot chocolate. They have a dining room inside with plenty of seating so maybe next time I'll do that. Highly recommend this spot.. the reviews don't lie!!
Came to get the gelato here because of the raving reviews. We came late on a Tuesday night and waited around 15 minutes in line. You pay first with what size you want and if you want cup/cone. Felt rushed ordering, they gave us a cone even though we paid for a cup. Make sure you know what you want before hand because he did not like when we asked what the flavor profile difference was between lemon and limoncello (we tried looking it up in line but unfortunately there's no signal here). Pistachio gelato was really delicious nice and creamy!! I prefer pistachio bits in my pistachio gelatos for added texture which this one didn't have but that's not to say the gelato wasn't amazing it's more of a persona preference. The lemon was very tarty and refreshing!
Old world charm! On the recommendation of our apartment host, we visited Giolitti for a gelato. The café is just beautiful - it exudes old world charm with elegant wood panelled interiors and glass display cases filled with delicious looking food. The coffee is nothing special, but the gelato was sublime!
It was my first time visiting and overall lots of options. First you pay and then you go to the counter to get what you ordered. I got a small and it comes with two flavors. You can only eat in if you don't order the to go options otherwise if you get to go you won't be allowed to eat inside. Overall it has the ambience of a milkshake shop!
This was one of our favorite gelato spots across all of the cities we visited in Italy! The place is massive and there was a large crowd of people, as it deserves. You order the size you want and pay at the register, and then take your ticket to the counter to order your flavors. I got the pistachio and dark chocolate, and o m g was this delicious. Maybe it was because it was my first gelato in Italy but I was actually mind blown by how good it was. I've had my fair share of gelato, but the flavor and texture of this was perfection - so smooth, and the pistachio and dark chocolate flavors were so intense and rich. I can still remember being astonished by how good they tasted. There is a lot of good pistachio gelato out there, but this one was something special for sure. Highly highly recommend trying!
A great gelato spot that was in an easily reachable location - they do not offer seating for their customers who only order gelato though, only for those ordering food/drinks. You pay at the cashier and bring your receipt over to another line to get your gelato. Lines move quickly though. The ambiance is casual. They have lots of flavors - we tried the pistachio and salted caramel, both of which were delicious. The salted caramel was sweeter than I expected.
While traveling in Italy, a family member highly recommended Giolitti's gelatos. So, when we were in Rome, we found a branch near where we stayed and decided to try it. The gelato is superb! They have many flavors, and you can choose a few for your cone or cup. The larger size lets you mix more flavors. On our first visit, we tried about four or five different flavors and loved them so much that we stopped for a second time a couple of days later. Their gelatos are very flavorful and not too sweet compared to the average ice cream and gelato in the US. The line was long, so you might have to wipe your mouth often if you're drooling too much while looking at all the gelato options. The staff is very quick and helpful. It's an experience worth trying if you are in Rome.
Wow!!! Amazing gelato here!! I know there are many gelato places to choose from, but you have to try this place and compare it to other places and you will see the difference. The line was very very long when we got there. Don't be afraid to get in line though since the line moves quickly! We were out in the street waiting and line was constantly moving. You paid for the size of gelato and then you stand in another line to get the flavors you want. There's indoor seating, but you are not allowed to sit there if you are just ordering the gelato. There's a line to sit in the cafe.
Probably the best gelato I had in Rome, if not very close. It was both thick and creamy and the flavors were rich and a wide range of them. I went back twice to confirm how I felt about it. My favorite coffee flavored gelato stop. Loved the old school feel of Giolitti. It was very crowded on both my visits, but the line moves quickly. Their system is that you pay first and pick out your flavors after, which can be a little confusing. Definitely a staple worth visiting.
Our Airbnb was few blocks away from this place, there was always a line here so decided to check it out. The gelato was just okay, nothing special. They have sir down service and to go as well, you pay a little extra with sit down table service. Staff is super friendly. I'd though skip the place if looking for authentic gelato flavors.
Super popular gelato shop that opens late! Pay first at the front then head to the counter to get your gelato in either a cone or cup. It was 10:30 PM, but still busy with a lot of people enjoying their gelato outside. Theres a lot of flavors to choose from. I went for a small which includes two flavors: I picked strawberry and pistachio. The gelato was so good! The flavors were rich and the consistency was perfect. They have a lot of reviews for good reason - they have really good gelato. Highly recommend this spot for gelato in Rome!
Giolitti has the reputation of having excellent gelato in Rome, and it is fair to say that it lived up to that reputation. You may not find THE best gelato in the city , but you will not be disappointed--and you will not have a shortage of flavors!! If you are looking to get some great coffee, this is a great place to get that as well. Expect crowds but you will move along quickly! Make sure you order at the register FIRST and then proceed to pick your flavors/receive your coffee by showing those respective counters your receipt! read more
Why 5 stars? Because this was our favorite gelato in Italy. --- --- --- Despite nearby Gelateria Della Palma getting a lot of hype, Giolitti was definitely our favorite in Rome. It was a total mad house in here, much like the rest of the surrounding area nearby. Fortunately, the craziness is a bit more controlled at the beginning, because you actually pay for your order first and receive a ticket. It gets a lot more hectic when you actually head back to the area where the gelato is served. It was difficult to even get close to the counter without being a jerk and moving people out of your way. My wife was motivated to get her damn ice cream, so she gladly pushed through while I stayed back. She made it out alive, and it turned out the journey was totally worth it. I ordered a mango and white cream. The mango tasted like fresh mango and was perfect. The white cream was kind of a plain vanilla. My wife ordered vanilla cream, which was more like a vanilla bean - I liked that a lot more. Mango + vanilla cream would have been the ultimate thing to order. I'm normally not a huge fan of the cone, but this one was delicious and a perfect way to finish off our experience. We ended up just standing and eating because there was no seating nearby, but that didn't bother us because we were in heaven enjoying our treats. read more

Hands down my favorite coconut and banana gelato on the planet. I've been coming here for over 20 years, and their gelato and quick takeout never disappoints. I've also tried their sit-down service, which is also a nice experience if you have extra time. Giolitti is one of those places that has attracted a lot of tourists from great reviews and the movie Roman Holiday (Audrey Hepburn enjoyed a gelato from here in the movie), but it seems to still attract the locals, and hasn't lost any quality over time like some places often do. Just follow the crowds walking from the Pantheon to Giolitti, and don't worry about the long line...it moves very quickly. read more

Probably the most popular gelato spot in Rome. It can get pretty nuts here as people rush to the counter to get their orders taken care of. You pay first and then head into the warzone. Pretty much whoever can get to the guy serving the gelato first, wins! So expect lots of pushing and angry people. As for the gelato? It's great. There is like 50 flavors here, so that on itself is a big challenge. The taste is phenomenal which explains the crowd. No visit to Rome is complete without some Giolitti! read more

Best. Gelati. Ever. In our brief trip to Italy, we made frequent visits to gelato shops (as they're located every few steps), but this was hands-down the most delicious we had! The S.O. and I shared a medium cone (huge!), which came with 3 flavors and cream on top and was so reasonably priced (approx. 3,50€ if I recall correctly) - this would've easily cost $10+ in the US. The line was literally out the door and across the street, but went quite quick! We ordered black cherry (S.O. choice - yuck! It went on the bottom so I wouldn't accidentally get a lick of it), Nutella (thick nutella-like and very rich), and nocciola (hazelnut, not as strong as the Nutella but complements perfectly!) gelato and LET ME TELL YOU, it was SO perfect. Very generous with the amount they packed on of each flavor, and we were on cloud 9 with every bite. read more

Omg, the best gelato ever I had in Italy or ever. I tried all flavors, it's all good. I had one medium size cone with pistachio, melon, and water melon flavor, all great, I can't wait but go back for 2nd order, also a medium size but in a cup with other three flavors, black berry, rice, and pink, there are all delicious, the rice flavor is kinda of special, and it tastes like rice pudding but in a gelato format. I also like the water melon one a lot, because it tastes like real water melon. Highly recommended! read more

Yes yes yes and yes!! I had gelato almost everyday during our trip and I can honestly say this place was my absolute favorite. My husband who typically does not love sweets said he loved the gelato!! Though the line is kind of unorganized (two separate lines to pay and one to order) it was still pretty quick. Once you get to the ordering part, there's really no line. Be aggressive and just squeeze in if you're little like me. But mmm mmm mm! I ordered the rice flavor and it was soooooo good. Almost like horchata I guess. I don't know what it was but there's just so much quality that goes into their gelato. It was worth it and definitely a must visit if you're in Rome. read more
FIVE STARS! I can confidently say this is the best gelato that I have ever eaten in my life. The line was out the door, but went quickly. You pay first and get a ticket, then hand it to the workers on the counter when you order. I got the medium for 4€ and it was HUGE! I chose the oreo, dark chocolate, and raspberry for my flavors. Whipped cream was added on top for no charge. The serving size was HUGE as well, we struggled to eat all of it before it melted on us!!!! Also, we got cones, and they gave us the chocolate dipped cones for no extra charge!! What a nice surprise! I will DEFINITELY be returning for more gelato before we leave Rome!!! Just a comment - if you order a cone or cup of gelato, it can't be eaten inside. You have to take it out. Not a deal breaker for us. But if you would like to sit down and be waited on, that's also an option but I believe there was an extra charge for that for the service. read more

Note: I went in November 2017. When we travel we try to never eat at the same place twice....this became the exception! When you go in, there's a cashier at the front who sells you tickets that you take to the gelato area in the back. During our first trip there, the man at the front was super friendly and joked with us. The wait in the gelato area was a bit busy but didn't take away from the experience at all. We decided that we had to go back later on in the vacation and the man at the front remembered us! For such a busy place in one of the busiest cities this alone was OUTSTANDING customer service! I'd recommend this place to anyone and will definitely return again! read more

Delicious! We had it twice, I couldn't get enough of their Baileys Irish Cream! Also tried the- Caramelized fig and tiramisu. You have choice of cone or cup and free of charge whipped cream on top. Ordered both times the small size which is way more than enough for one person. Counter staff are not very personable, very wham bam in and out but I wouldn't take offense to it, they treat all customers the same way lol We had no wait during first visit and we visited around 1230/1pm on a Wednesday. On Thursday around 330/4pm, we had to wait around 25 mins. Deff must try while in Roma! Yum-O!! read more
Came here to try some real gelato with tomo after lunch. They have more than a few vegan options to choose from which was dope. I ordered the cioccolato fondente, limone and melograno but tomo wanted a cone (not vegan) with it. So I just ate the gelato and it was sooo bomb. The hype is real. The chocolate tasted like a melted chocolate bar, very thick and beyond chocolatey. Definitely my fav. Tomo loved the other two, still bomb. Can't wait to come back. read more

Gelato was ok, I won't say is the best i ever try, just ok... they need to improve their customer service, very rude, since all empty tables outside and inside, they asked to don't seat there to enjoy the ice cream. read more

Overwhelmed with the gelato options here, so many choices!!! Super long line, but moves pretty quickly once people (like me!) figure out you need to pay first. I decided to try the grapefruit and cream, and while the grapefruit had a zing and was tasty, it got too tarty. The cream was definitely not for me, and I ended up trashing it shortly after. First time on my trip! read more
This place is tied with Frigidarium as my favourite Gelato place in Roma. I say you go here for the nice dining room (skip just getting a cone in the usual long line-up) and sit and relax while you eat a sundae or one of the delicious menu items. The gelato is one of the creamiest I have ever enjoyed. The guys serving the tables are pretty firm at telling people who just bought a cone that they can't sit in the dining room, but they take care of their customers perfectly. read more

One of the best gelato shops in Rome. Very popular -- there was a line going in, but it was worth the wait! At the door, they checked covid vaccination cards/green passes (as did most places in Italy), then you go to the cashier to pay, and finally you take the receipt to the gelato counter to be served. Giolitti was the best gelato I've had in Rome and Italy. You pay at the cashier first and bring your receipt to the ice cream area. I got the 3 scoops. "Yogurt yogurt" was my favorite flavor because it tastes like original frozen yogurt except very fresh and soft. My 2nd favorite was black dark chocolate because that was the darkest chocolate I've ever had for an ice cream and it's very rich in flavor. The 3rd flavor I got was black cherry and that was good too. read more

After reading all of the fantastic reviews and wanting to make sure we found the best gelato place, my husband and I walked over to Giolitti, late one night. It's open very late and was surprisingly busy when we got there. There is one line to pay for your gelato (this is done first) and another to pick your flavors. The price is very reasonable and the small cone with 2 flavors was more than enough (to clarify, one small cone, per person - I couldn't bear to share my gelato and we also wanted to try as many flavors as possible). I got the pistachio and a cherry mixture gelato. Both were amazing and creamy. My husband got the chocolate and a speciality recommended one. We left very happy with our selections. We also ordered two of the baked goods, a pistachio cookie and a lemon cake. Those were delicious, but this place is known for gelato, so if you're picking one or the other, gelato is the way to go. You pay extra to sit at the tables, like many places in Italy, so no surprise there. We didn't ask the cost, because most people were outside standing eating their gelato anyway - so possibly skip the table and save a few minutes Euro. read more
Giolitti is probably a "must try" for first-time visitors to Rome. However, I thought the gelato quality was just average. Plus, the rushed ordering process and extra charge to be able to sit at a table made the experience less than enjoyable. Giolitti has way more flavors than a typical gelato place - at least 50 or so. It is quite overwhelming. I ordered tiramisu and my wife got nutella and double dark chocolate. We both gave it 3-stars. Giolitti remains super touristy and over-hyped in my opinion. There are several other gelato shops in Rome with better quality. read more

Giolotti was delicious. Sure the service isn't amazing. All the employees were older gentlemen and 1 lady. They weren't super friendly but to the point. They seemed tired and more annoyed at the language barrier since I didn't speak Italian but honestly the gelato was worth it. It was the BEST gelato we had on our trip. I recommend it to anyone visiting Rome. read more

First off, it's a spacious place that's usually pretty busy. I tried the tiramisu and chocolate flavored gelato and both flavors were delicious. If you don't like tiramisu or chocolate, you don't have to worry because there are so many other flavors to choose from. I couldn't believe how many flavors they had to offer. Overall, my experience was great and the gelato was refreshing for the hot day. I wouldn't say this is the best gelato I've had, but it's definitely in my top 5. read more
It's OVER. The competition for best gelato is over. I have been Rome-ing ;) all over the city trying to find the best gelato. Chief called and said this was it. I got raspberry and wild cherry and I'm still thinking about how good it was. Definitely go to giolitti!! read more

They say you always have a soft spot for your first! Giolitti was my first gelato in Rome and it was excellent (I came here twice within the four days that I was in Rome). They have a diverse assortment of very traditional dessert and fruit flavors. You probably won't find anything too out of the box. Tip: Be sure to pay first before queueing up at the gelato counter! I can only give it 4 stars though because of the service. Both times I've come, they've been really rude and rushed to get me serviced even though there weren't many others behind me. They don't really want you to sample but I saw some other lady before my sampling 5 flavors and they seemed more nice to her! The caramelized fig was definitely a stunner! The flavor was so potent as if you were eating the real thing. I also tried the Roman Holiday which tasted kind of like a pear flavor that I really enjoyed. Arancia was really refreshing as is Pomegranate (more like mixed berry but it looks really pretty) and Grapefruit. Their fruity flavors are pretty straight forward. So be prepared to take it on the go though. read more

It was our first time trying gelato in Italy, and we of course had to go to the oldest gelato establishment in Rome - Giolitti! I was completely blown away by the gelato, which was the perfect companion on that hot summer day. I ordered the lemon and melon flavour. The lemon was a beautiful sour touch, and the melon was sooo sweet! It tasted like fresh fruit, and was so fruity. Yum! My mom and sister ordered the champagne and rice flavour. The rice flavour was very subtle, but it had pieces of rice in it and was a very mellow sweet. The champagne flavour was extremely strong! It tasted like true alcohol, and honestly shows that Giolitti uses authentic ingredients when making their gelato. In fact, since this was the first time my sister was exposed to alcohol, she got tipsy off the champagne gelato and was dizzy the entire day.... My dad got the sweet rice and limoncello flavour. His limoncello did resemble my melon flavour, but mine was definitely far more natural. Meanwhile, his had the unmistakable alcoholic bitterness and limoncello sugary-ness. read more

If you're in Rome, you MUST try this place. I literally dream of the fluffy heavenly gelato from Giolitti... this place has the most fluffy yet creamy and velvety gelato ever. I don't know how they do it, but I WISH we had anything remotely close to this place in the States. Every flavor I tried was amazinnnnnnnnnnggggggg! I got the mango and cream combo, tiramisu + pistachio combo. You cannot go wrong at this place... Another huge plus is they give you a complimentary dollop of whipped cream on top. I dream of going back to this place. Go try this place at LEAST once if you're in Rome. :) read more

If you are ever in Rome, then you need to stop by Giolitti's! This place was recommended to me by a friend who said that she went there almost every day during her study abroad program! We were only in Rome for about two and a half days and we went each day that we were there. Their gelato is so creamy and I absolutely LOVED each flavor that I tried! My favorite flavor was their pistachio, it wasn't too sweet and it actually had pieces of pistachio in it which was a nice surprise. Their tiramisu gelato was good, but it was a little sweet for me, and their dark chocolate had a slightly different texture than the other two since it is dairy free. If they ask you if you would like cream, definitely say yes! It's light, perfect, and helps to cut the sweetness of the gelato. They only offered it one out of the two times that we went so I'm not sure if it's something that you ask for or if it's something they ask you about but either way, I recommend it! If you end up going, make sure to pay for your gelato before you go to the gelato counter or they'll end up sending you back to the register since you need to give them your receipt before you get to order your gelato. Giolitti's was busy each time that we went, but the line moves fairly quickly so don't worry - it gives you time to look at their pastry case as well as think about which of their many flavors you want to try! read more
