This place was a huge disappointment. We ordered a pizza 45 minutes in advance, were told to come back and be seated when it was ready, and even received a notification that the pizza was done. When we returned, we were promptly seated, but that's where everything fell apart. No server came by for over 15 minutes. When we finally asked about our pizza, the server argued that it couldn't be ready yet because "it usually takes 60 minutes." We explained that we'd already been notified it was ready. After checking, he returned with the pizza, which, unsurprisingly, was lukewarm by then. He took our drink orders, and a friend ordered an appetizer, but we never saw this joker again. No check-ins, no water refills, no "how's everything?" nothing. We had to ask another server to find him and when he finally reappeared, it was to drop off the bill--and he even told two of the girls to pay when they hadn't ordered anything. My 2nd time in Chicago and it was highly recommended that I go to Giordano's to get a "real" slice of Chicago pizza. I was in the city for a work function and after we were done with a late event, a group of 7 of us knew we needed to head to Giordano's before we flew out the next day. It was 9pm by the time we got there and the place was still busy! We put our name in for a table and were told that it would be 25 minutes. We also knew from Yelp that it would take 45 minutes for our pizza to be ready so we also proceed with placing our order for one classic with pepperoni. The 25 minutes flew by and when we went to check to see if the table was ready, we learned that the host had accidentally deleted our reservation! They were able to quickly find us a table to remedy the issue and we sat down around 9:30pm. Before our group had sat down, our waitress Nicole U. came over and before saying hello, immediately barked at us that the kitchen closes at 10:00 and that she wasn't sure if we'd get any food. She looked extremely frazzled and annoyed that we were sat in her section (though the restaurant was open for another 30 minutes). We told her that we had already placed our order and gave her the receipt. She then proceeded to be fairly rude to us the entire meal. As we felt that we were being rushed, we asked her at 9:45 if our pizza was ready to which she replied "We told you it would take 45 minutes." She immediately went to check with the kitchen and brought it out. The pizza was DELICIOUS and completely saved our experience from Nicole's grumpiness. It was hot, cooked to perfection, the crust was buttery, had a great cheese pull, and the pepperoni was fresh. We came through looking at the attractions. We asked a local about a good spot for pizza and they turned us to this place. They had mentioned another but they said this place was where they'll always go. It didn't disappoint, the deep dish was exactly what we wanted my wife was very happy with it. Food? We ordered delivery to our hotel. We had an Italian Meat Sandwich and a 6" deep dish pizza with sausage, mushrooms, and black olives. The sandwich was very nice with plenty of warm (not hot) tender and tasty beef, cheese, and hot giardiniera on a very soft roll with a cup of jus on the side as well as excellent fries. I didn't care for the cottony bread. Also, the way that the meal was packed allowed the fries to get soggy. The 6" personal pizza was definitely wee, but in reality it's so dense that it was more than enough for one. Loved the "sauce" which was smashed Romas liberally seasoned with oregano. This reminded me of what my former father-in-law, born in Naples, used to make for us. He'd take a can of tomatoes, smash them flat, then lay them on the crust applying a layer of oregano thick enough to obscure the tomato red, and a liberal layer of fresh ground black pepper topped with EVOO. Delicious, as was this! The crust was a nice flaky, biscuit-like crust but didn't taste of butter or EVOO, nor of cornmeal. Thus, 4 stars and not 5. Service? Our family decided to try out the famous pizza in Chicago and thought why not the closest one to our hotel which low and behold was Giordanos. To start off the atmosphere does make the place seem super busy and hectic at times with servers running around to get all the tables taken care of. We sat down and were taken care of in a reasonable amount of time. It was a nice touch that the server did warn us about the wait times with how busy they were and how long deep dish takes to cook. We ordered one thin crust pizza, one order of the calamari, one salad, and finally one pan pizza. The thin crust really was a disappointment and my family truly thought that it was one of the worst pizzas we have ever had in our entire lives. 1/10 The salad was decent, it seemed very rushed and not much effort put into the salad but overall the taste was ok and a large portion size 6/10 The pan pizza was the best part of our meal and it seems like they only care about the larger crust pizzas while just ignoring quality on the smaller crust sizes. It had a really good crust and also a lot of seasoning and really good flavor. 9/10 Last the calamari was not really amazing but it had some flavor to it, something slightly concerning is that I had a few fries sprinkled in there which makes me wonder about cross contamination and quality control. 7/10 The service was good, had some hiccups but the server seemed super busy so you can't complain. Giordano's in downtown Chicago was a good foodie adventure. This was my first time trying deep dish pizza and although it wasn't my favorite it was good. My favorite style pizza is New York style and the margarita thin crust was delicious. The calamari was my favorite part of the whole meal. I feel like I'm missing something. I do not want to be super judgmental because I realize most of these employees are teenagers but dang does the customer service lack here. My husband and I have had deep dish in California so we were dying to try Giordano's because all the reviews made it sound like it was one of the best. We arrived and the place was packed outside! We got a text that our table was ready so we went back inside. My husband got in the check-in line which was huge; after 10 minutes he tells me the employee told him to go upstairs. We get upstairs and there's another line. A family is being helped/speaking to someone who is part of management. The hostess goes to the party behind us and asks them if they received a text that their table was ready to which they respond yes. I also got a Cesar salad which in my opinion had too much dressing and ruined the taste a bit. Pizza - we got a small deep dish: half jalapeño and pepperoni, the other half was chicken and jalapeño. In actuality, the time was the same. :/ Luckily for us we ordered the old bay & bbq seasoned wings which came with a salad. I chose the house salad that came with a vinaigrette that was waay too vinegary. The old bay wings had a great dry rub taste, and our son truly enjoyed his bbq wings. As for the pizza...not impressed. I think people literally just enjoy seeing the stretchy pizza display when you first pull the slices apart, but that does not replace great flavor. I felt the it was loads of cheese piled on with store bought sliced pepperoni layered in, with a biscuit crust. There was no seasoning at all in it whatsoever. So with that being said, been there, done that, still on the prowl for the "legit" deep dish pizza. read more
