Look, great doesn't mean best, but this place was really good. Inside is a really charming old-world place with only 11 tables. It's a pretty small place. The reservation we got was for the patio, but when we arrived, they didn't have a table for us. We waited probably an extra 15 mins and then the lady was able to arrange an inside table for us. She had been getting a bit of lip from folks coming in just before us, and so she definitely seemed to be dishing out some lip herself. I think that should have been a better experience. I will acknowledge that we did appreciate a table inside eventually when the one just outside wasn't there. Our server once seated was like, amazing. To me she made up for the passive aggressive comments from before. She was so patient and well-spoken and all. Seemed like she was from a Michelin-star place. So to start, the Caesar salad was ok. What was nice in there, it had these crispy chips of some kind in the salad. Overall, the dressing could've been a bit more caesar-y. Then we also had these truffle oil mozzarella sticks and those were pretty amazing. Served with marinara sauce, which was pretty good. But the sticks themselves were like so cheesy and gooey and freshly made, it was great. Then for the mains, we had a vodka pasta and one other one. Both were vegetarian pasta options, which is great. Both had really nice flavored sauces and the pastas were also done right. I forgot to ask for crushed red pepper as some spice boost would've made things even better. Also, one of the pastas was a gluten free - and it was really good - in the sense that I never would've guessed that it was gf. It's a corn-based pasta, in case anyone wants to know. I really wish they had an eggplant parm, but unfortunately they had only chicken and veal parms, only. Lastly, and to top everything else off, we had a soft-serve almond-caramel (not the exact name) gelato. Wow, that was SO good. Nutty flavor and creamy rich. Probably the best course of the night. Ciccio Mio was the final stop of our seven-restaurant Sunday food tour, and it could not have been a more perfect ending. The restaurant is intimate, warm and moody in the best way - exactly the kind of place you want to settle into for a late dinner. We started with the truffle mozzarella sticks and burrata, followed by the rigatoni vodka and chicken parmesan. That chicken parm was easily one of the standout dishes of my entire Chicago trip. For dessert we had the citrus olive oil cake, and then they surprised us by gifting the table their soft serve. We absolutely did not need another bite of food at that point... and yet somehow that soft serve disappeared. It was amazing. And the service? Top notch. One of my favorite Italian restaurants in Chicago! The food is always so consistent, and the atmosphere is perfect for a cozy date night with dim lighting and a great ambiance. The burrata is an absolute must order. It's flown in fresh from Italy a few times a week, and you can definitely taste the quality. The Rigatoni Vodka is another favorite of mine. It's rich, creamy, and always delicious. We also loved the Ricotta Gnocchi, Bucatini Amatriciana, and finished with the Toasted Almond Cookie Soft Serve, which was the perfect dessert. That being said, Ciccio Mio quite literally translates to 'My darling' in Italian and it is undeniably the darling of the Hogsalt restaurant group. A ~very romantic~ touch is that they give you a red rose for your birthday. Checked this spot off my list while celebrating a special occasion. They had a card waiting at our table, which was such a thoughtful touch. The vibe is dark, moody, and perfect for an intimate night out. Service was excellent. The chicken Parmesan was the star of the meal, huge portion and absolutely worth ordering. Was able to snag a late reservation on a Thursday evening and once I got there, it was clear why it's so tough to get into - the dining room is TINY! Vibes were amazing, super cozy and intimate. I have been trying to get a reservation here for my last few visits and was finally able to snag one this go around. The restaurant is gorgeous with a dimly lit well decorated interior. It's small and cozy with maybe only 15 tables total? You are VERY close to the other tables though and I did feel like it took away from the experience a bit when you hear everything in the conversation at the next table. We started with the truffle mozzarella sticks and the steak and anchovy tartare. Both were really good and very flavorful. We then moved onto pasta and got the vodka pasta and the amatriciana. For two pastas that were supposed to have a kick I was very disappointed that neither did. To be honest, I actually found them a bit bland which was really disappointing given how much the food is raved about here. I'm not really sure if this was just an off night but I was really and truly bummed with the dishes. We also had the mushroom side which was very good. Truly one of the most enjoyable Italian food experiences in Chicago. It's worth the effort to plan ahead and make a reservation. Reservations are released 21 days ahead of time, which I personally find impossible to make. Every time I've checked over the last several years there have been no availability. Yesterday I decided to pop on their website again and was delighted to find that they had released same day dinner reservations for patio only dining. The weather was perfect for outdoor dining so I went ahead and booked a table for Friday night. I felt like I won the dinner lottery. Service was wonderful and I didn't mind sitting outside at all next to the road with cars. I actually never stepped foot in the restaurant so cannot comment on what it's like inside. But do not give up that patio dining reservation if it's available. All of our dishes were delicious. I was really impressed by the meatball appetizers, chicken vesuvio (the potatoes are a must get as a side if you skip this dish), and branzino. The meats and sauces were wonderfully balanced and tender. Nothing tasted overly salted. Ironically, the pasta felt less of a star compared to the other dishes. And of course I had to get the gelato, which was so aesthetically presented and the taste just reminded me of an Italian summer vacation. read more

Downgrading bc of the pickup service I had today. (Spoiler: Karen the host is aptly named). I consistently order pickup (direct and DD) and it's usually quick and consistent - my order is always ready before the quoted time. Today, I came in and there was no host at the front for long enough that several people just walked straight back (maybe they were meeting someone but didn't seem like it) and several servers walked in and outside without greeting. By the time Karen shows up again, it's me and another person waiting. Instead of asking "who was here first?" She services the white man, why would you assume he's there first?, and I have to listen to him asking if he can sit at the bar, doesn't understand why he can't sit at the bar, needs recommendations nearby where he can drink and wait at, if they'll hold his bags, and his whole life story. She's about to walk away with his bags when I say that I was here first and I'm picking up. She tells me go to the side window outside which I've never been prompted to do. I say so and she asks for the name, if I'm the person it's for and the gets on her walkie to see if anyone can walk it up. No apology and didn't appreciate her tone throughout the exchange. I like the bucatini and spicy rigatoni but if I order next time, will avoid Karen who had terrible vibes. read more

For the entrees, we ordered the Carbonara ($25.99), Truffle Malfadine ($24.99), Rigatoni Vodka ($25.99), and the chicken Parmesan ($34.99). My favorites were the Vodka and chicken Parmesan. I enjoyed the other pastas as well and I don't think there'd be any complaints of getting the others. I enjoyed them all very much. We also ordered the mushrooms ($15.99) and potato's ($12.99) which I would get every time. The potato's were very crispy which I love and the mushrooms was carbonara style which was rich. We enjoyed our meals very much that we all ordered dessert as well. We ordered the gelato ($9.99), tiramisu ($17.99), and the olive oil cake ($14.99). I was on my laptop exactly at 9am and my slot got taken as I was about to reserve... so I got stuck with a 8:45pm reservation. Nonetheless, I wanted to eat here so bad to celebrate my 30th birthday so I kept it. The place is pretty small, yet very intimate and romantic. Pricing is moderately expensive with service and quality making up for it. We were placed in a plush velvet booth. The lighting is moody and dark. With its popularity and intimate seating, it's no surprise this place gets booked quickly. You will need to plan weeks ahead in order to get your desired timeslot. As with all Hogsalt restaurants, my only pet peeve is the reservation surcharge that does not get applied towards your bill. Cocktails and Wine were very good. Our favorite dishes were the Meatballs, crispy Vesuvio Potatoes, Lasagna Bolognese Rotolo, Truffle Mozzarella Sticks, Tagiatelle Carbonara, Pavlova and Almond Gelato. Went here for a little solo date night and it might be one of the cutest spots I've ever eaten at. Highly recommend making a reservation, even if it's just for one. The dining room only has like 11 tables, and while there's a lounge for walk-ins, it fills up fast. The cocktail list looked amazing (they have absinthe, which is fun) but I ended up going with wine and it was perfect. I started with the burrata and yes, I ate the whole thing myself. No regrets. I came to Ciccio Mio because I kept hearing they had the best chicken parm in Chicago. After trying it, I can honestly say I haven't had a better one. The chicken was pounded super thin, perfectly crispy, and smothered in the fluffiest blanket of freshly grated cheese over a bright, flavorful tomato sauce. It was ridiculously good. I loved that we were able to get a half size (2 pieces instead of 3) for the focaccia which left us a little more room to try other things. It was really good and I loved that the olives were baked into the inside of the bread, not just on top. We had trouble selecting just two pasta dishes but went either the ricotta gnocchi and lasagna bolognese rotolo. Both were incredible. I think the gnocchi was just a litttttle tastier, but the lasagna was definitely heartier. Our first dinner in Chicago, and it was delicious Italian food with the coolest ambiance! I've heard that this restaurant is rumored to be one of the hardest restaurants to get a reservation. We luckily got a reservation for 9pm which was late, but it worked out. Keep in mind there is a $5/person fee that is charged upon setting up a reservation that unfortunately is not a deposit nor does it go towards your bill. However, we definitely would not have been able to get in if it weren't for the reservation. When we arrived, we saw multiple parties come in to put their name on the waitlist, and the host told them that though their names were on the list, they should have backup dinner plans. The list had 9 parties waiting at this time when they close at 10:30pm! When we finally got sat, the decor was absolutely stunning. The tables were a bit close to each other, but the space overall was not big at all. The setting was definitely intimate with dimmed lighting. We started with the truffle mozzarella sticks, and these have got to be one of the best if not the best mozzarella stick I've ever had! They were a good portion and fried to perfection. The scent and taste of truffle were not overwhelming but just left you wanting more. I ordered the black truffle mafaldine. The pasta was al dente, and though the dish was very light and delicious, I did find myself craving for more truffle flavor. We also ordered the orecchiette which is their signature, and it was spicy and savory. The tagliatelle carbonara was absolutely delightful, but I did find this dish to be on the heavier end. The ricotta gnocchi were so fluffy, filled with delicious cheese, and coated in this rich brown butter sauce. For dessert, we opted for the toasted almond cookie gelato as well as the fior di latte gelato. Each came with a small biscuit to accompany the gelato. Both gelatos were incredibly fine and smooth. The fior di latte was peculiar to me, but the flavors of the pollen, honey, and olive oil surprisingly worked! The toasted almond cookie gelato was so divine with a nice amaretto flavor. Unfortunately, those reservations are gone in a matter of minutes apparently, as we had no luck. So we decided to arrive at 4pm when they opened to perhaps sit at the bar. Once we arrived there, unfortunately bar seating is not an option, however there were two small counter seats at the windows which aren't reserved. One of these was taken, so we accepted the other. I say all this to explain how busy this small restaurant is so you can plan accordingly. The decor inside is beautiful with rich dark wood which sets an elegant ambience for dinner. The wait staff were super friendly, accommodating and knowledgeable. We started the evening with a couple of espresso martinis which were very good. Afterwards, we ordered the meatballs as our starter. The came in a pot with a generous amount of wonderful sauce and were scrumptious. For our entrees, we chose the Rigatoni Vodka and the Lasagna Bolognese Rotolo. Both were very delicious as expected. For dessert, we had the extremely popular Toasted Almond Gelato which was amazing. Recommendations: Meatball Focaccia Orecchiette Pugliese Gelato We made a reservation through Capital One Dining and were able to grab a 6 pm slot on a Sunday. The restaurant was already quite packed when we arrived, but luckily we were seated in a cozy corner toward the back. All the decorations in the restaurant are so pretty, including the paintings and furniture. There were multiple items we wanted to try, and our waitress, Jessica, was super helpful. She recommended the meatball and a half order of focaccia (so we did not get overwhelmed by bread). The meatball was soft, flavorful, with just the right amount of kick from parsley and peppers, paired with a dense tomato sauce, serve in a pot. The focaccia stood out to me as well. You could see the chopped garlic and other ingredients baked right into the loaf, served warm with creamy butter on the side. Our main dishes were served after the appetizers. We ordered the Orecchiette Pugliese and the branzino. The orecchiette was excellent, a perfect balance between the spicy pork sausage, sauce, pasta, and parmesan. The spicy kick from the sausage with the handmade pasta made the dish distinct. The branzino was grilled with a light touch of olive oil, then finished with a squeeze of lemon juice to highlight the natural flavor of the fish. We ended the night with olive oil cake and a small gelato, a simple yet satisfying way to close the meal. My fiancée and I were so satisfied with the arrangement for our date night. The house bread was so soft on the inside and paired well with the oil and pickled veggies. The vesuvio potatoes were so crispy on outside and soft inside, so good. I am very selective with my 5-Star ratings. When it comes to Ciccio Mio, I have no hesitations. I didn't get around to reviewing until now, but I first tried Ciccio in the winter and had one of the most wonderful dining experiences ever. I ate here with my father before a heading to see Harry Potter at The Oriental and this was the ultimate cozy, winter, pre-show dinner. The host was nice enough to squeeze us in before our show, on the sofa in the foyer - it was perfect. Everything from the atmosphere to the service to the unbelievable food... 10/10. It's hard to find a restaurant that thoroughly checks every box. My father and I shared the House Salad, the Whole Branzino, the Spicy Vodka Rigatoni, and then shared a sticky, raisin, pudding cake (?) with ice cream (that I believe was seasonal) and the Cannoncini for dessert. Every single dish blew us away, especially the cake! The vodka pasta has risen to my favorite in Chicago and I look forward to trying more from this menu in the future. I've visited Ciccio Mio three times now, and each visit has been even more outstanding than the last. The service is exceptional, and the cozy atmosphere is welcoming and aesthetically pleasing. And the food - oh my GOD it's amazing. Their appetizers are fantastic, classic but with creative twists. The vodka rigatoni is the blueprint for all vodka rigatonis. Dinner here was exceptional in every respect! Ambience is genteel speakeasy - muted comfort, tables spaced far enough apart that you never feel crowded. Add this to your list if you're visiting Chicago anytime soon. The food was amazing! The asparagus was a little undercooked, but I wasn't about to send it back, wasn't that important to me. The lasagna was like little "roll ups" as opposed to the traditional "piece" of lasagna. But I really enjoyed it! Caesar salad, *chef's kiss. This place BOOKS up, so book your reservation in advance. I just so happened to get a reservation when they opened up the patio. Which was a very pleasant dining experience, but the inside would have been the best! Ciccio Mio was the perfect place to celebrate my December birthday on a frigid Chicago Sunday evening. After securing a week-of reservation through the blessing of Resy alerts, my party was seated immediately at our reserved time at the charming curved corner of the banquette. There, I found a sweet handwritten card wishing me a happy birthday. Our server had excellent recommendations for all of the courses. We enjoyed the focaccia and house salad (the smaller size is plenty for two) to start. Then came the cavalcade of mains: the truffle mafaldine with giant truffle meatball is the thing of dreams, the chicken parmesan is perfectly crisp, and the decadent polenta and vesuvio potatoes as sides. Our service was attentive while still giving much time for chatting and delighting in the delicious dishes. For my celebratory dessert, the toasted almond cookie gelato was presented with a candle and a rose, gratis. Hogsalt restaurants KNOW HOW TO SPOIL YOU on special occasions!
