I called to place a phone order for pick-up. They have a new answering service. I asked for a "large chicken cheese-steak" and the response was "I don't see that on the menu. Is that a sandwich?" Then she told me "mozzarella cheese is not an option." I told her I've been going to the restaurant for years and she obviously doesn't know their menu. I ended up hanging up after saying "I'll just go to the place and order myself. You're answering service is terrible." Then the answering service 'supervisor' called me back and apologized, saying it was a new employee and she could take my order. I declined and just went there myself. After arriving I spoke with another gentleman returning a pizza. He showed me 3 slices in his box with peppers and onions. He said he ordered a whole peperoni pizza. The order got mixed up and he ended up getting the pizza that was being eaten by the help in the kitchen. Also, who puts French fries in a Styrofoam burger box with no vent holes? The fries end up being stuck together and soggy. I've told them they need to put their fries in a paper bag like every other take out place. And I'd also like to say their steak sandwiches have lots of gristle, which they never had before. They must have switched meat suppliers to save money? Good food from a family pizza and 6 pack joint in a random strip mall off 422. There's not a lot lot of restaurants in the area, especially non-chain options. Giovanni's is a solid 4 anywhere. Relative to everything in the surrounding area; absolutely 5 stars! I ordered a chicken cheesesteak, a large is $6.85 and comes on a toasted long roll - I added a little salt and pepper to mine. Service was quick and friendly, food is inexpensive, and tasted good. Atmosphere is a mix between bar and diner and the restaurant is very clean. The tuna hoagies are delicious as well! read more

In the Shelbourne Shopping Center in Exeter Township, Giovanna's is a typical and reliable pizza shop. One little thing though... To the many vegans seeking options who use Yelp: they have a *cheeseless pizza* on the pizza menu. This is more exciting than you think, to us. :-) No, not alternative cheese, but a nice thin crust tomato pie with garlic and sauce. It is called Napoli's Special Pizza. So you don't have to do all the negotiating and explain over and over that you really and truly don't want the cheese. They know what this is and are happy to make it. It is cheap too, small for $6.75, medium for a dollar more, and a large for $9. Next time I will throw some toppings on it. Even better is to take it home, sprinkle on some Daiya mozzarella, and toast it in the over for a few more minutes. We only learned about this after chatting with the staff at Kimberton Whole Foods about pizza choices in Reading. I forgot to ask whether there is whole wheat crust. The staff is friendly and will slip you coupons. They have a large selection of beer in 6-packs too. read more

First of all the fact that a vegan approved this place with a 3 star rating probably says a lot! I never knew this place existed until I became a Yelper. I usually go to Bruno's in Exeter; however I like to have options. Let's talk about the food, I ordered a large plain pizza and it was very tasty, plus oozing with cheese. It was a NY Style pizza (I uploaded the photo). A NY style of pizza for those who do not know has a thinner crust that is not crispy. Actually if you hold the pizza by the crust it will become a sliding board for your cheese, be sure to keep a fold in the middle of your slice so you keep the cheese. Also, the NY style of pizza generally is a greasier style of pizza. Another thing I got from this place was not on my original shopping list, when I walked in the door I saw these personal "rolls." A small sign next to the one read, "Buffalo Chicken Roll." These grabbed my attention immediately, so I told them to throw it onto my order. I actually reheated it a few days later and it wasn't bad. The one thing that would have made this awesome would have been blue cheese (to go along with the Buffalo wing theme). The service was very prompt, and my pizza was only 15 minutes from my phone order. It was not busy (a Tuesday night in July) so I am not sure if the turnaround time would be similar if you are ordering a pizza here during a Friday in Lent. They were also friendly, I am sure I didn't look like a regular to them, so they instantly gave me a coupon for future orders. This was a nice touch, and I will be a repeat customer. I have been back, and this paragraph is my added review. I had to order the cheesesteaks, especially since David R. claims they are the best outside of Philly. Thank you David, they were very delicious. However were they good enough for me to change the rating to a 5 star review? No! Here is why, from the cheesesteak perspective the meat was fantastic, and I couldn't pinpoint if it was seasoned or just a really good grade of beef or both. Please Giovanna's do not change the meat - it is perfect and the meat alone makes your sandwich near perfect. The roll is a standard softer style roll, which I would say is the perfect roll for the sandwich. Let's look at the imperfections, the cheese (they default to a provolone) I was shocked that when I ordered it they didn't ask what type of cheese. I am not complaining about the provolone, but cheesesteaks need options such as american, provolone and or cheddar sauce (a whiz). This was a little disappointing since I really thought their cheesesteaks alone could launch them to the best pizza/steak place in Exeter or Reading. Speaking of not offering cheese whiz, I must say their cheese fries are not something I will buy in the future. The simply melted provolone cheese over a bunch of thick style fries. This was a major disappointment, and for $4, I did get a decent amount, however it isn't cool when you pick one up and they all come up. This is one area that their competitors have an edge on them. Honestly, if I wouldn't have whiz as an option then I probably wouldn't offer cheese fries - that simple. I hope they consider adding this, because I would believe that could not only improve their cheese fries but also their cheesesteaks. They do have a nice beer selection, however their competitors in Exeter Township have them beat, and the selection is not as massive as Bruno's or The Liberty Taproom, but still has solid options and a great selection of craft brews. Finally location, location, location is always something I take under consideration before ordering, the Shelbourne Rd. Shopping Center is much easier to navigate then the Bruno's/Boscov's Shopping Center. This is nice for Giovanna's because they do not have to compete for parking options with a huge department store (Boscov's) and a movie theater. Go ahead and give it a shot, I think you will be pleasantly surprised. read more

Ordered a large mushroom pizza. Was in all honesty "Okay". The pizza sauce for some reason reminded me of spegettio's tomato sauce. Cheese I would have loved as a 3 cheese blend. Have been here several times and always had a good Italian sandwich. The employees have always been friendly. Today, a new employee waited on me, made the sandwich and said$6.89. I gave hm $7.00 and he said Have a good day and walked away without giving me my change. The 11cents is certainly not a big deal but, the attitude is. Will probably not be back. If I do go back, I will insist on getting my change. I do hope that the owner reads this review because this employee will drive away business. They always have great food at Giovanna's Pizza. Sometimes Mike, the owner, can be a bit abrasive but he is truly very nice he just have to get to know them and it's a personality that just doesn't attract you at first but like I said once you get to know him do you understand it's just Mike and that's how he is. He Actually is quite a very nice man and will go beyond the call to ensure that you're satisfied. Everyone there works well together and knows what they're supposed to be doing at all times. Pricewise I guess they're average for the area but I don't order that type of food very often so I just know what they cost and it's manageable. They have booths no tables. There are a few spots at the counter bar but it's mainly if you're drinking and watching television. They do have a Freezer case in the front Of the restaurant as soon as you go in on the right hand side. They sell beer to go in bottles and cans and also things such as Four Loko's.And with in that case there's also a regular soda and diet soda if you're n looking for no alcohol. It's very family friendly however on the weekends it does get very busy so when you call and you will get a number. My suggestion would be to remember your number LOL. I've never had a bad experience there food wise but I will in the in the beginning before knowing Mike and his personality I found him to be very abrasive and I didn't wanna go back. But I gave him the benefit of the doubt and I'm glad I did. Highly recommend this place for all of your Italian food needs. read more

Our favorite pizza joint in Exeter. Awesome chewy pizzeria crust (why oh why does it never turn out like that when I make it??). We always have a hard time deciding what to order: our teenage boy loves the buffalo chicken pizza, our preteen girl wants the fancy white pizza with chicken cheesesteak as a topping (we special-order it - AHmazing), and Hubs has recently declared Giovanna's makes the best pepperoni pizza around - a hint of sweet with plenty of savory. Had the WORST sandwiches from Giovanna's tonight that we've ever had anywhere! We've been getting sandwiches and pizza here since moving to Berks County 8 years ago and the sandwiches have been great (their pizza is okay). But, for some reason, the sandwiches were horrible tonight. We usually get the same thing: California Cheesesteak, Cheesesteak Supreme, and Meatball with cheese. The California cheesesteak was okay, but there was no where near as much meat as they usually have. The Meatball sandwich had almost no sauce and was dry. The Cheesesteak Supreme was the WORST! It was supposed to have pepperoni, mushrooms, cheese, and onions. The only thing it had was VERY DRY meat and cheese.....that's it! No pepperoni, no mushrooms, and no onions.
