    Chicken Tempura Bowl
    Sarah P.

Girdwood Izakaya is a fantastic food truck that is often parked outside of Girdwood Brewing and is a great snack/meal that goes well beer! I had their chicken tempura bowl and I thought the chicken was delicious, I just wish there had been slightly more vegetables and a bit less sauce. The service was very quick and I'd recommend this to anyone at Girdwood Brewing or anywhere Izakaya might be parked.

Had the Salmon sushi at this food truck while we were at the Girdwood brewery. It was good, but not great. The wasabi was bomb!

The pork belly rice bowls are delicious. We highly recommend this place with a beer from Girdwood Brewery.

Excellent tofu rice bowl. Fresh, fast and truly hit the spot after a long day of hiking. Would highly recommend.

Ok sushi, lots of rice, not much fish, over priced, not made to order, service is not great. Nice location.

Mine may have showed up 20mins after my neighbor's. The quality of the food items were just ok. I had comparable sushi at another sushi restaurant a few blocks away. -Idiot Fish: The most exciting thing was the name. It was a pretty firm fish, no fat, and quite a few bones. -Sashimi Platter: 6 types, with 2 each. We got mackerel, yellowtail, tuna, salmon, white fish (snapper?), and octopus. -King Crab Roll: What I thought was the imitation crab was actually real crab. The coloring was so ...fake looking. It's not a bad roll, but I'm not sure the flavor of the crab came through. -Beef Steak Japanese Style: Big dish but awful cut of meat and had a semi off taste. Either freezer burn or the fridge. It was full of sinew and super chewy. -Herring Roe on Seaweed: This had a strange bitter aftertaste. I couldn't eat the beef after having this, it made the beef bitter too. It was a super fun texture though. Very snappy, very poppy. Only come here if you absolutely have the time for it. My dinner took about 3 hours, and there were 5 other tables.

Each dish is made with care and heart, the kind of comfort Japanese food that will have me returning. The hot sake and special sake (with salmon fin) were awesome -- a must-try! Downside: the wait for food and service can be very long, but Sam's a one-man operation -- and absolutely worth the patience! If you plan on bringing three or more people, be sure to reserve seating ahead of time. I definitely need to try the ramen menu next!

We've tried the seaweed salad, a couple of their sushi rolls, and an assortment of other items. My new favorite thing might be the crispy spicy ahi bites. Each bite a perfect size, so crunchy and with a thin slice of Jalapeño on top. I also enjoyed the steamed pork gyoza, each one super succulent and tasty. My husband tried the fried chicken thigh with tartar sauce, which was delicious. The chicken was super flavorful and the tartar sauce was like egg salad but worked with the flavors which was a nice surprise. We like splitting a large 22 oz bottle of Sapporo, but we have also liked ordering a small bottle of sake to share in lieu of dessert. The last time we went I got the gluten-free chocolate cake which was pretty good but laughably tiny in size ($10). Wait times can vary depending on the day you go and time, we've been seated immediately (party of 2) as well as waited an hour for a table. Speaking of which, you may be seated at their largest table which they also seat other parties, so it feels a bit communal as opposed to private. Sakura has maintained their quality in food over the years and their waitstaff are excellent each time we go. I always look forward to time spent here and you can't go wrong with anything you choose on the menu.
