I'm not a sushi/fish person, but I live in this neighborhood and feel guilty that I have neglected to try Ichiban, so I finally stopped in the other day. HOLY COW IS THIS PLACE CUTE!!! Compared to what the old photos on here reflect, the face lift they underwent this past year have made a huge difference. Since I don't generally eat fish and hadn't been here before , I needed an enormous amount of time to review the menu. The waiter was very patient and kind with me. I order some tea and radish norimaki while I was deciding what to get in the interim... it wasnt terrible, but I've had much better. It fell apart very easily which I have never had happen to me before, so that lost them a star. The presentation was very nice though- the ginger was beautiful and the wasabi was Wooo! The most authentic ever. I wasnt expecting the rush I got, I almost died!!! Their sushi menu is ENORMOUS. I decided to take my sushi loving kids back with me soon and try theirs and ultimately I chickened out and bought the only ramen offering they had. I suspect that was a mistake because it wasnt very good... it was very... Random tasting? Im searching for a word because it seemed unprofessional and like an attempt like I would do at home rather than what you would get at a Japanese restaurant. That said, I'm not discouraged, I knew I was taking a chance ordering outside their specialty. I will be back for follow up. read more

Good for fast Japanese but not the greatest quality. I was hungering for miso, so I got what I wanted. Their box meal is very generously portioned I think because I could not even finish. The tempura batter is a bit heavy and if you order to go it gets soggy in the packaging. What I wasn't a fan of was the salad because was just too over saturated in dressing to enjoy. For a fast Japanese option this was sufficient and much much cheaper than ordering from Benihana's. The sushi was also pretty good and a bit huge. I didn't like the low quality of chopsticks though, I hope they improve on that hopefully for ones that don't splinter and tear so unevenly. read more

The food was ok. Ordered the tuna poki and for the price it was so little not worth it at all. Order the boat that came with the rolls. The rolls weren't bad just extremely drenched in sauce, a little less next sauce. Salmon Hand roll was very fishy per my brother. They were stingy with the ginger and fake wasabi. Top-notch friendly service! Went here for an "I" restaurant (doing a monthly alphabet dinner out) with friends and what a local hidden gem! I had the delicious Beef/Chicken/Shrimp Tempura dinner and had lots of leftovers. We loved the edamame appetizer- served hot and fresh. Very generous portion. My hubby loved the Rainbow Roll - friends loved the pork katsu don and their tofu appetizer too. Clean with fun umbrellas decor and a semi-private large party room. I have traveled to Japan multiple times and the only place in Anchorage that I will eat Japanese food is Iciban! The food here is fabulous!

Sadly they got our order wrong and it was missing sukiyaki and the ichibqn roll didn't even have any eels in it. I admit we did place the order last minute, but the whole sukiyaki missing was rough for me and my family because we got back from a long day of travel issues and just needed something. Like maybe just cancel the entire order if you're not willing to cook it? The rice was good, but the Mongolian beef didn't have any veggies as pictured and it was too salty. read more

7 years later... it's time for an update! Visited Ichiban with my family and the food was very delicious. My salmon sushi and white tuna sashimi tasted so good and were cut to the perfect size. The light garlic topping on the white tuna really made it stand out. Our gyoza and tempura apps were also very tasty. Everyone enjoyed their meal here! Clean, cozy and cute interior. Ichiban on Tudor. Absolutely adorable inside. Service attentive and kind. Clean, neat and orderly. Cozy for a group or a date. Plenty of booths for couples or parties of 3 to 4. The decor is pretty amazing and the fish tank is a nice touch. Sushi is fresh. The spicy tuna hand roll, probably the BEST I've had in Alaska! I ordered take out of a salmon teriyaki and Tempura bento box, chicken Teriyaki combo and 2 spicy tuna hand rolls. The order was completed quickly and packaged ready to go. It was a total of $47 not including the tip I left. The Salmon Teriyaki was gross. The salmon looked weird color wise and it was not appetizing. The Tempura was cooked well but the sauce was tasteless. The side w Salad was good. The spicy tuna hand rolls were spicy but lacked overall flavor. I wanted to try some more of the sushi restaurants in town. I feel like I always gravitate towards the same ones so I'm trying to see if there's anything I'm missing out on. Unfortunately this was definitely not the most wowing find for me. I always am in this strip mall as I take dance class at studio pulse a few doors down. I saw this place offered a great boat deal on the Anchorage to go Facebook page so that's what pushed me to finally try it. The deal is any 5 rolls on the menu under $20 for $60. So the prices are definitely good. The sushi quality not so much. If you're a volume sushi eater who doesn't really care about the quality of the fish or the artistry of the maki you'll be perfectly cool with this place. Since we don't have any AYCE sushi joints in this state I know it can get pricey so good deals are always nice. I'd personally rather (begrudgingly) just pay more money for better fish quality. Some of the rolls were somehow flavorless, which is confusing as they all has several ingredients. The best thing I ate there was the spicy tuna hand roll. I would possibly give them another try not doing the boat deal, and seeing if the fish quality is better on their sashimi or nigiri, but I'm also hesitant to do that based on what I saw from the maki. The food was good. We had the spicy rainbow roll. Very nice. I had combo yakisoba which included shrimp, chicken beef and veggies, and my husband had the Mongolian beef with white rice. We entered and they said to sit anywhere. We chose a booth. At first they started to clean a table that was just leaving before acknowledging us. But they did bring water and menus. Fast paced service. But good for a date night if you want to have conversation without interruption. This would be one of my top 5 sushi restaurants in Alaska. Although the space is quite small and not the fanciest ambience (it's still very presentable and clean), their food quality and super friendly service is what puts them up there. We love their Ichiban, king kong, and pipeline roll. The chef absolutely knows what he is doing. Not to mention, their fresh oysters are some of the biggest and tastiest I've had in town and at a really great price! Please give this place a try if you're looking for a new sushi spot! The food is delicious and well made, they are the perfect amount of attentiveness, the inside is also very nice. My go to roll is the Hot Night roll and it's my all time Favourite, the miso soup is very tasty too. All of their rolls are unique and all the ones I've tried have been very good. I appreciate the specific descriptions of what's in them on the menu. Definitely worth a visit. read more

Gyudon was a let down, flavor reminded us of corned beef? Gyudon is such a simple and delicious dish when done right: simmered beef in dashi, soy, mirin alongside some onion, maybe a poached egg, and some pickled daikon. I've had it with veggies before, but it can be hit or miss. This was definitely a miss, reminded me of oyakodon with some soggy veggies. The sushi we tried was okay at best, the sake nigiri was insanely small, think 2 inches long and half an inch wide cut - I thought they'd forgotten the order initially. Sushi rice had that compacted soggy feel that you expect from premade rolls. The futomaki had decent flavor with a nice array of pickled veggies. Ichiban just wasn't for us! read more

My daughter suggested this place for lunch and thought this would be a good choice. The server provided excellent service but the food suffered from a variety of issues as listed below. 1. Miso soup tasted watered down and lacked flavor 2. Yakisobo Vegetable Noodles A. Micro vegetables and tasted over cooked B. Noodles were cold on outside but burning hot in the center as if microwaved C. Broth on noodles tasted substantially thinned and noodles had a hard center but mushy outside 3. The Avocoda roll my daughter had didn't look fresh at all and she confirmed it didn't taste fresh as well 4. Our order came out suspiciously fast (5 mins) probably due to time saving methods used in the kitchen I only hope these issues can be addressed and fixed in the future. read more

I went here with my coworkers for lunch. It is a small donning area but still roomy when you sit. They have booths and tables. We sat in a booth. I got oyakudon on the lunch special. The food and price I think are worth the money. I thought their prices were decent. I've also had the chicken teriyaki here and that was a good fish as well. This is a regular go to for me. Dine in or take out. I feel like it is a good place to meet a friend and catch-up because the ambient noise level is such that you can actually carry on a conversation. My favorite is the Berry Mountain Roll. The down grade to 4 stars instead of 5 is that when we ordered take out last and requested the chef to choose our 3rd roll, it included soft shelled crab that was literally fried to a crisp. But, it was nice that they sent one of the fancy cut oranges. That brought them back to a 5 for me. They are open for carry out - so support each other during the crisis. read more

So Ichiban just changed management, and the results are kind of a bummer. All the rolls I loved are gone (though your favorites might still be around if you eat eel), the fried rice is gone, and the homey feel of the interior is changed. One of the fastest places to get sushi delivered. However, on DoorDash... they advertise $0 delivery fee on orders $25+, yet they still charge a delivery fee. DoorDash doesn't accept responsibility for it and neither does the Owner of Ichiban. When you call Ichiban, they tell you it's not their problem and they hang up on you. We have visited this restaurant every time we come to Anchorage and are so impressed with the quality, flavor and service! We often bring my toddler grandson and the staff is exceptional with him. The salmon is cooked perfectly and with sooo much flavor. Every sushi roll we have had, we have ordered again. My husband has worked in a sushi restaurant for over 30 years so we definitely know good sushi! The last time we were in town we needed a quick takeout but we were ordering off of an old menu and the chef was so patient on the phone and willing to accommodate all of our needs perfectly. I ordered delivery just before closing and the food was awful. Do not order the near closing because the food was old the spider roll was inedible and the goyza was tough and dry as well. It looked like they took some old unsold food and dumped it in the styrofoam container. A couple of old shrimp tails was the only shrimp in the entire dish. My dog wou even eat it. Definitely not worth the $40.00 plus the additional cash tip. read more
