Just ordered a "pizza" to take out for my room, since I'm staying in the Madison Hotel, and I decided to use my $20 voucher. First of all, $16.50 plus $1.50 for mushrooms, even with sales tax, doesn't equal $20.88. I was told my balance was 88 cents. I was also told that if I paid the balance in cash, it would cost $1.00 because they don't give change. I could have used my card for the 88 cents. Seriously? I get the no penny issue, but not giving change? That has to be all kinds of illegal. I should say I don't give change, and should have walked away. So I get to my room, open the box, and it isn't even a pizza - it's a flatbread!!! I definitely won't be back!!!! read more

My wife and I came for lunch on a Tuesday, while travelling in New Jersey. It is in the Madison Hotel. We had to wait a little while as they don't open for lunch until noon. The room is quite fancy for a casual restaurant. I ordered the open-faced turkey sandwich, with gravy, mashed potatoes, and cranberry sauce. The turkey was sliced rather thin, but it was plentiful. Staff was really nice and attentive, but overall the food was just fine at the red dog Tavern. My favorite of the dishes that we ordered was definitely the Thanksgiving dinner special that everyone is recommending, but don't expect something revolutionary or better than actual Thanksgiving. Super convenient spot to eat if you're staying at the hotel next-door. I don't know this area super well so I can't say if I recommend it over other restaurants nearby but overall it was reliably fine food! read more

A few niceties but overall, much improvement needed. The restaurant is overall pretty cozy. We were seated quickly at a booth but the table light on the booth extends in front of guests so one can't see who they are speaking to across from them. The table was also very sticky. The wait staff was kind and efficient. Our drinks were fine. Nothing spectacular. Our mains were just a big miss. The churrasco was under seasoned, a bit tough, and the rice was just so plain. The price is $34. The pork chop was pretty good but the sweet corn risotto was so salty, it was almost inedible. This is $36. The lemon sole looked the best of all. Though I didn't try it, the fish looked nice. This is $28. It just an extremely expensive restaurant for what it is. We came on a Saturday night for dinner and there were some clear positives and a huge negative: Our waiter, Juan, was very pleasant and met our very need. From the time we sat down, it took about 70 minutes to get our main course, which was basically a hamburger and a cheeseburger. Juan apologized for the wait and did everything to try and assist (including comping us dessert, which was very good). The mushroom swiss burger was OK. The burger had all of the toppings that were planned. I loved the crab bisque soup and the cheesecake with a side of coffee ice cream. We had dinner at GKs Red Dog Tavern on 10/18/25. We had a group of four and we really enjoyed the food, service and ambience of this restaurant. My grandsons had burgers and fries which they loved. We ordered the pizza as an appetizer and it was really delicious. I ordered the chicken parmigiana which was great and a nice portion. My wife had the salmon and said it was very good. This place used to be great. I was there less than a year ago and the food and service were terrific. This time not so much. I brought a group of seven for an early business dinner on a Tuesday and it was so bad I was embarrassed for having suggested it. First, we tried to order drinks from their specials menu. The server came back and told us NONE of the specials was available because they required specials mixes that they didn't have. Appetizers were okay, with the lone bright spot being the calamari. Mains were not good. Two of the group ordered chicken pot pie - not much flavor in the runny filling. I had their famous pork chop and it was tough as leather. The hotel is gorgeous, but this restaurant is average. I ordered the veggie burger. It came with sweet potato fries. Neither was well seasoned. The waiter was awful--rude. Also he poured more water for two of us, but walked away before poring water for the person who asked him for it. Then he didn't take the dessert order of another person at the table. I was excited to try this place bc our dinner at Rods was so great. The atmosphere is warm, but the chairs are a bit rickety - I actually saw a woman fall out of hers. The temp was too cold in there, but maybe would have been better if we would have been sat farther from the door. The French onion soup flavor was excellent, but just way too much cheese. It was difficult to eat. Maybe serve with scissors. My dad gave the fish and chips a 6/10. He said the breading was soggy. They bring out the dishes on a tray with lids, so maybe the steam softens the breading. My steak sandwich was so good! Wouldn't change a thing. Fries are a little bland, but cooked well. The kids chicken fingers were burnt on the bottom. My mom's burger looked very nice, and was huge, but she said it didn't have much taste. The service was friendly and attentive for the most part. Stopped in here again with coworkers and had appetizers, calamari was good, the wings dry rub was excellent. The GK burger was ok, the bacon jam was good but the burger meat so-so and undercooked for medium well (was closer to medium rare). The Kobe beef burger looked good. Salad instead of fries had a nice balsamic and candied walnuts. Beers were good and had some great bottles and tap beers. A lot of IPAs, though. With all the great restaurants in the area, there is no reason to dine at GKs. Tonight we were seated at 7:20 and ordered drinks as we perused the menu. It took about 30 minutes to get our drinks, a beer and a glass of wine. We ordered when they brought the drinks. I ordered soup to start, which took 30 minutes to arrive. Our meals arrived about 40 minutes later. I took one bite of my baby back ribs and told the waitress "this is inedible". The kitchen obviously didn't slow cook the ribs and they were impossibly tough with little flavor. If you're not willing to slow cook ribs until they're very tender, don't put them on the menu. I sent back the ribs asked the waitress to bring me a burger, cooked medium. After about 15 minutes she brought me a burger, cooked at least medium well - no red in the middle. By this time my wife had completed her meal, so I scarfed down maybe 3/4 of the burger and was eager to get on with my life - two hours and $100 after we arrived. And when the service is that slow, shouldn't you offer your customers a round of drinks on the house? Seems like a pretty small price to pay. GKs atmosphere is nice, but if the food is sub-par, what's the point? read more

A terrific spot inside the Madison Hotel complex. A large wooden bar and stool seating along the shared wall creates a good space for mingling. The staff here is a big part of what made it fun - from the bartenders to management (thanks Steven) everyone went above and beyond to make sure the wedding after-party was as special as the event itself. The restaurant and its next door steakhouse were packed...and am guessing that this affected the flatbread pizzas (undercooked) we ordered for sharing. The burger and calamari were spot on. What's neat is that the steakhouse bar is steps away and both share a deep and varied wine list - 1/2 bottles and large format as well. Fun night! Great hangout spot for locals! read more

This place is in a hotel where I was staying in New Jersey and it was quite a surprise for a "hotel" restaurant. Had the "Thanksgiving" dinner special ( it wasn't November so, I was surprised). Dinner had all the trimmings and was delicious! Paired with a nice local brew lager, it was great! Followed up with coffee and pie for a most satisfying dinner indeed! Atmosphere was kinda hunting lodge, lots of wood, subdued tones, and a nice fireplace right next to my table. Specifically came just to try the French onion soup - because I'm definitely a critic when it comes to my French onion soup. I was very satisfied! They even gave me a bread basket (as if I needed more carbs), but I'm not going to say no to bread. Which may I add- they give you THREE kinds of bread: a crusty Italian style one, a flat seeded cracker, and a sweet walnut one. Judge a place by the quality of their bread options. After visiting the restaurant and its other Rods several instances, it was time to write a review. I truly enjoy coming here. It has become one of our go to meet up restaurants. The place is gorgeous being in the same venue with Rods Steakhouse but offers a more casual vibe with the same great food and drinks. Ive tried several items but my highlights and go to's are these: For the table we get the fig and pig flatbread. Very tasty and always a favorite. We ask for it well done because it can be soggy. Their crab bisque is tasty and a signature menu item and well deserved. Their burgers are solid especially their house burger. Service is something that can be improved. There were times we were looking for our server either with questions, more drinks to order, to refill water glasses or to pay the check. You're STUCK and tough (SOL) luck. In chronological order for our party of 9 visit of June 4 2019. This place is a Tavern with a happy hour. The wine pours are generous and a draft of microbrew is about $3.75. Good? Not quite. Only at the bar. But it's a Tavern I thought. That's what the name says. Don't call yourself a Tavern and limit your happy hour prices to the small bar area with minuscule seating. What a gimmic and the tables are a mere 5-15 feet away. Also a bit of a discriminating practice for a 'Tavern'. It wasn't possible for us to get 9 at the bar to get happy hour prices. Menu price for a draft beer? $6.50 minimum. And the server was SO PISSED OFF when I told her how screwed up that is. I then got up, went personally to the bar to get my $3.75 draft , and returned to the table. I think she wanted to tell on me. CRY BABY. We ordered appetizers, both of which required some form of serving utensils, neither of which did. We all ended up using our dinner utensils. Appetizer remnants were later picked up, as were most all of our utensils. On comes dinner for our party of 9. NO Replacement utensils. All but 2 of us made do without them for our sandwiches and flatbread pizza, while the other two borrowed from the couple clean forks not picked up. You would think the servers would look out for that, or at least when just about every utensil was previously picked up, they would be replaced. Too much to ask for the expected and obvious. 2 ordered the 'signature' Pot Pie. Both commented that the carrots and the chicken were so large that they needed to be cut to eat. I saw them - it's true. Guess what? No knife to cut them with. They didn't bother asking for what should be expected. The fries? All of us received the bottom of the bag(s). All baskets were mostly stuffed with 1 inch fragments. How does one pick those up and maybe dip in ketchup? Maybe use utensils that we don't have. Oh but wait? Those $7 Truffle fries. Those were not from the bottom of the bag because they cost $1 more than the $6 fries. Either way the fries are skinny, greasy, pathetic. A good Tavern has good fries. This is NOT a good Tavern. I ordered a black cherry Stewart's Soda. Haven't had one in years. It came with a cup of ice. Why the cup of ice? Because the bottle was WARM. So I poured warm soda into a glass of small ice cubes, melted the cubes and watered down my black cherry soda. All I can say is WTF?You're supposed to be a Tavern. You don't chill your drinks? Are your bottled beers not chilled too? That's our experience and as I said -You're STUCK and SOL. read more

We had a wonderful time here. We had a very early dinner reservation time just in case a Saturday night would be crowded. The food and drinks were delicious and prepared to perfection. Our server was very knowledgeable and attentive. We we're not rushed at all and told we did not have to feel like we had to leave to "make room" for other dinners despite the place "hopping". The service is always excellent, the food is ok (basically diner food) but the bar is the worst. The drinks are expensive and they really skimp on the liquor. I ordered a scotch on two different occasions and it came in a tiny glass filled with ice and not much scotch. It's unfortunate because I would go back if the drinks were more generous. read more

I was staying at the Madison Hotel for one night and decided to try the restaurant. They had a lobster roll and for the price, I was expecting a whole main lobster - tail, claws, and knuckles. Instead, the roll was filled with a lobster salad that had way, way more celery than lobster and what lobster was in it, was just tail. It tasted so strong of celery, you could barely taste the lobster. There was also hard bits of shell or something in the lobster salad, that made it less than ideal to eat. It's definitely the worst lobster roll I've ever had and for the price, it was a complete and total rip off. read more

Everything here was cold: beer, food and service. They share a kitchen with rods, but the service and standards do it translate. Waited 45 mins at the bar for a burger that was made long before the bartender felt like picking it up from the kitchen. The cheese was already melted and dried hard. The fries were cold and sad. Came here for a family birthday party which also happened to be St. Patrick's Day. It's connected to Rod's Steakhouse and it kind of looks like they share a bar (my boyfriend's Guinness came in a glass that said Rod's on it). This place is rustic and old fashioned and a great place to gather. Somehow we fit my boyfriend's large family at two long tables in the back room. It was a tight squeeze at the table since it's kind of a small place but we were fine. Our waiters were attentive and did their best to accommodate a large group. I thought the food was great! They brought out complimentary Irish soda bread to start. The "kid's table" ordered a large order of mild buffalo wings. They were more sweet than spicy, but they were delicious! Just the right amount of sauce that leaves you licking your fingers after every bite. The chicken itself I found to be soft and tender. I went with the shepherds pie, which it seems is only available on St. Patrick's Day because it wasn't on the menu. I had to ask the waiter about it since I overheard someone talking about it. I usually get really nervous ordering shepherds pie at new restaurants because it's not always done right. I'm super glad I chose this for my dinner though--ample amount of mashed potatoes, deliciously seasoned beef, and huge portion. They nailed it! I would've finished the whole thing had I not been so full already. Everyone around me seemed to enjoy their meals, too. Mainly everyone at the "kids table" ordered burgers. The patties were huge and thick. Although many of them weren't cooked how they were ordered, the burgers didn't sit around for too long. Thin, crispy fries were average but does the job. Overall I was pleased with the dining here! The two people walking around playing bagpipes and drums were a nice touch and kept us in high spirits. I'd surely come back! read more

Let me start by saying that GK's was good. I think the problem was me. I walked into the place with the memories of dinners past from Rod's. I know it's their first go into the world of "casual" dining but with that kind of pedigree I assumed I was going to be blown away. We started with the appetizer sampler which were pedestrian at best (this proved to be the most disappointing part of the meal, it gets better). The ribs and pulled pork, while tender, almost had no trace of being smoked. The wings were average fare, with the sauce having a hint of cinnamon and nutmeg. The turkey meatballs in chimichurri sauce were good though. For dinner my date got the shrimp scampi which was very tasty. The shrimp were cooked perfect and were decent in size as well, things were improving nicely. I got the prime burger with frites which which was very good. The meat wasn't playing a background role, it was front and center bringing a strong "beefy" flavor. Only minus was the brioche bun. I don't like brioche buns, there I said it. They look cute and pretty and every damn bar is using them now but they just don't perform well with burgers. We ended the meal with their "Spiked" Shakes. My date had the Black and White (chocolate ice cream, vanilla ice cream, chocolate chips and fresh whipped cream) which was spiked with two types of Godiva liqueurs. I had the Red Dog shake which was chocolate ice cream with red velvet cake and cream cheese frosting spiked with Stoli Vanilla. I recommend you not leaving the establishment without trying them, they were excellent. Pricing was very resonable as well. With everything I described above plus about 6 cocktails, the enitre bill was 100 bucks exactly. You will enjoy this place and the food as long as you do not expect the epicurean excellence of Rod's. I have been to this place 4x since my initial visit hoping I can match the original meal I had. Unfortunately I have left very disappointed. I have come to the conclusion the food is not good here. I have had the burger, cheesesteak (special), hotdog and calamari (off of the steakhouses menu). All have been disappointing. The buns have been stale like. What is saving this place is the bartenders who are friendly and quick. I really wanted to give this place a good review or keep my original review but I cannot. G K's Red Dog Tavern is a great new casual joint located in the Madison Hotel. The food at G K's was pretty fantastic. We started with an order of wings, which were done up in a homemade smoky-sweet sauce with just the right amount of heat (we tried the medium). As a buffalo wing connoisseur, I was very impressed...even the blue cheese was a step up from the typical dipping side. My girlfriend ordered the lamb burger, which was cooked to perfection and served with a side of creamy, cucumber-y tzatziki that completed the Greek impression of the dish (and left me with serious food envy). My full rack of baby back ribs was an impressive cut, but was slightly over-cooked. It wasn't enough to kill the entrée, but enough to notice. The sides of fries were above average and the coleslaw was a decent rendition. G K's atmosphere is classy, but with a casual comfort. I didn't feel out of place in my post-shore shorts and sandals, but I wouldn't hesitate to bring a date there either. The service was the only real negative to my experience. The restaurant wasn't very busy, yet our waiter was nowhere to be found. There's nothing worse than needing a tall glass of ice water halfway through a rack of ribs and having to wait ten minutes. There seemed to be the over-reliance on food runners that is currently trending in Morris County restaurants. Apart from the service and the over-grilled ribs, I was definitely impressed with G K's. With a little tightening up, this place could be a five-star Yelp. I'll definitely be back and have been recommending the restaurant to friends. read more

Three words sum up this experience for me. GO TO ROD's!! I went to Red Dog thinking I could get a meal of Rods quality with smaller portions on the cheap. No such luck. One glass of wine, one salad, and on entrée without sides ran $52. Afterwards I reviewed the menu prices between GK and Rods and found 1-2 dollar differences between the items. GK simply doesn't have the atmosphere that one would want with a $50 a plate restaurant. The seating is very tight and it feels small over all. My seat over by the Maitre'd station felt like I was out in the building foyer. The only upside I see to GK over Rod's is the speed of service. In the pub atmosphere one would expect tables to turn more quickly, and this is beneficial when dining alone. Otherwise I'll take Rods... read more

Truly the pinnacle of mediocrity. Average food made by average chefs for average suburban people. Bland food is one thing we're all used to but the poor service is what makes this place much worse. The only thing above average at the Red Dog is the prices, which approach those of midtown Manhattan. Of course, this place would not survive two months in the city. No one is in charge of the waitstaff and it appears that no one is in charge of this restaurant. The 20-something servers have no sense of service urgency or any desire to try to please guests - unless you're lucky enough to have a server who happens to be in a good, service-oriented, mood the day you visit, which happens in maybe 1 in 5 visits - about 20% of the time. My wife and I come here because it's convenient and close by. Truthfully, we'll continue to come here because of its proximity to our home. But if Morris Township were to allow more restaurants in Convent Station, competition would put this place out of business. It's great to be a monopoly when the township zoning board won't create any additional retail space. And it's great to be the only place in town, especially if you own this very average restaurant. PS- if you come to the Red Dog, the steak is one item that's fairly well done. Also the salmon is fresh because there is a lot of turnover as the kitchen is shared with the Madison Hotel- the catering group apparently goes through the salmon fairly quickly. read more

It's too bad that the Red Dog Tavern doesn't rise above the typical local country club food. That's not to say they don't have their charms.. I just couldn't find any. Their special of the day was Gazpacho. It tasted of canned tomato juice, hot chilies and chopped tomato. Missing was any hint of peppers, onions or olive oil.. or even red wine vinegar. It was clearly a failure. The lamb burger was every bit as tasty as their burger. which says to me instead of lamb, I may have been served beef. The "prime" beef burger was anything but. Devoid of flavor- the burger does not deserve the prime designation. Perhaps a trip to the Minetta Tavern in NYC would be a good field trip for the "top of his class' Johnson/Wales Grad chef. Minetta serves what I call a prime burger. It actually tastes like beef. The Red Dog Tavern version is neither. Too bad. To call this place a great new casual joint is false advertising. They need work in the kitchen. Unless you like camp food or country club food (or even prep school food) stay well clear. Sure they're packed, but that's not saying much. read more
