If you are planning a trip up here in the Summer…read moremonths, (which I would not come in Winter, it can be tough!), and you are staying in the General Area of Anchorage and or Seward, please make room on your agenda for a trip to this wonderment of mankind. The Glacier herself is receding, but the Parks area and camping facilities are placed in areas where all you can say is "Oh my God'. The scenery, the air, the "feeling" is something that is a once in a lifetime opportunity that should not be passed on. Please do not come if you are looking for "Showers", running water and 5 star hotels. There are Restroom facilities, conveniently located throughout the campsites, with Potable Water, but this experience is what camping/fishing is all about. Jenn and I and Jersey and Chopper stayed at Black Bear Campground, and for Motor homes there is the Williwaw Camp grounds. The campsites are clean, and deep rooted in the forest system. They are laid out by the Glacier rivers, which puts you no more than 50-75 yards away from the streams where you can watch the Salmon runs of all the Salmon breeds. You can't fish in that area, but fishing is just down the road. Have you ever woke up early in a beautiful sun drenched morning, and heard a running stream of water, and breath some of the cleanest air known to man, pour yourself a cup of campfire coffee, and just take in the beauty of the land. If you WANT to see bears, take an excursion. This is a beautiful trail with history--Alaska's first road. I was lucky as it was sunny the day that I hiked on this trail, but the weather can change quickly to pouring rain, so coming prepared is a must. The scenery is absolutely worth it!

Even though I got stuck in the middle of a zip line, between our zip line adventure and our visit…read moreto the sled dog musher's camp in the same day, it was hard to imagine a more perfect day in Alaska. The trip here started with a motor boat trip past pretty pretty scenery (see the picture I uploaded of a stream trickling down the mountain) to an abandoned gold mine. So far it's sounding like a Scooby Doo episode, but sadly there's no Ghost of Yukon Joe scaring off young whippersnappers from stealin' his claim. From there you're driven in an ATV up the steepest incline ever (30 degrees?) to the zip lines. This was our first time ever zip lining and I was afraid I'd be afraid, but I felt very calm the entire time and very safe, and was more interested in looking around while in the air. We considered zip lining on our honeymoon in Thailand - I'm sure the place in Thailand was insured, right? - but we decided to do it in the States instead so we wouldn't die. Our two guides carefully showed us everything we needed to know and then we were off, flying through the rainforests. We were told some segments took 30 seconds to zip across. I'm not sure if that's an exaggeration or if time felt like it passed faster while we were doing it. The highest segment was 180 feet off the ground. So yeah, I did get stuck in the middle of one of the lines. My glove got caught in the mechanism at the top of the zip line. Thankfully I wasn't scared - I just thought it was funny - and one of the guides rescued me. Our group of 8 - 6 strangers and ourselves - was pretty awesome. It even felt like the instructors wanted to hang with us, like we were the coolest group ever. The instructors warned us about banging into each other since we're all attached to the same lines, and after that there were a lot of banging jokes. It was noted that if you don't move your hand away in time after zipping down one of the lines you could get "finger banged." Our guides were really fun and one (Tyler?) would punctuate sentences by suddenly flying off down a zip line. If you thought smashing a phone down was a good way to punctuate a sentence, you've never seen someone suddenly fly away. You can bring your camera (hence all my photos attached to this Yelp review). You can also have one of the guides shoot a video for you of what it's like to zip down one of the lines. At the end of the zip lines there's a really high suspension bridge that makes for great photo ops, and then you get to repel down from the platform. When it was all over we were given medals and a snack. We felt like contestants on The Amazing Race for the afternoon.

This was soooo much fun!! It was a rainy, cold day in…read moreJuneau, but I really feel like that made the experience even more memorable. Maggie and Riley were great guides through the course and encouraged anyone that was feeling a little scared. I mean, you're hundreds of feet up trees with a cable holding you! The excursion started with a a boat ride to the beach and then you take a short walk to the base camp to get all geared up and ready to go! After that, you take a ride in a Mercedes 4x4 truck, up the mountain not before you take a group photo, though : and from there you take a slightly steep short hike up the mountain to arrive at your 1st practice zipline. After you get the practice line out of the way, it's all awesomeness that follows! The views are amazing and the thrill of zipping on a 180ft line at 35mph is indescribable! Oh, and the suspension bridges are pretty awesome too...although they were the scariest part for me lol. My husband and 14 y/o daughter also did the excursion and loved it as well. We'd do it again and you won't regret taking a few hours out of your day to have this once in a lifetime experience! P.S. You even get a nice medal at the end of the tour to prove you "survived"! :) Great touch!

The van came and picked us up for the helicopter ride to the dog sledding. It was so easy to arrange this. So easy and it is slightly less than the cruise line. For is it made a difference we paid for 7 people. The helicopter ride was about 15 minutes to the Hebert glacier, the dog sledding was about 44 minutes. It was so beautiful, our guide was great! I would recommend this. I wish I took more photos. This was a total of 2.5 or so.

One of the best experiences of my life!…read more We had to helicopter to the top of a glacier (Hilbert) to get to the dog camp, and as we circled the camp, I could see the dogs. I got so excited I could barely wait for the chopper to land! When they opened the doors to let me out, I forgot to detach my headset, and when I jumped out, the cord pulled me back in. Pretty hilarious! My feet hit the ground, and I was off, and I was so excited that I fell on my face. I got up and ran again, and boom! Down I went I again! When I finally met the guides (all dressed in fur hats, tshirts, and boxer shorts--it was a warm day atop the snowy/icy glacier--60 degrees F!), they were all hugs and smiles and said they'd never seen anyone so excited to be there. It's a pricey trip, and we were nervous that it might be a rip off, but our fears were instantly alloyed. Our guide, a very cute young man from Georgia, introduced to our sled team--twelve dogs in all. We got to spend lots of time with each dog, and most were really playful, and chomping at the bit to get sledding. Our guide took the time to show us all the maneuvers on the sled and how to adjust the ropes, and off we went over the beautiful glacier fields. We also got to talk to Sebastian, the proprietor of the kennels, and it is clear how much he loves the dogs, and how much they love him. The price is worth the scenery alone. Save up for this one and skip the ones where do they "sled rides" in wagons.

Alaska is one of the most heavily glaciated areas in the world outside of the polar regions…read more Approx. 23,000 square miles of the state are covered in glaciers--an area nearly the size of West Virginia. They tell stories of the Earth's history, shape the Earth's surface as they move and form valleys and mountains. A remnant of the last ice age cradled high in the Coast Mountains' lofty peaks, the Mendenhall Glacier, named after a noted scientist who served on the Alaska Boundary Commission, is one of many major glaciers that connect to the vast ice field in Juneau, where we arrived this morning as our second port of call. This was our first excursion given by the Norwegian cruise line. My partner and I took a tour bus to the Mendenhall Glacier from our cruise ship. It was about a 30-minute ride. The tour guide did a nice job in keeping us informed. Upon arrival, most visitors walk down to the shoreline by the lake to see this awesome spectacle at Photo Point. If one has never seen a glacier before, this is definitely worth your time.

The hike is really not that difficult. Its a pretty short day hike of around 5 miles round trip and i believe to spot we went to with the group was around 800 feet of elevation gain. I found it to be a relatively easy trail but the people in my tour group were slow and many found it to be challenging. There are some chains to help you get up some of the uneven spots. Of course as with any hike be prepared, have water, snacks, good shoes. I would definitely come back here in the future but I would want to finish the hike all the way up to the top. Did not really see anyone else out on the trail other than our tour group. This was a weds morning.

It…read morewas a bummer to be placed with a family with 2 small kids because they ruined some of the experience to me. (Kids not following guides directions, being impatient, and just whiny) Guides Wyatt and Alex tried to bring some humor to the zipline process. Their zip lines are not as intense as others I have done. It's nice they do the braking for you. Fun thing to do, going zipping through the trees!
