Mixed feelings about this place. They don't speak English which is kind of a problem when trying to communicate what you want. If you're a Spanish speaker, you'll have no problem at all though. I put on my dress and she measured it. When I went to change back into my regular clothes, I realized the dress wasn't zipped all the way when she measured. I wish she had checked everything thoroughly before measuring to catch my mistake. Amazingly quick turnaround time, it was ready the same day. The hemming is well done and they were very nice. Reasonable prices. However now my dress is too tight at the bust and I ripped it a bit at the zipper from the incorrect measuring, and didn't feel I could easily communicate that to her due to the language barrier. read more

I thought about if I should write this review. I'm just still so upset. I brought my wedding dress to be hemmed and gave a month time. The dress was simple, just wanted to hem the length but wanted to leave it longer in the back for a train. She pinned the length I wanted. When I picked up they literally just cut it straight across. She didn't speak English and used Google translate but when I asked what happened to the train, she said something like "no, couldn't do it". I was confused, flustered, paid and left. If you couldn't hem it to what I asked why would you not call/ text me to let me know BEFORE doing anything. Not having that train, that little part took a lot from the style of the dress. It's 3 weeks before my wedding... I ended up buying another completely different dress with such a time crunch I settled for the next best thing. I brought in a beautiful gown that needed to have the entire upper lace overlay redesigned to custom fit me, as well as hem the length and train. Due to my dress arriving so late from overseas, I was so stressed and under pressure that I wouldn't be able to get alterations done in time for my wedding -- on top of which I had no back-uo gown for! My brother and SIL had a grooms woman dress made for me in China in preparation for their wedding. They mailed it to me, and I couldn't zip up the top, and I wasn't even sure that it could be altered with the unique style. I was leaving on vacation 2 days later on the way to the wedding. Boy, was I panicked. I found this seamstress here on Yelp, and I had nothing to lose. She and her assistant/intern acknowledged my predicament of being pressed for time and evaluated how they could reconstruct the bodice of the dress into a new style. I liked the plan, and they agreed that they could be ready in 36 hrs for a second fitting. I arrived around 9am a couple of days later and the dress was nearly perfect with a new elegant style that fit and was better than the original dress! She completed the second fitting and told me to come back in an hour, and it would be complete. The magic was in the service and the dressmaker's expert experience. The lady at Fancy Alterations in the Redwood City area quoted me $600 for a bustle and I reiterated that I can lose weight pretty easily and that I WILL lose at least 10lbs before the wedding. So when I went back for the first alteration appt, she said it looked fine and to take it home because I didn't lost the weight yet. The sweet woman that helped (I'm guessing the owner) was fantastic. She was patient with me and had my shirts ready so fast. I am a large guy and have a large neck so all the dress shirts I wear look like a poncho. She took off 2"+ on both sides of my shirts for only $25 each! I love this woman. She is Brazilian, and can tailor and contour to curves like your favorite bikini on Ipanema beach. She can even create curves sans going under anesthesia. For those of us simpering sex pots that like to toe the line between Basic Instincts and Basic Etiquette, she can artfully sew you within millimeters of impropriety. What? *fluttering eyelashes* It ain't trickin' if you got it, son. I took in three mid to high end designer dresses (Diane VonFurstenberg, Tahari, and a Matthew Williamson number) for my first foray with Socco's sewing. There is a slight language barrier, which is easily overcome with wild gesticulations, profuse bending over to grossly dramatacize wardrobe malfunctions that I don't want, and the beloved human safety pin type tailoring that involves grabbing swaths of extra fabric, tying knots, and saying "This is what I do want - but can you make it look like not a knot?" (this was bewilderingly understood) One week later, Socco called to tell me they were ready. I was so thrilled when I tried them on. They were gorgeous! Also, I have a new weight management tool. I won't be able to gain an ounce for these fine frockeries, and they're so gorgeous they took my appetite away. Really do not recommend. First, it was $150 to have two bridesmaids dresses altered which is more expensive than I've paid before. Second, I picked a date for it to be ready three weeks away. When I showed up, they hadn't been touched. I was told they would be ready the next day. When I came back two days later, the straps still weren't altered correctly and needed to be shortened more. When I picked it up the next day, I needed to just take it because I was heading to the airport for the flight. The straps were still not hemmed properly and continued to fall down all night, and the dress was too long. I would say, find somewhere else to go. read more

It was super simple, I came in with my dress, put it on, and explained what I wanted - a hem and to shorten the straps. She pinned a bit of the hem and the straps, i got out of the dress, and chose a date I needed it done (in about a week and a half!). In and out in less than ten minutes. Socorro wrote them all down for me and was so friendly, even though I wasn't using her services at the time. When I needed a bridesmaid dress altered, I knew where to go. Based on the reviews I've read about this place, I went there to repair a couple of my shirts and pants. Her work was so good that my shirts and pants looked like they were never touched, I was not even able to see where exactly the repair was performed. Socorro is an absolutely amazing seamstress and her prices are, frankly, way too low! I have been taking most of my clothes to her for a year. I love high end designer fashions on sale (Akris, Chloe, Alexander McQueen, Max Mara, Stella McCartney, etc.) and have Socorro tailor it to my body to fit like a glove. Everything from hemming pants, skirts, dresses, as well as shortening sleeves on blouses and dresses, to taking in the sides of dresses, skirts or pants, and even the shoulders of dresses and blouses.
