I really don't know under which circunstances some people like the food of this restaurant (and believe me, not even the beers we had at the brewery helped to make the food taste better) but it didn't make the cut for us. We haven't been to Switzerland yet but I think we can recognize when something taste really bland, burned or greasy and everything we tasted had either one thing or the other. Very dissapointing. I had the perch sandwich which had two breaded fish fillets and two slices of swiss cheese and on the side lettuce, tomato and tartar sauce. Very greasy and bland, all I tasted was oil. For my side I asked for their famous "roesti"(a potato pancake with dots of yellow and white cheese) also, very greasy and the bottom was completely burned, WOW. My hubby had a ribeye, he asked for medium well and it was rare, we let the waitress know about that and she took it back, second chance, it was exactly the same! And we had to pay $30 for that, WOW. The two stars are for a potato bacon soup we had, that was the only good thing we had there. It is unbelievable how a restaurant do not pay special attention to the dishes they serve to customers, I don't think we will be back. read more

I loved the Glarner Stube! The atmosphere is awesome - wood floors, the wood beams on the ceilings...cute little place. Come early because this place gets packed. We got lucky and got a table for 2 around 5 p.m. on a Saturday night (the only open table by the way). I had a (very well made) old fashioned that even came with a cinnamon stick. We ordered the cheese fondue, the hash brown potatoes (roesti) and the schnitzel - it was all delicious! I have no complaints about this place and I can see why folks sit at the bar enjoying their drinks not having a care in the world as to when their table is ready - there's a wonderful atmosphere here. Oh and our waitress was excellent - I'd have to guess she's worked there awhile - she did a great job and never missed a beat! We can't wait to come back!! read more

This is little Switzerland! Fabulous fondue. Great service. Feels like a restaurant in Europe.

It gets annoying listening to folks call Roesti potates "cheesy hash browns" since those items are not the same (thank God), but oh well. Been there many times, heading back this weekend for wife's birthday. About the only thing I haven't had on their menu is the fish fry, which a couple of reviewers here didn't like, and gave Glaner Stube a low rating. Too bad, because this little secret nestled in the rolling hills of southern WI in the quaint Swiss-like town of New Glarus, WI is a fantastic bar-restaurant. Every entree is superb, especially their signature, dry-aged in house 22 oz bone-in ribeye steak. Wow. But beware: Pricey. You get what you pay for and at the Glarner Stube, you definitely get what you pay for. Their prime rib (not offered every night) is to die for. Their other steaks like the NY Strip - also pricey but huge - is delicious if that's your cut of meat. It is my wife's cut, so she always orders it. The scallops are tasty, the Wiener schnitzel is delicious, as just about everything else I have ordered. The fondue is a great appetizer and plenty of it (pricey), their mainstay Swiss vegetable soup is delish as well as their soups of the day. If you like Brandy Old Fashioneds, you get them here. Man. I can't say enough about this place and really, to get a steak like their 22 oz bone-in, you have to go to a Ruth's Chris or a good steak restaurant in Madison (such as Rare Steakhouse), Milwaukee, Chicago or NYC. I've eaten all over the US on business and in some of the best steak joints in NYC, and they don't have all that much on the Glarner in quality - and you'll pay for it. That's not to say you're going to get out of the Glarner Stube cheap, especially if you order their signature steak and have an appetizer and a drink. For 2 for dinner, expect your bill on the low end (cheaper entrees) to run around $50, and closer to $125 - $140 on the high end. But believe me, you won't regret having gone there. The one bad thing I will mention is they do not take reservations. If you're headed there on a Fri or Sat, expect up to an hour wait unless you get there before 4:30 pm or after 8 pm. Just the way it is. Not a big place and it's in high demand. Deservedly. read more

This is our third visit. Our first was when we "discovered" it by accident about 2 1/2 years ago. This is located in our favorite WI town, New Glarus! The Swiss architecture in this tiny village and the church, little park, shops, restaurants, and bakery, always makes this a fun place to visit. The restaurant is in an old building that fits into the Swiss architecture of the village. When you step inside it is like you've been transported to Switzerland! The bar is in a long narrow room with old, dark, wood floors and light-colored wood planked walls on which Swiss pictures hang. On long narrow shelves along the top of the walls sit Swiss beer steins and other nicknacks. The dining room is in the back, past the bar, with a similar decor (There is also an old wooden crossbow hanging on the wall!) and rough hewn wooden posts and beams. We were sitting at a small wooden table for two and a waitress promptly came by to tell us the night's special (Sauerbraten) and give us water. We ordered the special to share (NO SPLIT CHARGE!) with soup and salad. For sides we red cabbage and Roesti (The excellent Swiss cheesy potato hash browns kind of thingy.) Our special came with green beans, too. The waitress brought us bread and butter as we were waiting for our meal. The bread was excellent! It was a French demi baguette roll that had a chewy exterior and the inside was light and airy with Swiss cheese-like air holes. (They do not make their own bread, but they chose wisely. The bread is from Tribeca Oven, a company that specializes in artisan breads.) The soup was their "Swiss Vegetable". It was like minestrone with chunks of fresh vegetables, but also had swiss cheese melted throughout. It was great! The salad was chopped green leaf lettuce with cheesy croutons, sliced tomatoes and cucumbers. We ordered it with bleu cheese dressing which was mostly bleu cheese and not a lot dressing...Great! (It guess the Swiss are all about cheese. No wonder the Swiss love Wisconsin "cheese heads!) Our waitress offered to bring some extra bleu cheese, so we went for it! We basically ended up with a bleu cheese salad! Our Sauerbraten was served spilt on two plates and both presented nicely with long, lightly steamed green beans and long slices of marinated beef drenched with thick, rich brown sauce. Our red cabbage was served in a small serving cup and the Roesti totally covered its own dinner plate like a huge, thick pancake. Everything was fantastic and even though we had shared we couldn't finish everything. After dinner we enjoyed a nice walk around the village, before we had to head off into the night. We look forward, again, to our next visit to New Glarus and Glarner Stube! read more

This was the top rated restaurant in New Glarus and seemed to have the best "Swiss" feel to it. The place is chock full of tchotchkes and kept the kids eyes wandering. We got the potato pancake, schnitzel sandwich and prime rib. They were all pretty good. Our one disappointment was the cheese curds, which looked promising, but many of them were cheese less. I guess the burst open in the fryer and the cheese leaked out leaving you a greasy dough puff. If we hadn't had that disappointment (our first Wisconsin cheese curd, so expectations were high) I would have given it 4 stars. read more

After spending the afternoon at New Glarus Brewery, we were hungry and wanted to get something to eat. We were given two passes for a free drink from various establishments in the town itself. I asked at the brewery what location had the widest selection of New Glarus' Beers I was told here and another place, but this one was the "classier" of the two. We were able to find it easy enough, but finding a parking spot was difficult. Its street parking only and we just happened to luck into a spot someone had just vacated down the street. From the exterior it keeps up with the Swiss theme of the town. Walking in, I was surprised by the size of it. This place was tiny. It was almost like someone put a roof over an alley, with a bar in the front and a small dining area in the rear. The bar ran the length of the left side of the bar and there was just enough room on the right side for people trying to get to the back to get by without bumping into patrons sitting at the bar. We sat at the bar. It had a copper sheeting top on it. I liked the look of it, but at the seams where the copper sheets met it was soldered together messily. The solder was lumpy and caused the top to be uneven. Make sure that you take care if you are sitting at one of the seams and you set your drink down, it can get... interesting. The bar atmosphere was nice enough. It was relatively clean, but could stand some dusting in some of the higher places. I'm sure that when this place was originally built it was beautiful, but it looks like it may need some updating. Polish some stuff up, refinish the wood, etc. Other than that, it had a nice Swiss cottage feel to it, including the faux hearth over the cash register. The only beer they had on tap was from the New Glarus Brewing Company. SCORE! I love that they didn't even offer anything from any other brewery on tap. You could get it in a bottle if you wanted, but if you are in New Glarus... why would you want to do that? The free pints are in these small 8 ounce glasses. Hey, free is free so I'm not complaining. The menu has a German/Swiss theme to it. My wife and I both had the bratwurst with sauerkraut and a side of German Potato salad. The Kraut was excellent! I don't know if they made it themselves, but if it's store bought I want to know what brand. The brat itself was good, it was a little milder in flavor than I'm accustomed to, but I'm not complaining. The German potato salad was excellent. Again, I'm pretty sure this was homemade, but I could be wrong. We were satisfied with our meal. The service was a little spotty. The bartender seemed a little gruff and I think he was surprised two non-locals sat at the bar. We didn't go long without drinks; our food was brought out in a timely manner. Stopped in while taking a little weekend "getaway" to New Glarus in January. We stayed at the Chalet Laundhaus Inn, which had a convenient path behind the hotel that leads to the main streets with restaurants, shops and bars. It only seemed right to go here, as to experience the whole Swiss WI deal. A bit expensive, but well worth the food and kitsch. Definitely order the roesti potatoes, I had never even heard of them before. They were even better mixed with my sauerkraut. My boyfriend ordered some type of cinnamon pork soup (it sounded too weird to pass up), and it was delicious. After eating, it was such a cozy atmosphere that we stayed a while. I ordered a hot drink, I think hot chocolate with rum maybe? I couldn't find it on their online menu, but I would definitely recommend any of their hot drinks during the winter. We had such a nice time, we asked if we could purchase a couple of their "Glarner Stube" pint glasses. Someone came out (possibly the owner?) and sold us a couple for $5 each. The wait staff was also very sweet, and we stopped and chatted for a while with our waitress at the bar. She recommended a couple bars within blocks, which we did follow up on after. This restaurant was one of the best parts of our trip to New Glarus. Will definitely return if I visit the town again. read more

If you're driving through New Glarus, the little Swiss town in Southern Wisconsin, this is a great place to stop for some authentic European fare. I split the Pork Schnitzel Sandwich and the Wienerschnitzel with a friend. Both were generous delicious portions with a large helping of hot and tasty french fries on the side. As a bonus, they have quite a variety of New Glarus Brewing Company beers on taps to wash down your delicious Lunch. LOVED, LOVED, LOVED the food! Wiener Schnitzel, roesti and soup were fantastic! There was so much food, we didn't finish! I would have loved to try the fondue, but with two people and a huge entree coming, we just couldn't. The New Glarus beer was great, and only $4 pint! This was so much better than Berghoff's in Chicago. I wish we had a Glarner Stube here! The only complaint was the wait - about 45 minutes. It's small and doesn't take reservations. Not good! If I could give this place a zero I would. What is up with all of the fabulous reviews? I'm thinking that people who like this place haven't developed a sophisticated enough palate to know what good German/Swiss food is OR as an earlier reviewer stated, they probably like the food because they come inebriated from the bar next door and anything tastes good by that point. I have traveled all over Europe and this place does not come close to authentic and tasteful German food. I ordered the rueben sandwich and it was soaked in grease. I looked at the bottom of my hands where I was holding the sandwich and my hands were shiny and slimy from all the grease. Gross! The corn beef was flavorless and fatty. The french fries were okay. The only thing edible on my plate was the pickle. My mom had the portabello mushroom sandwich which too was flavorless. The cabbage and German potato salad were overpowered by vinegar and not in a good way. My dad ordered the Wiener schnitzel which was dry and flat tasting. It honestly looked like someone pounded it to death with a mallet, dipped it in a fryer, froze it and reheated it in the microwave. The vegetable soup was insipid and greasy. The only word that I can come up with to describe this place is unsavory. Also, come prepared with a fly swatter. I cannot even begin to tell you how many times I had to swat flies away from my food. Makes me wonder how clean the kitchen is. One thing I usually do before eating at a restaurant I'm not familiar with is to check out their bathrooms. Believe it or not the cleanliness of a bathroom says a lot. After getting seated my mom decided to use their facilities, but the women's washroom was out of service. She had to use the men's washroom and she couldn't believe the size of the urinal. It was like floor to ceiling size which means there was a mess all over the floor. It smelled and looked disgusting. She looked mortified when she returned back to the table. Our experience went downhill from there. The only attribute saving this place is the service (and pickle), which is the reason for the one star. Service was very prompt and efficient. Our server was pleasant. All in all we left here $50 poorer and my dad ended up with heartburn. read more

This place was packed and that was all my husband needed to decide this was our place to eat lunch. The staff was very nice. Despite these factors, I just couldn't pull the trigger because every German offering was veal and the offerings weren't authentic. The fondue lives up to the hype! They made a perfect old fashioned, love the cinnamon stick included. The veal was delectable, and kudos to using fresh seasonal green beans in an oft forgotten side. Great food, great selection of New Glarus beers on tap (as well as others). I was impressed that their selection of New Glarus beers on tap was more extensive by far than the selection AT the brewery! They have $2 glasses and $4 pints, which I thought was a good size selection. We shared the cheese fondue and schublig (a beef sausage, which came with an order of roesti, the swiss cheese/hash brown concoction) among three people, which proved to be the perfect amount of food. The sausage was tasty but a bit plain, and we really liked the mustard and horseradish (tasted good but did not burn) that came with it. The roesti was perfectly cooked and I liked the ratio of cheese to potato. The cheese fondue was spot-on - nothing unusual but well put together with excellent bread chunks (we asked for a little bit more to finish off the pot). I really liked the feel of the restaurant too - you enter through a cozy bar area that had the football game on when we went through, and then get to the comfortable restaurant area. Resturant was recommended by the staff at the New Glaurus brewery and it did not disappoint, as a bonus we each got a free beer as well to drink at the restaurant as well from New Glaurus brewery. The restaurant is located in the middle of the very quaint downtown of New Glaurus which is worth exploring after you eat, it isn't very large but worth the stroll. As for the resturant is fairly small maybe seating for 50-60 people including the bar decorated in German / Swiss country theme and antique cheese making tools. We ordered the meat and cheese plate , pork schnitzel sandwich and flank steak sandwich. All were very good but the flank steak sandwich and German potato salad were by far our favorites. They also are home to the largest urinal in the Midwest if you have a desire to scope out this little gem of a roadside attraction while you are there and honestly who wouldn't : ) read more

I once wrote a very negative review about this place. After reading all the good reviews I thought that perhaps I was in a different restaurant. Recently I was in New Glarus and checked out Glarner Stube and it was the place that I had an absolutely terrible meal. This was quite some time ago and after looking over the menu I could see that the meal I once had was no longer on the menu and that the menu had changed quite a bit. Thank goodness. In fact the menu had some very nice selections. I chose one of the veal dishes which was very good. I will try them again next time I am through. It is a cute place but a bit crowded. We started our meal with the cheese curds, which were excellent. Enough to feed 4-5 people. My wife had the steak sandwich, which was salty, slightly greasy and a bit fatty in spots. Her side was the Roesti, which we were excited to have. Sadly, it disappointed. It was VERY greasy. Such a shame, as I mentioned, we were really excited to have. I had the pork schnitzel sandwich, which was excellent. I ordered the side of the Roesti, which never did arrive (thankfully). My wife and I discussed and came to the conclusion that the waitress believed I said I would share the Roesti with my wife. I said "I will also have the Roesti." I was charged the $3 for it but because how bad hers was, it's ok. Happy to do without. The beers were good, but not as cold as I would like. Went for Saturday dinner. Was told to arrive early or we would be waiting. We arrived just before 4pm, no problem getting table for two. Very small dining room, a squeeze for large groups or families with small children. They can maybe seat 30-40 people, so obviously this creates congestion at peak times. You have to walk through bar to get to dining. I ordered the special, prime rib sandwich for $9 and a $3 "upgrade" side of wedge salad. Spouse (Michele) ordered the 22 ounce Ribeye with side of Roesti potatoes, house salad, and green beans $45. Steak was really impressive to look at and tasted great, fresh green beans, very pretty plate and delicious. Spouse ate it all. Both salads very fresh/crisp and served on chilled plates. Vinagrette was excellent. Fresh and delicious bread/butter brought before meal. Waitress asked if we wanted more bread with meal. Non alcoholic drinks are $2 free refills. Prime rib sandwich like no other I've seen. One large steak is cut 1/3" thick, not a bunch of thin slices. Really good. Comes on hoagie bun with pickles and horse raddish sauce on the side. It was very good. Spouse liked roesti potatoes, Im not a fan. Saw table next to us with fondue pots. Looked like something fun to order, but it's $18 or something and its a lot of bread, so I would not do it with table for 2. 1/2 pound burgers with one side start at $8. Negative....salads with meat were (if I remember right) $14 to $18...that threw me. I never saw one, but that would have to be one great salad for that kind of price. Cheese curds $11 for a plate. Probably about a dozen large curds on the plate. Did not order but saw a lot of people get them. I also thought price on that was a bit high. Total bill, 2 dinners (one special), one non alcoholic drink, upgraded side....$62 and change. "Biker" town (bicycles) due to trails. Every shop near restaurant closes at 5pm except a really cute floral shop, Brenda's. I would go back, but I would not take kids or a group larger than 5 or 6. If you find yourself wandering the winding European-esque streets of New Glarus, Wisconsin, feel free to pass on through the Glarnerstube, a pleasant and relaxed european restaurant and bar. This has to be one my favorite bars. Dark wood, comfortable vibe....it's like kickin' back in a Chalet buried in Swiss alps or something. The food is always really solid, being mostly Swiss-German stuff. I was quite curious about their house-cured meats plate...but didn't get around to it this time. One MAJOR bonus is that they have a ton of New Glarus beers on tap and you can buy a little tapper glass for a couple of bucks. I love that about Wisconsin. read more

This place is great! First time in New Glarus, so I went to trusty Yelp to find somewhere to grab dinner. This place obviously stuck out, and I'm glad it did! New Glarus on tap for $4 pints (awesome! Especially coming from Chicago). The atmosphere was cozy and warm, especially nice when it was raining outside. The bartender was so sweet and remembered my name, which always gets bonus points - haha. Food was super tasty (I had the Weiner Schnitzel), I will say though that the portion sizes are GIGANTIC. I don't think I ate 1/2 of my food, which was sad. And I may have left with about 5 lbs of fat added to my waistline, but that's okay ;) Sometimes taste wins over health. Great place. We stopped here on a whim and it was very satisfying. Prices range from $6-9 for sandwiches to $15-25 for the main dishes. Most of the sandwiches were good. This says "Little Switzerland" all over it. Tip: Great place to sample New Glarus beer, as they have about 6 kinds on tap... and it's like $1.75 for a 8oz. glass. Warning: they use a lot of sauerkraut on anything that has it. Also, the fondue app is gigantic. Easily enough for 8-10 people. Oh, and watch out for the urinal... it'll get you. read more

Service so nice, it'll make you yodel!! What a great spot for lunch, dinner, drinks, or just snacks! Very casual, very old school, and very old world. Most of the decor looks like antiques, but I'm guessing they have been in here since long before you could call them old. Our server was so nice, I was tempted to ask here if she wanted to by my new Grandmother. Being in the heart of New Glarus, the menu is slanted toward Swiss-German specialties such as Kalberwurst, Fondue, Roestti, and Wiener Schnitzel. You'll also find your more typical Midwest hearty fare such as steaks, chops, burgers, etc. We had a prime rib sandwich which happened to be the special of the day. For about $11, is was a pretty great choice. You'll find a good selection of beers (of course, mostly New Glarus varieties) and a full bar, which is spectacularly vintage btw. In the men's room, there is a vintage urinal the size of a bathtub set on it's site. Apparently in the women's room, there is a boudoir photo George Costanza. The choice is yours. read more

We went here on the recommendation of our Wisconsin friends who introduced us to New Glarus beer. The food was incredible. We ordered way too much. The fondue was superb!! The cheese flavor was so good. It's a huge portion... maybe enough for 8 people as an appetizer. The bread was also super fresh. My husband has been bringing it up in casual conversation constantly since we ate it. And then, as if that weren't enough for an entire meal, we also ordered two entrees. I can't remember what it was called (long German word) but it was so delicious. I could barely eat any of it because I was already super full, but I took it with me and ate it for two additional meals. The prices were a little on the high side, but everything was so delicious and the portions were enormous. Next time, I would just get fondue and a salad instead of having an entree, too. Yum. I am hungry just thinking about it. As a bonus, they had a ton of New Glarus beer on tap for a pretty reasonable price per glass. Yum! The perfect meal after a day at the local (Minhas and New Glarus) breweries! Starting off with the fondue is a great decision. It is full of flavor from the strong swiss cheese they use. It is brought to the table bubbling in a pot, and placed over a flame for you to enjoy with plentiful cubes of bread. If you are looking for something simple and satisfying, I highly recommend the pork schnitzel sandwich. It's got everything you'd want in comfort food: flavorful meat glazed with butter, garlic, and onions on a toasty bun. Everything at Glarner Stube is fresh and you can tell the sausage is made locally. Expect a wait if you go during peak hours. The dining room is small, but it feels right that way. If it were much bigger, it would lose the old world charm. But grab a local brew at the bar while you wait and enjoy the cozy atmosphere! read more

Nice place, though a bit quiet for a Wednesday lunch. Had cheese curds and cured meat plate which went well with the local beer. The curds were pretty good the meat a bit dry and bland. Notwithstanding the fact that the restaurant is located in New Glarus, the home of "Spotted Cow", but this place cooks up some serious Swiss dishes: sauerbraten, pastetli, kalberwurst (veal sausage - savory!).
