**July 2025: Late Morning Visit** Spotted Cow! The city of New Glarus is basically a Spotted Cow destination! Wherever you go most restaurants will serve this beer, which is very malty. This beer is only available in Wisconsin but if you want the seasonal stuff visiting the New Glarus Gift shop will give you the most options Tuesday-Saturday: 10am-5pm I think the tasting option is $8 for 3 pours. It's a good way to try out all the different options before deciding on which bottles (or cans) you want to buy. The Stone Soup (Seasonal) was my favorite, but you can't go wrong with the original Spotted Cow. I think the majority of the seasonal beers were in bottles. I think they come in packs of either 4 or 6. The prices here are pretty comparable to if you buy them from a Wisconsin Target, but the big box stores have less variety. Since I was doing a big cross country roadtrip my weight allowance could not' accommodate everything I wanted *cries* and they don't ship their booze *cries* Next time I come back I'll make sure to make bring an empty suitcase! If you're visiting New Glarus your trip won't be complete without a visit to the factory (gift shop)!
An Unexpected Hidden Gem! What an unexpected surprise! I was just driving through the area with no intention of stopping at a brewery when I stumbled across this place. I've been to a lot of craft breweries, and I have to say this is now one of my all-time favorites. The concept is simple but awesome this isn't your typical bar. There's no indoor seating, but there's plenty of outdoor space on the other side of the parking lot. You come inside, pay $8 for a beer, and get to keep the glass. Or you can sample three beers for $8, keep the glass, and get a coin for a free beer in town. They also sell beer to go and other fun merch with their logo. The staff was super nice and friendly, and the vibe was relaxed and welcoming. I tried the Oktoberfest, the Pilsner, and the totally naked. All were fantastic! If you're anywhere near the area, definitely stop by you won't regret it.
Terrific place to sample their delicious beer. The main brewery on the hill isn't open right now but the backup setup is fine. After tasting the gift shop is open for all their beer styles and gifts! Also, after paying for a tasting of 3 beers in a take home glass you get a token for a beer at the local restaurants.

I love the efficiency of the line and how quickly I was able to get in and out with my beer. Maybe it's because I started at 11am on a Friday Why not 5 stars? No indoor seating. It was a blistering day in the high 80s and we scrunched into our seats to be in the shade. Not sure if it's normal or because they are doing renovations. Also wish Moon Man was on tap or another pale ale or IPA. Limited selection was a bummer. I get it that the star of the show is Spotted Cow but it would've been nice to have other options.
New Glarus Gyrator Doppelbock: Located in New Glarus, WI, New Glarus Brewing Company was founded in 1993 and is known for their best-selling beer, Spotted Cow. A Doppelbock is a strong (Doppel means double) dark, German-style lager. It is sometimes referred to as "liquid bread" due to its malty sweetness, full body, and its traditional association with the Lenten season. Brewmaster Dan Carey put over ten years of barley research into choosing the Czech barley that goes into New Glarus' Gyrator Doppelbock. While not as long as ten years, the brew does have a long journey as it's lagered ten weeks in the cellar before resting in the bottle for an additional 6 months for a more mature flavor. Since I'm not the biggest beer drinker, I apologize for my description and undefined palate. For me, it was a heavy and creamy brew with a hoppy/lightly fruity flavor. It poured a clear dark amber/brown color. If you enjoy a good craft beer, then I think you'll like this. I found it drinkable for a beer, but it's not one I would purchase myself. My favorite part was the extra strong buzz as it's a higher alcohol content (nothing official on New Glarus' website, which is weird but unofficial sources place it between 6.9-8 % alc/vol.). Finaliy made the pilgrimage to New Glarus with the goal of drinking Spotted Cow from the tap! Goal achieved, two times over! Recently in town visiting a friend in nearby Madison, and seeing New Glarus was a 30 minute drive, we made our way over on a Friday afternoon. As most breweries/distilleries, New Glarus is set quite a bit off the road and feels like a little compound. Several parking lots with one main by the main building, and several overflow lots. I did appreciate the marked shortcuts from the overflow lots as I'd imagine it's easily to get turned around in all those woods! To get to the good stuff you have to first purchase your pint or sampler. I knew I was after a couple of Spotted Cows, so I went straight for the pint and added a refill. Total cost was $14 and it included a glass! Additionally, you receive a coin that allows you to redeem for a free beer at any of the local restaurants in New Glarus. Sadly we did not eat in the area, but I do have a cool coin now! The staff was super friendly from the cashier to the actual bartenders slinging the goods. The gift shop was full of great items from hats to shirts to signs, koozies, dog accessories and countless other great items. I personally walked away with a great hat and t-shirt. They also have an onsite beer store that allows you to take a 6-pack or case of your favorite New Glarus brew home. After you get your beers and browse the shop, you and your way out to the outdoor seating tables and seatings areas that are scattered amongst the stone walls and buildings, and rock areas on the lower levels. There is plenty of seating and great views depending on where you sit. It feels very much like an old Scandinavian church village with a mix of new and old. Beautiful grounds, great beer, solid merch and a cool experience! Overall, very happy that I got to experience New Glarus! Love me some Spotted Cow and now I definitely know it tastes better directly from the tap!
Beer is always great. Only my second time here but not my second time drinking new glarus- haha! Come here is you want to have a chill time drinking beer with friends and making new friends. Staff are great and the vibe is chill. You'll like it here. Make sure you go into town and check out a local bar to use the coin you get at the brewery
It was decent. The "self tour" of the riverside brewery takes about 3 minutes. Will be better when the Hilltop brewery reopens. The taproom/gift shop is decent. You can mix and match a six pack. Eight dollars for a tasting and you get to keep the glass. Stickers, swag, shirts. Cute little town.
Such a fun day trip from the Chicago area! Everyone raves about New Glarus beer, the only problem is you can only buy it in Wisconsin! If you're a beer lover, or just looking for a weekend activity, I'd say this is worth the drive! I happened to be in Madison for the weekend, and New Glarus is only about 45 minutes away. New Glarus is a quaint town with some beautiful views on the way. The brewery has a self-guided tour, beer room, tap area, and gift shop. Keep in mind the beer sold by the case is more expensive here than any local gas station or grocery store, but they have all flavors available and they are fresh. We decided to do the $8 tasting, which includes 3 tastings in a souvenir cup. They have different options on tap every day. I was happy to see the cherry beer, but wish they had a couple more fruit options. It was may favorite for sure! The gift shop had lots of fun items, and I ended up taking home a cute spotted cow T-shirt. Our tasting also included a token to get a free beer in town. Highly recommend checking out the little downtown area. We ended up getting full raspberry beers at the Dirty Dog Taphaus. Such a fun day!!
Visiting here is almost a pilgrimage! They may not make the best IPAs I've ever tasted (my preference), but they do brew a lot of really excellent beers. The grounds are picturesque and sprawling, making for an outstanding experience.
While visiting a friend in town, I decided to check out this brewery. Having tried Spotted Cow before, I was excited to explore more of their beers! The original brewery is currently under expansion/renovation, but just a quick two-minute drive away, there's a tasting room and gift shop. Be aware that the parking lot is quite small, and the tasting room itself is cozy, so it can fill up quickly. For $8, you get three small tastings and even get to keep the glass--a nice little souvenir! They offer some refreshing light beers, but I gravitated toward the fruitier options. My favorite was the Belgian Red, made with Door County cherries--because really, who doesn't love cherries?! On the other hand, the Imperial Radler didn't quite hit the mark for me. It was supposed to have passionfruit and guava flavors, but I didn't pick up on either. I was hoping for something like the passionfruit beer I had in Brazil, but it fell a bit short. The gift shop sells a 4-pack of Belgian Red for $12.5*, which is interesting considering Trader Joe's sells it for $12. You'd think it would be cheaper right at the source! Overall, it was a fun little stop, and I'm glad I got to experience more of their brews. Definitely worth a visit if you're in the area!
Been waiting for so long to come here and it lived up to the type. Amazing venue. Beautiful grounds. Only 8 beers on tap at a time but plenty of non-hoppy options for those of us who don't like pale ales or IPAs. The beers rotate seasonally and March the season really well. Especially liked the Belgian red even with a cherry flavor. Tons of seating in the shade and in the trees if the patio is hot or full
Stopped in at New Glarus Brewing Company in Wisconsin for the brewery tour and tasting, known for their famous Spotted Cow beer. The self-guided tour was interesting and informative, though it would've been even better with a guide. The tour began with a movie from the founders, which was definitely worth watching as it provided a lot of insight into their story. The founders, Dan and Deborah Carey, seem like great people who treat their employees and community exceptionally well. The brewery also offers some fantastic outdoor spaces to enjoy your beer while taking in the beautiful surroundings. We sampled a variety of their beers--some we loved, and some we didn't--but we definitely enjoyed their Spotted Cow. The beer selection is diverse, ensuring there's something for everyone. Overall, New Glarus Brewing Company is definitely worth a visit, and while you're in the area, be sure to explore downtown New Glarus as well.

New Glarus is a must visit when in Wisconsin. At the very least to buy beer that isn't available in any other state! I've been before but this time around it was a little different. The brewery is under construction until next year so it's a little bit restricted in what there is compared to when I was last here in 2019, however, it's still worth a visit. They do have a large gift shop/beer depot. I always buy a lot of beer to mule back to KC. On this visit they had a limited beer release so it was busy. The individuals working in the depot were a bit rude to be honest. I don't know if they were just over it because there were a lot of people, but they weren't friendly nor very helpful. If it had been my first visit, it definitely would've been a turn off. The individuals working in the gift shop were nice. I bought a few Christmas gifts from there. After I bought all the merch I wanted, I headed across the street where they had a makeshift tasting room. They had lots of tables to sit at outside. In the tasting room you have the open of a pint or 3 tasters. You get to keep the glass either way you go which is pretty cool. I went with the taster option. They give you a glass and a bracelet that has 3 taster tabs that they remove as you get each one. The individuals working that station were nice and friendly. I love their sours and had to get pours of the strawberry rhubarb which is one of my favorites. They also have a self guided tour. It's on the smallish side but still cool to see even with all the construction. The bathroom situation was a bit iffy. Definitely try to use the gift shop bathrooms because otherwise it's porta-potties or there are restrooms in the tour area. Those are pretty run down and the stalls don't lock. My apologies to the poor lady I walked in on mid piss with her pants around her ankles. Overall, it's definitely worth checking out especially if you've never been. I can't wait until they finish construction and I'm able to return to see what it looks like. read more

I've had a New Glarus Brewing visit on my list for a while now and was so excited to finally go! The brewery itself was a lot smaller than I expected. It definitely makes you appreciate their level of distribution more but also makes a visit shorter in length. In one building, they had a tasting room. Inside, you could pay $8 for a pint of one beer or sample of three beers. Depending on the size you chose, you got to keep your cup. They also gave us a token for a free beer anywhere in town. There were picnic tables in the parking lot to enjoy drinks at casually. In the adjacent building, one could do a self guided tour of brewing equipment, canning equipment, and watch a background video from the owners. Across the street, they have a gift shop as well as their beer depot. They had merchandise available from glassware, apparel, pet items, coasters/stickers, and more. They had a lot of sizes available in store. The beer depot is a room where you can grab your drinks in 6 or 24 pack sizes. They have some beers specific to the brewery only but also had your wisconsin classics found in stores. Overall, I'm so happy I finally got to experience New Glarus Brewing. If traveling from a far, I would pair a visit here with other local plans. Elite Tip: They are currently building an expansion of Hilltop Brewing. read more
The beer garden is under construction or something so there is just the self guided tour and the tasting room. So hope to go back at photos looked like a beautiful outdoor space. But we did have a tasting and found some new things we really liked. Love that the cup also comes with the tasting so you get a souvenir too. read more

My husband and I first visited New Glarus Brewing Co. more than a decade ago, when we were still just dating. Since then, we've visited several more times, including one winter visit when we stayed overnight in the town of New Glarus (see my previous review). My husband and beer-loving friends stopped by during his bachelor party, and we toasted with New Glarus' Belgian Red at our wedding. And most recently, we visited again, with our two kiddos in tow. New Glarus has a special place in our hearts and travels. It has consistently remained a quality, delicious, family-owned product, and we look forward to making visits part of our Wisconsin travels into the future. On our most recent trip, we stopped for a quick bite and drink in New Glarus' beautiful outdoor picnic area on our way to the Northwoods of Wisconsin. I opted for a Raspberry Tart, a close cousin to my favorite, the cherry-filled Belgian Red. And my husband got a tasting that included a new favorite, the Edel-Pils German Pilsner. Having an outdoor area where our kids could stretch out a bit after being in the car for so long was much appreciated. We also noticed new trails and picnic tables near the trees that looked inviting. New Glarus seems family friendly, though heed the words on their website: "Anyone, regardless of age, who cries, spits, screams, fights or climbs on the machinery will politely be excused from our brewery tour." The kids got cow stuffed animals from the gift shop -- my son named his "Sausage" for some funny reason only known to him -- and my husband and I stocked up on some beer cases from the beer depot for the rest of vacation and beyond (you can only get this world-class beer in Wisconsin). One quick recommendation to the brewery: Please put changing tables in your bathroom. Even still, New Glarus will remain a favorite for years to come. We can't wait to go back! read more

I've been a fan of New Glarus beers for a long time, and since it's only available in Wisconsin, it's always a treat to get some when visiting. I hadn't made it to the brewery before though, so mostly had the popular, readily available varieties like Spotted Cow, Moon Man, etc. and love those. It was fun to visit and pick up an assortment of less common varieties from the shop. Black Currant 22 and Wisconsin Red Belgian (1 pound of cherries per bottle). were both great with cheese. Yes, they are fruity, but not overly sweet. I wouldn't drink one with a brat, but with cheese, they were great. The Staghorn Oktoberfest WAS perfect with some excellent brats we had for dinner one night and the Scream IPA was perfect with dinner as well. The self-guided tour was nicely laid out and it was very interesting to learn the history of the business and the process they use to make their beer. The grounds are beautiful and would be a delightful spot for a brew and picnic. The store is nicely set up and we found the selections that interested us with no problem and while we didn't buy any of the "experimental" brews, they do have those pricier very small batch options here too. read more
After hearing so many great things about New Glarus, my family and I finally decided to pay it a visit. The self-guided tour was laid out so well; it was interesting and super informative. I also loved how they structured the tasting - instead of getting one whole flight, you get a single sampler beer glass. You come up to the fill station when you're ready to try your next drink. Although this forces you to try one beer at a time, it helps you make the most of your time at New Glarus. For instance, in between trips to the fill station, I would head out to the picnic area with my family where we enjoyed each others' company with the beer and snacks. We tried the following: Totally Naked, Spotted Cow, Two Women, Fat Squirrel, Moon Man, Raspberry Tart. We also bought the spicy beer cheese spread, multi-seed crackers, and soft sweet potato chips. Totally Naked was a smooth, water-like drink whereas the Spotted Cow had a carbonated touch and was a bite more bitter in taste. Two Women was more refreshing and carbonated. The Fat Squirrel, my personal favorite, was smooth and had a nutty, hazelnut undertone. My second favorite was Raspberry Tart, which was kombucha-like and reminded me a bit of raspberry juice. The only reason why I'm giving New Glarus 4 stars is because I thought there would've been food/meals served here - but the snacks were great (don't get me wrong!) read more

You better be ready to walk a little when you go here because the parking lot neer the castle is pretty small. It sits on a huge plot on top of a mountain. So of the place has been allowed to crumble but I think that adds to the allure. Beautiful views from the edge of the castle grounds. You can pretty much do a self guided tour of the entire place. There is a brewery history section and a tasting room/souvenir shop. I felt like the process of getting a beer was annoying. You have to buy tickets that you later give to beer pourers...they're not even beeristas. And it's too pricy. They have a large storage area where you can purchase package also. I'm glad I went but I'm not going back. read more

I used to love Spotted Cow and Totally Naked Beer when I used to drink. Imagine stopping here and not partaking. We did the self guided tour where you watch a short video and walk around and observe the brewing process from behind ropes and glass. The smell of hops boiling was really good. I purchased a Spotted Cow pickleball set, sign, magnet and sticker. The Brewery is beautiful and clean. The company is employee owned and has great benefits for employees. Definitely stop in before heading to Chicago. read more
As a Chicagoan I hear about spotter cow from all my friends but can never get my hands on it. So I finally decided to make the trek and see how it's made. I love brewery tours and have done them all over the country, this was the first free tour I've found. I would have liked to have a guide to tell me the ins and outs but can't beat free. The gift shop is where this place shines brightest, reasonably priced souvenirs, cold beer, and fresh cheese curds. They have a phenomenal buy a glass get 2 beers deal which you just can't beat. Beautiful surrounds with an abundance of outdoor seating. I will definitely be back again ! read more
My second time visiting New Glarus but my husband's first, I knew I had to take him to the New Glarus Brewery. It was a winter weather day so we didn't spend lots of time outdoors but I did make sure to show him the great view from the back of the brewery. It was pretty busy inside that day but the process for getting a beer was flawless. My husband got a pint and I got the tasting. Each was $8 and we got to keep the glass. Mine was a little glass of course but for $8, my husband's pint glass was a great keepsake! We sipped our beer and wandered around the gift shop looking at all the things we wanted to buy but reasonably settled on a few. Each time I went back for one of my tasting beers, the bartender was really helpful in assisting me on what beer I might like. Visiting the brewery was definitely the highlight of our day/night in New Glarus! We hope to make another visit one day! read more

This place is great! Drove a bit out of our way to stop in, but very glad we did. For $8.00, you get 3 tastings and a souvenir glass. They had 6 beers on tap, so we gave it 2 rounds. We all fell in love with the Spotted Cow, but everything we had, including the strawberry rhubarb beer, was good. Left with a couple of cases! read more
Wonderful people and employees. The self guided tour is laid out so well. The employees if available will answer questions as you walk through. The story of Dan and Deb is right out of a book of how to find and achieve your dream and passion. The whole manufacturing process is so nicely laid out and clean. The taste testing is inspiring as well as fun; as you get to keep the glass. The outside is laid out for a relaxing walking trip of European building and place to stop and have a beer or take a sandwich/ lunch with and enjoy the scenery. A must see of a fairytale romance that not only blossomed as a relationship but a prominent enterprise which gives back to the community. Worth the stop! read more

If you're in the area, this is a must-visit! Home to Spotted Cow, Fat Tire and others, the brewery is so very well done. It feels like you're entering an upscale private farm when you pull up to the buildings nestled back off the road. New Glarus Brewing has so much history to share with you as you walk through the self-guided tour. The building is very well done with plenty of windows and plenty of real people in action doing their thing for you to see. I did not get a tour with a guide, but I'm guessing it might be possible if you call ahead or perhaps they have them regularly scheduled but not when I was there. The tasting area was excellent, as was the retail area. One thing I really liked was that there were so many smaller offerings not regularly seen at a liquor store or grocery store. As I recall, they also had the cafe but it was closed when I was there. read more

Brewery with a WORTHY patio! Took us two and a half hours from Chicago to get here. New Glarus is a smaller Wisconsin town that requires driving on back roads to get to. The land that this brewery is located on is iconic. New Glarus Brewing is one of the more picturesque breweries I've visited. The parking lot is a little chaotic. Keep in mind you have not only tons of locals that visit daily, but also travelers. The brewery is located on a hill. The main parking lot is located next to the entrance. The over flow parking lot is located parallel to that, and then I was told there was another parking lot at the bottom of the hill. We went on a Saturday at 2:00pm and snagged a parking spot in the main lot, but it was sheer luck. Walk up a set of stone stairs all the way to the top, to get to the tasting room. Take a Ralph. There is a staff member located at a register to give you your wristband for three tastings ($8), or the other option was to order a pint. Then, the bar was in the next room. The place filled up quick! On tap was Two Women, Moon Man, Spotted Cow, Cabin Fever, Belgian Red, and Totally Naked. Now... about the beer. It's a Wisconsin staple, and can ONLY be sold in Wisconsin. So, yes, that might be another reason why people travel to visit this gem of a brewery! Spotted Cow is most popular. Personally, my favorite is Fat Squirrel, which is out of season, and will continue to be out of season for quite some time (SAD FACE). Sharing the room with the Tasting Area, is a smaller gift shop that has apparel and nick knacks. If you exit the building where you came from and go straight, there is a bigger gift shop. Walk down the set of stone stairs, and the beer store is on the bottom level. I like this because you can mix and match bottles of four packs or six packs for purchase!! The patio.... my favorite part of this brewery, by far! It's dog friendly, which we did end up bringing our pooch, and saw other dogs, as well! There were even water bowls for dogs set out. The patio had picnic style seating and plenty of it! The view is great! There were even mini trails that we took our dog on a walk on with our tasting beers. So relaxing! This brewery is a must for the view, beer, patio, gift shop, beer store, and self guided tour. We spent an hour and a half here! It's a great day trip from Chicago!!! read more

For moi, a longtime dedicated fan of New Glarus's year-round and seasonal beers, this place is the center of the hop universe. NGB's new headquarters complex is, in one word, spectacular. The brewery tour is self-guided, which is nice because you can go through at your own pace. Interpretive signs are posted throughout and workers are delighted to explain the brewing process and answer questions. In the tasting room, $8.00 entitles you to sample three beers and keep the souvenir glass. The Beer Depot has it all - pallets piled high with everything they brew, and the staff will gladly help you carry your purchase to your car. The entire facility is sparkling clean and free of clutter. An attractive outdoor Bavarian (Swiss?) beer garden hosts special events, weather permitting. But overall, the visitor experience leaves something to be desired. The sprawling multilevel layout may be confusing to first-time visitors. Oversize vehicles are not permitted to access the visitor parking lot; groups arriving by bus are expected to climb a treacherous flight of stone steps sans railings, then hike up a steep trail through the woods. NGB's website even states, "Buses are encouraged to visit one of the other fine Wisconsin Breweries with bus friendly parking." Holy (spotted) cow! I emailed NGB, suggesting they invest in a tram to shuttle visitors to the main entrance. No response. Folks, you gotta fix this! Though the facility is big and attractive, the smallish tasting room has no seating and there is neither a brewpub nor a taproom onsite (in other words, no food or free beer samples). But the product is stupendous, particularly their Thumbprint Series. I give the product 5 stars and the visitor experience 3 stars. read more

Great views, food service and great beers. Definitely visit this place in summer /spring. We tried Dancing man, Naked man and many others that I forgot. They also give a token with most purchases with which you can get a new Glarus beer anywhere in Wisconsin, which I think is pretty cool. The beer itself was good, and there was great atmosphere. read more
