Well seasoned meat, good kraut, and toasty bread... Large portion so I handed half over to the guy next to me, and he bought me another brewski...Bonus! Great people, great beers, quality food... If you like packing yourself to the gills with cheese and beer, this is the place for you. My spouse and I came here as they accept tokens from New Glarus Brewery... And also because I read that they have fondue. The fondue is currently $20, but you get an ACTUAL BUCKET of delicious cheese and a village of yummy, crusty bread chunks. The staff is also crafty and knows how to package leftover fondue. We also split a bratwurst sandwich with sauerkraut and German potato salad, which was fantastic. The sausage had great flavor, and the casing actually snapped. All of the staff was great. Perfectly attentive, and since we were the only folks at the bar for awhile, we had a nice chat with the staff. I kinda hope I get to come back here some day! read more

Gave this New Glarus staple a try for cheese fondue. We were warned to go early as they don't take reservations on weekends and we were glad we listened. We arrived around 4:30 pm and by 5:00 pm the dining room was full. Looking around at other tables all the food looked good. We found the cheese fondue had a bit of a bitter taste. Not certain if that was just because of the cheese they use or the wine. The fondue came with a bowl of French bread cubes and the waitress brought us more bread when we ran out. If you're in the area give this restaurant a try but get there early. read more

We walked the streets of New Glarus and thanks to the amazing reviews on Yelp, we choose to open the door and step inside Glarner Stube. Immediately as you open the door, the smell of German food wafts toward you and you join the crowd that is inside. We wiggled to the hostess stand, which is past the bar, and put our name on the list, a 45 minute wait. The interior is very small, so we wiggled back to the bar and stood in a single file line behind the patrons at the bar. Luckily, some seats at the bar opened up, and within 10 minutes, we were seated at the bar and we cancelled our dining room spot. We enjoyed delicious food and even more delicious beer from New Glarus. The bartenders were friendly and entertained us with stories until our food arrived. The food was outstanding! Charming Swiss restaurant in Green County selected by Kristin and Chef Regi of Emmi Roth. Dining room that seats 40, was pretty busy on a Weds night with 90% tables filled. Decor was full-on Alpine. Smartly ordered family style to try as many different dishes as possible for 6 visiting Chef Educators from around the nation. Cozy, humming atmosphere, friendly but brisk service. Cheese curds piping hot and salty. Weiner-Schnitzel, Veal and mushrooms, Roesti Potatoes, BBQ Brisket and Sausages were all winners as was Red Cabbage and desserts. We stopped at this delightful restaurant on our way through New Glarus. What a n amazing experience! The entire town is like visiting a Swiss village, and inside the restaurant is like stepping back in time. The decor is charming! Our waitress was very sweet and took time to explain the various Swiss menu options. I have been here before. The Swiss fondue was awesome in past visits. This time the fondue was too runny, and not cheesy enough. For the price of $22 I will not order the Swiss fondue again. This is a historic spot in New Glarus. Was disappointed how lame this city was but that's another story. Small place with an approximately 15 person bar and then a small dining room. All of the staff were really nice. The menu included many German specialities. I got the schnitzel sandwich which was pretty good! The tiramisu dessert was great. I tried to love this place - we took a day trip up to Epic & Cave of Mounds before back 2 school - took long way home through New Glarus to see f we could find something to eat in the funky little town - reviews on yelp looked good - my 13 YO daughter was off put by the size and thought it looked dead but when I stepped inside it was packed and an hour wait so we walked over to the flower shop which closed right away and went back to wait - grabbed a bar spot to have a drink and wait out our hour - I was a little shocked by the funk going on behind the bar - hands in pants - then into the olive garnish ‍ nooo it was pretty gross - lots of stinky glasses - we got cheese curds and they were battered with a breading that was like a sandwich it was so thick - I'm not a beer drinker so sadly the beer batter wasn't my fav - should have just gotten the fondue - we got a table after 45 mins - ordered what I'd hope to be quick sandwiches - after ordering our waitress never came back to refill drinks / see if we needed anything / if our food was ok / wouldn't make eye contact when she went by so I hand to turn around twice and stop her - I needed to add broccoli onto my daughters meal and ask for some bread to hold her over (mind you it's been over and hour and half since we started waiting and the kid was about to pass out) our food was average and we just wanted to leave bc the flies were everywhere - had to ask for Togo containers - ask again for the check - my husband finally got up and went and asked for it after she stood at the bar talking for 15 mins - I'd have had another glass of wine and wants 2 desserts to go but couldn't get anyone to come to take care of us. I think the owner or something started stepping in bc she was falling apart? I've almost never tipped 15% and actually left a not to tell the waitress she was pretty awful. Not a great effort. Went here to use our tokens from the brewery. Unfortunately the same beers were on tap here as were at the brewery. Makes sense that the brewery wants to get people into town to patronize the businesses, but I would have liked to sample some different beers than they had at the brewery. We opted for dessert since we had already had a big lunch. Menu was reminiscent of our recent trip to Germany and everything coming out of the kitchen looked great! I wished I wasn't so full so I could have sampled some schnitzel. The cheese curds are HUGE. Dessert was ok. Looked like they preordered all of them from Cheesecake Factory. Nothing special. Really unique and authentic Swiss cuisine in a town where you can't get enough. Definitely recommend coming here after a stop at the brewery so you can redeem your beer coin for a free drink. We all got the pork schnitzel sandwich and it was huge. On the side we got the hash browns which Swiss cheese; a really interesting twist of tastes that play out well. We also ate red cabbage and German baked beans. I saw a lot of surround tables having the cheese curds so hands up, I wish we got them too. They looked delicious. read more

We went on a Saturday night and the special was prime rib. It was amazing. We had that plus the Roesti potatoes. Everything including the food and service was excellent. Stop by this place after going to the New Glarus Brewery. Our waitress was so nice her name Cheryl I believe. She explained everything. We ordered the cheese fondue and she gave us time to work on that before putting in our food order which was prefect. We then had the skirt steak sandwich, a wedge salad, Ruben sandwich and the Roesti. To drink we had the coins from the brewery so we got another small sample of New Glarus beer. Food was just okay. We have been here before. The roasti was a little bitter and one of the diners came out cold, some sort of sausage and mushroom. The waitress dropped off our bill before we were done eating and didn't offer us a dessert. She took the bill before asking if we needed anything else or even a leftover box. Glarner Stube is located a stone's throw from New Glarus and smack dab in the center of the main drag. I went with the Swiss meatballs, smothered in a tasty mushroom tomato gravy. The accompanying roesti potatoes are the size of a frisbee, best described as a cheesy hash brown concoction. The wife picked the fondue, a not insignificant bowl of cheesy goodness. I had originally heard of New Glarus, "The Switzerland of America," from an article in the New York Times Travel section. Having lived 6 months in Switzerland, I had to see this village of a town that lies 6 hours north of Indy for myself. I'm always hesitant when it comes to American towns/celebrations that are supposed to be representative of other countries - they either take the authentic approach that leaves me drooling for more or the commercial, cheesey, lets make a dollar and Brittany puke route. I'm happy to report that New Glarus is the real deal and yet again, the NYT Travel crew led me in the right direction. Glarner Stube is no exception to the authenticity of New Glarus. Housed in a chalet-like building filled with a wooden interior reminiscent of a grotto I visited in the countryside of Switzerland's Italian canton of Ticino. The décor on the walls was subtle but screamed rural, traditional Switzerland with cow bells and paintings of the Alps. The small, intimate setting rounded the feel of the restaurant out. The menu: Rosti! (roe-sh-ti) The traditional potato cheese (typically Gruyere-like) hashbrown-esque dish found on menus across Switzerland. Delicious and horrible for your help, but I have to say this version was dead on. I requested some ketchup, which I'm not sure is acceptable in Switzerland? Along with my rosti I opted for the Swiss vegetarian soup - the only thing Swiss about it is the clump of Gruyere in the bottom but who cares, it was delicious. Another classic to be found on the menu is fondue. Step aside Melting Pot. After filling your stomach with hearty Swiss eats, be sure to head down the street to the Swiss shop operated by a Swiss immigrant and the bakery and butcher! read more

You know why this place has the rave reviews? Because everyone that comes here has already stopped by New Glarus brewery first and are nice and toasty by the time they get here. We did the same thing, but I was designated driver. We were sat in the back left corner right next to the doorway to the kitchen. It was crazy busy when we were there around 2 pm on a Saturday. The first thing I noticed was the "fresh" glass full of ice sat before me had lip and food smudges on it. Sick dude. I didn't use it. Sometimes these things happen, so I didn't say anything. We were served dinner rolls and butter. The little plates were passed around, and I got the plate that had dried on food stuck to it. Fantastic. My portabella mushroom sandwich came with a side of beer battered fries. This looked ok, and tasted good. My dining companions had the BLT sandwich, and a brat with sauerkraut. They said they were good. The waiter we had was nice, but not in the mood to chat. I got the feeling she thought we were all drunken idiots. The women's bathroom is the size of a broom closet, and it has a big picture of George Costanza from Seinfield posing his underwear. This isn't a place you go if you are looking for healthy food because everything is fried in some way. However it works well because all patrons are happily drunk. Next time I'm in New Glarus, I'm going to be trying the Sportsman Grill one door over. I really, really wanted to like this place, but besides the decor, everything seemed to be working against its favor. First, the food was mediocre at best..and I think that is putting things nicely. I had the perch fillet sandwich with the roesti while my friend had the pork schnitzel sandwich with a side of soup. The fish fillets were bland and required an unhealthy amount of salt/pepper/tartar sauce before it started to taste more like fish and less like bread. The roesti was also bland, and for something that was advertised as "Swiss fried potatoes", didn't seem to be very authentic...let alone Swiss. Cheese + hashbrowns? Sounds like something served at Denny's. My friend's pork tenderloin looked so dry and overcooked that I felt even worse that her free cherry stout (with a coupon from NGBC) didn't taste better so that she could wash her sandwich down with it. It didn't seem like her tenderloin was the only one suffering from tough-chewy-meat-itis though, because the girl at the table next to us was also served with a similarly sad looking piece of meat. I also stepped out of the restaurant smelling like I had been bathing in saturated oils all morning. Blech. Better ventilation please. read more

Do you have pants with an adjustable waistband? If you do, wear them here. The place is small and quaint and be prepared for a decent sized wait on a weekend night. Some must-haves if you are visiting: 1) Roesti-Hasbrowns with swiss cheese. Awesome 2) Fondue-How can you go wrong with cheese and bread 3) If you are there on Friday, the fish fry is some of the best I've had. You really can't go wrong with ordering anything on the menu. The only thing I would not get is the dessert. None are made in house and noteworthy. read more

Second time visiting the Glarner Stube today and it was a great experience again! We started off with two New Glarus draft beers --- Scream IIPA and Coffee Stout. For lunch we ordered the pork schnitzel sandwiches. My fiancé got fries as a side and I got roesti (delicious fried potatoes with cheese). The meal quite honestly made me want to drool. Stopped in for lunch on a holiday weekend in May 2018. Located in downtown New Glarus this place is an American-Germen food restaurant. A bit more touristy than I like, but the food was pretty good. Had the Rueben Sandwich and an order of Wisconsin Cheese Curds. The Wisconsin Cheese Curds were on the large size and nice and hot. Good tasting Rueben sandwich. The front of the restaurant is a traditional bar (where you can get good at the bar) and the rear of the restaurant is traditional restaurant seating. Kid friendly and good for groups probably 8 persons or less. The place was pretty busy with a community music fest going on outdoors, but we got seated promptly and service was decent. read more

We weren't sure what kind of food to expect in this little village, so we were pleasantly surprised by what we ordered at Glarner Stube. Great Swiss/German food in a very cute, quaint place. We started off by ordering the cheese platter, which was the one dish we were slightly disappointed with. First of all, the cheese didn't come out until after our entrees were served and even then the waitress didn't describe or even IDENTIFY the cheeses on the platter. The salads that came with 2 of our meals was very good, though. Then the delicious entrees came out: my brother ordered the meatballs, which were good, especially with the gravy. We ordered the schublig, which we was incredibly flavorful. Nicely ground, fresh, meat and the accompanying mustard went very well with it. We ordered 2 rostis with those entrees based on the recommendation from a worker at the New Glarus Brewery, and though it was good, we weren't mind-numbingly blown away by it, like we were led to believe. We also ordered the reuben, which I was kind of reluctant to order since I was craving a wiener schnitzel but was scared off by the price. But the reuben was one of the best reubens I've ever had--the meat was thick cut, which I like a lot, and there was just enough swiss, dressing, and saurkraut to balance each other out. And the rye bread was buttery and crisp. Delicious. And the kid's hot dog meal was pretty good for its price. If you're in New Glarus you've got to try Glarner Stube. It's a cozy and wonderful, local bar/restaurant with very tasty food. It was so good I didn't even mind that the patrons at the bar were smoking and going crazy from the Brewers game on TV.
