Apparently, their gluten-free option is simply to serve the sushi without soy sauce -- with no salty substitute whatsoever. We asked if the kitchen could provide salt, miso, or anything else gluten-free to add some flavor. We were told they had none. So the solution was basically: eat the sushi completely plain. For a sushi restaurant, not having gluten-free soy sauce is already surprising. Having absolutely no alternative -- not even something as basic as salt -- made the experience even worse. 2. Zero problem-solving What was more frustrating was that no one seemed interested in helping us find a solution. After we repeatedly asked about alternatives, the first server finally said they would look for some salt, but never came back with it. When a second server brought our food, we asked again and were simply told that the kitchen had no salt and no miso. No alternative was suggested. No other option was offered. Just "we don't have it." I completely understand that restaurants cannot accommodate every dietary restriction. But there is a big difference between not having a specific ingredient and making no effort to help a guest find a reasonable alternative. If you are gluten-free, I would not recommend this location.

Would come back here again. I ordered an eight piece roll with self chosen four pieces of sushi. I had an appetizer of Spicy Garlic Edamame with a Strawberry Lemonade. The edamame was spicy, but not too strong in the garlic taste to overpower the spice. It was an addicting taste and I highly recommend getting that on the menu. The roll and suhsi came out sooner than I expected, since a chef makes them RIGHT in front of you (depending on whete you sit). Aside from the food, the servers and chefs here were very perceptive and cared about every detail. They have FREE refills and also will help with any dietary needs, etc. Additionally, the music in the back isn't mindless noise, but also a nice set of music that I relaxed to. With a wide sushi bar and a few tables that you can sit in. While also making reservations if having a big amount of company coming. This place in my humble opinion is VERY underrated and was such a great experience to try out new things. Considering the food here is high quality and come out pretty quick! This place is Amazing. My girlfriend found out about this place on Yelp, and decided to take me there. I'm Japanese and haven't eaten such good sushi anywhere else! It is delicious, it is fresh, and it is clean. The sushi chefs are outstanding. They are very friendly and funny. They have lunch special including Soup, Rice, Gyoza, Salad, Sushi, and Your choice of meat for $7.75. WHAT? THAT IS VERY CHEAP. AND it's also VERY delicious. They have normal sushi rolls for $2 (4 rolls). or as my favorite special roll is "HUNGRY ROLL" (deep fried tempura with spicy tuna inside with special go-go sauce) which is $8 (8 pieces). You must get their Tempura Rolls ($2). It is outstanding. They, sometimes, have TODAY'S SPECIAL ... so look out for those. Because those are the Fresh-est ... oysters or blue fin tuna (they just got it that day). They have other Japanese Food besides Sushi. They have chicken or beef or other meat teriyaki entrees, udon, mori soba, etc... I recommend gogo sushi to everyone! read more

I've eaten here quite often as I own a business close by. I've always loved it as my quick B grade sushi spot...today I was shocked at the quality of everything. From my $3 iced "green tea" that was literally water (had my husband blind taste test) to the salmon that was almost a see through pale peach color to the albacore that I legit spit out. I asked to give my feedback to the manager and he didn't care about anything I had to say. I was genuinely nice and hoping to offer constructive criticism but when your complaints are not acknowledged that's when I end up here. Our server was great and he apologized saying he's sorry he can't do anything. It's all good because I won't be getting food poisoning here and I'll be sure to let the neighborhood know what poor quality ish they're serving from here on out. I'm giving 2 stars because I'm a business owner myself and know how hurtful Yelp can be....the experienced I had was 0 star worthy. read more

This is probably my favorite sushi restaurant in pasadena area. Randomly came here to get sushi one day, and now I can't stop coming every time my wife needs some sushi. One of their absolute must try is the lobster roll and hawaiian roll. I love lobster roll. Or maybe obsessed. Every time i went to any sushi restaurant, if they have lobster roll on their menu, i would try it. And believe me, GOGO SUSHI MAKES THE BEST LOBSTER ROLL, period. I also like their yummy crispy. Super good. I don't know what secret sauce they put there, but the flavor exploded, in a good way. Their staffs are also really really fast and proffesional, friendly, always checked on my table to make sure we have what we need. Food: The seared ahi tuna salad is one of my favorite dishes here, they also have a decent bento box lunch special (salmon is good for price), and several two-dollar sushi rolls. The selection of sushi rolls is a bit better than average, quality is decent. Drinks: Pretty much what you'd expect from a middle-of-the-road sushi establishment; Asahi, Kirin, etc. They do not have a full bar. Ambiance: Nothing special, once again pretty standard for a sushi restaurant. Not particularly bad, just a bit cold, bland, and basic. Service: Typical sushi paper and pencil, Asian waitresses. You could find a much better Sushi place for lunch than here. I just so happened to be in the area, and I was hungry. I only ordered the Sashimi Salad and Gyoza. Don't get the Gyoza unless you want to lose your teeth. The salad was too fishy, so obviously not fresh. Just by looking the menu, there's not much exciting selection to choose from. Also, their spicy tuna roll is so spicy I thought my tongue was going to fall off. Their sushi was definitely overpriced for the quality. :( Their service isn't that fast either. Low quality fish at a high price. My friend and I came here just a few days ago and both of us got stale, cold sushi. When we complained to the waiter, he gave us an annoyed glare and I could've sworn all he did was just throw it into the microwave. He slammed the dish down on our table, and walked away angrily. The new poke bowl they have at this place is amazing. It is a lot better than most poke bowl restaurants. The quality of the fish is absolutely amazing, and the sauces have a lot more sophisticated taste than other bowls. Also, the size of these bowls are a lot larger than most restaurants and the price is very affordable at less than $11. It is definitely something that everyone should try. read more

The waiters had poor attitudes and seem like they were going to burst of annoyance. I ordered quite a few things and they were unfresh and super bland. I love that you walk into the restaurant through the patio area along Hill Avenue. I walked by a number of tables before I got to the ordering counter. I was greeted by a friendly 'hello and how can I help you?' I explained that I needed some help with the menu as I had read what they offered online but had some questions. After listening to some suggestions, I came up with an order. I decided on a box of three hand rolls with sides. I also knew that I wanted to try the sushi balls that were on the menu. I knew that I wanted the yellowtail sashimi and the lobster ball. He double checked my order and told me that it would be a few minutes. As soon as I ordered the lobster ball he let the chef know so he could start on my order, as follows: Bacon Avocado ball Baked Lobster shrimp hand roll Yellowtail sashimi Salmon yuzu hand roll I sat down at one of the tables as others lined up to put in their orders. I could tell from the orders that there were some people that were regular customers as well as some new clients standing in line. It was nice to know that I was not the only one with questions about the items on the menu. There were staff members taking out some items and making sure tables were cleared and sanitized properly. It was a busy time of day, people picking up as well as people ordering. A number of the tables were filled with customers. The patio also had a number of tables with umbrellas. After about 10 minutes my order was ready and I was on my way. Once home I unpacked the items that had been carefully packed by the staff member. Everything looked really good. Some of the items still had the fresh aroma of the kitchen. I was happy to see that all the condiments including wasabi were packed with my order. There was even some salted edamame in a small container. My favorites were the bacon avocado ball and the Yellowtail Sashimi. The Lobster Ball was also a hit with me. It was all very good. While I walked. I noticed there was plenty of parking alongside the building as well as side streets in the area. With this location just off the 210 freeway. It is also close to Pasadena City College, about three blocks away. I will definitely be back and look forward to trying some of the other sushi, sashimi, ball & hand roll options.

We ordered, the food was good but the only reason I am leaving this review is what happened in the dining area. A young lady who works at the front register area comes out and appears to check the trash by pulling it out, proceeds to throw up in it (yes the trash in the dining area where family's are dining at the same time) and then right after I would assume she would go to the restroom to take a moment to refresh herself and gain her composure but no, she then goes to the the front of the restaurant where there is another trashcan by the front door, I'm thinking to myself ok, she's checking the trash can this time...but no!! She throws up in this one as well!!! All while a man who looks like a manager is talking to another employee who is working the register, they clearly see her throwing up in the dining area and just keep on with their conversation like nothing is happening. Even after alll of that, after she has now thrown up back to back in the dining area she still does not go to the restroom. She washes her hands in the employee kitchen area and sits down in the dining area right after. I was utterly grossed out from seeing all this while eating dinner, I hope the employee did not have a virus because she was handling the trays and so on that were passed to us before we ate. I will never return to this location again.

While many things have evolved over the years, one thing remains unchanged--the consistently excellent food and attentive service at Oba Sushi. It was great to see that the quality that made this place memorable in the first place is still going strong. For lunch, I ordered the Mango Tango Roll and the Healthy Roll, along with an unsweetened iced green tea. The Mango Tango Roll featured salmon, kani, mango, ume paste, sprouts, and oba leaves wrapped in cucumber and topped with a house-made mango sauce. Despite being a rice-free roll, it was surprisingly flavorful, refreshing, and satisfying. The Healthy Roll was equally enjoyable, combining avocado, cucumber, yamagobo, takuan, sprouts, mango, and brown rice wrapped in soy paper with sesame seeds. Both rolls were fresh, well-balanced, and packed with flavor. The unsweetened iced green tea was the perfect accompaniment to the meal. Refills were complimentary, and the hostess thoughtfully brought out a carafe of tea, making it easy to refill our glasses throughout lunch without having to wait.

This was also my first time trying food from Moon 48. Unfortunately, I ordered the Pad See Ew to go, and the taste was extremely disappointing. The noodles had a strong plastic taste, almost as if the food had absorbed the flavor of the black plastic takeout container. That was essentially all I could taste. I really wanted to like this place, but between the promotion not being honored and the food tasting like plastic, this was not a good first experience. Update: About 20 minutes after eating 1/4 of the Pad See Ew, I developed diarrhea. This happened shortly after eating the meal and it made an already disappointing experience even worse.

The Kaisen Don was loaded with premium sashimi, uni, ikura, sweet shrimp, and tamago, and the Premium Omakase was a fun way to try a variety of nigiri. One of the best reasons to come here is their 30% off special before 5 PM, which makes it a really good value for the quality you're getting. I was a little sad to see that the Kaisen Don went up by $5, but even with the price increase, I still think it's worth ordering, especially with the early discount. The restaurant is relatively big and has a relaxed atmosphere that works well for a casual lunch or date. Service has also been friendly and attentive whenever I've come, and we never felt rushed. Overall, great quality fish, beautiful presentation, good service, and an even better deal if you come before 5. Definitely somewhere I'd come back to!
