I love this place and come here frequently for dinner. They have a great happy hour, but even without it, the prices are very reasonable for the quality and portions. Their nigiri and rolls are noticeably larger than what you typically get at other sushi restaurants. I've also been to the Mikomi locations in Monrovia and West Covina, but something about the Alhambra location just stands out. The fish always tastes incredibly fresh and the overall quality feels more consistent here. My favorites are the Kaisen Don, Mentaiko Pasta, and Sushi + Sashimi Omakase. Also, a huge shoutout to the bartenders! I actually love sitting at the bar sometimes because they're incredibly skilled and creative with their drinks. Tell them what you like and they can come up with something for you, which makes it such a fun and interactive experience. The drinks are so amazing (honestly one of the reasons why I love this place). It's perfect to grab some good sushi, have a good drink, and walk around main street afterwards. My husband, cousin, and I ordered the Pass Around Family Style Rolls, which was a great deal. You order four rolls prepared family style, which is well worth the price. We ordered: shrimp crunch roll, spicy tuna tempura roll, angry tiger roll, and pink panther roll. All of the rolls were great, and my favorites were for sure the angry tiger and pink panther. Mikomi in Alhambra has become one of my go to spots when I'm craving sushi! We ordered the Kaisen Don and Premium Omakase, and both were beautifully presented with a great variety of fresh seafood. The Kaisen Don was loaded with premium sashimi, uni, ikura, sweet shrimp, and tamago, and the Premium Omakase was a fun way to try a variety of nigiri. One of the best reasons to come here is their 30% off special before 5 PM, which makes it a really good value for the quality you're getting. I was a little sad to see that the Kaisen Don went up by $5, but even with the price increase, I still think it's worth ordering, especially with the early discount. The restaurant is relatively big and has a relaxed atmosphere that works well for a casual lunch or date. Service has also been friendly and attentive whenever I've come, and we never felt rushed. In any case, we spent about thirty minutes perusing the aisles of Sprouts and chatting outside before our table was ready. As an appetizer, we ordered the Ika Geso, fried squid legs which had a crispy texture dipped in the fresh flavors of aioli and lemon juice. For the main course, we went with family style and ordered the following rolls: Refresh, Truffle Seared Salmon, Ultimate Yellowtail, and Black Spider. My minor complaint would be the irregularly shaped portions of the Black Spider with some fried crab sticking out being slightly awkward to eat. Came here on a Sunday afternoon around 2pm and there was an 8-15min wait, not terrible. You can check-in via yelp in advance to beat the line. they do have 1 private room that seats 12 situated near the front of the restaurant. Fairly quiet since it is walled off and away from the rest of the guest, however; it is right by the entrance with no doors to seal off the room. Service was just ok today. Nothing spectacular, definitely room for improvement, but nothing to warrant a negative review. Once our number was up, only then did someone greet us and lead us to our table. Our waitress promptly arrived to get our drinks and followed up with us timely to place our orders. It did take several turns of waiters to finally get my water refilled but I was able to just drink off my partners cup while I waited. The serving plates they provided at every table were white plastic dishes intended for it's durability in high traffic restaurants. I'm sure they sanitize the plates, but the film I found on our dishes left me quite disgusted. it's the same film you find caked onto wooden tables, which is the exact stickiness I felt from our table. this place is in dire need of a full restaurant DEEP CLEAN. I mean scrubbing down all the tables, chairs, and walls. Actually soaping and scrubbing all the dishes, everything. It's like trying to eat fancy in a diner vibe because of how awful and cheap all the dishes were. These plastic pieces just cling too well to grim. YES, GRIM! This place operates for high turnover. They offer fancy pants steak and hot stone pots where it's served with table side service with a little show but then you get disposable utensils to eat them with. Came around 8:30pm, still fairly busy. I ended up getting the bento box with teriyaki chicken, added blue crab rolls for $4, and my friend got the tonkotsu ramen. When I asked if the bento came with miso soup the waiter said no, but I could substitute the salad for miso soup instead, which I did. Surprised, since most bento boxes I've had include miso soup by default. The chicken was underwhelming lacked flavor, plus a lot of fatty, chewy bits and bone fragments. The crab rolls were basically a California roll with crab swapped in, no toppings, no sauce, nothing special. Ramen was decent, generous noodles, two pieces of pork, but pretty basic. Not sure if ownership or management changed since my last visit, but compared to my previous review, a lot feels different, makes me wonder if the food quality shifted too. This was plenty of food for 4 people and we were pretty stuffed by the end. I usually love this place. We have one near me in West Covina and it's delicious but this location the beef was so tough that my grandparents couldn't eat it and I had a hard time chewing it! I've been a regular customer here and typically come twice a week, so this experience was particularly disappointing. The server (talk big guy with glasses) was extremely rude and made me feel like I was being rushed out right after I finished my meal, even though I was still drinking my drink. He came over asking, "All done?" and immediately put the bill down on the table. It felt very obvious that he wanted me to leave, rather than simply checking in politely. I only had about 15 minutes meal and he rushed me out. This is not the first time happened with this guy. I understand that restaurants can get busy, but there's a much more respectful way to handle this, especially with a regular customer. I've always enjoyed coming here, but this experience made me feel very unwelcome. I hope management can address this with the staff. I would recommend that this server receive additional customer-service training, particularly on how to communicate with guests and how to appropriately handle the end of a meal. I tried the regular Sushi Omakase, it had a nice variety of fresh fish. I really liked the Scallop and Yellowtail. As far as sushi goes I give it a 8/10 as it was tasty, but not mind blowing. Usually parking isn't too much of an issue but as it's in a very busy shopping center you might have to park a bit further. The staff were very helpful and knowledgeable. They got us sat, order taken and order served in a very short period of time, which I appreciate! This seems consistent with the last couple times I ate there. The last time was at the bar with the same impression. The rolls were VERY good! I am not a "fancy" roll guy where they put all kinds of sauces and mixtures a proteins and this menu doesn't have a lot of that. They have some but I am pretty happy with the mix of choices of sushi rolls in that it was difficult to decide which four to order (that's how many I eat). The salad was nothing special and would be better if it was more fresh. Overall, I enjoyed the set and it was a good deal. The Japanese Miso Ramen ($16.99) was just ok. The broth didn't taste like "36 hour miso infused tonkotsu broth" and tasted pretty bland. The noodles didn't taste chewy or fresh. There was way too much bean sprouts and green onions honestly so ramen was definitely a pass unfortunately. The tuna rolls were pretty good. The tuna was fresh and the sushi tasted very yummy! I would most likely return and recommend for the sushi (only if they still have the promo!) but definitely would not recommend the ramen. read more
