As far as disc golf, the course is an afterthought and hard to follow. Several times it criss crosses ball golf holes. Maybe if I was playing with locals I would have liked it more. Lots of hills and a couple of scenic shots. Might be a better ball golf course rather than disc golf. read more

Course Quality: Remember you're paying $13 (or less, they have several discounts) for 9 holes. $13 for a $20 course = 5 Stars. Staff: I've always been greeted right when I walk in the door. The cart path is in pretty bad shape and there are a number of holes where the fairway is more sandy dirt than grass. The Goat is possibly the best short course I've EVER played and for sure is the best in SD! I understand that some people might dislike this course as it can be very challenging if conditions don't cooperate that day. But there are some all time great holes on this course. Place is terrible. Any course that would book you a tee time behind a group of six let alone even allow a group of six to book a tee time at 4:00 in the summer is a dog shit golf course. After waiting for 40 minutes to play 2 holes I went back in and asked if I could get my money back they were not able to because it wasn't "raining". If you are going to have the rainout rule than operate in accordance with a golf course that can uphold a rule like that. Don't book a group of six and screw the people behind you. Let me start by saying I was skeptical about playing a par 65 course. This track was not long, but incredibly challenging by way of the greens. I'd challenge any skilled golfer to come into this place and conquer these greens. The fairways are very much so spot play (think links) but very green. The best part about this course was that misses are costly, so you've got to dial in your low irons. Overall, this place has brilliant environment of golfittude, and is a fun place to play. read more

This course is challenging and the greens are in great shape, really smooth. It's great to sharpen your short game and costly if your long game is inaccurate. Make sure you get a cart unless you wanna hike up and down hills, and when I say hike, I'm talking about steep slopes, get the cart. The staff was very friendly which was a nice surprise. The more I golf the more I find out that staff can be hot of miss depending on whether they know you or not. Luckily not a problem here, told them I was new and they told me they'd like to see me stop by again, and offered lots of help. This course is unlike any I've played in the area, a tad bit unorthodox but again, really cool. Also I'm sure they may lose a star because the shoe course isn't rough and fairway, but I think it's still great because it makes you know your clubs and it's really economical if you care about that sort of thing. We had a tee time at 12:50 pm for 4 and when we arrived we were told we were late. We were told our tee time was at 12:00 pm. I had a receipt saying 12:50 pm. The gal at the counter made it seem she was doing a favor getting us on the course when we were actually were early. Not acceptable service. Let's be more professional. It is hip, it is casual, it is the furthest thing from pompous country club golf you could imagine. Thus, their scorecard reads "World Class * Working Class and The People's Park of Oceanside". There is an online video with a narrator going through each hole and providing suggestions. I highly recommend you do so before... ...entering "THE GOAT CHAMBER". There are many challenges at this course and it begins with the windy ocean breeze and is compounded by the hilly up and down layout, the tabletop undulating compact greens with collapsing front edges. This is primarily target golf and if you miss your spots you are likely to be in some trouble and more than likely serious trouble. We have played the course twice and on VISIT ONE I made the mistake of drinking a large iced coffee on the drive to the course. I chose to play the BLACK tees. This is not a course where anxiety will be permitted and tight hands lead to "duck hooks" and "Slice City USA". The course was "Sold the F out" (a.k.a. very crowded) on this visit with disc golfers and golfers all over the place. There was even a photographer. I found that the coffee bit me because some holes will have the next tee box behind the green that you are driving into or very close to it. I am not a hacker but I will slice or duck hook on occasion when tight or not focused and this made me hesitate on club selection because I didn't want to speed dial my insurance agent to see how good my homeowner's policy was in case of an errant ball. It gave new meaning to "risk vs. reward". But there is plenty of the other "risk vs. reward" here as well. Use the club you need to use and you may go deep and possibly injure someone. Use a lesser club and you're short at best case scenario but with some holes you don't make the green and your ball goes bouncing away off hillsides, cart paths, dirt paths etc.. Fortunately, on VISIT TWO the disc golfers were literally gone. Not a sight of a single one. I don't know if they limit the days for that or how it works, but we never saw one which allowed me to pretty much always choose the club I needed. Since the wind was high today I immediately decided to play the WHITE tees. I ended up with 4 par's and a birdie and enjoyed myself more so it was the right call. The FAIRWAYS are mostly in good or better shape but they are currently laying sod on some holes and you will see "ground under repair" signage on occasion. The course improved from our visit from the week prior so clearly the signs aren't "fake news" (so-to-speak). Some SAND TRAPS look a little worn so hopefully that is on their list. As were a couple TEE BOXES. The GREENS are mostly in really nice shape except a couple that were being aerated and had a lot of sand on them. The greens can be really tough since many are small with undulations and drop-off edges are very common where you could land in serious trouble. The course is near the freeway for a part of it so you'll get some noise there. The golf CARTS are newer but with no GPS. You can easily see why the pro's played a tourney here (see online video) because from the black tees you will face tests...especially when windy. The cart paths are dirt or blacktop. There are some dirt areas which may be part of the park or work-in-progress...I'm not sure. The challenging par 3's is where I made my money today. At every hole I had my analysis cap on and chose my club and spot carefully. I hit the mark on many par 3's which really put me in a good spot for birdie attempts or fairly easy pars. There are tons of rabbits, squirrels and young squirrels which adds to the visual charm. The clubhouse is modern beach house with music playing on the exterior. The course is mostly green and in good shape overall. So, leave the coffee for another day and enter "THE GOAT CHAMBER" ...the land of risk vs. reward and where smart golf will mostly reign supreme. read more

By then I had been there 3 hours for 9 holes and I just left. I cannot believe they did not manage how many golfers were out there. Never again. read more

I was pretty close to one of the previous long term owners who had a vision for the once run down Municipal 9-hole course. He converted it to and executive, par 65, 18-hole course and turned it into a local favorite and a snowbird destination. The current group are a great bunch and are keeping the Spirit of the Goat alive. They too have a vision and it closely mimics the ideals of the former owner but with a few twists that are only making it better. It had been several years since I had felt the grass of The Goat under my feet and I didn't realize how much I had missed it until I recently returned. I arrived and instantly felt at home with the entire crew being very welcoming and friendly. Some new additions include Disc Golf, it's pet friendly if your dog likes to play too, and a pro shop area that's continuously being upgraded. They also have music playing at a reasonable volume outside the shop and at first I wasn't sure how I felt about that but it but it turns out that I like it and it makes the experience a little better. The Yamaha electric carts seem fairly new and look nice and are the best carts in my opinion. They've paid homage to the former owner by naming the first hole after him and there's rumor that a future outdoor lounge may also bear his name. They've succeeded in attracting a younger crowd than was the norm which I think is fantastic. The vibe has changed for the better and seems to appeal to golfers of all ages, incomes, and skill levels. One of the things I think is going to help the course succeed is that the new group is making changes but also trying to keep the heritage of Goat Hill intact at the same time. It doesn't seem like just a business with the bottom line being the almighty dollar. It seems to be driven more from passion, and love of the game and of the course itself. With the recent rains and the addition of the reclaimed water to the irrigation the course looks better than ever. I've been around The Goat since the early 80's and can't remember a time when it looked this green. The Range - The driving range is unique in that it's one of very few local ranges that you can hit off of grass. There are a couple mock greens for targets on both sides of the range and a chipping target closer to the tees. They have club stands at each station and chairs and a club washing station right on the tee area. If you're like me and detest hitting off turf mats then this is the place for you. They have three sizes of baskets for range balls and range fees are commensurate with local ranges if not slightly less. The Course - Looks better than ever and looks to be similar to, if not the same as, the original par 65 that Lud designed and built. take a cart because the hills are steeper and longer than they look. I've walked it but by the end you're tired and ready for the 19th hole. Some of the holes are fairly open and a few are "Target Golf" at it's finest. If you're like me and can be a little spastic off the tee then make sure to bring plenty of balls and don't use your Mulligan too quickly. You may need it later! The green fees are reasonable especially when you factor in this... Where else can you play and actually see the ocean in So Cal? If it rained last night but it's sunny this morning... no problem! Call the shop because it's probably open. Water doesn't sit on a hill for long! Get yourself a Goat Card for $50 annually and save on beverages, range balls, apparel, and more as well as getting an inside track on upcoming events. Keep your eye on Goat Hill because it's only going to get better in the future. The "Save the Goat" campaign was a success and the new crew seems committed to constant improvement and I believe big things are in the works. A possible outdoor lounge, onsite prepared food, special events, and new ideas will keep The Goat fresh! read more

We love this course. Staffs are friendly, just like family. Kids love to play here. Very challenging. Nice view of the ocean. Love the location. Give it a try. John Ashworth poured some Mula into the course and it's looking very nice compared to when I came in 1991 on a date with my boyfriend who's now my husband for 25 yrs. They also have frisbee golf, few putting greens, driving range, small pro shop, a nice outdoor seating area and a nice bonfire pit area for them cold nights. Hopefully they will have a grill/food station in the future. They are also home to the NCJGA (North County Junior Golf Associations run by The awesome Coach Dave Emerick) Come give them a try but remember to Respect the Goat... read more

This place has my heart. It's good vibes plus golf! Me and my husband have been paired with some great people....and that's what you get here....great people all around! We even saw John Ashworth himself today working his butt off around the course making sure all the improvements were going smoothly. I kinda feel like....if you don't love this place....maybe you should reassess your life. Maybe you're taking things too seriously, maybe you need too much control. Really an amazing little treasure. Won a free round in a little grab bag of golf rounds at a charity auction. I had never heard of this course but it has a really fascinating back story. For a smallish executive type course its awesome. Very well maintained, greens are in great shape, carts and everything else are new. Very quirky course design where local knowledge is a huge plus, highly advise reading the little caddie card! I love the unique and creative course layout. Its very tight & challenging despite its relatively short length, a lot of undulation and cool looks. They also have very forward tees that make it great place to bring the youngest of golfers, plus a very casual atmosphere for golfers of all abilities. Found this place with golfnow very good price, bub didn't start until 12 40. My reservation was at 1145. I even came early at 11 and hit se balls. No courtsey buckets were given. Seems it's first come first serve weather you hav a reservation or now. Excuse was the carts are breakig down. This place is old and is showing it's age. No need to show up early since you'll just wait only. But neverthe less, you get a nice course for really cheap to play on. I like that you can drive the golf carts on the grass to your golf ball. I enjoyed playing the course once it got going. For a beginner I found it pretty challanging, but in the end had a great time. Price wise makes this place a winner. My friends thought it was quirky but I loved this place. The staff has a great attitude which is a huge plus when you're starting your day with them. The course? Some crazy hills that you'll be hitting up, over and between. More challenging than what I expected. I have to agree with other reviewers that if you are a golf course snob this place might not be for you. Pros: Low cost. Uncrowded. Friendly staff. Lots of good beers at the 19th hole. You can find lots of other people's lost balls. Cons: Some freeway noise at some holes. Fairways are not perfect - some drought management going on. We teed of yesterday, Sunday, at 10:50 am, and never had to wait or had anyone behind us waiting. I hope it stays like this. Only thing missing is hot dogs and burgers. Showed up at 11 AM and all 2-3 staff were doing nothing but hanging around, talking in the parking lot, and as far as I could tell doing absolutely nothing more to make this horrendous excuse for a complete course hazzard any better. Dirt everywhere, and I mean everywhere but on a few tees. Greens were pathetic, and if you can't drive to the pin you are watching a ball roll down hills, many lost into dirt and piles of cut trees. This shambles should be shut down, turned back to nature, or having tons pumped into it. I'm not sure how new ownership can justify tarnishing the name of this place with operations like this, absolutely avoid. If this course had water, any real grass, and proper management it could be a very good course. However as it is now, today (when I write this review) it is to be absolutely avoided even if greens fees with cart where free. It should be shut down for a year and rehabbed properly. read more

This is one of the strangest courses I've ever played. I played from the black tees to make the par 4s more challenging. But that also made some of the par 3s very difficult - bordering on unfair, considering the rating and slope of the course. As mentioned by others, the layout is very odd, and you must pay attention to the signage to find our way from green to tee. I didn't really have a problem with that. I had more trouble trying to figure out where I should be hitting the ball off the tee, and where the green is. There were several blind tee shots. Situational awareness, for safety sake, is key on this course. I paid $34 for 18 holes with a cart on Friday afternoon (June 30, 2016). In retrospect, that seems a little steep, seeing as how I can play Oceanside Municipal for $2 more, and Boulder Oaks for $9 less. Heck, I paid $46 at Arrowood the prior Monday! Some of the holes were fun. Others were very odd. I think this course is best if you want to get out on short notice without a tee time, and want to get done in less than 4 hours. read more

I go to Goat Hill Park to play disc golf, not "ball golf". I enjoy the long distances of the holes - it gives me a chance to work on my driving game. And it's usually windy, so there's the extra challenge of accounting for the wind on drives and putts. The layout provides players with many challenging par 4's and a few very tough par 5's - something you don't get very often when playing disc golf. The staff is very friendly and approachable - great customer service. We're about one year into ownership by a new management team that is rehabilitating an old and abused golf course. This group has a great plan to turn Goat Hill Park into a place where kids can learn about golf and caddying and families can enjoy. Bringing disc golf play back (in Nov. 2014) was a welcome move. The course itself is currently undergoing an "Extreme Makeover", with many dead trees (from mismanagement by the previous group) being removed along with lots of turf - trying to make the course more water-wise and environmentally-friendly. It looks pretty rough right now but it's headed in the right direction! Great beer selection - getting better every day - and newly-remodeled patio for enjoying a beer and rehashing a round. Why only 4 stars? I'll reserve the final star until disc golfers are allowed to use golf carts, the same as ball golfers. I know that there have been some problems in the past where a few disc golfers misused carts, but they are in the vast minority (I played yesterday and witnessed ball golfers driving all over the fairways, not heeding the "cart path only" rule printed on a sign inside their carts). I hope Goat Hill Park management will work with the disc golf community to come up with a plan for re-introducing carts - maybe reserved for members of the local disc golf club? As a community, we need to support Goat Hill! It is under new ownership, and there have been tremendous efforts to clean it up. The team there is working nonnstop; reseeding, cleaning, remodeling the club house, and will be spending a lot of money over the next couple of years to renew this course that has been in Oceanside since 1952. It's a gem that still needs some polish, but a gem nonetheless. Get out there, play some casual rounds, use the range, and support this amazing effort. The team there, btw, is amazing. Now after playing this course I understand why they call it goat hill. Because only a mountain goat has the agility to walk this poorly layed out and somewhat dangerous course. The cart paths if you can call them paths are mostly rut filled dirt paths with such little signage that it is easy to get lost from one hole to another. I normally play on Pendleton and out in Temecula, but came here on a last minute, let's-get-out-and-play-somewhere-without-a-tee-time decision. When I showed up I found out why I didn't need a tee time. From what I could tell, there was only one guy working there. Not sure how you run a golf course with one guy, but he was doing it. He's the only reason they get the one star (aside from the mandated star that yelp makes you give). Nice guy, pro shop was clean, they had cold drinks and a decent selection of beers and little snacks. The range was all grass, which is always appreciated. The range balls looked like a sample of golf balls from the past 10 years mixed int with the typical striped white or yellow range ball. If you like a knuckleball 8-iron mixed into your warmup, this is the ticket. The course was spotty. As in, there are spots of green grass mixed into the dirt and hills. It's a short course, so a few par-4s (there were par 5s too) but mostly par 3s. I was in the "fairway" for the par 4/5s (when my ball didn't bounce out of them due to the dirt) and it was almost entirely packed dirt and twig remnants. The greens were extremely soft and "hairy" with every green having a few large gashes and bald/dead spots. The icing on this cake: 2 homeless dudes strolling through in front of us while I'm stepping up to my shot. Nothing against homeless people, but I'd rather not have to wait on them, or have to wonder if my ball might be under the flannel shirt that they left behind. It's SoCal people. There are better places at close to the same price. They'll even have grass... read more

I give this course a "1 star" only because I have to. Zero stars would be more like it. There are no fairways here. At all. If you can drive from the tee box to the green on a par 4.. then, maybe.. really maybe... this is ok. But, if you need some fairway to get between the tee box and the green, then forget it. I would like to note for the past year or two they have been remodeling the course which might make it worse than it actually is. For example we played the course yesterday and there were only 9 holes playable, so we did each hole twice. For beginners it might be a tough course as it's very hilly, meaning if your ball isn't in the fairway or on the green it is likely to roll down fast. The main reason for the 4 is the improvements I have seen and hear about being made. Yesterday I saw most the cart paths on the unplayable 9 holes being demolished for new ones. Most the greens have a great grass that plays a little fast but looks nice. They have new flags with wood in the middle which looks classy and is easy to pull out for putts. They have a new club house with what looks like a great outdoor bar. I'm excited to see the improvements they will continue to make! read more

Even though the course is in the best shape I have seen in 50 years when you have groups of seven players it ruins the pace for everyone else. If you pay $50 to play you would expect that some supervision of group size would be enforced. I get it that they are offering a low key attitude but golf is golf and some rules should be respected. Would you want to wait 4-5 minutes on every tee adding an hour plus to your round? I won't go back till they start limiting group size like every other decent course. They are probably thinking good riddance but I could care less. Golf teaches us to respect others but it's not happening at the goat. read more

I went with the husband (who sucks more than me) but I enjoyed how the "new management" was nice and understanding of our lack of skills. Haha. My dream came true here the other day. I got to ride a golf cart!!! I am not a golfer, nor a disc golfer, but I do play disc golf from time to time. I am most definitely a beginner. This course is definitely NOT for beginners. There are many spots where you have to throw over a canyon onto a hill, or throw very straight unless you want your disc lost to the freeway or bush area. I heard from Sean Gecko R that there is some tension between golfers and disc golfers. I did not experience this while I was there and was actually quite friendly with the golfers in front of us. The course is long and quite challenging. It is quite fun though, especially riding the golf cart part!! This is not a fancy golf course I believe it was referred to the "working mans course" which is very true. The roads for the golf carts are quite uneven and treacherous, but that is part of the fun. They sell beer, snacks, and drinks at the shop! yay root beer and pretzels. It is $10 a person with golf cart on weekdays and $12 per person on weekends. Cheaper if you walk, but whats the fun in that1?!? read more
