Went in with a friend. Right at 5pm. The service was good and the place clean. We ordered miso soup and fried roll to start with. The fish was fresh, the toppings well placed but to much mayonnaise in the spicy dressings. The salad they give has a good tasting dressing on it. Also, nice variety of canned beers. read more

Below disappointed with this place. Do not come here fools. I love sushi and was so excited to eat some, but it turned out to not be good. Also, can we talk about how we waited 45 min for ONE roll. It was extremely small so we ordered another one. Waited 45 min for that one too. The waiters/waitresses have terrible communication. Never even ordered our second roll until after a half an hour of waiting. I could say more but I don't want to bore you. Once again, do not come here. Disappointed. Oh and waiters talk so quiet you can't hear them in the loud environment. And they're so unnecessarily sassy I wanted to scream "back off sis I don't need this I'll make my own roll". I was in town for a work event and asked some locals what was the best sushi place in town. I am always skeptical of recommendations because I feel like I'm a terrible sushi snob (for which I apologize). First off, they're open on a Monday, which is pretty rare where I'm from so again, I was a little scared. Second, I ordered delivery, which is often frought with minor issues when dealing with sushi and presentation. Let me tell you, Godai was outstanding! Their portions were well done with the sushi to rice ratio being pretty much perfect. I ordered this platter that they had for $21.95 which was incredibly fresh and consisted of; unagi, tai, ika, maguro, sake and a mixed tekka maki roll.Extremely tasty and outstandingly fresh! I also had a spider roll, which is one of my favorites. It too was outstanding. I am here for the rest of the week and as I view sushi as a treat, not a staple, hopefully I can resist the temptation to not eat here 3 or 4 more times before I go! read more

First off, I am a Japanese food fanatic. Not only is it part of my heritage and culture, I've been cooking the food for the past eight years; every time I patronize (no pun intended) a Japanese restaurant, I usually grade/review them based on whether their dish is better than what I can produce in the comforts of my own kitchen. Now that I'm done gloating, I came here for lunch with three friends with hopes of finally finding an authentic Japanese restaurant in San Antonio. Although I'm sad to report that my long-time mission is yet to continue on, my personal experience at Godai was amazing and here's why. We sat down at around 1145, waiting for our server to take our orders, which only happened about 15 minutes later at 1200, probably because the place was packed, and our third member was still out in the parking lot looking for parking space (which is usually a good sign at the restaurant.) The waiter seemed rather annoyed and was rude when I asked for a few things (i.e. my friend didn't want any lemon in his water or any sauce in his salad, to which he promptly snapped back with an "I know" in a dismissive tone, but then again it's lunchtime, so I guess it's somewhat expected.) but we continued on with our meal regardless--we were commenting on some of the obvious signs of non-authenticity such as the fact that the place looks like it used to be a steakhouse, and that for a "Japanese" restaurant, Godai seems to plays a lot of Korean music as we waited for the waiter to take our orders, but I digress. I ordered the katsudon lunch entree which came with your standard miso and salad. The miso was cooked right (awase miso, not standalone aka/shiro) and the salad... well, it's a western invention so I can't comment too much about it. The katsudon itself was disappointing in an expectable manner; your traditional katsudon is usually cooked in a oyakonabe, which to non-Japanese speakers, is a frying pan with a vertical handle around the size of a shallow tea cup plate. Evidenced by the fact that my katsudon had other ingredients that normally don't belong in katsudon such as carrots and squash mixed into it, I figured the cook didn't use an oyakonabe (which usually allows for a small amount of ingredients to cook in just the right amount of time to give the eggs the "hanjuku" or half-boiled texture), and that he probably wasn't Japanese or knew very much about Japanese home cuisine--a point further reinforced by the fact that my friends' chicken and beef yakisobas had HUGE chunks of chicken floating on top of the noodles (tip: there's two "schools" of yakisoba in Japanese-Chinese cuisine into which Godai's did not fall into: one fries CHOPPED UP ingredients with the noodles after it's been boiled and collander'd; the other, or more Sinitic school, puts all the ingredients into a delicious broth [usually referred to as "an"] and generously dumps it over the fried noodles). So up to this point, my dining experience at Godai was absolutely horrible--the service was rather clumsy, the food was disappointing, and the food wasn't as reasonably priced as I thought it'd be--until when time came for us to pay for the check. Just as we asked for the check, a gentleman approached us with his party of four, smiled at us and said "Thank you for your service." Now, it's really awkward when anyone does this to any military serviceman, not because we're undeserving of the thanks (although it might be the case for myself), but because we never know how to react/reply to comments such as these. In one swift moment of chaos and confusion we smiled back and told the gentleman and his party "Thank you" and took out our pens expecting to sign for a disappointing meal when our waiter came with the checks with huge letters reading "VOID" across the paper and told us that someone had already paid for us. The four stars on this review go out to the gentleman and the three people that made us feel proud to serve this amazing country on an unexpectedly pleasant Wednesday afternoon; real review to follow the next time I visit this place for a hopefully better meal. read more

I do believe that we have found our new regular sushi place! I met my wife here for lunch earlier today. I like sushi, but if she had her way she'd eat it at least twice a week, As for me, it took me moving to Cali and having sushi out there to make me a fan of it. Now that we are here in San Antonio we were looking for our go-to sushi place. I think we found it. We walked in and were greeted by the chefs behind the counter. I looked directly in front of them at their refrigerated cases and noticed the succulent fillets, what stood out most was the deep red of the tuna sitting next to a rosy-orange salmon. My wife opted for the sushi lunch and i chose a bento. that included tempura, sushi, a tuna roll a small sliced pork katsu and rice and stir fry veg. Everything was delicious.. We also had an order of gyoza which were ok,our son sure did like them. Our service was also impeccable, and the atmosphere is very relaxing and inviting. They even have Asahi Black there which is my favorite Japanese Beer. Top it all off this place is so close to our house that we could walk there if we wanted. It has such high ratings, so I was thrown off when I tried it out. The maki rolls have tons of rice and are very filling. Geez, you would think that they save that kind of tactic for buffet. The seating is kind of all crammed in together. I had someone's butt in my face a few times during my meal. There was extra wasabi on my sashimi, which means that it was put there to hide the fact that the fish was not as fresh as it could be. There's a pretty long list of not sushi dishes that all look delicious as well, specifically the bulgogi and the chicken katsu, and they have fried oreos! I am sitting here at Godai right now... And have been sitting with everyone at my table with empty glasses for the past 30 minutes.... And watching someone's sushi rolls sit on the counter for the past 25 minutes - can we say there will be emergency bathroom trips in their future? Our soup, salad, appetizer were all brought out at the same time with the entrees coming within 5 minutes. We had not finished our salads yet - everything was on the table at the same time. The calamari appetizer is reminiscent of Long John Silver's - I think there was maybe squid in there..somewhere. The sushi tasted good but the service was absolutely horrible - it was very slow when we first got there but while we were waiting they got slammed. A different waitress filled our glasses with water after like 45 minutes (we had sprite and ice teas but because almost all the ice was gone, I think she thought they were waters). We asked for my daughter's left over yakisoba to go (she finished less than 1/2) but never got it back. We gave up and left. If you decide to come here, sit at the bar so you can make sure you get your food right after it is made. read more

Not impressed. The service was slow and they weren't busy. The rolls were bland. The tempura wasn't crunchy at all. The shrimp was decent. The salad had a peanut sauce that was gross. Godai is a solid mom & pop joint. I have had only positive experiences at Godai. I've been with a group of ten for lunch, and we hardly had to wait at all. All lunch orders come with soup that hits the spot. When a couple girlfriends and I went for dinner and had to wait for a little while, we were given complimentary wine. I love Godai because it seems like they go out of their way to make their customers feel happy and special, and I, for one, really appreciate that touch. Visited Godai last night with some friends. There was a short wait- about 15-20 minutes, but that's to be expected on weekend nights. When we were seated, the service was a bit slow, but the wait staff was dedicated to making up any wait time due to how busy they were. We had a sampling of rolls- spicy tuna and crab, spider roll, Johanna roll, A&M roll, and an escolar roll. All were excellent and fresh- though the A&M was my personal favorite. I'm a big sushi fan and I've been to many sushi restaurants in San Antonio and Godai is the best hands down. I love this place! Their fish is super fresh and clean and the flavors are amazing. The price is pretty competitive because they do give you a salad and miso soup and the servings are large. I love the crab roll appetizer, the bagel roll, and any of their specialty rolls. Went here for lunch with my fellow students yesterday. i like the building...first thing that came to mind was a old wooden boat/cottage feel? The place was 3/4 full during the 12-1 lunch hour. Despite the big 15+ party next to us (us being a medium sized party of 9), we received our food fairly swift although we did have to wait a few minutes to be greeted/drink orders taken. Soup was good-not too much tofu & mushrooms was an added plus :) Salad dressing was sweet. i did not have sushi for i was in a veggie mood! i ordered the chicken yakisoba and it was satisfying-nice variety of vegtables, chicken was flavorful/tender and the noodles were cooked well *watch out for the seasoning they put around the plate, it was a bit spicy*. My tablemates DID order sushi and their rep of having huge rolls did not disappoint! i agree-i did feel a tad awkward shoving that huge, circular food into my mouth ;) New to the consuming of fish, but it seemed the salmon was fresh. read more

This is painfully expensive for what you receive. I received warm soup, upon receiving my Caterpillar roll and four pieces of salmon nigiri I found the roll to look as though it was through together with the avocado on to cut into mismatched portions and not remotely lined property. That doesn't even mean cover the fact it was so small and cost more than any other Caterpillar roll I have gotten and other sushi places. I have to get a second roll, A sunset roll, which was small as well and had the same care as the Caterpillar. I can understand A higher price for something that looks good on the plate, but that wasn't there. I have had Caterpillar rolls that look like something out of a Pixar movie in regards to the resemblance to a caterpillar, mine however looked like it was made by someone who spends their days watching pixar movies. For all of that, my bill was in the mid forties for myself before tip. I could have went else where, gotten a better experience, better plate presentation, no need for the second roll, and walk out with spending under thirty bucks. read more

Best Sushi in SA! Huge portions that are worth the price and wait.

So I was there tonight for dinner and everything was fine, despite the soup being luke warm. Got the longhorn and some sashimi. Then as we were wrapping things up, I spotted a huge roach crawling down a wall. I will never eat there again now. There just shouldn't be nasty critters in any establishment that serves food. I literally wish I could throw up. Pest control exists for a reason. I know it's been raining a lot but get it together. Judging from how many roaches were also crawling around in front of the place, they haven't had an exterminator come out in a while. So gross!! read more

Best sushi in San Antonio, likely Texas for that matter. Simply fantastic. If it's not fresh, they don't serve it. The Escolar is buttery and spicy, just as it should be. They marinate it in a pepper brine for a while before slicing it paper thin and rolling it up - fantastic. The Iz roll is also excellent, and if you order it with the Escolar roll you'll likely be too full to finish both. Most people come for the sushi enchiladas, but there's no sense in that with so many other choices. All the sashimi is good, and there are plenty of options for your friends who prefer classic Japanese dishes (ie, not sushi). The tea's good, as is the service; the only thing lacking is the miso soup. read more

The restaurant is a grass topped shack with metal walls, it's small and a bit dingy. I really like this place a lot. The sushi quality is great and the portions are generous, to say the least. Almost too generous. I have issues eating rolls in one bite without getting nauseous. Then I take two bites and a mess results. I know this can be simply remedied by asking the sushi chef to use less fish. Ya well.. I haven't. The restaurant is reasonably price. Just went this last weekend, and I was pleasantly surprised. The outside doesn't look the greatest, but inside, it's a cloth napkin kind of place. The rolls were very well priced, I thought, cheaper than sushi zushi. Plus the soup and salad with every meal was awesome too! The tofu miso soup is absolutely delicious. But everything from their small basic maki rolls to their bigger rolls was just wonderful. The sushi is well prepared, tasty, and incredibly fresh. The menu options are plentiful. The wait staff were extremely helpful with describing some of the more popular sushi dishes. I went with the more traditional rainbow roll and the Mrs. got the Longhorn roll. The only downer was the soy sauce, low sodium...that stuff is not for me. Otherwise great food and experience.
