I absolutely LOVE Chicago Dogs, as living in VA, we don't have access to the authentic thing... So, when in Chicago, I always try to hit a Portillos or someplace that has them and on this most recent visit I was too busy to get any while in town, so I ended up grabbing one here, at Gold Coast while about to fly out. I also equally love a good Italian Beef with spicy giardiniera, so I got one of those as well. The guy taking my order was friendly and when I asked which was better, he told me to go with the Italian Beef. I ultimately chose both and waited for them to be made, which only took a few minutes. Each sandwich comes with an order of fries, but I didn't want that many fries, but they don't sell them (or didn't offer them) without fries. When it came time to dive in... I started with the Chicago Dog and it looked decent, even with one sad slice of tomato across the center. It's supposed to have a small wedge of tomato inside it. The pickled green peppers were all at the back of the hot dog and there were only 2... so, I didn't get a bite of this until I got to that part of the hot dog. The rest of it was on-point! They even used a Vienna beef hot dog. When it came to the Italian Beef, I got the au jus on the side to dip and it came in a small cup, so I poured it onto the sandwich as I was eating it. Unfortunately, the beef was very dry, even though there was a LOT of it there and the spicy gardenia was basic and bland... I hardly noticed it was there. The bread was starchy and dense and not flavored well. Overall, this wasn't a very good Chicago Style Italian Beef sandwich. I really wanted to like this place, as it was my only hope for trying the basics on this visit, but I wasn't too impressed. If I needed to stop in here again in the future, I'll only go with the dog, definitely not the Italian Beef. read more

Long layover in O'hare so I needed lunch and figured why the hell not? When in Rome, right? The space is small and u assuming yet manages to feel like a little shop on the Chicago streets. An army of people was cooking and I ordered a Chicago dog, which came with fries and was about $10. No bad. The meal was ready in about two minutes. Freaky fast . This is my new go to for quick airport food while navigating through Chicago. For $9 i got this massive dog with all the fixings. Im from NC and they dont do dogs like this down here. I normally wouldnt get a hot dog with all the toppings this had, but since I was in Chicago I had to try it Chicago style and was very glad I did. It had a great crunch and was full of flavor. I wouldnt recommend standing or eating this over anything but a table since it is juicy with the peppers and pickle. Staff were great even despite me wearing my Packers tee. I went to the refrigerated aisle and grabbed the Thai Drunken noodles. For a meal at the airport, it was a good price for quantity. It had little tofu pieces in the noodles and was also accompanied by this delicious red chili sauce. That goes to say it wasn't incredibly spicy. The cook/server not very friendly guy. I asked for philly cheese and what i got had hardly any cheese on it. Oh yes, Chicago's Gold Coast hot dog. What is the fuss with this place? The hot dog is just a hot dog! I swear it's just a boiled Oscar Mayer wiener. No kielbasas or frankfurter...it's just a ordinary hot dog. Drenched with mustard, a little dill pickle, a cute little pepper and some really green colored pickled relish which was obviously food dyed. I forget if onions were on mine or if that was one of the options. All fancy for a really plain weiner on a just as plain ol' hot dog bun. This is THE place to eat your feelings in Terminal 5. I myself inhaled an order of cheese fries while stressed out about a flight delay! They were fresh, tasty, and crisp, with ample cheese. The Chicago style polish my BF grabbed here was also great, and among the better dogs we had over our entire trip, shockingly. But the real proof that this place rocks is that it's the only airport food stand that had a line snaking down the hall. The people have spoken, and they prefer Gold Coast Dogs! read more

Sure it's an airport and I wouldn't suggest anyone to stop by a NY/NJ airport pizza joint to find authentic slices, but this is a dog, grilled at that, and known in Chicago, I guess, according to my YELP research. To be honest with you, there was extreme bias stacked up against anything Chicago does that NY/NJ cooks up, in my book, pizza, steak, and especially dogs, which Jersey does the best. Now, it's more of trying Vienna beef that interested me more than the Chicago style itself. The dog was very refreshing. I love the heat from the dog and crispy coldness of the veggies. I can see why the Second City enjoys these treats. I'm not a pickle dude, so the huge dill and relish was surprisingly well meshed together. The flavors made me say I'd stop again. The price, on the other hand, is offensive. I ordered the char dog Chicago style. It looks like they split a hot dog and threw it on the grill. Good enough for me. It tasted good but for the price of a char dog and a juice, I could have eaten a meal and Chilli's and had food left over. On my next visit, I decided to try the Italian beef. There was a sign that offered gyros but they seemed more proud of the Italian beef. I'd never tried it but I'd heard it was a Chicago staple. He asked if I wanted it Chicago style and I answered, "Of course." He asked if I wanted it dipped. "In what?" I asked looking as ignorant as I was about the matter. I told him to go for it after he explained they could dip it in "the stuff the meat was in". Meat juice sounded good to me! This thing smelled horrible to my nose, like nothing I'd ever smelled. I opened it and it looked like chitterlings on a bun! Someone please tell me that's not what I ate. I was a little hungry and a lot brave so I closed my eyes and put it in my mouth. It was difficult but the more I chewed, the more I liked it. It was a better value than the char dog and had a whole lot more flavor. Contrary to what my nose had been telling me, I'm a fan of very strong flavors and this brought it. The taste resembled Italian sausage but not as good and a lot bolder. When it's busy, it is VERY confusing. Make sure you wait at the "order here" sign and make someone take your order before walking over to the only manned station and paying your money. I watched at least 5 people pay and wait only to find out that their food order had never been placed. They also sell fancy potato chips (sweet potato, kettle cooked, sea salt, New York Cheddar) and Thatcher's popcorn. Fruit cups, salads, and juices are available on the other side. For that though, I'd go to Starbucks. Starbucks is cheaper. Imagine that! read more

I was born and raised in Chicago. I'm a native and a proud Midwesterner, having lived here for 25 years. Every time I come home for a visit, I get a hot dog here before flying out and today was the first time I've been shamed for wanting ketchup. The signs aside, when I asked for it, the employee pointed to their "warning" about the offensiveness of the condiment. Folks, I've been getting ketchup on my hot dogs in Chicago for over 40 years, from my childhood neighborhood joints to the Demon Dogs days on Fullerton and my brother's go-to place in Logan Square. What a dumb thing to be judgmental about, especially when people are giving you their money and have a flight to catch. The burger was good, but they don't have listed that Chicago ='s automatic mustard on every hot dog & hamburger without asking you and ketchup & mayonnaise is blasphemy so I wasn't aware they'd put mustard on my burger til it was too late. A traditional bite with the neon relish, sport peppers, mustard, tomato, pickle, season salt...but this one was GRILLED! I thought I liked steamed & grilled equally, this one changed my mind. I got the jumbo, and I like that it had slashes cut on it diagonally to help me get a good bite. To make an analogy to the last yelper, this reminded me of some good dates I had in the past: attractive, simple, & cheap. Conversely, I don't really care for men without discernment - you don't know what a Chicago dog is, and you can't tell the difference between boiled or grilled. feh! read more

I know what you are thinking. Four stars for airport food; what the #*%@, right? Well, I have my reasons. Two of my gourmand friends from Seattle had a layover at O'Hare. I had planned on picking them up and exposing them to some Chicago cuisine. Unfortunately, their flight got delayed and we didn't have enough time to go offsite. Only terminal 5 has restaurants outside the security check in. Gold Coast Dogs seemed the most promising of the food court selections especially since my friends were keen on sampling items unique to Chicago. We ordered the Char Polish Sausage hot dogs and Italian Beef sandwiches. The hot dogs were packed with all the condiments: mustard, small cubes of relish and onions, a slice of tomato, a slice of pickle, and multiple little peppers. I don't like pickles and I am not a big fan of relish, but the combination of flavors worked on this dog. Both my friends enjoyed their meals as much as I did. The beer from the adjacent bar also added to the dining experience. I learned two things today: 1) There is a viable option for food outside of the security gates at O'Hare. 2) Despite the dirty or envious looks you may get from other passengers, it is not illegal to enjoy a cup of beer while riding the people mover between terminals. read more

Came to this spot early mornin' at about 6am, and not only was I not the only one fighting my sleep apparently this staff was too! My mom and I had to repeat several condiments requests to them and yea they would forget, and THEN we would have to hand them back the dog and pay xtra for the stuff asked for..When it wasn't our fault! I began this cross country trip with an ice tea, tums, Imodium,Ibuprofen , followed by a hot tea, red wine, cheese fruit and then it went down hill with a kids burger from McDonalds ending with a Gold Coast hot dog. The dog had bright green relish obviously homemade, blah mustard and two bags of cold fries. The older man at the cash register was not especially friendly for all the money I spent there with an additional order of a spicy chicken sandwich. Was shocked to find out that they offered a Ditka Chicken Sausage and Turkey Burger. Both were awesome. The Ditka Chicken Sausage was well prepared with a wedge of pickle, chopped tomatoes, ketchup, mustard, and onions. The Turkey Burger was good, a tad on the dry side. I always get Italian beef at o'hare airport but this time it was terrible. I asked for extra cheese and paid for it and didn't see any on top. They loaded it with hot peppers not just bell peppers. So spicy I can't even eat it. Then when I took it back to the place and said I paid for extra cheese they said it was on the bottom and never fixed It even though they acted like they did. If you pay for extra cheese you expect to see it. Worst service ever! Will never go there AGAIN even if I'm starving. Thanks but no thanks Chicago dogs Gold Coast. I am a Chicago native and love its hot dogs. We were between flights on our way to NYC and wanted an authentic Chicago hot dog. This is not it. The hot dogs at this place were so bad that my son could not eat his. Cold and so soggy that the bun fell apart. Employees seemed very unhappy. I even had to remind the cashier to charge me for two dogs rather than one. Bad manager. Next time you are in San Antonio, eat a genuine Chicago hot dog at Jerry's on Commerce Street. read more
