This is my first time at this Gold Star Chili location. Upon walking in, this place is pretty clean, spacious, and the music is good. The staff here is great, friendly, and professional. In the Cincinnati area, apparently there's a disagreement on which chain has the better chili, Skyline or Gold Star... While I'm not going to enter that debate, I will say that I did enjoy my stop at the Gold Star Chili off 71/75 at Mt. Zion. The menu was to be expected - a lot of chili and a lot of cheese - but it went further to provide sandwiches, salads, and of course coney dogs. I ordered a coney and a fried chicken sandwich... both were really quite a treat. The coney had the right amount of chili flavor and cheese, pretty standard. The fried chicken was the real winner though! It didn't look like anything more than N ordinary fast food chicken sandwich, but the flavor of the chicken was very surprising, and it was crunchy and juicy. A nice hint of dill from the pickle and it was so good! I'd certainly recommend trying Gold Star if you're in the Cincy area... but I'm still not going to say which restaurant is better! read more

I retried Gold Star for lunch today as I'm normally a Skyline person, but received a gift card for Gold Star. I always order a Cheese Coney and 3 Way, so wanted to compare. What I call "vessels" for the chili (hot dog/ noodles) and the cheese taste almost identical from either chain. The main difference is the chili. Skyline is a tinge sweeter to me, and when I'm craving Cincinnati Chili, that's what I'm wanting. The Small 3 Way was also MUCH smaller than I anticipated. I didn't order one this time, but always recommend the milkshakes at Gold Star! read more

I was in Kentucky to visit family and had to get my chili fix. First time I've been to this location. It was your average Gold Star. We seated ourselves in an open booth. Our server was friendly and helped us out with the menu. I had sworn there were combos, but didn't see them on the menu. She told us they still have them and rattled them all off from memory. After watching the travel channel and watching 4 Coney places around the world - I suddenly developed a craving. I know there is a Gold Star down the street so I put on my bunny slippers and jumped in my car to begin my coney adventure. This location was staffed by adults who seemed to have work together for quite some time. I think it makes a difference. I ordered a couple of cheese coney's and fries. My food came out picture perfect and hot.. It was awesome - that is all i can say. It really hit the spot. I'm a healthy eater. If I lived in KY I'd never come here, simply because it doesn't sit well in the stomach. Meanwhile, having met a friend in town from Seattle, I had to take him to Gold Star. A trip to this region wouldn't be complete without it. (I bought him Skyline at the Red's game.) For fast food the chili here isn't bad. It's pretty tasty, in fact. I avoided the hot dogs and three way action and settled for a bit of chili on top of spaghetti, and kept it down to the kids size. With that it's pretty good and not too much to unsettle the stomach. My friend ordered a chili burrito which he demolished. If you're in the mood for fast food - and chili - you'll love this place. Good service and it won't burn a hole in your pocket, but use caution making a habit of it or you'll need larger clothes. read more

Really don't care if it's Gold Star or Skyline... they don't have this anywhere else but the area I grew up in and it's like the first stop off the plane. I prefer the chili cheese puffs (no hot dog) to the ubiquitous 3-way. Not something to eat every day, but a regional specialty that really is a must try. read more

A new occupation always brings with it the opportunity for me to enjoy and expand upon one of my favorite pastimes, eating at new places! And, of course, writing about it here. Gold Star Chili is a local franchise for the uninitiated. A direct competitor to the bigger Skyline Chili, GS serves up the Cincinnati standards: Cheese Coneys (chili dogs), Cincinnati-style chili, sandwiches and a few other items. Honestly, to not get chili in one of these establishments would simply be defeating the purpose so don't go in looking to order a burger. I sidled my way to an empty stool at the bar, the interior reminiscent to a '50s style diner with more seating, and perused the menu. The menu is limited, but what you order is not half as important as how you order. It separates the greenhorns from the local yokels. Or the true Bengals fan from every other human on earth. I ordered, "2 CC, O, no Mo" or 2 Cheese Coneys, with onions, no mustard. Of course I ordered it the latter way but this is as much a lesson in food etiquette as it is a review so bear with me. (For more GS food etiquette, see here: http://www.goldstarchili.com/menu/) A cheese coney is a standard hot dog slathered with Cincinnati-style chili, loaded with grated cheddar cheese and on a steamed hot dog bun. Cheese coneys are to Cincinnati as White Castle sliders are to Kansas City. It's beer food. Honestly a little expensive for beer food but that's what it is nonetheless. Gold Star's chili is thick, beanless of course, with a slight cinnamoniness but not as overpowering as Skyline's. I would say I prefer GS. I also enjoyed the crisp chopped onions too. They weren't terribly strong and gave the chili a sweetness. My one caveat to making this a regular dining choice would be the price. Coneys are not big, again, think hot dog slider, but they run about $2.50 a piece here. I can almost consider a $1.50 each but I couldn't regularly justify paying $6 for 2 small hot dogs, some crinkle fries and a drink. It's just not that spectacular. read more

So umm...I had some reservations about Cincinnati chili, but since I don't know the next time I'll be in the area I wanted to make sure I didn't leave without trying it. THIS SHIT IS DELISH. I went all out with the Firehouse 5 Way and a cheese coney and it didn't disappoint! Not to mention our server Sheila was AMAZING and super hospitable. The food came out what felt like 30 seconds after we ordered it (I'm sure there's wizards back there cooking this stuff up) and after the first taste that fork became a SHOVEL. I can't wait to fly back home and order some of the seasoning mix and cans of chili to have for a private reserve back in NC! read more

Zero if I could. No service... they acted like we weren't even sitting there. Ants were eating dropped food on floor that had been there for hours looked like. They charged for an extra drink, didn't take off for free coney coupon I had and looked at me like I was some kind of alien when I questioned them about their mistakes.
