(Steve's wife) I scheduled Gold Tooth Gorilla for a dead tree trim-down in the backyard and a pruning in the front. I booked with them because I was told it was their work at a neighbor's house. David Wayne came out, took pictures and gave me a quote. I agreed to the work. When I came home the "first" day I found the tree had not been lowered to what we agreed to and instead of debris being chipped much of it was thrown down the hillside that I had just raked. The logs they left behind were not moveable as they were all oversized. An example would be 48" long and 22" in diameter. As for the pruning out front, I am 5-2 and I did more work than they did, that I paid for. Let me also add that the workers damaged the gutter on our shed and just left the broken piece hanging there. I called David and they came back a 2nd time to make the logs shorter so that we could actually move them and to repair the gutter. I had also raked up the hillside, again, and was told they would properly chip the debris on their return trip. Did they? Nope. I was furious. They chipped some and threw the rest down the hillside again. The original work was done in July and it has taken me this long to be able to write a less than angry review. I would not hire Gold Tooth unless you, the property owner, are there to supervise and make sure the work gets done as agreed to. In addition, on July 23rd I paid the 50% deposit. Beginning July 31st I was receiving emails of the Invoice that said "Overdue Invoice.....More Details; Date of issue: Jul. 25, Due Aug. 24." read more

This company is completely awful. They dropped a load of wood for Chip Drop in the street of a residential neighborhood. There where specific instructions to drop in driveway. I contacted GOLD TOOTH GORILLA numerous times and they denied that they dropped the load in the street. Even when I showed them the pictures of their employee doing it. CHIP DROP was no better on a response to my numerous emails also. I had to call out a police officer who even called them to do something about it. They also ignored the Portland Police Officer. You bunch of assholes, I had to pay $100 to get the shit wood hauled away. read more

Our home has wetland borders on either side with restrictive rules about what can be cut down and when. Several large cedars were dying and large enough that they could hit neighboring homes. The Gold Tooth Gorilla crew landed every one of 7 trees right where they planned, no injuries, no landscape damage, and no mess left behind. After the ice storm we noticed that our large pine tree was leaning toward power lines and the neighbor's house. Gold Tooth Gorilla tree service was working across the street and David Wayne, the owner, was happy to take a look. I was so impressed with David's concern for our situation. He made us a priority and promised to get the tree out before the end of the week. The next day, PGE came and proceeded to cut the tree down. I hate to post a review like this, but we had such a frustrating experience with this company that I thought it was important to make potential customers aware. Our neighbor hired Gold Tooth Gorilla to trim a tree that hangs over our backyard. I spoke with the owner about some items in our yard that might be in the workers' way, and we moved them. I emphasized that I'd be home all day and available to come back outside any time to move patio furniture or potted plants if anything else would impede the crew's work or be at risk of damage. The owner said everything else would be safe but confirmed that someone would let me know if something ended up being in the way. Unfortunately, later that evening I discovered that a large pot in my yard had been cracked into pieces. It was in a different place than usual and had been turned around, with the smashed half hidden from view. The plant inside was also destroyed. It was clear that someone broke the pot and moved it to try to prevent me from noticing. I was annoyed that the pot was broken, but I was angry that I had specifically offered to move it, been told that wasn't necessary, and then someone tried to hide the damage from me instead of just being honest about it. I contacted the owner, and he offered to reimburse me for a replacement pot. I purchased a new pot of the same size and style as the broken one, from the same store where I bought the original pot, and sent the owner the receipt. Then he became angry, accused me of price gouging, and refused to pay the full amount. He offered me a small fraction of the cost of the replacement pot. Unfortunately, pots are expensive, and the one the worker broke was a large one. I made sure that the pot I purchased was an exact replacement for the broken one, and it seemed clear to me that the company paying for it (as the owner originally agreed to do) was the only fair solution. (I did not ask for reimbursement for a new shrub to replace the one that the crew member damaged.) I tried to reason with the owner about this, but he became increasingly difficult to talk to. Our negotiations ended with him offering to pay for less than half the cost of the pot and demanding that I give him a notarized document stating that I wouldn't share information about this incident publicly, and that's when I gave up. I can't speak to the quality of the tree trimming work the company does, but beware that they might be difficult to deal with if problems arise. read more

We worked with Dave at Gold Tooth Gorilla last December, and it is our biggest regret of the last year, at least. Our neighbors actually hired them to prune our tree on their side, and we felt quite pressured to cut it down by Dave, with a false sense of urgency. The tree was a nuisance, but we regret cutting it down in the rushed way agreed to, and even more working with GTG. The tree sends up really problematic sucker shoots, and the main thing that convinced us was Dave assured us with certainty that cutting down the tree would end the sucker problem. In fact, it is FAR worse than ever. Turns out this should have been predicted, as quick research I do now says cutting the tree down in winter will encourage root strength and sucker growth, and even cutting at the right time requires applying a treatment for that to be effective. Unfortunately, I trusted a professional, who was either not knowledgable or just trying to pressure me to get business; I assume both. While cutting down the tree, they knocked over the main living branch of a plumb tree about 8 feet away. Dave just shrugged this off as saying the tree was old anyway. Now we went from two nice, big leafy trees to awkward stumps with weird shoots instead, and because of the rushed decision, we haven't planted any new trees yet. They stacked the logs against my garage instead of in the driveway as I had asked from the beginning, and then said wouldn't move them to where the need to be. While stacking against the garage, they chipped scraped up the (recently done) paint in several places. They also left huge holes in the lawn with no attempt at repair, and left the place covered in sawdust, and said they forgot their clean up equipment that day and hope I don't mind (eventually one of his employees came back on his own time to partially clean up the saw dust). Dave also was not very respectful of the mask and social distancing guidelines with us during the middle of the covid winter, and seemed to give us a sideways look for wearing masks. On top of it all, Dave tried to overcharge by a couple hundred dollars more than he quoted from the beginning. I guess to his credit he didn't fight me when I called him on it. Though I should have refused to pay the full amount for the damage they left to our property, but mostly should have never worked with GTG at all. We got a very expensive lesson on maintaining our boundaries and not being pressured into bad decisions. read more

Additionally, the company was able to schedule the work for the following Monday. The crew was punctual, efficient, and highly professional.
