Felt like getting some cheap Chinese takeout. We've ordered from them before and it was pretty good. We got takeout and ordered online. The order was ready as expected and didn't take too long. The pick up was easy enough. Though, a few slight issues with our order. My roommate order two veggie egg rolls and received none of them. Last time we ordered from them, she ordered two and only received 1 of the two. Maybe there's an egg roll conspiracy. I've ordered from here quite a few time using Yelps online order feature. I love that you have the option to change the type of rice with your meal, unlike other restaurants in the area. I order the orange chicken dinner for both my boyfriend and I, mine with chicken fried rice, and his with beef fried rice. Even though it has peppers and is labeled as "hot and spicy" it really isn't. It's just right, considering he doesn't like spicy. Golden Chef has come to the rescue the couple times I was out late, hungry and knew there was an empty fridge waiting at home. Chinese American take-out restaurants are ubiquitous, and there isn't anything that makes this one special. If this says anything, I can't even remember what I ordered the first time. However, what I noticed about my last order is that they incorporate more variety of vegetables in the dishes, so if you like a balanced meal, this may even seem like a healthy option. I really didn't expect to find broccoli, cabbage, cucumber, zucchini, peapods, carrots, baby corn, etc. in my Beef Pan Fried Noodles. Beef was also good quality, not over tenderized or chewy. Compared to other places, the food has less sodium, and I think that made it a little bland. They don't skim on portions and a regular order can easily be split into 3-4 meals. read more

One dreary day, desperately craving chinese food, I found a menu for Golden Chef online and decided to give it a try. The menu is the typical fare found on pretty much every other chinese menu in Chicago and to my great happiness, orange chicken is one of the available lunch specials. The food arrived quickly, portions were enormous and most importantly, the food tasted good! Like I ate my lunch special for 3 days in a row good and I HATE leftovers. My friends and I have ordered from this place countless times and I've never been disappointed. I felt like a five-year search for the answer to my cravings for Chinese food ended when the Golden Chef Delivery Guy showed up at my door. I have since ordered from the Golden Chef 3 times, and each time the food has been tasty, consistent, fast, cheap, and generously portioned. I have since picked up takeout for dinner, and the place is a little sketchy, especially at night. It's not the kind of place I would go to dine-in, probably ever, but I will still call upon Golden Chef with regularity for his tender cuts of tasty stir-fried meat and vegetables. I give this a Meh, not because the food is necessarily bad, but just because there is really nothing that makes it stand out to me. This place, along with Tasty China across the street are virtually identical cookie-cutter Chinese fast food joints. From the menu and pricing all the way to the actual food itself. If you live in the hood, this stuff is totally decent, just don't expect to get the equivalent of your favorite Chinese restaurant. TIP: While it may appear that Golden Chef and Tasty China are your only two Chinese options in Humboldt Park, you can actually order from Lee's Chop Suey which has REALLY solid fast food Chinese. In my quest to find the best Chinese food in Logan Square this was a second place contender. I ordered the usual fried rice, orange chicken, pot stickers along with hot and sour soup and an egg roll. Orange chicken was alright, not the greatest I've had, but still better than 90% of the garbage in Logan Square. Pot stickers were the same usual bland ,wet junk people in Logan Square have come to expect. Egg roll was surprisingly bad as well (don't know how you can screw that up). Fried rice was pretty decent. You can tell it was made the usual lackluster way of soaking it completely in soy sauce until it almost turned completely black, but it wasn't terrible. This was my first time trying hot and sour soup. It had a peculiar taste, but wasn't as bad a miso soup (which tastes like straight p**s around here no matter where you get it from). I'd still have to give this place a pass though. Food quality was just between poor and decent. Non-consistent food=non-consistent customer. read more

First of all this joint aint in Lincoln Park. I don't even go to Lincoln Park. This is the take out Logan Square's version of Lao Sze Chuan. Good Cheap Chinese take out only exists in New York, but this is the closest you're gonna get for take out. For a neighborhood joint, I give it four bowls of rice! and they got the Buddhist shrine in the corner. Tres New York, son! Good for what it is, not fine dining but in my opinion the best in the area. The food is nothing to whine about, decently priced and comes in good portions (by that i mean large portions) and its is pretty tasty. I don't always crave Chinese food since i can always get it in Chinatown but when i spend the week over at my girlfriends i'll typically order from here. Favorite dishes are the shrimp with walnut, the salt and pepper shrimp, and the BBQ spare ribs! should definitely try it. Only gripe i have about this place is that theirs a lack of selection when it comes to soda beverages, the fries aren't the tastiest, other than that the food is pretty solid and won't disappoint .
