The search for our neighborhood Chicago chinese spot may have finally right here with Lee's! We've been in the neighborhood for a little over a year and and have driven past a ridiculous amount of times. One night when we didn't feel like cooking we decided to give this place a Lee's a call. It took a little longer thank the average Chinese food place, but that's because they've been slammed with orders every time we go (yes, we have returned 2-3 times since our initial visit.) I never see anyone dining in, but it looks clean and a little dark. The The eggrolls are Thicccc and have a unique, yet delicious flavor. I've heard it's due to peanut butter so if you have an allergy just beware. Got the lunch special. Came with an egg drop soup, egg roll, chicken fried rice, and bbq pork chop suey. An insane amount food for just under $10. While the food was cheap, it wasn't that good. The soup was okay, but the fried rice lacked flavor. It lacked any savory or umami flavors. The chop suey was a new dish for me and I had no idea what to expect. I liked the veggies, but the bbq pork was thick cut ham and had very little resemblance to bbq. The only thing that I would come back for was the egg roll. I was blown away by the taste of my take out dinners from Lee's in the last couple of months. It was several entrees like sesame chicken, Hunan chicken, Singapore noodles, shrimp lo mein, chicken fried rice, shrimp fried rice, eggs rolls, crab rations, pot stickers, chicken wings, and much more! However, I decided to order a sesame chicken lunch special for my lunch which I picked up and I was very disappointed when I ate it. The eggs roll had an after taste that was almost sour, the sesame chicken tasted over cooked and/or old almost if it had been reheated and the chicken fried rice had parts of un cooked rice, it had no flavor, and may have also have been reheated. Mixed bag. I probably never would've given this place a shot had a not recently read a food article praising this place. The Yelp average is far more in line with expectations than the GrubHub average which seems to constantly trend higher. I ordered the crab rangoon, general tso's shrimp and an egg roll for my husband. The menu is heavy on chop suey, chow mein, and egg foo young; it reminded me of places we ordered from when I was a kid. The rangoon was solid, the sauce looked like NyQuil, but tasted better than I would've expected. The shrimp wasn't great and I'm glad I chose the small size. TIP: the menu doesn't place the chili pepper consistently next to spicy dishes. Spicy wise this was spot on, if not a bit spicier than I would've liked. Flavor wise it was like they repurposed a plate of orange shrimp. Every bite was equal parts spicy and sweet; I didn't enjoy it. To be fair, I thought I'd ordered kung pao shrimp, so maybe my expectations were off. My husband got a single egg roll as he only wanted a small snack; I assume it was good as I heard no complaints. This is what I'll call a "sunny day eatery". Because they basically discourage you from dining in. How? Here's some hints. It's winter time, walk in the booths are as cold as ice, you can literally see your breath. Summer, same bullshit in reverse, you'll sweat bullets. Forget about walking in at 11:30 when they finally mosey in, figure another 40 minutes time to get up and running, and if you're dining in, to get 2 degrees warmer inside. Yeah,, it's gotten that bad. Some of their food is decent, Egg Foo Young, good Egg Rolls, Soups, a super Hot Chile Pepper Oil, but the other condiments suck. Hot Mustard that was mixed up 2 years prior, Dayquil Plum Sauce, and the nastiest Soy Sauce you'll ever taste. Well not quite like my other usual Chinese restaurant but it's decent. My college friend mentioned about it and I kinda wanted a change than my usual Chinese restaurant. The hot and sour soup was ok. It wasn't too salty like some places but it was a little watery. The thickness of the soup was lacking. The egg rolls was good too. Very big in portion wise. The Mongolian beef was unique to the other Chinese restaurant l have been going to. They added more gravy and did use onion leaves. They used sliced onion bulbs which was also going. The stir fry broccoli which my friend ordered and shared was delicious, healthy and generous portion. The shrimp toast was also delicious but was unique in how it was cooked and presented. Surprisingly really tasty Chinese option in Logan Square. Their prices are slightly higher than surrounding areas but I'm thinking it may just be worth it. Everything isn't perfect but it's pretty darn good. Sesame chicken could be a bit more sweet but overall the flavor is delicious, the chicken is moist and overall a good dish. The same goes for their orange chicken...could use slightly more tang or sweetness, but overall really tasty dish and I'd get both main dishes again. Their potstickers are huge! They aren't just huge but packed full of meat with thick dough, everything tasting awesome together. They were a bit too oily...okay, a lot too oily. I could do without that, for sure. This food reminds of what Chef's Special was supposed to be, old school Americanized Chinese classics, but wasn't able to accomplish. It also reminds me of a 90's all you can eat Chinese buffet in a good way. No item will blow you away, but the nostalgia factor is fine. I'd stick Youngs as my go to for this style, but glad I gave it a try. Sweet and sour chicken, egg rolls, hot and sour and orange chicken worth ordering again. Reading some of the negative reviews I was skeptical after already ordering.. took advice from a friend It was yummy! No complaints! It's your standard Chinese delivery. Wow, Lee's quality has dropped off immensely since my last review. Only a handful items (potstickers, wonton soup) from the menu is ok but, much like their other dishes it's starting to slip in quality. I dont know if its a whole new cook or the cook just doesnt give a shit anymore. For example, they had great eggrolls where you can taste every individual ingredient inside. Now it's glop whch looks like peanut paste inside the eggroll which makes it taste like it's unfinished. General Tsos chicken came out too sweet even after I ordered it extra spicy. Its wasnt even mildly spicy. Nor was our Szechwan shrimp. Whats the point of having an indicator on their menu showing that certain dishes are spicy hot when theyre not. If anything, its barely mild. Chicken chow mein has always come in a light sauce but here it comes out watery and dark. Even when they were good they had some of these issues but it was minor at the moment. But now they let these problems grow and its out of hand. It shows they no longer care. You pay more for bad quality now. I know this is Americanized Chinese food but that doesnt mean they should drop in quality in making delicious food. Reviews have failed me yet again. The only item worth mention and different to any other Chinese restaurant in the city is their egg roll. They took the egg roll contents and tossed it with a Thai peanut sauce then fried it and the result is a piping hot egg roll with significant taste. The taste is mildly peanutty, some would easily think the egg roll had a bit of peanut butter inside. Does peanut butter or peanut satay sauce appeal to you? I used a combination of sweet and sour sauce and sriracha to balance the flavor for my taste buds. I had one egg roll I took to go which I reheated the next day. Warmed in the toaster oven and the taste had changed. That day the contents tasted hella salty, what happened?? One thing that bothered me about the meal overall was the feel of oil. Everything was oily. The shrimp toast appetizer was like a sponge for oil, not something I want to ever eat again. All of our dishes had an oily feel to them which left us feeling gross. A full night planned stopped short soon after dinner. An appetizer plate for two, General Tso's chicken and Orange beef. Cost $42 dollars with tax and tip. Twenty dollars per person seemed too high a burden for bad food and no free hot tea! Everything tasted the same, especially the entrees. The only difference, orange zest in the sauce for the beef dish and crushed red pepper flakes in the sauce of the General Tso's. The Tso's chicken tasted overcooked or pre-made and then applied to sauce. It had that consistency for me and did not win either of us over. I still have a full order of it, hate to throw it out, but I'm not going to eat it. Orange beef I won't even bother, it wasn't good, more average really. The draw for me was the restaurant. Reminded me of Chinese restaurants I frequented as a kid with my folks. Fanciful, lit, paper lantern chandeliers with colors of red and green. Red tassels hanging down from the lanterns. Old school Asian inscribed chairs and some tables. Cloudy windows from years of keeping in the smells of prepared foods. The name Lee's Chop Suey, I don't ever eat chop Suey. Wikipedia it if you don't know. In the 80's there were many "chop Suey" named Chinese restaurants that were decent. This was just average and grossly overrated. If I ever happen back, I have to give them the spicy taste testing. An order of shrimp fried rice and some kind of meat in garlic spice, both made spicy. If it comes out with flavor and a good amount of spice, I'd redo the review. read more
