Pretty sure I got food poisoning from here. The food is trash. I am only giving two stars because our waitress was sweet and it was very clean And had a nice atmosphere. I had to actually search for things in this buffet that looked edible. Egg flower soup tasted like pure egg yolks. Everything lacked freshness and flavor. read more

Says online they open at 10:30. They didn't let us in until 10:45 and now It is 11:00 and they don't have any food in their warmers. And it smells really bad in the restaurant. No heat either for these cold winter days. So unfortunate. We walked out with out a meal. Bummer. read more

First time eating at Golden city buffet and they messed up our order and gave me double of one entrée . the chicken was dry as jerky with absolutely no flavor whatsoever. When I called to let them know they said if I brought all the food back they would refund me so I drove all the way from Gold bar back to Monroe which is 20 minutes and they still charged me $10 for the food that we did eat. This place is not high top quality but you definitely get a lot for what you pay for. Comparing to the similar Chinese buffets, Golden City is super affordable (just $7.5 for lunch and $10 for dinner) and the food tasted decently. This family owned business is excellent! They are so friendly and courteous. The buffet is really good but the food off the menu is unbelievable! The Hunan chicken and house fried rice are fantastic. (3/9/2020 @ 7:00 pm) Regrettably, Golden City Buffet earned Silver City status this visit. I arrived at 7pm, there was hardly anyone there beyond another couple. The waitress sat me down and took my drink order of water but was not seen often through my meal. Selection is not large which was nice. General Tsao Chicken has nice flavour and so did the other chicken dishes I tried including Chicken on a Stick, Peanut Chicken, Salt & Pepper Chicken, and the Teriyaki Chicken. Beef with Broccoli was tough to chew, but nonetheless still good. The coconut shrimp was sticky to chew and the buttered seafood was a bit dry (some of the shrimps still had their tails to them), though the bacon wrapped shrimps were divine! The Crab Ragoons a bit overdone, the first few were dried out, but the second few were nice and warm. A constant during my meal was many items not hot, only warm if at best. I had one of the sweet rolls, it was warm and soaked up the oil it was friend in. There was a variety of deserts including apple pie, cupcakes, actual cake slices, mini peanut butter cookies, and soft serve "ice cream". The apple pie broke the moment I picked it up and had a bitter flavour (think of a cleaning chemical sprayed near you) and I had to dispose of it, the cupcake frosting was delicious but the cake itself was dry. The cake slice had rich chocolate flavour while the peanut butter cookies had more of the peanuts than peanut butter flavouring. The soft serve "ice cream" was sour (think vanilla frozen yogurt) with candy toppings leftover from Valentine's day (they had those candy hearts with messages on it!) Overall, personally I might not return soon to Golden City; however, I encourage you to try them out for yourself and see how you like them, especially if you're in town for the Evergreen State Fair. read more

My husband and I ate here tonight. It was our second time here, as we only recently moved to Monroe. The first time we dined there everything was tasty, the service was good, and we were happy with the prices. But tonight, we were absolutely ecstatic! Cooking at home is difficult for us because we have no indoor running water right now. We needed to find a place to eat out, but the weather was not cooperating. When we pulled up to the Golden City Buffet we were afraid they'd be closed because of the snowstorm; many places in town had reduced hours today or simply didn't open because of the weather. It looked like they were locking up, but I approached the door to see. There was a gentleman just inside carrying a brush and a paint pan full of orange paint who told me that the restaurant was closed, but he'd be happy to feed us to-go. I took him up on the offer and they let us in. I thought that we were going to get whatever they had leftover from their buffet before they closed, but upon entering the restaurant I realized they had been closed for hours...perhaps the entire day. The heat was off, screws and lighting fixtures were on the tables, the buffet was covered in drop cloths, and they were performing a deep clean and paint job on the entire place. The man (I'm going to assume he was the owner) asked what we wanted to order and handed us a couple of to-go menus that looked like duplicates of the regular menu, not truncated at all. I expressed concern that we were putting them out by showing up without calling first to see if the inclement weather shut them down, but he insisted that we order anything we wanted. We ordered pork egg foo yung, shrimp fried rice, crab rangoon, and cashew chicken. The owner disappeared into the kitchen, and in about ten minutes returned with a box full of hot, freshly prepared food in to-go containers. The total came to only $26, and the owner threw in a container of noodles for free because...reasons? LOL. I don't know what he was trying to explain to us, but I gathered he was apologetic that they were closed when we came (even though almost every other place in town was closed, too) so he wanted to give us something extra. When we got the heavy box home and opened up the containers, we found each of them brimming with what seemed to be three or four usual orders worth of food. There were probably 20 crab rangoon, each one deliciously crisp, warm, and filled with tasty cream cheese crab mixture. Every other dish was piled to the top of the styrofoam (#5 recyclable) container. There were 8 egg fu yung and a separate container of warm gravy for them. The shrimp fried rice and cashew chicken just about burst the sides of their containers, and the noodles were a pleasant surprise. We were planning on eating our meal at home and having enough for lunch tomorrow, but when we saw how much food it was (and how expertly prepared) we took it next door to our daughter's and son-in-law's house and shared it with them. The four of us barely put a dent in the meal before we were all stuffed. There is enough left over for at least two more meals for all four of us, possibly three! I feel so fortunate and honored by the hospitality and generosity of the people at Golden City Buffet. They made a cold, snowy night with no running water much easier for us. Thank you so much! For Monroe, this place is decent, I like that it is not crowded and you can always tell when the busy ours are driving by. The food is good. They have your basic chinese food here nothing fancy but it fills you up when you get the craving and its affordable. I recommend it! read more

Hot times to eat are at lunch (11:30-1pm) and dinner (5-630pm) to get the freshest dishes. Suggest doing take out $4 a lb is a great price-if you are not hitting peak times for the restaurant. Tastiest Chinese/Asian dishes around...again key is getting while fresh. Don't trust these other reviews...we eat here (takeout) at least once a week and do the buffet once a month. So this place is in a not-so-great part of town and most of the time doesn't look like it's doing much business. Give it a chance! I've been here six or seven times in the last couple years (at several different times, peak and non) It constantly exceeds my expectations. ...because my expectations are realistic. This is a steam-table-all-you-can-eat-buffet next to a liquor store that probably sells more knives and pipes than wine. Across from a high school. So. When I say this place exceeds my expectations let me first tell you how to meet them - plenty of vegetables fresh and cooked the proper amount of time - plenty of dessert options not the same thing in three different colorways - salad bar that doesn't look like a rabbit cage - meat still tastes like what kind of meat it is. - fried rice, steamed rice and chow mein all passable. - American foods for that pain-in-the-ass friend or kid like chicken nuggets, fries, onion rings Now let me tell you how this place is above and beyond all that. First of all I haven't had a single thing there I wouldn't go get more of. The kung pao chicken is not the sweet & sour chicken in a different sauce. The broccoli from the broccoli beef is not the salad bar broccoli. The sushi is binge-edible, better than the best grocery store sushi, not quite at sushi-boat status. The fried food like mozzeralla sticks were definitely deep-fried there not shaken frozen out of a bag into a cookie sheet and put in the oven. And the tempura is tempura and not just deep fried vegetables. And tonight I got a take-home box and everything tasted great cold several hours later. So seriously be kind to these guys. The service is great, even on slow days the stuff never sits out too long (you can tell because it's either hard or oily when it does) The dishes actually taste like the ingredients were cooked separately not just wokked together with some generic teriyaki sauce. So deep down inside we all know buffets are more for getting a deal on food quantity rather than food quality. I've been to buffets all across the country and this one ranks the lowest on my list. The dishes they serve here aren't very accurate to their title. Food is warm at best when you eat it. Not many selections. Sushi wrapped in plastic that smells like it's been sitting out all day. Only positive thing I can say is the price point which is $10, but considering the food quality I see why it is very low. read more

I only stumbled on this place by accident coming back from Stevens Pass and was a good thing i did. I dont know why anyone says the food was subpar it was fresh when i was in at 7pm at night. There was a large selection of dishes, unfortunately they all seemed to be swimming in heavy sauce and I didn't taste much variation between many of the sauces. A lot of what I tried seemed to have sat under the heatlamps for a bit too long. Maybe if I went back on a Friday or Saturday (when I assume they're busier), it might be a bit better. They might get more business if they indicated on their sign that they're a Chinese buffet restaurant. This is a great buffet. Food is usually rather fresh. Service is good and friendly. Nice family atmosphere, and my daughter loves the fish tanks. The sushi selection is rather nice. Worst Chinese restaurant I've ever been to. I went here the other night with some friends and from the outside it already looked sketchy, but we gave it a shot anyway. The inside looked tacky and dirty. The food was cold and just didn't taste very good. I would've had a way better experience going to Panda Express. Also they had about 5 or 6 cichlids in a small dirty fish tank, as an owner of one myself it broke my heart to see them so crowded and neglected. I've been here four times thus far. After today, I will not be going back. The first time, I was very impressed by the selection and the freshness of the food. The sushi was great and the coconut shrimp actually had shrimp in it! I got prompt service and everything was nice and clean. The other times, the service lacked in one area or another...either waiting too long for refills or food looking like it's been sitting out for a bit too long. However, it didn't deter me from coming back. Today, I came in and got my usual shrimp dishes and fruits+veggies. I bit into my shrimp only to find an odd texture and a grayish yellow blob on my fork. That's not what fresh shrimp is supposed to look like. The coconut shrimp was mostly breading. The fruits and veggies were wilted. A lot of "clean" plates had food stuck to them. I give this place 3/5 stars but honestly, I believe a business should deliver consistent quality to its customers.
