Came here based on Yelp reviews - total win. Excellent food, big portions, good pricing! My kids are moderately picky eaters and both really enjoyed the deep fried tofu noting the texture was exceptionally nice (I agree but I am biased, I love all deep fried tofu). Teenager said the Lo Mein was "huge" (indeed) and we all agreed it was flavorful. The middle school kid said his sweet sour shrimp (ordered with sauce on the side) was "the best I've ever had", and even liked the sauce enough to dip a few which is a whole lot for a kid who isn't a fan of sauces in general. I ordered the sesame beef and while I really liked the sweetness level and the flavor, some of the pieces were hard to chew (not quite beef jerky but still much chewier than I would like). We ended up getting 2 pieces of raspberry cheesecake which the teen and kid swore was some of the best cheesecake they've ever had (sensing a theme starting here). I hate to write this because it will be hard to find a table from now on. Love this place. I've had a several of the lunch items and all were superb but the S&S pork, which was overcooked. Maybe an off day because all there other battered items are delish. Took the wife who is so picky and it was a hit for her. Definitely eating here again, and again. Lunch menu is 7 days a week. Both times I've eaten here, the food has been good. The fried rice wasn't greasy, the general tso's chicken was crispy, and the veggie stir fry was fresh. I don't remember the name of the dish, but I love how they paired the general tso's with a veggie and shrimp stir fry in one menu item. Pair that with rice and/or noodles -- it's the perfect dish! The place is small and tucked into a strip mall, and there's an unsightly booth full of boxes they're saving for takeout orders, but the place looks clean and nothing was sticky. The staff is nice enough, and they do a good job of refilling your water and checking up on you. I wouldn't say one of the waitresses was rude, just straight to the point kind of person. I'm gonna preface this by saying I'm a Chinese food snob. Since I've moved to the PNW I've been really missing good Chinese food. There's a weird trend with hot and sour soup having ketchup added. Things have just tasted off. I get needing to cater to the demographic but no. Lol. I grew up in an area that was 90%+ Asian. I cook authentic Asian dishes all the time. So-yeah...here we go! I've tried this place a couple times. My family likes the potstickers and egg rolls. We try different dishes in addition to those apps each time we've ordered. The hot and sour soup is one of the better ones I've tried in the area. There is no ketchup (yay!). But it's not spicy or enough vinegar for my taste. I tried the pork and cabbage spicy soup and it was not spicy at all. It was delicious but I really wanted the spicy. I think they might have forgotten to add the chilis/chili oil to the container. it tasted more like wonton broth. The green beans are fresh and loaded with garlic. I've also ordered king pow chicken. It was ample which I appreciate. But it had more sugar than spice. I try to limit my sugar intake so I will avoid it. But it was still pretty good flavor over all. For the area this has been much better experience for take out chinese. We will definitely try more dishes. read more

I have been looking for original Kung pow chicken for decades. There once was a place in Portland at the Galleria that had the best Kung pow chicken I ever tasted. The original recipe only requires it to be chicken, peanuts, peppers, and probably green onions; would be one thing to add, but when you add Carrots and celery, etc., it ruins it. This wonderful restaurant serves it how it was intended to be, and allows you to change the heat of it from mild hot. This is how food is supposed to be served. We went here based on the yelp reviews. The restaurant is tucked into a strip mall in a not so great neighborhood of Vancouver. We ordered combination fried rice, fried shrimp, crab puffs. Snow pea shrimp and sweet & sour chicken. The food wasn't good. The sweet and sour chicken and the fried shrimp were coated in large amounts of greasy batter, hardly any chicken in the greasy mess. The crab puffs are not the creamy cream cheese that everyone usually loves, it's made with some other cheese, also not good. The fried rice was supposed to have shrimp, chicken, and pork, it only had shrimp and chicken, it also was lacking flavor. The snow pea shrimp was edible but just not great. And..... EVERYTHING was loaded with MSG!!! We won't be back.....there are so many better options. read more

I'm very picky about Chinese food. But this restaurant reminds me of the food I would eat with my family growing up. It's a small restaurant near other businesses but there is always a place to park. They greet you as soon as you enter and ask if you are eating in or if you placed an order. I've never had a complaint about how friendly they are. Disappointingly, the menu items listed as "spicy" have no semblance of heat. One a positive note, though, the items are all fresh and flavorful, and service is very prompt. The BEST Chinese food we've had since moving to the PNW almost 2 decades ago. Anytime someone tells me to try their favorite Chinese restaurant I am ultimately always disappointed. It's usually food that's over breaded, or soggy, or sat around all day. What I grew up eating was what you would be served in someone's family home. It's hot, it's fresh and it's made with pride and love. So when I tried to find a quality Chinese restaurant up here it was nothing but disappointment over and over. Whether it was in Portland, Seattle or Vancouver. My whole life, Chinese was one of my favorite cuisines, until I moved to the PNW. It was so gross that I just didn't try anymore... UNTIL I tried Golden City!! It's AMAZING! You can tell they truly care about the quality of food they serve! None of those ridiculously disgusting, thickly breaded, soggy egg rolls or questionable meats that have clearly sat around for hours. This family owned and run restaurant is WONDERFUL and the people that run it are kind and caring. It's one of those hole-in-the-wall restaurants that once you try it you think : "wow, I found a gem!" The restaurant is small but cozy. The food is always fresh, never heavily breaded, the meats are good cuts and not the scraps. Everything about Golden City is like what I knew growing up. Three stars for the delicious food. They are the best American Chinese food in Vancouver. However, the staff is less than friendly. They recently tried to nickel and dime me for packets of soy sauce. I ordered $40 worth of food to go, gave a tip, then asked for soy sauce. She gave me 1 packet. I asked for more and she said only 1 packet per order. I laughed thinking she was joking but she was serious. She wanted to charge me 35 cents per packet. I refused. Shout out to Yelpers who take menu photos, aaaand I forgot, d'oh. Full disclosure, I was getting over a gnarly 24hr stomach bug and felt like a freshmen morning after a dorm party when your RA is out. Woof. Well, like any good afterparty stomach logic, I needed fried rice. Yep. I needed to soak my aches and pains in a bowl of rice fried with egg, veg, and meats. But what I got saved my day. The lady who answered the phone answered fast and with their usually cheerful tone. How are they always so happy? Likely the fried rice. We ordered the Combination Fried Rice (lunch size) and Beef With Broccoli. She said it would be ready in 15min. 15min?! I can't event get my pants on and find my keys in 15mins - plus one to the rescue! Food was ready as soon as she arrived (13mins) and she said there was no indoor seating (05/29/21). Approved by us. Thank you for keeping our community safe and for the freaking lava you serve! Seriously, no ones food in all of Vancouver is as piping hot as Golden City. Each your sauces with caution lol it's temperature HOT! 1) Combination Fried Rice: Lunch special sized and the perfect portion to sooth my sore stomach back to life. I nursed this box of perfection all day and it made me feel human again. Egg, peas, carrots, fresh fried onions, pork, chicken, shrimp rice all hang out in a salty and perfectly firm rice to ultra-tender meat combo. Write this down for when you feel raunchy: get the fried rice. You'll feel better. Or die trying. 2) Beef With Broccoli: Not something I normally get. I mean, I like beef and I like broccoli, but it's just never 'wowed' me as a restaurant dish. I WAS WRONG. My plus one wanted "beef and a vegetable." Beef and broccoli? "Sure." The reviews for the Sesame Beef are amazing and I really need to try that next time. Oh, there will be a next time. The broccoli was delightfully crunchy and obviously fresh. I love the florets are kept with a longer section of the tender stem, like how I cook broccoli at home. It's not a bag, it's fresh broccoli (heart eyes). The beef was magically soft and holy moley the sauce was so good we just mixed all the white rice in it! Surprised me how much I loved this dish and absolutely recommend it for the raunchy stomach. I was on the edge, but a heaping of fried rice and some surprisingly amazing broccoli beef saw me through. Come here to earn some hearts back. Whatever's in that broccoli beef sauce is basically the elixir from that video game and you're about to get all your hearts back. read more

As I began my search for a good Chinese food restaurant for our Xmas eve dinner I was met with a laundry list of mediocre 3 star reviewed options spanning from Battle Ground down throughout Vancouver. Golden City has 4+ stars on both Yelp and Google so we gave them a try. I called in our order at 330pm, was told it'd be an hour wait. I wasn't mad about that; I thought, GREAT, a sign that this place is goooood. And so we arrived for pickup and ended up with a ninety minute wait. Still not mad. While we waited the extra half hour I chatted with a woman who's been coming here for 20 years, and she has yet to find anywhere better. And another testament that they wok up the best in town: they had to turn customers away around 5pm because their kitchen was so busy with the Christmas dinner rush. Again, don't me mad, be envious of those who scored an order and plan to go back another time soon. We ordered general Tsos chicken, lemon chicken, both served with rice of course, pork lo mein, and a scallion pancake that actually didn't make it in the bag. All were delicious, the breaded chicken dishes were crispy on the inside and not over breaded. The noodles also had nice flavor. I often order noodles that are oily and not flavorful, so I was happy with their version. We fed 3 adults and one child and have enough leftovers for dinner for the 2 of us another night.
