I couldn't find a decent Szechuan spot in Vancouver before, and I was tired of going into Portland whenever I had a craving... I'm so glad I found this neat spot! A lot of restaurants claim that they serve Szechuan food, but it's just regular Chinese food... This spot has both, and the Szechuan part is pretty good! We accidentally ordered 2 fried dishes by mistake, but they were both pretty delicious! We got the dried fish filet and spicy chicken/popcorn chicken. The fish was so crispy and savory... I didn't try the regular menu, but I will definitely come back to try more of their Szechuan menu soon (there were two separate menus when we came in). We were a walk in at 6:55 pm, so we were expecting things to possibly be busier during the dinner rush. We entered, immediately wrote our name down, and wasn't seated until 730. There wasn't a staff at the door, I think I would have appreciated someone coming to the front to check in with us about wait time estimations, but they only came to the front to tell us to put our name down after 20 minutes of us kinda waiting by the front. They took our order quickly, certain items they mentioned they were too busy to make, which was fine and understandable. So they'd recommend another dish in its place. The reason I mainly knocked a star is once we ordered, the appetizer came out quickly but no one ever really checked in on how we were doing, we didn't get a water refill or at least were unable to flag anyone down to do the quick bringing out of plates to other tables waiting and zooming back to the kitchen. We eventually got one of our entrees the honey walnut shrimp 15 min later, but no bowls of rice. We had to wait until our second entree came out 10 minutes later to get to enjoy our meal with the rice. I would've preferred if the rice was brought out earlier or at the same time, and trying to flag someone down for the rice was difficult. Eventually by 830 pm we got our last dish, the vegetables. Which would have been ideally eaten alongside our proteins. Wait times were very long, which would be overall fine if someone had communicated or checked back in. Food overall was fine. Honey walnut shrimp was more caramelized here, I think other spots tend to be more on the creamier side. Fish fillets were more breading than fish. Vegetables were fine overall, probably not the stunner last entree dish to finish off the night but overall fine. The appetizer beef tendon were good, it definitely has that numbing sensation with the peppercorns you find. Overall, for a Sunday night for dinner it was bustling, a lot of folks were waiting for items and I overheard other tables asking for things to just be cancelled due to the length of time it took. We were only in Vancouver for a few days during our August anniversary trip, and I was craving Chinese food one evening. Szechuan Brothers piqued my interest while researching (authentic) Chinese restaurants in the area. Located in a large strip mall, the restaurant was cozy with plenty of tables for groups and couples alike. We were hungry but not starving, as we had eaten at Park the Carts several hours earlier, but still wanted a good dinner. All of the food looked so good around us, especially their Szechuan hot pot. However, we decided to go with simpler fare so as not to have leftovers. I went with the braised beef noodle soup while my husband went with the combination fried rice. The servers were attentive and friendly, and took our order quickly as well. We didn't have to wait very long for our food to arrive to our table. The braised beef noodle soup was the perfect portion, with a ton of veggies and huge chunks of tender beef. The noodles were chewy and bouncy, and the broth had a good depth of flavor. Braised beef noodle soup, when done well, is so comforting. The beef was melt-in-your-mouth tender, which is one of the best parts about this soup when executed correctly. My husband's combination fried rice was also delicious. I had a few bites and it had such a wonderful wok hay to it. The combo comes with chicken, beef, and shrimp, and there was plenty of meat in the dish. I only wish we could have returned to Szechuan Brothers for a second time during our trip, but that just means we need to go again the next time we visit the PNW! I was surprised to find an authentic Szechuan restaurant out in Vancouver, but Szechuan brothers was a fantastic surprise. The chongqing chicken was very mild, but still an enjoyable dish. We got the personal hotpot which was a soup based hotpot that we added beef too. The soup had a great spicy kick to it. We also got a lamb dry hot pot which had great flavor and even included cauliflower. Finally we got the combo chow fun and yang chow fried rice. I was super disappointed. We were excited to go because my son said he'd been there before and it was good. He did warn me that we would definitely be waiting because service is not very quick. They did greet us quickly, and we got our drinks very fast however it took quite a while for them to take our order. It took the normal amount of time for everyone to get their food except for me. I kept trying to get someone's attention, but they were in such a rush. They were not looking at other tables or checking on anyone. I eventually had to walk literally over to the kitchen to get someone's attention. When they finally brought my food over, they only brought part of what I was missing. I had to ask again for the rest of the food to be brought to the table. Everyone else was almost done by the time I started eating. There was no apology or anything else other than, "we're busy." The staff is friendly, fast and very helpful in answering any questions about the menu. speaking of the menu, I don't always know what something is and their menu has photos of every item! This has helped me branch out and try new things. My absolute favorite dish in the menu is the DRY COOK green bean chicken (be sure to ask for the dry cook!) - it's a tad spicy so be careful not to eat the red chili pepper if you don't like too much heat! Their hot and sour soup is the best. Portions are large enough for family style/sharing, so order a few different entrees so that everyone in your party can try multiple dishes. Choosing from the color photos I ordered the lamb skewers, Mapo tofu, and wontons in hot chili oil. They each arrived quickly, piping hot, and so very tasty. Going back for a second taste here was high in priority for both my wife and me. Today we made it for lunch and we're both glad that we did. Unlike a lot of lunch specials, this one didn't have some of the low-cost food. Frills that take away from the main entree at a lot of Chinese lunch specials. This one was the entree rice and a bowl of soup. I went for the general tso chicken with hot and sour soup and the wife went for cashew chicken also with hot and sour soup. The entrees were certainly front and center. The portions were large. Of course they are fresh from the kitchen and they were really delicious. If I had any concerns it would be at the pieces of chicken were too big for me to manage with chopsticks and so I had to resort to use my fork to cut it into pieces so I could eat. We also tried the sesame balls special. It's a a little bit sweet. Kind of like a filled donut hole rolled in sesame seeds. I'm not sure exactly what the filling is. They definitely do have American Chinese food on the menu, but seeing more traditional Chinese dishes offered in Vancouver makes me super happy. They had a really good texture. With the fish fillet in hot & spicy gravy. This traditionally is spicy, and that's how I would normally order it. However, they can make it mild or not spicy at all if you ask. The flavor is super simple if you make it mild or not spicy, I definitely recommend it spicy. It comes with so many different components from fillet fish, bamboo shoots, black fungus, potato, bean sprouts and more, I ordered no spicy because the individuals I was eating it with wanted not spicy.
