I came here the other day. I ordered chicken. Empanada. It was okay. I ordered shanghai lumpia, vegetable pork lumpia, 2 banana lumpia. The wrapper they used tasted stale or old. It wasn't the normal tasty crispy wrapper. I couldn't eat another bite. I also ordered the pansit (thicker noodles) with chicken adobo. My husband was not please at all. He didn't want to eat another bite of the chicken adobo or noodles. All in all, it was not tasty. So we tossed the whole thing. I hope they upgrade their lumpia wrapper and maybe change the cook. I'm going to give them 3 stars bc I believe in giving them a chance to improve. The people were nice and kind. read more

Lunch after the carwash... Not quite sure what brings me to Waipio though knew that I went to the Car Wash 808 Express as it's my favorite place to get it all done fast and easy and wished that we had one in town as well but with all that I noticed that there was a Golden Coin right across the street and decided to give them a visit for lunch as I started feeling hungry. Crossroads at Waipio is the name of the complex they're in and though they do have parking stalls (30 minutes limit) the amount versus other biz they share with is painfully sparse and though I got lucky to have one notice how many wait on the side for a stall to open can be frustrating especially if you have appointments for services that are in the same building as well. Walking in there are a few tables inside though it wasn't really air conditioned I decided to do a take out and just a mini plate was just enough as their servings are quite generous and decided on the pancit and pork guisantes and as I noticed the staff scooping them in the container the chaffers they were in as it's set up is a cafeteria style that you're able to view through the display wasn't hot which is not just concerning but disappointing as well...who wants to eat room temp food. Fast and very convenient Filipino food spot esp if you're in a rush. Food is already made and you just pick what you want, whether it's a 2 item or 3 item plate lunch. Nothing too special about their entrees. Prices are little pricey for what you get. But I think most Filipino food places are that way anyway. However, I'd say their Spanish rolls are out of this world. It takes about 10 mins to make and they come fresh out of the oven. Just so buttery and amazing! My family and I love it. Although, they need to talk and train well for this one lady that served us today April 11. I always see her there and she helped us twice already, no smile, at all and when we order and what we want, she gave us the look, like she gets irritated. Of course we have to make sure we order the best one to make our stomach full. Her service was very bad. When my son was asking just a little soup on the rice , she refused in a wise way. We don't eat there for free! In fact they are making money bc we bought so much. She's always staring on us when we sat down on the table to enjoy our lunch. This gem of a restaurant is an easy pull in if you're coming off the freeway from Honolulu onto the Ka Uka exit. We usually choose here for a Halohalo( like a deluxe shave ice) with the purple Ube ice cream on the top instead of inside or on the bottom. It is refreshing and quickly can quiet any growling tummy attack or if you are in need for a cold snack on a warm day. Even my fur bebe loves the Ube and a little of the shaved ice. The scoops used to be larger pre/pandemic. If it got a smidgin larger If give this another star. They also have cascaron( 3 Mochi balls on a skewer) with a sugary glaze that's sweet and chewy. They have a counter to your right when you enter of prepared food for a fast plate lunch if you like Filipino food. Spanish rolls can be ordered and made fresh, Filipino spaghetti that is sweet and comes with a hot dog is a novel flavor. Other goodies and desserts can also be found here. We recently started buying pianomo rolls to give to flight attendants when we board a plane or check in at a hotel. It's pretty fragile so take it as hand carry. I went to the Tony Collision Center to have an auto body damage assessment done since my car goes off-lease in a couple months, and as I was pulling out, I saw the Golden Coin sign across the street. I was just going to get a buko pandan, which is a green-colored pudding type dessert, but they didn't have it. The cashier said I needed to try the fruit cocktail which is a wet mixture of canned fruit cocktail, shredded young coconut meat, coconut milk, and probably condensed milk and a little sugar. I wasn't going to try it, but she seemed sincere, so I said ok. Of course, after leaving Manoa at 9:45 to take my car to be serviced at Tony Hyundai, getting a complimentary car wash at the Tony Car Wash, and getting the assessment done at the Tony Collision Center, I was a little hungry at 1:15, so also ordered a two-choice plate, with pancit noodles, pinak bet, and lechon. This fat-, sugar-, and calorie-laden meal was rounded out with the fruit cocktail dessert and a Diet Coke. There are only 4 dine-in tables in the small store. I was the only person who was dining in at the time, but later, three middle-aged Filipino women who probably cook at A Catered Experience (black logoed T-shirts and trousers) came in to order their usual halo halo dessert drinks. As they entered, the cashier yelled out, "three halo halo ?," to which they answered in the affirmative. They sat at two two-top tables that they pulled together, putting their purses on the fourth chair. As they conversed in Tagalog, I surmised that they were discussing events of the day and debriefing each other over their favorite dessert drink. Pau hana happy hour comes early in the Waipio industrial area. A few minutes later, an elderly white guy entered and ordered a two-item plate as well. I was intrigued why a white guy was going to eat Filipino food but as he spoke with the cashier, he said he had been stationed in the Philippines and seemed to know what some of the dishes were. Later, when I glanced over at him on the last table, he didn't look so happy at his selections. I didn't think the food was really good either. Stuff lying around in cafeteria-style chafing dishes is typically prepared hours ahead of time, so some of the flavor evaporates into the ether. But still, it was a satisfying meal after spending so much time so far away from home tending to my oft-neglected chariot. My Filipino friend Ben, who moved back here after living in the Philippines for about 20 years and four wives (he's been married six times), has been a weekly companion so we have been checking out many of the Filipino stores and eateries here. When we had gone to the Golden Coin in Kalihi a week before, he said the prepared food didn't look that good. So I only ordered the buko pandan, which tasted pretty good to me, and the packaged garlic peanuts which have been one of my favorite snacks. I used to get the peanuts in the Golden Coin on Keeaumoku outside Walmart, but that store closed down I think a few years ago. While the search for buko pandan at the Waipio Golden Coin was unsuccessful that day, at least I got to try some of the other food. As said, it was just ok, oily, but residually tasty and filling. As I left, I knew I had to use the bathroom before my long drive home, so went to Costco to relieve myself, then shopped for a while. Among other items purchased, I found an 11-inch Lodge really heavy cast iron pan for $15, and a 19-container set of Snapware food storage containers for $15 as well. I may be Filipino but I'm not an expert in all of the dishes. I ask questions sometimes when it's not busy I want to try something different and get met with grief. Line starts here. I rarely come here for entrees, I'm mostly here for desserts. Because really most of these entrees you can make at home but desserts are a pain. But if you do feel like coming for a meal, the dishes are good. It's traditional Filipino food from pancit bihon or palabok or Miki (not the Maui kind) I don't get the rice because really almost every Asian household has a rice cooker. Unless it's garlic fried rice, then it's two scoops please. You can get an order of kare kare (again the double wording like cow cow, which I know you read that review), to pinakbet, to chicken afritada, to BBQ pork sticks. Let's throw some lumpia, char sui, longagnisa (the sweet one my favorite), any soup, to dinuguan preferably dried. They have a lot more but you get the picture. And desserts everywhere. I don't care for their cakes because there's to much decorations on them. Where the heck are you going to put the candles? At this location there's plenty of seating. I believed they have a private room upstairs but not sure. I mean there's an elevator and it has to go somewhere. Overall four stars. Food is good and they have tasty desserts. Decent place to get your Pinoy grinds. I don't recommend the inihaw na liempo though. As good as it looked on the warmer it was dry and very jerky like chewy and hard. Unless you don't mind paying to repair your teeth stay away from that. Other than that the kare-kare is good and mostly all the desserts. They specialize in that. Can't go wrong with the lechon also. My wife had a craving for Taho, the sweet, warm drink with soft tofu and tapioca pearls. We decided to stop by Golden Coin in Waipahu to get some, but they didn't have any! They had a sign promising Taho anytime of day, but no Taho anywhere. We went back a few hours later, and this time they did have Taho available. My wife ordered the Taho, but the cashier/server seemed to be busy on a phone call and wouldn't stop talking even while taking the order. Then, after handling the money and touching the register, she went and prepared the Taho without bothering to wash her hands. Gross! We tried the Golden Coin on South King Street the next day... Same sign, same unavailability of Taho. Perhaps the most frustrating part of the experience is that they don't even bother telling us when the Taho will be available. We've tried their other dishes amd baked goods in the past, and there are many places in the community with much better Filipino food and much better standards of cleanliness. I was craving kuchinta and didn't want to drive to Seafood City because their availability is hit or miss. Since I was already at Waipio Costco, I called the Golden Coin down the street to see if they had kuchinta in stock. I got lucky as they had one left and the cashier set it aside for me. I was pleased with the portion and the fact that it's cheaper than the ones I buy from Seafood City. However, when I got home and opened the plastic wrapper, it smelled like it was starting to spoil. At first I thought it just needed to air out because it was hot inside their store. I ate two pieces but the smell was off-putting and made me lose my appetite. I ended up tossing the rest in the trash because I didn't want to risk getting food poisoning. In the end, the kuchinta from Golden Coin ended up costing me more than the ones from Seafood City since I only ate two pieces and trashed the rest. Newly opened Golden Coin in Waipio Gentry. Located in the new strip mall diagonal from 7-11 and next door to Coffee or Tea. It's a small space (smaller than it looks from the outside) but they pack in a lot of items. They have already prepared foods. Think Panda where you can choose what you want to make a plate lunch. They also have everything labeled in case you want to buy a small or large serving of a single item. There's a glass case with refrigerated drinks and desserts then another case with fried foods. Bakery items, frozen items and packages items are also available. Seating is limited but when I stopped by around 5pm or so it wasn't crowded. I didn't catch the hours but I think they open pretty early in the morning. Just glad there's a stop for Spanish rolls now! For now, ample parking available free in the lot. The building is pretty new so unsure how parking will be once other tenants move in. read more

I came here to pick up some food for our softball game after work. I saw all the negative reviews and was worried but I didn't have much time and I just wanted to get some lumpia for our game. After my experience here, I think I will have to agree with the negative review trend. When I entered the restaurant, I thought there wasn't anyone there, no customers and no staff. So I just start looking around and tried to see if they had lumpia at all. A lady appeared from behind the counter and asked me what I wanted. I told her I was looking for lumpia, to which she replied "What kind?" I told her I was looking for the kind with pork and vegetable. She said their lumpia didn't have any vegetable in it and showed me a case with 12 Shanghai (pork only) lumpia and about 7 banana lumpia. I asked her how much was the lumpia and she replied $2 each, or buy 4 get one free. I said that was ok and asked for all 12 of the Shanghai lumpia and 5 of the banana lumpia. She rang up the order and I honestly wasn't paying attention but she definitely overcharged me for my order. She charged 3 X buy 4 get 1 free but I only got 12 lumpia so it should have been 2 X buy 4 get 1 free and 2 X $2 for the last two. I didn't ask how much the banana lumpia was so I don't know about those charges. I also asked for the lumpia in a container or plate for easy access at the park but she said she had no containers and just put them in paper bags. The whole purchase exchange was not enjoyable and as I left, I saw a whole stack of plates/containers she could have put the lumpia into. I really felt like I never wanted to return here. The only good thing was that the lumpia was good and a hit at the field. I think there was only 1 banana lumpia left for someone to take home. Just go for the desserts. I've been there 3 times thinking the next time would be better but it actually was worse. The first time I went I had the tocino and I guess you can't mess up that marinated pork. Their pinakbet & sari sari however was made with American frozen veggies, like the frozen green beans you get in school lunch. Today the mungo beans and lechon dish was very salty and unusually like salty. This was overwhelming. I should have known better but I believe these places are franchises. The owners of this one should really take a look at the quality of their food. I should have just gone to where I know it's good. The Wahiawa one is much much better, no comparison. Yesterday, on April 24, 2024, between 2 and 3 pm, I bought a Miki Pansit at Golden Coin. I brought it to my daughter's house along with a Spanish roll. I put it in the refrigerator, and later that night, my daughter called to inform me that Amrie had eaten the noodles I brought. I realized I hadn't checked them. She mentioned that the noodles didn't smell right and seemed spoiled, so I threw them away. I called the Waipahu branch of Golden Coin to explain what happened. However, the staff member made excuses, claiming that they didn't have Miki and Canton noodles, I said it looks samething for me. She also mentioned that no one else had complained, which frustrated me further. I am planning to file a complaint to ensure they are aware and do not sell spoiled food in the future. Unfortunately, my granddaughter got sick after eating the noodles, and now I feel like I'm being accused of lying, which is unfair. read more

I have never ever done a review. I went to the Golden Coin in Ewa Beach around 6pm and had the kare kare. Food quality is poor, all tripe and 2 pieces of beef. If you're going to serve kare kare, at least do it right with ox tail. No flavor at all, and in my opinion, it is disrespectful to the customer and embarrassing to the business to serve such poor quality. Filipino food is very good and when you eat it you can tell its made with love. Golden Coin is not! read more
