Golden Corral Buffet & Grill here in Saginaw was accommodating once again for our large family to dine together without any cleanup afterwards. They have a private room that you can reserve for your dining party in blocks of 2 hours. We gathered to celebrate the birthday of our family matriarch. We had a party of 42 family members! This allows for everyone to pay for their own meal and beverage. This is complete with fruit & salad bar, Mexican bar, comfort food, grilled food including steaks cooked to order, seafood, desserts and ice cream. All for a relatively low price for everyone. But hands down is never recommend this place the service is almost non existent other than picking up plates and getting sauces (out "server" was awesome) we asked for a way to get refunded some money as my wife, me and my oldest couldn't stand to take another bite. As a fitness/health nut, I NEVER thought I'd ever eat at a Golden Corral let alone give it a good review! I visited my father for Thanksgiving and since its just the two of us, we normally just get a bit out somewhere. This time he suggested Golden Corral. They had a special Thanksgiving buffet set up and for a very reasonable $16.99, they had carved turkey and ham, grilled steaks, all the traditional sides you would want as well as a huge assortment of desserts. As a healthy person, I found more than enough options from starting with a spinach salad, then moving onto turkey breasts, baked sweet potato (no sugar/marshmallows although they did have sweet potato casserole), steamed broccoli and carrots, and some fish. Even though the quality and taste of the food shocked me, it was the overall restaurant and service that impressed me. This place was very packed for Thanksgiving yet the things that stood out to me were: -The restaurant was very clean -The service was top notch (our waitress Dominique was absolutely the best and never let our glasses run empty. -Everything was efficient. -They posted the calorie count for all of their menu items right above the item. This was a HUGE plus for me! Maybe this was because it was a special Thanksgiving day buffet, however, I must apologize to Golden Corral for judging them in the past. read more

Went for dinner, prices are expensive for a buffet, like $18 for an adult + drink. I have been at this chain before in other cities and found it a good value, average to good food, and a few things I truly liked. My experience tonight was below average to bad. Food was cooked hours ago and not refreshed or stirred, all items over cooked or dried out. I ate at 6:30, should have been prime. What was fresh was oddly undercooked considering a majority was over cooked and dried out. Looks like they planned to cook this items once for the rest of the evening. Also, No fresh cooked steak as advertised. Even the dessert bar was bad - messy remains of cakes/ pies and unappetizing - didn't even try anything. I'm also a dog lover. But they decided to seat a person with a guide dog right next to the salad bar. Place was 1/2 empty - this was just wrong and gross to trip over a dog at the buffet. Not to mention the guy took his dog up so one hand on leash, another on the spoons....a server should have assisted. The positives: Host and server were attentive. Salad bar was ok Food stations and dining area was clean, exception was the dessert staton but I blame that on kids and poor parents. Me and my boyfriend went there for dinner tonight. The food was medicore. There was huge mess in the lobby we watched workers walk pass and a manger walk pass and leave without picking it up. We were there a good 45 min and it still has not been cleaned. I have been here twice and the first time, not bad but the bathrooms are the absolute worst. It is nasty as I have seen a mysterious brown smear on the door of the stall and wall.( not too mysterious but yeah, gross) Today was my second time going and oh my god, it was gross. The first thing I do is go to the bathroom and yet another brown smudge on the stall door. Then I go sit and I start to get out my utensils, my fork was dirty. I know the difference between a water spot and an unclean fork and it was not clean. Also we asked for some help from what we thought was a waitress and asked her a question, she looked at us and said "I'm not your server." And walked away! I mean, she didn't even try to help like saying "I let your waitress know" but nope. The buffet is nothing to write home about it just a regular buffet. This last time the hamburger was raw. Trust me I like red meat and this was out of my league. The building has two entries: one from the east and one from the west. Unlike the Tucson locations where people entered from one set of doors on one side and were funneled into a controlled waiting line area, these two entries forced people, coming from the different directions, to decide who was going to get into the main line first. A T intersection point and source of potential conflict. Since the line to get in was extending into the area adjacent to the outer doors, every time those doors opened everyone in line was treated to a blast of winter cold. The layout of the restaurant is so poorly designed that it does not allow for a comfortable flow of traffic. In the Tucson locations, the buffet is arranged as two large U formations where the contents of the buffet are contained within the U and people could only walk outside either U to make their choice. In the Saginaw location, as a result of the poor design, the guests block entire areas of food. The Saginaw location has the buffet setup in a serpentine fashion such that people clump within two areas of the serpent sections. This was not possible in Tucson. The Saginaw location forces people to move along part or most of the buffet: -when they go from the entry waiting line to their seats -when they exit the restaurant -when they go to the restrooms -when they go to and from their seats to the buffet All of that causes a traffic problem that also interferes with people who just want to get something from the buffet. In Tucson, because of the setup, traffic flow is very good to excellent. Little to no traffic flow interference or lines forming at the buffet. But wait, there's more! The grill station in Saginaw has hot food choices in front of it. While people are waiting on their steak, they block vegetable and potato choices. In the Tucson restaurants, the grill has no other hot choices in front of it. Guests waiting for a steak do not block other guests' food selections. My wife observed that in the Tucson location the bread has its own little bread station so as not to take up space at the buffet. In Saginaw you have to compete for food items with the bread and she was not even sure there is butter for the bread as she could never get close enough to see. (note that my wife did NOT eat any bread) Now about the food. We were excited about all the dinner smoked choices until we actually ate them. We sampled all of the smoked items as we remembered how delicious they were in Tucson. My wife had a pork rib that was so tough that she could not gnaw (her own word) the meat from the bone. She quickly gave up. My piece of brisket was all fat (carved that way by a poorly trained employee) and tough. My wife told me it was so tough because the carver improperly sliced the brisket; she was not able to eat her piece either. The chicken, both smoked and roasted, was very salty. Unpalatable. I had a piece of steak cooked medium rare, but it was so tough that it was like eating an eraser. I did not eat it. Additionally, one set of tongs to grab meat was completely greasy. I was forced to visit the bathroom to wash my hands after handling the tongs. We both ended up wasting much more food (if you can call it that!) than we would normally have done and we were embarrassed and dismayed that we had to do so. We did not try any of the pastries, bread, or macaroni choices so I cannot comment on those, but it might have been nice to be able to get to the cooked vegetables more easily (which also weren't cooked properly) or at a minimum enjoy the meat choices we were able to get. We both left hungry and wanting to eat something better when we got home. Restaurant poorly designed for people traffic both going in and at the buffet. Staff poorly trained to serve food. Food badly prepared. You really need to question where the dollars have gone to design and build this restaurant, as well as train employees, if even laymen can see these obvious problems. Overall very disappointing. Saving Grace: Lunch between 2-4 pm M-F has a special price for seniors 60+. Ask for the senior early bird special. It's not only a lower price (below $8.00 for each senior), but it includes a drink in addition to the entire buffet (although the unsweetened ice tea, like the decaf coffee, wasn't very good). The mini-steakburgers are delicious, even if you don't eat the buns. Get them and something from the salad bar at the west end of the buffet. The deviled eggs weren't bad. Note also that the restaurant doesn't have loud music playing, the noise is only from people talking, and unlike many restaurants we weren't treated to a blast of cold air (once we were seated) every time the outside doors opened.
